[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

Yeah Nintendo really has no clue. It's sad (as a Wii U owner) that the Wii U is doing so poorly, but it's not hard to see why. I was about to pick up Zelda LTTP last month with 150 coins and then stopped when I realized it wasn't Wii U. If it did become Wii U I'd be irritated at this point since I'd have picked it up. But given that it doesn't look like it, I'm irritated either way. :D

Seriously, Nintendo, get your crap together. Give us an account-based purchase system, too, while you're at it.
I agree. I'm a big Nintendo fan, but I just haven't been able to fork over the $250 or so dollars for such a small amount of software that interests me. If I wanted to do that, I'd be much better off spending $400 on a PS4 to play COD Ghosts and Battlefield 4 with better graphics and also play Killzone and InFamous Second Son.

On the other hand if Nintendo rushed out a bunch of unfinished unpolished first party games, they'd ruin their brand and we'd all be complaining about that right now. Nintendo had a short window where the Wii-U was sort of the most technologically advanced console on the market. They didn't take full advantage of that window.

I bought the Wii when it first came out and there wasn't an amazing catalog of games. But the prospect of motion gaming with the wiimote was much much more exciting at that time than playing with a bulky touchpad is right now. I already bought some Wii-U pro controllers, Super Mario U, and Super Luigi U. Now I just need a fair price on the console.

The only reason for anyone to buy a Wii U at this point is for the first-party titles. I had hoped it wouldn't be like that again like it was for the most part with the Wii, but dammit... here we go again! Ironically, while the Wii was an utter pos, it did house my absolute favorite game of last generation: Xenoblade. So there you go, hah!

Don't regret buying my Wii U, but I'm the exception to the rule in that I own every system because I can afford to. So even if the Wii U fails, I won't lose sleep. Mario 3D World is fabulous (2-player is win). I struggle with the 3D depth perception issue some, but that's the nature of precision 3D platformers. So it goes.

OK, got off topic.

Nintendo, you suck! :D

Just curious, have you played on one much? I was one of the Gamepad's biggest naysayers when it was first showed off, and very nearly didn't purchase a Wii U because of it. Within a few days of having the system I had a complete change of heart and it now stands as my 3rd favorite controller of all time(With DS4 & Wavebird being #'s 1 & 2, respectively).

I bought a Wii U strictly on playing Super Mario 3D World for 10 mins, do I regret the purchase? Hell no, I have a 5 game rule. If there are 5 games for a system that are out or will be soon then I will get the system. Nintendo is hurting with the Wii U for sure, but I guess it will do better than the Gamecube I hope. Just want Bayonetta 2 sooner than I will get it. Oh well.

Not to mention that I haven't played a single WiiU title that has any real emphasis on motion controls. At most they're like "Oh yeah, we should throw these in so Nintendo doesn't glare at us." Then the WiiU Pro Controller is one of the most comfortable and well designed controllers (aside from the lack of analog triggers) I've ever held.

Ha, now that you mention it I realize I haven't either.

I also follow the 5 game rule.

I have no interest in picking up a PS4 or XB1 for at least another year (maybe more).  Hardly anything on those systems I have any interest in at the moment. I can see how others might be interested and it would be worth it to them, it just isn't worth it for me.

The Wii U in comparison has a ton of content that appeals to me, but I can see how it might not appeal to others.

Different strokes for different folks.

Yep, same.

I also like to pretend that it would take more than 5 games to get me to buy a PS4 or XB1. (I can't actually afford one.) However, if there were 5 games I really, really wanted to play... I might go for it.

I think there were actually less than 5 games I really wanted to play on Wii U, but that combined with the VC stuff (Earthbound, for one), the Wii backward compatibility, getting it for $250... It all added up. Would be really hard to regret my purchase. And I know there will be lots of good first-party stuff for it, and hopefully at least a few good RPGs, too.

And I for one am really glad to see motion control being neglected. There was nothing I hated more than a nunchuk in one hand, Wiimote in the other, pointing and flailing it around. Yuck. No thanks. I hope that crap doesn't come back.

The Wii + Xenoblade was a perfect combination for me at the time. I'd have happily paid $150 for the Wii just to be able to buy that game and play it. Sheer gaming joy. If an HD remake comes out on the Wii U, I'd pay up to $200 for it. No question.

Wasn't that just awful. I felt so disconnected from gaming that way... Ugh...

Nintendo has at least been pushing their Wii U Pro Controller. I don't even like that much because my thumb has to bend at such a ridiculous angle to hit the B button down there. It's in such an awful position because of Nintendo's insistence on being different. The XBOX has the analog sticks staggered? The PS3 has the analogs at the bottom? Well we'll put them both at the top! Great idea Nintendo. Except the one thing both Sony and Microsoft agree on is that the freaking face buttons need to be at the top so you don't have to play finger yoga to press them!

Seriously, wtf with Nintendo...

Anyway, back to Mario 3D World. That game is kicking my ass right now (it gets HARD, especially in co-op).

A sequel (or spiritual sequel) is coming out for the Wii U. Hopefully we'll know more within the next few months.

The WiiU has more worthwhile games than people realize, I think, and it is going to get a hell of a lot better when Smash Bros/Mario Kart come out next year. My personal collection is New Super Mario Bros, Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D world, Pikmin 3, Rayman Origins*, Resident Evil Revelations*, Game and Wario, Wii Party U, and Wind Waker (I feel like I'm missing another one, but I could be wrong). I've thoroughly enjoyed all of these, so I don't regret my purchase at all (plus as someone who needs to share the TV with my wife and kid, playing off screen is a really convenient option). I can see how people could be turned off when you can get a PS4 for $100 bucks more, but once it comes down in price more I would encourage people to seriously consider it. It really is a system that you need to play to appreciate.

*I know these are multiplat, but I feel like the gamepad legitimately adds to both of them.

Here are the games I actively have for the WiiU:  (mind you I trade games after no play for greater than a month)

Disney Infinity

Scribblenauts Unlimited

Skylanders Giants

Lego City Undercover

New Super Mario Bros U

Lego Marvel Super Heroes

Sonic All-stars Racing Transformed

Nintendoland

Super Mario 3D world

Rayman Legend

The Wonderful 101

I can't count that many games in my current collection from any other device.  I think I'd have to combine all my systems (3DS, Vita, PS4, XB1) to have that many.  I play the game, I beat the game and I trade it.  That's why I like getting them cheap but for the WiiU.. I splurge for some reason.

It really is a shame the analog sticks are above the buttons.  It reminds me of how Nintendo had buttons since time immemorial that were B on the left, A on the right.

Sony came along with X and O, fine, but then for a lot of games, they made X confirm and O cancel (which makes nooooo fricking sense)--but it was not all games, just some.

Then Xbox came along with... A on the left, B on the right.

Are you fricking kidding me?

I know these are just small things, but it's annoying unless you are devoted to one company.  And even if you were just a Nintendo gamer, as was said, they have changed things up kind of annoyingly a number of times.

Yeah I saw the video teaser for it when it came out, and that's what made me never regret my Wii U purchase (probably!).
I wish they'd had some stuff like X or other RPGs around at launch. Maybe it wouldn't have helped much, but it couldn't hurt. I still don't get how/why companies are launching systems with no decent software. At least Sony had the sense to delay the PS4 in Japan. Which is an inelegant solution at best.

RPGs seem like they take far more time to develop than any other genre. Usually gamers are lucky if they see just one standout RPG exclusive within a year of a system's release. Sometimes it takes a platform a couple of years to get that RPG fans have been looking for.

MS, Sony, Nintendo can't really afford to sit on completed hardware for a year just so developers have enough time to make a quality game. It'd be nice if they could, but they just can't.

The number one priority is to establishing an install base to justify the development of those higher quality titles down the line. Launch games are often completed on hardware and software that is constantly evolving right up to the point when the system is released.

Right, but think back to the SNES and the N64. Nintendo launched them on the strength of a Mario game that was developed along with the system. It's just such a dichotomy, or chicken/egg problem. You need the hardware and install base to get people to develop, but you need decent games to get the install base. Seems like the best solution is to have a sure-fire launch title. But maybe surefire launch titles these days are Battlefield and such! Who knows. I have probably lost touch utterly. I have been a whiner pretty much all my videogame life. :) Should tell me something.

To be honest, launch titles like Super Mario World and Mario 64 are more exceptions than the rule. Typically, a console takes a year or two to find their feet as developers learn the capabilities of the new hardware.

I also find it sad when someone says, "I could have bought a PS4 and be playing COD or Battlefield". Really? The draw are two tired franchises that haven't really done anything new or creative in years. (I guess you can put that measure on Nintendo on the endless iterations of Mario games, but Nintendo mostly manages to make it fresh.)

I can understand the frustration a bit, but I have yet to see a game that makes the PS4 or the XBone a must-have. I figure it will take a year or two for that game to appear. Meanwhile, I know there are games I'll want to play next year on the Wii U.

Yeah, don't get me wrong; I totally agree with you in regards to the PS4 and Xbone. I have zero interest in anything. I think the games I'll want to play will be on PS4 and will be a ways off; I'm not much into Uncharted and the heavy-hitters, so...

And PS2 had this issue; heck even PS1 had this issue, and GameCube did, and Wii probably did too. 3DS certainly did, etc etc etc. I am just old :p And my memory of NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy etc etc is hazy anyway.

Probably what it comes down to is I'm saying "Hey companies, launch a system with games *I* want to play!" That doesn't work for everyone, though, just me. Obviously whatever there is on the new systems is enough for people.

I am quite happy with my Wii U, but it did take me a year to buy one.

The issue is, people now associate Nintendo with a lack of third party support. It's hard to see people justify buying a console just for Mario, when they can pay a little more for a PS4 or XB1 that can play almost every upcoming title. However, the real chicken/egg problem, is the way third party companies send games to the Wii U to die. If only to justify never bringing over another title.

Rayman Legends? This went from a launch title, to a launch window title, to the best version across platforms, to the second best version (Vita is the best. It has the touchscreen stuff, more costumes, additional levels and cost $20 dollars less).

Monster Hunter 3? Capcom or Nintendo dropped the ball and didn't release the Cross-Save program until a few days after launch (making it bumpy), the CS program was woefully poor next to the PS3/PSV CS program and is largely a pain in the ass. Even small things like you can only get CN coins from the 3DS version made it look poor.

Injustice? The Wii U version didn't get any (more or less) of the DLC until Zod was released on the PS3 / Xbox version. This was a huge blow, since these people supported the game and got a lesser version (especially when I could buy the dual pack at Walmart and get free DLC). When the GOTY edition came out, WB gave Nintendo the ol FU and they never got the complete version, thus killing any future sales for the Wii U version.

Aliens CM? Cancelled following the fiasco.

Deus EX? This went from an exclusive, to a multi platform, to a game SE wanted to fail. Despite costing $30 for the 360 and PS3 version, they wanted fucking $50 for it. You're paying a premium of 66% to play the Wii U version. Needless to say, few were amused.

Sonic Lost Worlds? Nights DLC was awful. 3DS version was the only one to get coins. Many were pissed Sonic took a turn for Mario and avoided it in general.

Now, did these problems happen because of a lack of support or did these games get a lack of support because of these problems? Obviously it is the latter, but companies no doubt thought they were testing the water and got screwed and in turn, won't try again.

The thing with the PS2 is that it probably had the best first year lineup of any console ever, though I don't know what came out for SNES or those earlier consoles to know for sure. At launch, there were new IPs like SSX, Midnight Club, and Timesplitters that were some big new franchises that started right at launch with established titles like Ridge Racer V, Tekken Tag Tournament, Madden/NHL 2001, Armored Core 2, Dynasty Warriors 2, and Dead or Alive 2. By the end of 2001, you had [customspoiler='Spoiler']Metal Gear Solid 2, Gran Turismo 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, Final Fantasy X, Rayman 2 Revolution, ATV Offroad Fury, Zone of the Enders, Red Faction, Twisted Metal: Black, Dark Cloud, NBA Street, Klonoa 2, Madden 2002, Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, Monster Rancher 2, Silent Hill 2, Devil May Cry, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, Soul Reaver 2, Burnout, Ace Combat 4, SSX Tricky, Splashdown, WWF Smackdown! Just Bring It, Frequency, NFL 2K2, Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Max Payne, Shadow Hearts, and Jade Cocoon II.[/customspoiler] The amount of quality western and eastern support in that first year is such a rare thing these days, as even the mighty Wii didn't have that many big games in its first year.

The PS2 was one of the best, if not the best console ever. It also had an incredible lifespan that probably won't be equaled.

What am I looking at? Is it not just one piece that flips up for each month?

Still haven't heard anything about the CD yet
The calendar is typically a series of cards in a paper holder that you switch for each month. It is actually pretty cool.

Now, did these problems happen because of a lack of support or did these games get a lack of support because of these problems? Obviously it is the latter, but companies no doubt thought they were testing the water and got screwed and in turn, won't try again.
Yeah, it's definitely ridiculous. 3rd parties test the water with shoddy ports of games the majority of us have already played on previous systems or PC. (In my case, I still haven't played them, but I got them cheap on Steam, by golly.) It really is a chicken/egg thing. What sort of baffles me is the PS4/Xbone success in comparison.

To Ubisoft's credit, they did ZombiU as well. I thought it was a great game, just not for me. It's a shame it didn't get the credit it deserved, though.

When I think about it, there is not a TON of 3rd-party support on 3DS. The best titles, at least for me, are Nintendo titles and then the Atlus/Xseed/etc stuff (the latter, I know, is not for everyone). I have a narrow focus though; maybe there are a lot of good 3rd-party 3DS games I'm not thinking of (that haven't come from Atlus and kin). I can only think of a few...

Yeah, that's true. Again, it's my own bias betraying me. I just remember when PS2 came out, complaining I wasn't interested in any of the games. Of course, Final Fantasy X and Shadow Hearts changed that. If I look at your list, though, Frisky, a lot of those (though granted not all) are Japanese developers. PS4 sure doesn't have a lot from Japanese developers. Not that you were making a PS4 comparison. I guess I am again just whining that "it was better in the past!" and "gamers only like crap now!"

And that is probably due, in good part, to those excellent early titles Frisky listed above. Which happened because developers were willing to get on-board (chicken/egg).

I'm tired and not thinking straight. :) Always enjoy chatting with you folks though.

About half of that list is Western-developed and the other half is Eastern, so it's well-balanced in a way that may never happen again due to the what platforms the West and East supports. Japan is heavily portable-focused, so many of those publishers favor the handhelds over consoles while the West is console-focused despite the 3DS doing well there. Sports and racing games used to be all over the PSP, but not the DS, and the Vita not doing gangbusters out of the gate seems to have killed that avenue for Western publishers.

Sucks for me, too (I know, it's always about me!), because I like Japanese games, Japanese games are on the portables, and portables are kind of de-emphasized in the West (despite the success of the 3DS).

Yup. I think Rayman Legends would have done better if it was on the Wii U first.

Yeah, the 3DS has a lot of support, but the PSP / V never took off.

I bought a Wii U...I have a 5 game rule. If there are 5 games for a system that are out or will be soon then I will get the system. Nintendo is hurting with the Wii U for sure, but I guess it will do better than the Gamecube I hope....
I also follow the 5 game rule.

The Wii U in comparison has a ton of content that appeals to me, but I can see how it might not appeal to others.

Different strokes for different folks.
You guys aim low.

I won't touch a system without at least a dozen games that I want to play. They ain't there yet.

Gamecube had over 60 titles by the time all was said and done. I didn't buy many multiplats on that system either. It helps that at least about 10 were imports that SHOULD have come out over here, but the GC had TONS more 3rd party support than the Wii U currently does, which is a damn shame. Even the Wii had some really good 3rd party exclusives. Zombie U is the only one that comes up in my mind currently released. Fire Emblem x SMT and X aren't out yet.

A price drop (or three) and a stronger library need to happen before I jump in (HD remakes do not a system make)

How are Fire Emblem X SMT and X third party? Fire Emblem X SMT developed between Atlus and Intelligent System, which is about "half" third party with Nintendo footing the bill (isn't this the same as first / second party at this point?). X is made by Monolith Soft, which is a subsidiary of Nintendo and makes it first party.

What the hell? I'm gluten-free and vegan, but I'm also cheap and would have a hard time saying no to free pizza. How do you get this??

Too bad it's not based on 3DS purchases instead of Wii U. I deserve pizza for my support of the 3DS.
I'm a little sad to hear this, since I doubt I'll get selected, but I spent a fair share of money on Wii U games... all on day 1 no less.

Yeah no kidding!  I even bought my stuff on the eShop, not at retail.  I want a cookie at least.

There just isn't that much I'm interested in on Wii U, but I'm a 3DS hero.  Reggie, come on!  Hooks me up.

I think I knew he used to work for Pizza Hut, but I didn't remember.  They should do more promotions.

Oh wait.  I stopped eating pizza.  :(  I seriously don't even miss anything else.

Indeed. A few of mine were eShop, but I don't like digital. I might be a youngster, but I still prefer my stuff to be physical. If only to look at the box art, display it, fun extras.

He did work for Pizza hut a while ago.

That's fair enough. I would think if anyone deserves some free Wii U pizza, it's you, retail or otherwise!

Thank you! Though I would be okay if I get nothing. I mean, I don't register much because CN isn't worth registering over 600 coins a calendar year.

No, it really sort of isn't. I doubt they read all my laboriously-written comments (where I say "I want more RPGs!!" over and over) anyway. I like getting the free games.

My comments are usually half assed, because I end up writing reviews before doing them or got little to say. "Why did you buy A Link Between Worlds?" me "I like classic Zelda".
