ok im trying to make this post as inoffensive as possible, so please dont flame, theres no ill will meant.
why do people take celebrity deaths so hard? i am not saying it isnt sad that they die, and i wish their families the best, my question is why do you guys care so much about christopher reeve or rodney dangerfeild, or any celebrity that dies? i can see if youre a huge fan of theirs, so if thats it, i understand (i was a huge nirvana fan, well, still am..) but im just curious why everyone is begging for this to be a joke (other than the fact that a human would still be alive) because people die everyday, and ive never understood the whole celebrity thing...
if anyone understood what i said, go you ^^
I know exactly what you mean. I really don't like how celebritys are made more important to the masses, even in death. this is stilla great loss, but so is every death, every day.
In some ways aren't celebrities more important than the regular masses. When people like Einstein, Ghandhi, or Mother Teresa died, you could say its a tragedy because they contributed so much to society, whether it was scientific knowledge or good will. When a celebrity dies its almost the same thing. They had talent or some other trait which distinguished them from the rest of society that they shared and now are no longer to do so. If a guy like me were to die, it really wouldn't matter to many people because my range of influence was very limited. What I could have contributed to all of society is miniscule so my loss is pretty much insignificant as a whole.
Just because someone is famous doesn't mean they have contributed a lot to society. Paris Hilton is famous, but all she has contributed to society is "One Night in Paris". Please, don't act as if celebrities and actual important people are equals. Ghandi strived to change the world. Celebrities, with a few vocal (often poorly educated) exceptions, don't. This is not to say that their deaths aren't sad, all deaths are. But to compare Mother Teresa and Christopher Reeve is a shame to the memory of Mother Teresa.
I'm not saying all celebrities contribute alot to society or even positive things to society. And by know means was I trying to draw a direct comparison between Reeves and Mother Teresa. But there is a reason why they're the celebrities and we're not. Whether if they could act, sing, dance, or just a little better looking than the rest of us, that's what they shared with society. Wouldn't you agree that if a talented composer died would be a greater loss to society than someone who just plays video games all day? I know personally that I've done nothing to contribute to society as a whole and don't expect anyone but those who were close to me to care that I'm dead.
