Can AT&T really force-charge you internet for using an iPhone?

True. To get Sprout and Nick Jr you need the 2nd level DirecTV package. I have that--but just because they require that package or above for getting an HD-DVR for some stupid reason. Only channel on it that I want is Versus for college football in the fall. But it's only $5 a month more so not a huge deal.

Promo price is $34.99 for a year, then it jumps up to $63.99. Still cheaper than the same channel line up on Comcast here though.

Thankfully I don't have or want kids, so the little kid channels will never be a concern! :D Not that it matters since being a sports buff kills me anyway since I need the sports pack (or college football and b-ball pay per view packages) in the fall/winter to catch my teams games.

You see how I save money is by not watching tv. I'm hardly home, so that's why I get the data plan

I don't consider $30 a month to be the huge waste that some are making it out to be. Google Maps alone makes it worth it, especially when you are taking a road trip. Not only does it give you the peace of mind that you can't ever get lost, it is so useful since all it takes is one tap to get directions to your destination from wherever you are. I use it everywhere.

Some bonuses are the Yelp app since you can always find the best nightlife spots or restaurants in a 3 block radius (I live in New York so there are too many choices). It is also nice having access to my Gmail account and eBay account at work (blocked) as well as the Joystiq and NY Times apps so I can instantly download articles and read them on the subway.

I used to be a firm believer in thinking an iPod touch is good enough but I can't go back to having no data on the fly. It is just too convenient and if you think about it, that amounts to $1 per day. You can choose not to buy that can of coke for lunch and save a buck, or basically make half your money back by not buying that newspaper and using the NY Times app or the browser for your news fix.
I want discovery channel, food network and nick jr without having to pay for packages that come with a ton of shit I don't want. But guess what? It's a service. You take what they offer or go elsewhere. You want that specific phone bur don't want to pay the added cost to use it? Boo fucking hoo. Make a choice instead of crying for something you aren't going to get.
My cell plan was $32 a mo. after the fake taxes. The way my job is forced me to get a data plan so now I pay $70 a mo. after fake taxes... I use the hell out of my data so yeah, I don't think I can go back to not having it now. Every time I look at my bill though it pains me. Also, Pre FTW.

And as I said above, I get that it makes sense for those who travel a ton.

Just not for those of us that spend the majority of our time either in our offices at a PC or at home with a PC/laptop nearby.

I'd like the apps, games, calendar to ditch my ancient Palm Pilot etc. But I have no need for mobile internet.

Same response as above. But will add that I have a Garmin GPS and no shame in carrying it when walking around a new city. Works just as well walking as driving. :D

I got you beat there. This is coming from a guy that had a prepaid plan where $100 would last me a year, and I still would never go back to no data. ;) In fact I'm at the DMV right now waiting in line and it is definitely making the time pass quickly.

Oh believe me it is even more useful for walking. I have a good sense of direction but the compass and subway map make it too useful when you are in a big city.

Oh I get that it's useful if you travel a lot like I said. I just grab a map and sub way map when I'm in a new city (which is only a couple times a year) vs. paying $30 a month for a data plan I wouldn't use enough outside of those few trips a year. Also living in a big city I'm pretty good at finding my way around cities in general.

My ideal would to be able to get an iPhone (or other smart phone) with a data plan like the iPad where you can just pay for a month at a time so I could just use the apps etc. with WiFi and just buy a month of 3G here and there when I travel etc.

I hardly use my iPhone for calls (even less for texts). If I could gave gotten one without a voice plan I would have. Well, better would have been unlimited data and pay-as-you-go voice. Oh well.
