Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena - Demo Now On XBLM
i heard that they decided to just make an entirely new riddick game.
I'd prefer that, really. I never really felt like Riddick needed to be updated or anything like that, so I'd rather see the devs. resources going towards a new game.
Well I suppose that's cool.

Personally I'd much preffer a sequel and a BC patch.

But yeah, as long as it's the exact same gameplay, with improved graphics and more content, I'll probably bite... once the price is right.

Coolest thing about this news is definitely the fact that this will be out in 2007. Awesome.
Agreed

If the remake is canceled, the least MS could do is make the original BC for us to enjoy. I have the game and really want to play it again; the first hour/hour and a half is amazing.

A couple of years ago the developers of Riddick said on Game Head on Spike TV (now of course Gametrailers TV) that they were going to make a 360/PS3 version of Riddick since they couldn't make the original one backwards compatible.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Just curious as I would love to have a 360 version of this. Thanks in advance.

Oh, yeah -- I forgot all about that. I haven't heard boo since they announced it, but at least you're not imagining things. :)

It's the Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

Here's the website, but it hasn't been updated at all. I think I signed up for email updates around October. I haven't gotten squat, btw.

Maybe we'll get lucky and something will be shown at E3. If not, I bet the game's been canned.

Atari today announced that it will publish The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena from Tigon Studios and The Darkness developer Starbreeze Studios. The title was previously announced as a graphically enhanced remake of the original Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay that would also feature a new chapter and multiplayer support. According to the press release, the new content has now been expanded to include "a brand new full-length campaign" as well as the previously announced online multiplayer support. We're just going to guess that might be why the game missed its original winter 2007 release date.

The newly revamped Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is expected to release in spring 2009. Check out a hi-res version of the first screenshot by clicking the image above.

Atari doesn't have a good record with games...hope it doesn't go bad.
Atari has nothing to do with the game itself. #-o

Just marketing, advertising, and backing whomever the developers are.
I know that...but they are adding new levels because of them right? Since they are the ones publishing they do have a say in what the final product is. Everything they've touched recently turns to poop...just saying.
Will this be the original game PLUS all of the newly announced content or just an all new game?
The article says "brand new full-length campaign" so I don't know if that means a bunch of new chapters that makes it feel like an entirely different experience, or if they just scrapped a majority of Butcher Bay's story and started anew.

Either way, I hope I can enjoy this game at least half as much as I did the Xbox version - as it is still my favorite Xbox game to this day.

New preview from IGN: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/934/934851p1.html
If you're just joining us, Assault on Dark Athena is a special edition of sorts. On one hand, you're getting a recreated version of the critically acclaimed PC/Xbox title The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (every model's been redone, the AI's better, there's a new weapon select system, environments are three times the size they once were, etc.) as well as a brand new story that both star Vin Diesel. It's basically two games, but the second part isn't a sequel -- just the continuation of the original game. Picking up exactly where Butcher Bay left off, the new tale in Dark Athena opens with Riddick going into cryo-sleep only to be rudely awakened when the vessel is jacked by Revas, captain of the Dark Athena. Riddick escapes into the air ducts of the new ship, runs into a kid who lets him know about Revas' slave trade, and then starts his assault on all the bad guys who were dumb enough to get in his way.
I wonder if it'll carry a $60 price tag or if it'll be discounted in any way since it's somewhat of a remake.

I wonder how long the extra chapter is. Is it "new chapter" as in one level or "new chapter" as in the way a sequel is the next chapter in a series?

Just saw the trailer ...never played the original, but God damn, that trailer looks fucking amazing, very impressed with the new graphical upgrade!

Even though I never played the original, I have interesting memories of this game since I it was being worked on at the same time I was working on Van Helsing. Both published by Universal and both had the same producer at Universal.

I remember having discussions with the Producer about Riddick while it was in production and I would ask him how it was looking and he'd say "well, it's very pretty..." - I don't think he thought it would be any good.

So it's interesting to me that Van Helsing actually sold around twice as many copies, yet Riddick ended up with all the critical acclaim. I am anxious to play this and see what all the hype is about.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but this looks very similar to FEAR in some ways, but in Riddick attire.

As for me getting this I guess I'd be on the fence still.

Lol.

I was thinking about replaying the first one again before I heard about this, and now I'm going to wait. I hope they developers weren't exaggerating when they said it was "Butcher Bay plus a whole new game added on. Looks like they totally overhauled on the graphics too, which is good.

I'm pretty excited for this game. Riddick is great, (and despite what others may say, I loved the movie).

I'm looking forward to this game. I watched a friend of mine play through the first game and thought it looked awesome. Now I just need to go back and watch the movies. Maybe I can stream them on the 360.

They say the new chapter is about as long as Butcher Bay. If that's true they would be stupid to advertise this as a remake with a "new chapter". That just makes it sound like the original with like one extra level. This should be advertised as a full sequel that also includes the original with the upgraded graphics (like Half-Life: Source but much better). They did mention the Orange Box so I think they get it.

Holy shit. Hearing Vin Diesel's voice and seeing that trailer reminded me how much I missed "Escape from Butcher Bay." that game was worth playing over and over again. Now instead of going back and re-beating it I'm just gonna buy this version.

It's nice we are getting so many quality single player FPS these days when it seemed like for a time I would have to whip out Deus Ex again.

Tried out the demo, and was very disappointed. I never played the first but all the hype for the remake got me excited for it. I thought it played way to much like a Xbox 1 game, you could tell from the feel of the game, its just not up to modern standards. The graphics are ok, nothing to write home about and not terrible. The game is full of bugs tho, i had enemys arms going through sealed doors and other problems. The audio was good. I just felt very underwhelmed by the game and doubt ill even bother with it.

How does an Xbox 1 game feel any different from a 360 / PS3 title, with the exception of graphics / framerate? Sounds like a poor opinion of the game.

I think it just sounds like he built himself up and it made him think it was a game that would be amazing, whereas those that actually played it know what to expect.

And btw, where the hell did this demo come from!? I didn't think this game was coming out for a few more months!

I'm looking forward to checking it out. Here's a link to queue it up. Gold members only.

I wouldn't put too much stock into blitz6speed's comments. He was about as anti-OG Xbox as they come. I would assume that includes all games relating to it as well.
