[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

The Japanese figure is better than our figure that we got for Plat.  Japan gets a case, even if it's plastic.

@taylort3, you should argue your case.  Cause that's just stupid.

Just a heads up I just got an email from club Nintendo about a bonus survey it expires 7/8/2013. Is supposed to be only selected people I think so make sure to check your to do list

Oh I got it. Thanks for the heads up!

Edit: It appears to be an Animal Crossing focused survey, since I haven't bought that game yet.

I just put that I didn't buy the game since my backlog is swamped, but if they included a preorder incentive or a Club Nintendo exclusive bonus I would have picked it up right away.

Good call, almost forgot to register New Leaf for the bonus points!

15-20 years ago, whenever I played it for the first time, I would have definitely agreed about Metroid 2. Now playing it again on 3DS and seeing how well it holds up is a testament to just how well designed and executed it was. Of course it's not Super Metroid or Zero Mission and lacks some of the big upgrades those games made. Still, I think that makes the game all the more impressive when you think about how limited the Game Boy hardware was and it came out 7 years before Pokemon which I put in the same category for technical achievement on the system.
Metroid II is definitely an impressive game for the original GB. I think it holds up better than the original Metroid, since that game can be pretty unforgiving at times (any time you die, you restart with only 30 health no matter how many energy tanks you have, for example). Metroid II laid the groundwork for Super Metroid with Samus' powers and had a very clear goal / story despite minimal text/in-game story.

I absolutely loved the original Metroid as a kid, and when Metroid II came out I saved up any money I could get and ordered it from Babbages. I must have beaten it at least 3 times on my old gray brick GB when I was 9 or 10.

The game hasn't aged well, IMO, due to the limitations of the GB leading to some very recycled environments. It's easy to get lost, and the game is so zoomed in on Samus it's hard to get a feel for the environments at times without exploring every single corner. It's still very much worth playing, and with the internet being what it is, it's easy enough to get a map online to follow along with. Definitely more playable than the original Metroid, which I've tried to go back to from time to time for nostalgia's sake but always just get too frustrated with.

I really wish they would give Metroid II the Zero Mission treatment. I thought for sure they were going to remake it.

Oh boy, is it that time of year again? Suppose I should go ahead and brace myself for the bitching & moaning about the "lame0rz free prize".

Do the points ever expire?
From the OP:

Hopefully that answers your question :)

When you're required to spend hundreds of dollars and spent a handful of hours taking surveys, the prize is not free.

Same, though I think a lot of problems would be resolved by people finding a middle ground.

Like we should ALL be thankful we get anything, but that doesn't instantly mean we don't have a right to be disappointed. A hat most people will never wear, a game that could easily be pirated (I think we can all admit that lowers some of the charm of that prize!), a figure (I really don't have anything legitimately bad to say about the figure), a set of buttons you can easily lose, a deck of cards that look almost too good to play with and a set of posters that might not even be worth the hassle of framing. I am not saying the Mario pillow I want is anymore practical, but at least it was unique / cool. I can say the same of the cards / figure, but not the rest.

The same can be said about the amount of effort that goes into said "free" items. While the items themselves are free, you still need to spend money, do Nintendo's market research for them, and be fairly brand loyal to even get a free item from them.

If we all accepted that Club Nintendo might not give out free items, but does offer unique merchandise for investing a little time for their most faithful, I think we will all be better off.

Very well said.

Though I'd like to add that the "market research/hours of surveys" argument is meaningless. If your time/opinions are so valuable, just breeze through the surveys clicking whatever and you'll be done in under two minutes.

Well looks like it's already listed in the OP(Pikmin 3 surveys being up) - as for Club Nintendo, it's awesome. It's not really free, no, but I've gotten a lot of awesome posters and games from it so I'm pretty content with it.

It's not that I think that it's wrong to be disappointed, but it does annoy me when people go overboard with it.  There's no reason to start flaming Nintendo and act like you're all entitled to a 24k Mario-themed gold chain or something.  I get it, some people don't like the platinum gifts, but if you'd lower your expectations just a bit I think we'd find that most people would be ok with them(I've at least liked them all except the Mario hat, but at the same time I really wanted the aforementioned pillow as well).

I think part of the problem is people think they're doing all of this work for Nintendo and they should be duly compensated for it.  First of all, if you ever buy games just for the coins, you're doing it wrong.  The "hundreds of dollars" spent yearly usually nets you some pretty awesome games, which is all just about every other publisher gives you.  To me, at least, CN is all about using your coins for rewards - the extra gift given at the end of the year is just an extra bonus for the especially loyal customers.  That's where I take offense, people act like they spend all this money and do all of these surveys just for the platinum rewards, and that's not how the program was meant to work.

**EDIT**

As for the "hours of surveys" thing, let me try and clear that up.  It usually only takes 10-12 retail surveys to reach platinum(though it can be done in 7-9 if you buy a console)...  Being generous and assuming you fill out the surveys honestly, you're looking at about 3 minutes per survey as most are only about 12 questions, most of which are multiple choice.  Now, as many have already said, you can easily rush through a survey by just random clicking and typing a letter into each box.  I estimate that this can be done in under a minute.  Going by this estimation, platinum can be reached in just 10-12 minutes of your time.  Or, if you'd rather do it honestly, it's still only 30-36 minutes...  Which is NOTHING, especially in a years' time.  So expecting Nintendo to shell out major cash for all the "work" you do for them each year(half an hour!) is just ludicrous.

So when you download a game it's associated with the machine, and you can switch machines 5 times? Is it saved to the SD card, and can you back it up off that, move it off and on the card? And can you download again? Sorry to go OT, having trouble finding answers.

I think part of the problem and is most likely the reason for a lot of this hate, are the prizes themselves. Not only do other regions get better prizes than we do, Club Nintendo rarely adds new prizes, so Platinum quickly becomes one of the few reasons to do it. Since I want to keep this argument simple, here are some newer prizes I recall being offered in Japan.

1) 1 of 6 designed polo shirts.

2) Various shirt designs (beyond the one we got).

3) The 3 limited edition 3DS systems awarded via raffle (EU also got them, but not the US).

4) Specially designed XL stylus (These were really cool. Would have gladly bought one!)

5) The Japanese hand towel collection (some cool designs).

6) The infamous SNES Wii controller.

7) Several games we never got.

8) Tomodachi Collection (looks to be a Mii book, too lazy to really look into what a friend collection is lol).

9) Kirby Epic Yarn pouch (still to this day am waiting on this one ><).

10) 3DS XL cradle in various colors. I admit this one isn't the coolest item, but I would LOVE a cradle without having to buy one for my 3DS XL.

11) OST's

12) Various platinum rewards that were ignored. There was at least the Mario Handkerchief set, Pikmin bag and the awesomely unique Mario pillow (seriously, would ANYONE complain about getting that item? Even if it was Luigi I would be thrilled!).

13) CN branded stylus.

14) Animal Crossing learning cards.

15) Kirby flying disc.

16) Mii branded Wiimote back.

17) Puzzle (hard to explain this one besides that).

18) Mario power up pouch.

19) Various stationary / notebooks we never got.

Need I really go on?

Even the items we get aren't always on par with the Japanese version either...

1) Platinum cards (aka our reward last year) came in a specially designed cardboard sleeve and were in a plastic box.

2) Their Yoshi cleaning cloth came in pink.

3) Their platinum reward badge collection was in honor of Mario's 25th, where as ours was not (looks better / sounds cooler in terms of collectibles).

4) They got black hanafuda cards.

Anyway, I just think people do the surveys in hopes of getting a cool reward. I mean, how many people here could say they wouldn't want / use a Nintendo polo shirt or a 3DS XL charging cradle or even the OST's? However, when we're getting like 5 or 6 items a year, which include things like the absurdly over priced Yoshi cleaning cloth (that thing was 400 coins if I recall!)... well then all the hopes / expectations default on the end of the year reward, since that is the one prize we're guaranteed for bothering with CN.

If you're on this site and need to spend the full $600 to reach Platinum, then you only have yourself to blame. And that's all I'll say on that discussion for now.

As for the actual Platinum reward, I'm personally hoping they offer digital retail games, if they want to push digital distribution so much.

You'll get no disagreements from me there, I've been extremely jealous of JP CN for a while now, I've even bought a few of the things you listed from ebay!

I'm sorry, but what in the world is your point? When you form an argument, you use as much logic as possible, not crazy theories and elaborate scams. You can claim it cost you nothing if you constantly buy CN games, take the coins and flip the games and or steal them from rental stores / gamestop / friends, but the fact remains that it will cost you about $400 dollars to platinum without getting any deals.

...What the fuck are you talking about? You accuse me of making crazy theories, then go on to say I claimed it cost nothing? You have some very serious reading comprehension problems if you think that's what I said. All I said was that, if you're on a site for video game deals, then you shouldn't be needing to spend the full $600*. I didn't say a single word about costing nothing.

Do you think that $400 is greater than or equal to $600?

Take your own advice: next time you reply to somebody, use actual logic instead of some crazy rambling.

*For the sake of argument I'm not including post-play or intend-to-buy surveys, because then the actual amount varies based on what you buy

What is everyone whining about now?  Club Nintendo is not free.  It is part of the cost of the games you buy.  Sure, you can obtain codes through other means, but that doesn't change the fact that Club Nintendo is not free.  It's not like these prices are magically made and shipped to you at no cost.  The cost is somewhere.

So you are saying that if they stop doing Club Nintendo, our games would be less than 59.99 for Wii U games and 39.99 for 3DS games?

Nope, Nintendo knows they can still sell their games for that much. If they were to stop Club Nintendo they would probably use their marketing money somewhere else.

I'm moving to Japan.

LMMFAO!!!!!!! Those with common sense knows this is free. It's nice of Nintendo to do something they don't have to.

Free = "without charge or cost"

Cost = "an outlay or expenditure of money, time, labor, trouble, etc."

Yup. Everyone with common sense knows it's free indeed.

I just got an email about a new promo. I hadn't seen it listed yet:

Register Fire Emblem & Shin Megami Tensei IV with Club Nintendo and get a $30 credit on the eStore.

http://club2.nintendo.com/30/

Not a bad deal, since an awful lot of RPG fans will get them both anyway.

Update: My bad, I see there is a thread about it now. The original topic should get updated with it :)
