[customspoiler=Basic FAQ]
-Basic Info/Overview
For those that don't know Club Nintendo is Nintendo's loyalty program of sorts. When you buy a Nintendo Console/Handheld, or a Nintendo published game, you get a pin that you can enter online to earn points. These points can then be redeemed for games, accesories, and collectable items. If you earn enough points in a Club year (300 for gold and 600 for platinum, which each have their own reward), you also receive a free bonus only available to a select few. You can read the full list of eligible titles, as well as their point value, here.

-How do I get coins for digital purchases?
In order to earn coins on any digital games you purchase on Wii/WiiU/3DS/DSi, you will first need to link you Club Nintendo account to your system. Instruction for doing so can be found here.

-Can I play the Wii games on my Wii-U?
Yes, but as of now, only in Wii mode. Native Wii U support might be added later on, but will most likely require the typical $1-$1.50 fee to transfer over.

-How do I play Wii games on Wii U
You will need to enter Wii mode on your Wii U. Instructions on doing so can be found http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/features_wii_menu.jsp?menu=wii_shop&submenu=wup-wiishop-ht-redeem-code"]here[/url].

- If I don't spend coins for the entire year long period, do they carry over?
Yes, you can keep your coins past the Club Nintendo year they are redeemed in. However they only count toward gold or platinum status for the Nintendo year (june 31st-july 1st) they are redeemed in. After two years old points do expire, so make sure to spend them before then. You can check Coin balance information while, logged in, at the top of the page.

- Is there a list of previous rewards for people who accumulated a lot of coins? Similar to Square Enix's Ultimate Tier?
The extra rewards for Club Nintendo are for those that accumulate enough points to hit Gold or Platinum status (300 and 600 points, respectively). If you reach the required number of points in a year, Nintendo will automatically send you your reward, with no cost to you or your points.

- Does the list of eligible games update as the games come out or on some sort of schedule?
The list will be updated before the game comes out, do to things like Pre-Purchase bonus points. Any game you can buy, should already be on the list and able to redeem.

- When do they typically announce the prizes for Gold and Platinum?
Generally at the end of a Club Nintendo year, but don't expect it anytime soon. Usually it will take at least several months for them to ship it out.

- Is there anyway to enter multiple copies of the same game or device?
They have an option in the settings to make your account a family account, which means it can have sub-accounts that allows you to register multiple copies of games. The coins from all the sub-accounts all end up in the same main account coin collection.

- How does the site show what balance of coins you have to spend versus your total towards Gold/Platinum?
At the top right of the screen you can see the coin counter. The big number is your total coin amount, and the bar underneath is your progress to gold or platinum status. The number needed to advance is displayed directly above said bar. Redeeming your coins does not affect this counter, as it is only reset at the end of the year.

- How can I tell if a code is valid without redeeming it?
If you want to check if a code has already been registered, without registering it yourself, all you need to do is try entering the code while you are logged out. It will tell you the name of the game, as well as how many points it is worth, without activating it.[/customspoiler]

Let me know if I missed anything or if something breaks!

I keep seeing the site down for maintenance periodically. I don't think we should be expecting anything changing this month. Maybe next month.

I will go look at my modem and see. I guess I will need to remove my plaitnum GBA player to get to the modem.
No need, I think they only display the nintendo seal of approval anyway, here's an article from when both the modem & broadband were announced: http://m.ign.com/articles/2001/09/26/nintendo-gamecube-modem-adapter

I was originally going to snag Earthbound, but I've yet to list my old Flame Red 3DS for sale on eBay, so I think I'll probably nab DKCR3D and include that to boost its value a bit. (I was originally planning on doing this with the freebie Pokemon Y some time ago but I got lazy and didn't list it in time, so I had to sell the code separately.)

Thoughts?

And I just found a stack of Club Nintendo codes I didn't remember I had.  Redeemed them all, and I'm already to Gold now, but I had more than enough to make it to Platinum, and I missed it.  Crud.  CRUD!

I'm not a very young person...I did have a NES when I was a kid, I just never played Kid Icarus.  I only have 625 club nintendo coins...it 3D Classics: Kid Icarus worth getting? or should I save my coins for something better? I'm new to club nintendo. I'm tempted to use the coins but part of me wants to hold out for something I know I will like.

Thoughts?

Out of curiosity, what exactly would you be waiting for? Is there some recent prize that's currently out of stock that you're hoping to get, are you hoping they'll get new stuff that's really cool, or are you just holding out for some games? I get the distinct feeling that Club Nintendo isn't, at this point, likely to add anything truly interesting for a physical redemption. I think they are leaning towards going digital at this point. If it's other games you want, 650 points is plenty to get other games.

Another way to look at it is: are you saving money by getting the game, or are you just spending points on something you're not super interested in? If you'd spend money on Kid Icarus, then it's a good idea to get it imo. If you're not really saving money because you wouldn't spend money, then you could wait without really losing much.

Sorry for edit, mousepad is super sensitive and some combination of my hand sliding across it hit the send button.

I'm not interested in anything physical. I never even look at that list. Pretty much only interested in games. I don't have a Wii-U yet. So far I've only spent coins on Mario RPG(assuming I will use it on wii-u when I eventually get one) and Donkey Kong Junior on 3ds.

Mostly interested in having more games to play on my 3ds. I know some games have been put up more then once. Wouldn't mind getting some classics like zelda dx, zelda, zelda 2, a metroid, or an old mario.

If something good on the eshop for 3ds became available, who knows, maybe i'd go for that.

So pretty much waiting for some good games on 3ds. Never played kid icarus so while i'm interested in it, not sure if I wanna spend on that.

To be absolutely honest, most of the games they put up, in my opinion, are absolute garbage I wouldn't spend 10 coins on, much less 200. If you have a Wii U, or plan to get one, that certainly increases the odds that they'll put up a game you definitely want. Another way to look at it, however, is that if you spend CN coins on games you aren't sure about, then you've not lost any real money.

Well...it's your opinion, but I think the games they put up aren't too bad. I agree with you to some extent...but I found a list of the monthly free games and have seen some classics in the past. If anything zelda, metroid, or mario(maybe not some of the sports games) became available I'd probably get those in a second.

While I think I'll get a wii-u eventually, I sorta regret getting mario RPG for wii-u and would probably trade it to someone that had a code for a game I can play on 3ds.

Still thinking about Kid Icarus...and have a lil over a week to decide if I want to use my points. If anyone has a lot of points and wants to trade for my mario rpg wii-u code, I probably would.

Personally speaking, I don't think the games they put up are bad, but I would say Nintendo likes to offer the same classics as if they need to remind us "We made Zelda, Mario, Metroid and other crap!" For instance, who hasn't played Kirby's Adventure and why did you need to offer it on different platforms two months in a row? I would much prefer Nintendo started offering newer and more interesting games like Pushmo, though at this point I am getting way off topic.

Long story short, if you want the same tired games or something they offered in the past, then you're best off waiting. Nintendo likes to play it way to safe with Club Nintendo and you're all but assured anything they offered before, most (I don't see DK or Wario going this way) of the elite rewards or anything they've resold to death like Super Mario Bros. 3 being offered.

Yeah, I'm with you in the Mario RPG regret.

I'm pretty picky about games to be fair, and I also have ambassador status so I tend to disregard any games that I have as a result of that, even though obviously not everyone would have them already.

Just in case someone wants to choose the prize purely based on the game's cost... (Canada eShop prices)

  • :wiiu: Game & Wario - $39.99
  • :wiiu: NES Remix - $16.49
  • :wiiu: EarthBound - $9.99
  • :wiiu: Dr. Luigi - $16.49
  • :3ds: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - $34.99
  • :3ds: Fluidity: Spin Cycle - $11.99
  • :3ds: Dillon's Rolling Western - $11.99
  • :3ds: Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move - $10.99
Not listing gold because they're obviously cheaper than platinum.

Guess I'll get G&W, since I'd never get that game unless it was free. Any opinions about it?

Quick question. If I buy the digital version of MK8, will I still get a free game if I already recieved one from the physical version?

Not on the same account. One promotional game per account. If you make a new family account and link your Wii U to that account before you buy MK8 digitally then it will work

Not listing gold because they're obviously cheaper than platinum.

Guess I'll get G&W, since I'd never get that game unless it was free. Any opinions about it?
It sucks, but you don't have much better in the way of options. Maybe the DKCR port if you've never played that game at all.... otherwise I suppose G&W is the way to go.

This may or may not be worth mentioning in the first post, but you can actually get coins just for downloading game demos from the eShop. I got two for Rusty's Real Deal Baseball (3DS); five coins for "registering", since the demo is essentially the full game and has in-app purchases, and ten coins for the post-play survey. I also got post-play surveys for Jett Rocket 2 (3DS), Pokemon Bank (3DS), and Zen Pinball 2 (Wii U).

I really have no idea why some games are worth coins when others aren't; while Jett Rocket 2 is a Club Nintendo eligible game, Zen Pinball 2 isn't. There are also eligible games (such as Sonic Lost World) which don't give surveys for playing the demos. I can only assume that some publishers make deals with Nintendo to get feedback from their demos or something like that.

Because they're considered the actual game and are "freemium".

If anyone still doesn't want there Platinum reward send me a PM. I've got some other Club Nintendo game codes or a couple of $5 Xbox codes if you're are interested in that.

That's true of Rusty's Real Deal Baseball and Zen Pinball 2, but I've gotten coins for several random demos over the last couple years.
Everything I've gotten coins for like that have been freemium titles. Give us some demos that give coins so we can all cash in on them!

The only non-freemium one currently available (that I've downloaded, anyway) is Jett Rocket 2. Speaking of freemium games, I just remembered Steel Diver: Sub Wars. I pretty much ignored it when it was announced, but that one can get you a free fifteen coins.

anybody want a copy of grill off for the wii. i was going to redeem the code but I doubt I will ever play it. Plus my wii isn't even hooked up.
