CJayC of GameFAQs.com begins retirement.
interesting..I would've thought it would sell for more than that.
Probably because they already owned some of it, perhaps the extra 2.2 million was to get full control?
I always felt CJayC was out-of-touch with his own "audience." Did he ever make posts on his own forums?
In the early days he used to post all the time. However as the forums grew, every time he made a post, the topic would cap out at 500 in a few minutes. So, he was essentially forced him into seclusion from all the pointless posts that erupt after his. He would still post from time to time on game boards that he was interested in w/o as much fanfare, but for the most part he would really only post when needed.

The difference being, we use punctuation, capitalization and grammar.
Nothing like turning a nice thread about a semi-icon of our hobby hanging up the keyboard into a thread full of haters bitching about how the boards over there are full of ... um ... haters bitching and dragging down the level of discourse. The irony would be amusing if it wasn't sad, really. But don't fret: I'll be sure to link to this in a couple of years when CheapyD retires and there's a thread on some other site about how cheapassgamer was great ... except for the asswipes on the boards.
Dude, even with the all around pathetic state of messageboard software, GameFAQs' are the most dysfunctional i've ever seen. Not only that, but i can't imagine a more pointless site to base a messageboards on, so it's probably not fair to peg him for not using it much himself.

I know it's par for the course for every forum community on the internet to believe they're intelligent and literate despite their inevitable decline toward insular babytalk, but on a second look i'm actually amazed most people here were even capable of reading the sign-up forms. This place has its uses, but you guys sure as fucking hell aren't known for your intelligent discourse.

But speaking of Cheapy selling out, you know what would make that work? If we had running updates on used game trade-in prices.

As long as you avoid the heavily trafficked boards (contests/polls, social, the latest Zelda and Final Fantasy boards, etc.) the Gamefaqs forums are actually pretty useful. Nowhere else that I know of has a separate forum for nearly every single commercial game ever released. While most of them are empty or stagnant, there are often enough knowledgeable lurkers that you can ask about some incredibly obscure old game and usually get a good response.

I somewhat agree. I have seen him post one time in a regular game forum, but he posts weekly on Current Events.

Cnet actually bought GameFAQs and 2 other (completely unrelated) websites for $2.2 million (wiki source).
CJayC didn't get all of that 2.2 million, but I would guess that he picked up at $1 to $1.5 million.
I'd also guess he was paid a salary to continue working there, perhaps $50k-$100k per year.

Traficwise, the website is one of the top 300 websites on the internet.
I wouldn't be suprised if CJayC regrets the sale as clearly its worth is well beyond $1.5 million.

Also, i'd bet the reason behind most people's negative view of the message boards is the insane number of people who are active there. They have millions of users.
The more people you have, the more idiots/assholes/etc.

True on the millions of users Cheapy.

GameFaqs is also great for new games if you have a quick question on what to do next. Yes, you could ask here, but chances are you'll get a much quicker response at GameFaqs.

That is one of the reasons I still use the site, because sometimes the faqs are not too clear.

It's not just that. Like the GameSpy forums, they seem more like roach motels of the forum world, meant to keep up site traffic more than anything else. Sure they have millions of users, but the ratios get funky when you consider just why in the fuck anyone would go there to discuss anything other than the FAQs. There are better forums, relatively speaking, for anything you could talk about there and they're just as easy to register an account at.

Why all the hate in this thread? I'm sure everyone who has posted something blasting GameFAQs as a whole has used it when they get stuck in a game.

I love that site. It enables me to keep playing a game without getting stuck game-endingly way. I only beat Zelda: TP and RE4 due to GameFAQs having the solutions to the jumping statue puzzle and the sliding picture puzzle respectively. ;)

Their forums are trash, not so much for the people there (though that a component), but I just hate the layout. But usually a little huinting or a quick post can get you an answer when you need it and there's no FAQ up yet.

All this talk about finding CAG makes me wish I knew how I found CAG. I think it was a deal posted somewhere that I had to register to view, but I have no idea what that was or from whence it came.

Agreed. Even apart from the 10/90 signal to noise ratio (unless you're on a specific game or faq related board, then it's maybe 30/70, if you count semi-game related posts like "Ultimate Weapons Hurt or Heal!!11!!" crap), it's just a very hard board to navigate.
Anyway, yeah, if you think of the "game" "faqs" portion of the site (which of course you should), I don't see how anyone can rate it any less than 4 out of 5 stars, even if you've never used it. It's worth that just for the times I've used it to remember where the hell I was in an RPG or something.

Indeed, I've already noticed that lately CAG has been getting a lot of idiots/assholes as new members, but the site is becoming increasingly popular so it's to be expected, unfortunately.

Google linked to the N64 covers thread in the Old Games forum. Very pleased it brought me here.

How did you find CAG . . . that could be a good separate thread!

Indeed. It's not the end of the world, but we probably shouldn't be throwing stones, considering our walls are looking more and more transparent . . . .

That sale price is tragically low. And you can imagine how much work he put into it over the years, Jesus that's almost robbery. Hell, I would have gladly paid him 2.2 million for it had I known he would sell for such a pittance.

As for the forums, it's true what one person said - they were tolerable and often entertaining/interesting early on (PSO for DC days), but you are right Cheapy, like anything that is so popular it quickly gets out of control. I recall after 9/11 and the War on Terror board (not to mention the GTA3 board, with all of its "How do I Horn" fanfare) came into existence it was pretty much just intolerable all across the board.

The worst are the most popular social boards and the most popular new game/series boards.

The special interest/hobby boards can be very good depending upon your interest. Some, like the martial arts board can be very bad but others can be quite informative.

Yeah I actually preferred it when you had to be a member to see the forums at all. Plus it kept shit out of Google. Not that my opinion on that subject matters...

Yep, and the fact that there is a unique messageboard for each game makes it useful for old or obscure games as well.
In fact the game-specific boards are the only ones I ever visit on that site..

It doesn't. Mostly because you're probably the last person in the world to not understand how utterly annoying and self-defeating that sort of thing is. Requiring registration doesn't keep anyone out, it just means i'm going to make up some bullshit screen name with a hotmail account so i can find what i need.

Even those barely work. Everytime i'm there looking for something for some game, it seems like there's at least one topic that looks like it starts halfway through. Like if you were to click on this topic and all it displayed was page 2 and after. Is there some obscure option i'm missing, or do the game-specific boards archive topics as well as an amnesiac with Alzheimer's?

Do you have any idea what an ignorant prick you sound like? Yeah I figured you didn't. Have fun.
Oh yeah BTW, you totally missed my point. Nice reading comprehension skills to boot.
Not off to a good start, noob. In fact, Cheapy should ban your IP address, leecher scum.

More great reading for Jon Rose Fans at CAG...

Jon Rose, seems to think he's really smart. In fact he seems quite desperate to try to prove how smart he his, but the only approach he seems to be able to come up with to accomplish this is attempting to insult or bring down others. This classic symptom suggests that deep inside his troubled mind he's not quite so sure of himself as his outward bluster struggles to make up for his inward feelings of personal inadequacy---perhaps due to being beaten by his mom repeatedly when he was a child, for trying to have sex with the family pet (or similar).

He also seems to think he's a Web developer, when he really just piddles around with middleware and has a big 'couple years of experience'. Yet he feels confident enough in himself to make very specific and harsh assertions about people he knows absolutely nothing about. In fact, laughably enough, in this instance he has attempted to do such with a real Web developer who has him outclassed in every possible dimension, and has been doing so since his mommy was beating him down back in dear old Blighty.

Are you sure you want to continue with this, Jonny? Or are you ready to go marching home like a good little boy? Your mommy is waiting for you in the tool shed.
