Chrono Trigger DS Thread - E3 Impressions Post #272

Anyone who bought this from Amazon, have you received or heard anything about the $5 gift certificate that we were supposed to get after the game shipped?
Yeah they removed it altogether. She still calls out to him twice but the "Good morning" line was replaced with "Are you still sleeping?"
LETS KILL THOSE fuckERS.

I should get the game today but I assume that it will be sent my email about a week after release, so late friday?

anyways a call to India will clear it up... wonder where that number is...

Anybody have a picture of the poster that was included with the game?

I read that there was a poster included with the game and I don't know if mine will have it. I ordered from Amazon, missed the delivery because of Thanksgiving break so I won't know for another 3 weeks.
the poster is same as the cover art
How big is it and how was it packed? I could get my mom to check but she'd have to know what to look for...

The way it's folded it's made up of 12 squares (4 horizontal by 3 vertical), with each square being about the size of a DS instruction manual.

Also the front of the box has a sticker that says it includes the poster.

How do you find the chief in the
dinosaur era? I went to the hut and he/she wasn't there. It sort of looks like there are stairs inside, but I can't go up them.
Did you finish the Middle Ages? At the bridge?
Middle ages is where the dinosaurs are? No, nothing about a bridge.

Thanks amigo!

Ah, wait, I just realized I went to the wrong time period. I headed to Prehistory by mistake, forgetting I was supposed to go to the Middle Ages. Thank you!

Just started this game three nights ago, and I've been playing it every night in bed. Only a couple hours in, but I'm really digging it so far. Combat's really quick, and the story and flow isn't slow at all. Even tho my friends told me otherwise, I was still worried about it being too JRPG-ish (more specifically, too much like FF), but it's pretty different from anything else I've played. Great way to get back into gaming after a hiatus of a couple months.

Also, I think this game earns some automatic awesome points for having both time travel and a frog knight.

Holy shit, you're right. I've beaten the game numerous times, Robo's theme is one of my favorite songs in the game, and I never made that connection.

With Judy.. this is my game to play in bed before I go to sleep.. Was playing Soma Bringer but the button smashing late at night was for some reason pissing my wife off.. .lol.
Middle ages is where the dinosaurs are?
FAIL.

Please return to the 3rd grade.
Wow, coincidence: I play this game a little bit right before I go to sleep, too. :^O
Me too... I play about 20-30 while in bed, before going to sleep.

Something about this game is very calming, I guess.:whistle2:k
Something about this game is very calming, I guess.:whistle2:k
The only way I feel a game is calming and don't get stressed while playing is when the battles are turn-based or, in the case of Chrono Trigger, I can set a wait system. I like that the game gives you that option.

You guys should try electroplankton before bed. Its one of the most calming things you could possibly play. Only problem is the game is rare as shit.

Me and my fiancee just restarted a bed time routine that we did last year and was very calming as well as brought us closer. We play Professor Layton for 30-60 mins and when we start to get kinda tired we pop in Electroplankton and goof around with it for 5 mins or so. Out like a light.

I got a question about techs. I'm at the end of the game and everyone is at Level 70. I remember in the SNES version some techs change/upgrade after awahile. For instance I remember Robo's Laser Beam tech having a bigger laser effect. What are the stipulations to get them upgraded? Is it Character Level or number of uses?

God, this game is still so fucking awesome. I'm kinda far into it
The Tyranno Lair
, but I haven't seen any of the stuff that's new to the DS version yet, but yeah, Square nailed this one. Sounds absolutely awesome with my DS connected to my HT system. It'll be nice when I can someday display DS games on the TV, as well, but whatever.

It's nice though - because there's been a lot of SNES games that I loved that really haven't stood the test of time well at all... but CT still outdoes pretty much everything out there.

You'll see the new stuff in a bit... once you get to
The End of Time
. Sadly though, it's not that great.

I'm up to the final stages and I forgot how awesome the story is. I especially love the whole
Zeal Kingdom episode
. I'm going to finish up the sidequests before the battle but with finals this week, I won't get to do much.

I've only done the Lost Sanctum and it's not very fun. It's a boring fetch quest that has you back-tracking way too much. It adds nothing to the story. I haven't played the Dimensional Vortex extra dungeon yet. The core game still rocks. This game will never lose it's luster.

I may have missed it earlier in the thread, but what's the average amount of time it's taking people to finish this? I'm trying to finish off Chapter 6 in Dragon Quest IV before moving on to Chrono Trigger, and am trying to plan my gaming around the upcoming release schedule.. ;)

The game has three [3] save slots I believe.

I never had a chance to fully experience this back in its SNES days - it's really great so far. The game is structured beautifully. I love that you can basically go where you want - there is a specific plot-line, but you don't feel hemmed in. Also count me in the "a few minutes of play before bedtime" club!

Can't really get used to moving or combat with the stylus. It's much better just using the d-pad and buttons.

This is a fairly short RPG. I did everything and grinded to level 80. It took me about 40 hours.

I am at 19 hours and 40 minutes and have 3 more optional side-quests to complete before I tackle the last dungeon. I have never grinded during the entire game but made sure to defeat every enemy I came across. I am guessing 22 hours would be a respectable estimate if you want to complete the main game and all of the original side quests (not the DS exclusive content).

Wow. Did anyone know that the first form of Spekkio is a
frog? I've been playing this game for over 10 years and always thought this was his first form:

Apparently this is his first form:

I guess you have to do a low level game on purpose in order to get his first form since I can't imagine anyone getting to The End of Time before Level 9 considering you have to go through the Cathedral and the robot factory in the future. I wonder what kind of attacks he pulls out as a frog?

died for the first time.. Damn Gaia. I feel i'm getting close the end of the game though. I might actually finish a JRPG!! can anyone let me know how much I have left. I'm assuming another 5-6 hours.

Got this game for Xmas, and now I just have to do all the sidequests before facing Lavos. This is where I got to the last time I played it and unfortunately I never finished it :( But not this time!

Beat it last night at 26 hours, 6 hours above the average it seems. Great game and I finally beat a JRPG!..Its something that was on my "to do before I do" mental list.

Anyone else have their game freeze? I just went out and bought it at Best Buy and as soon as I meet Marle, the game just stops mid talk. This is super annoying, and hopefully it won't happen again. Luckily it was at the beginning. Damn $40 game.... I guess that's what I get for paying retail and not waiting for the price to drop like a true cheapassgamer.

Tried again, got a little farther, but when she asked for candy, it froze again. What the hell! I googled this problem and it looks like its only happening with pirated copies. Hopefully Best Buy will let me get a new one. At least now I'll have two posters.......
About what level should you be when you fight Lavos? All of my characters are close to level 50.
It's not just about the right level, it's about having the right Techs and weapons. Do all the side quests first.

I can't believe how dated and undated this game is. I just played through FFVI again and I can't believe how simplistic the storyline of CT is in comparison. The whole game feels like one giant side quest.

The game still plays wonderfully, and I love how balanced the difficulty is.

CT is about a bunch of kids going through time, almost at random, why wouldn't it feel about a bunch of sidequests?

For someone like me, who has never been able to complete a JRPG, I found the game very enjoyable. The graphics while still snes era, didn't take away at all from my enjoyment from the game. I don't understand how after CT, there are still jrpgs with random enemy encounters. The fact that grinding and leveling up wasn't necessary, that you leveled up naturally through the course of the game, was comforting. The game has given me the urge to go back to FFIV which I had started last year but gave up after losing constantly to Golbez. I remember it being pretty fun, even with the random encounters.. The DS is just such a perfect platform for RPG's. I'm really enjoying just laying in bed, playing for an hour each night. Not sure I'd have the patience to play an epic rpg in front of the couch.

my original point being, CT is the prefect entry level rpg. I never found it babying me, nor was the difficulty to hard either. While the story may be straight forward, the only real shocker
was Magnus' true identity, which wasn't shocking at all
I think it just matches the games difficulty and accesibility.

Forgot just how much I love this freaking game. I'm near the end (The Fated Hour) when all the side-quests open up, and currently going through some of the DS-specific content (namely
The Lost Sanctum
at the moment).

DQ4 is one of my favorite RPGs ever, but I had no interest in the additional content they put in the DS remake. But for Chrono Trigger, I just can't get enough of the game, the more the better! Though I'm worried after I'm done with it all I'll be a little over-powered, since they give you some pretty badass stuff.

Great observation. In hindsight, CT really did take the genre 2 steps forward. FFVII (my favorite FF btw) kinda did take it three steps back though.

I'm picking this up eventually. The extra endings sound pretty enticing.

I agree that it was groundbreaking in many respects, it's just that the storyline feels really shallow to me. And there's little character development. Robo, Magus, Frog, and hell, even Ayla are the only ones that have their moments. The tech system is too simple and there's no customization other than having the right party so you can use double and triple techs, and at higher levels you don't really need them anymore. In fact, the later battles are so strategic that you're really better off just using individual techs. The game is incredibly linear, which I could accept if the story was better, but otherwise, you're just stuck following the exact path the designers laid out until the very end of the game. Certain time-based aspects, such as the weapon chests, are underused, and feel sort of out of place by the time you can find them.

There are some good points to this game though, that I'd really like to have seen carry on through the genre. There are no random monster battles in the overworld, so backtracking and exploration doesn't get tedious. The fact that battles take place on a separate sub screen really improve the game's pace. The level up system is incredibly balanced, and there are only a few moments near the end of the game that require leveling in order to succeed, and you can always set that aside and do the side quests, which are really fun, and actually tie into the main storyline. The mini games are also really fun. I remember running around the fair for a few hours just having fun at the beginning of the game.

I do like this game though FFVI reigns supreme in RPG land for me.
