Cagging helps me save a little girl's life.

I'm dead serious, so don't hope for something funny.

I was visiting my grandma for Christmas in Hemet, CA and after saying goodbye decided to check out the local GameCrazy to see if there was anything worth picking up. It was 5pm so the sun was setting and it was getting cold as I pulled into the empty parking lot in front of the Stater Bros. that's on the same corner.

I drive past ready to head toward the Hollywood Video on the other end, and I see a little girl, toddler, latina, probably 18 months old, walking by herself wearing a pink shirt and diaper. There were no houses nearby, no cars, and I didn't see anyone, so I stopped and approached her. I asked her where her mommy was, and in return only got a periodical "Ma-mi" out of her. I grabbed a sweatshirt from my car and wrapped her in it, and then called 9-1-1. Two guys in a truck drove up and I waved them down to give the operator the address since I didn't know where the hell I was.

Five minutes later, I saw a guy running from across the street towards us. I figured he was a relative, which he was. He said he was her uncle, and I told him I called police because I had no idea where she came from.

About two minutes later, two cruisers pull in and start getting our statements. The uncle then told the officers that the girl, "Kaya" (sounds like Maya), was being watched by her grandmother and somehow walked into the backyard and through the back gate. He pointed to a house across a field the size of a Walmart. She had crossed two streets by herself, and a vast field with rocks, dirt and dead plants in the cold, darkening night (very few street lights in Hemet), miraculously without getting hit by a car. When I found her she was still walking and had some small cuts on the bottom of her feet, and I swear she was headed right for a busy intersection when I found her.

The cops then escorted the girl and her uncle back to their house, at which point I had left.

Seriously...

I cannot fathom the amount of coincidences that led to me finding her, considering I live 100 miles away, had no intention of going to Hemet until that morning, had no intention of going to GameCrazy until I found out that morning that the $3 for 10 sale, didn't think they would be open until I called up discovering they were open until 9pm, made a wrong turn that cost me a few minutes delaying me so that I found her on the exact route I took at the exact time she was there...

Being a cag led me to likely save a toddler's life. On Christmas day.

Good work. It's almost like you were meant to find her. I'm glad you did and not some creep. Did the uncle even thank you?

Yes, good job my friend. That is the sad world we live in that a toddler can wonder off from her family and no one notice for a enough time for the little girl to get that far away from home. Glad you were there and helped out because I know a lot of people that wouldn't have been as mindful.

Holy crap, good job. Thanks for bothering to take the time to check out the situation and make sure the kid was ok; you're right, you very well did save her life.

Yeah, the uncle shook my hand before they left. As far as I could tell it was the grandmother was who was watching Kaya (and she's also her legal guardian), so the uncle was definitely grateful.

And I didn't get anything- didn't expect to, didn't want to.
yea... you better have at least got something at the boy 2 get 1 free sale for all your efforts :)
I did find a copy of Growlanser Deluxe at the GC in Monterey Park on the way home though. ;)

Amazing story about a great deed. You prevented something truly horrific from happening. Thank you for sharing your story with us. It's nice to know that people do good things for nothing still.
CAG of the year?
Who the OP or the little girl who was crawling across two intersection cut and bruised to get in on the Gamecrazy 3 for 10 goodness. In all seriousness thou, good job OP.
Wow. Lucky girl - some people would be like, cool - free baby.
Haha, damn you for making me laugh.

Good job kunai.

I'm guessing the police might put the girl in protective foster care custody, since apparently her grandmother didn't do a sufficient job of watching her. You might be glad the relatives don't know who you are if they took her away. I'm not saying calling the police was the wrong thing to do at all, because that is all you can do with a lost child, but sometimes it's hard to know what would be best for the child in these situations. For all you know, she could have been escaping a kidnapping.

I thought the same thing. The family will hate me if she is taken away, but at the same time, what else could I have done? Walked into Hollywood Video and ask if she was anyone's daughter? Calling 911 was the best thing I could think of, since I didn't know the area. Also, from what I understand, if anything they would give custody to the uncle since he technically wasn't the one who was supposed to be watching her, but is still a relative.

Great job. What a nice Christmas story you'll have the rest of your life now.

By the way, Gamecrazies open on Christmas everywhere? Another reason I need a Gamecrazy over here now.

in for 2, ty op

but seriously, wow. funny how things work out... you never think about the path you're on until it brings you across something like that. kudos op... i don't know what more to say... that's awesome.

(btw my grandparents live in hemet, ca too!.. but they decided to visit US this xmas)

Great work OP, you did everything right. You looked for a Cheap ass deal and helping save a life at no cost to you is one of the best deals you could ever get.

And trust me that story will help you bang chicks some day.

Props to the OP... feels good, doesn't it?

And props to Javeryh/Norain for bringing some humor to the thread - I actually lol'd.

Great story, djkunai! Sure to be a holiday CAG-classic from now on...
Great story and a great deed!
I'm almost embarassed to ask, but how did the shopping at GameCrazy go?
Actually, there was nothing at the GC in Hemet worth picking up, and I left about five minutes after going inside. I might have been a little overcome by what just happened, but I didn't see much of 3/10 or anything else. I stopped by the GC in Monterey Park on my way home and grabbed Growlanser Generations Deluxe for $40, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Metal Combat, and Jade Cocoon (disc only) for $10.

Great job OP! Even though you didn't get anything and didn't expect to get anything for your awesome deed, you will be rewarded down the road, trust me.
