I am pretty sure there is no way to check them. People have mentioned putting the code into Club Nintendo without being logged into an account. It doesn't work though, I have tested it with an unused code and a used code and both of them give the same page as response. Is it possible to "test" a club nintendo code without redeeming it? My friend gave me an extra Fire Emblem code but I don't know if it's valid and I don't need it because I already have one. I plan on selling it in addition to the other one I'm selling but I want to make sure it's a good code first. Any tips? Thanks!

If you already own/registered the code for the game, you can redeem it and if no error message pops up, its a working code, if it does, then its obvious
