Why do people dislike this version? I am wondering if I should play it on the PS1 or wait for the DS version. Sound off.

Load times, pretty much.

Otherwise it is great.

The speed difference vs the SNES version can turn off some ppl.

I heard it took a few seconds to load every time you went into the inventory screens. That's an absolute killer in RPGs. Wait for the DS version.

Load times. The most annoying part is where you're starting out. I thought the game froze between the time I chose "new game" and the time it actually started. And after saying "Crono" is an okay, name, it was another 10 seconds for the game to start. That sorta shit's all over the place.

I picked this up for $15 brand new, plus it came with FFIV. Not sure how much it goes for now but I don't mind suffering through 2-3 second load times cause I didn't want to pay $50 for the SNES version. Plus I remember the PS1 version had little extras; Sound Test, Bestiary, Endings, stuff like that.

Load times killed it for me.
When the DS version comes out I'll be all over it. I never got far into the game because of the stupid load times, and I didn't feel like going on eBay spending a bit on the SNES version and a SNES, atleast not right now with all these re-releases and XBLA content and what not.

Yea, it is nitpicky. But if you're used to the SNES version the load time instances are noticeable and can get annoying.

Load pre battle, post battle, going into menu, going out of meu, switching screens, music chiming in late... etc.
I've played both the SNES and PSone versions. People bitch and moan about the load times, but that are not that bad at all.
You are correct.

If you use the Fast Load option, it's really not too bad.
Would playing it on a PS2 help the load times?
PS2 did have a setting to set the disc speed to fast. That may work.

First time I played it was whenn it first came out on PS1. Load times I didn't notice back then. Played it again a couple years later but I put up with them because it is such a great game. I'd say if you can get it on PS1 for under $20 then by all means.

A pause every time you bring up the menu. It's awful. Wait for the DS version.

It's weird, because it even seems to be hardcoded into the game. My buddy ripped his copy to his memory stick to play on the PSP, and the pauses were still there, even loading off of a piece of flash memory. :p

If this annoys you so much, how do you play any disc-based RPGs that use a menu?
If this annoys you so much, how do you play any disc-based RPGs that use a menu?
I... don't.

But even FF7 didn't have that awful lag in there just to bring up the menu real quick to change an item. It's not just bad compared to the SNES version, it's bad even compared to similar games on a similar medium. Just a sloppy, sloppy port with zero refinement.

The load times, particularly when contrasted with the general lack thereof in the SNES original tend to put people off, especially since you're not getting anything substantive to make up for them absent some anime cutscenes you could just find on youtube.

I've never played the PS1 but I friggin hate load times so I already know that I wouldn't like it. Hell, if it was up to me, we'd still be using Cartridges.

Yeah, I thought if I put the game on my hard drive and tried it with an emulator, it'd run fine, but it was just as bad as before.

The load times didn't stop me from getting my money's worth outta that version, but it sure will be nice when the DS version fixes things.

If anyone else recalls, the load times stick out even more when compared to CT's companion in the collection, FFIV, which played almost identical to it's SNES counterpart. Menus, battles, etc all loaded extremely fast (which surprised me after the load-fest that was the FF Anthology, 5 and 6).

You can eliminate the slow load times by turning on "fast load" in your PS2's emulator section. Then the only slowdown is during Summons or other major graphical events.

Hate to tell you this, Ace, but there are no summons and the slowdown can't be eliminated.

Summons? In MY Chrono Trigger? It's more likely than you think!

If you've never played the SNES game the load times are similar to any other PS1 RPG, obviously the DS will have way faster loads, but I thought CT was still fine on the PS1, CT isn't the type of game where you need to constantly be in the menu screen anyway, which is part of why its so awesome

I'll chime with the expected load times but I also disliked the audio quality. Just like FF 4 & 6, the music and sound fx sound worse although to be honest, you probably won't notice unless you play the SNES incarnations alot.

I really did not experience hefty load times like most people have complained about. On my PS3 it loads generally quite fast and on my ps2 it did as well. I have no prefferance I will play either or gladly.

I've only played the original as a rom for the snes. Regrettably up here that cart is hard to find under 120 CDN. Besides Carts will always load faster than CDs because carts use ROM chips that don't need to buffer. However I didn't think the load times where out of the norm for a cd game.

Yeah, Square wasn't doing a great job with load-times on the PS1... See: FFA, FFC, FFVII-FFIX. Those screen wipes and battle entering animations hid it a bit though.
