I know this is a couple days old but anyway:

1UP: Speaking of your enemies, Tekken 5 just came out in North America (and we know how you feel about Tekken), but doesn't feature any sort of online play, multi-tiered stages, or tag-team play. Do you think they chickened out of the online arena?

Itagaki: First they put in all of these half-finished "features", then they take them right out again. Tag fights, elevation differences, walls. I don't know if it's because they're impatient, or because they lack the ability, but no matter the reason those guys are a pretty weird bunch. Any of those things would have become a bonafide feature if they took the time to do it right (laughs). Oh, and come on guys, let's quit trying to hide the prehistoric nature of the main product by tacking on some absurd "bonus game." I have been saying this for 5 years, haven't I? If you have the time to make an action-style "bonus game", why don't you create an honest-to-god action game and sell it as a standalone product? Oh, and if you're going to bother including such a "unique" form of ball play, you should do a beach volleyball game instead (laughs).

Oh, that's right, I forgot something important. You guys did do a "bonafide" action game, didn't you? What was it called again? Oh yeah, NINA: Death by Degrees.

 Personally, if I want a good fighting game, I don't pick up DOA or Tekken. And I like (sarcasm) how he disses Tekken by saying they have no online play. Last time I tried DOA was pretty crap online.

Yeah I was going to say the same thing

I tried out Tekken 5 briefly and it seemed to me that there is a lot of emphasis in launching, since air combos are guaranteed. But it seemed that the successive blows while in the air required timing rather than buffering.

I played some DOA:U later that night, and I actually like it better. 40-50% combos are silly, but so are 40-50% counters.

imo the doa games arent good fighting games at all...VF games are better, and SF games are my fav...havent played much of tekken games though...

I've never been able to get into Tekken, DOA, or Soul Calibur. I pretty much thought they all looked nice, but sucked terribly. I like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Marvel vs. Capcom stuff.

Tekken is really the only fighting series I don't like. The first one was decent and I did play it alot because it was the only fighting game at my crappy arcade. But I would take any other Fighting series over it any day.

I personally like DOA a hell of alot more then Tekken.

considering dead or alive aint all the great mr itagaki should focuse on a better fighting game than try to make gamers hornier than they already are.

What doesn't Itagaki hate that isn't on Xbox? DOA is crap compared to Tekken, VF, SC, and most other fighters. He just likes to hear himself talk out of his ass.

Dead or Alive is MUCH more fun than Tekken in my opinion. Also, I have had an extremely fun time online with DOA:U. After upgrading to a 1.5mbit connection, the game has been smooth as silk online.

And I actually agree with most of what Itagaki says here, too.

Yup...DOA is a great series but in terms of fun and enjoying the game, I hadmore fun and enjoyed Tekken than I did DOA. SC2 and Tekken Tag are my favorite fighters to have been released this generation.

I think I enjoy the crap that comes out of Itagaki's mouth more than either Dead or Alive or Tekken. The guy's hillarious, you don't see many game developers with a mix of such press whoring and humor. I'll admit, I've taken a few dumps while reading over the Itagaki section in XBN

They should have a Tekken vs. DOA game.
I second this
I third this. This would be awesome now that I think about it. Maybe they would make either a SC vs. Tekken game or a Tekken vs. DOA vs. SC. Oohh....think of the possibilities.

Well after reading Itagaki's answer to 1up's question I doubt that will ever happen.

He really likes Metal Gear Solid. In one interview, he talked about how much he admired Kojima.

I believed in that same interview (or maybe another), he actually meantioned him and Kojima being drinking buddies. I thought that was pretty interesting

I agree with everyone else, I love DOA a ton more than Tekken. I had an argument with a gamer about this, they were saying Tekken 5 would sell stellar numbers despite the lack of online play or modes. They even went so far as to say it'd sell more than Resident Evil 4. I can't see why anyone would want Tekken 5.

In my opinion, both games are very impressive, but Itagaki can be full of himself at times...

I love the guy (heck, he is the ONLY reason why I own an Xbox), but he can be an ass.

In my opinion, Tekken has been a bit crummy (talking about past tekkens) when compared to how well DOA played (after 2 was released). I know itagaki has NOT played Tekken 5, and all I can say is that Tekken 5 is the most ballanced fighting game I've ever played (other than VF), plus the most unique.

DOA is great and amazing, but I don't have as much respect for it as much as Tekken... long live Namco... and Team Ninja...

I just think Itagaki needs to at least one day something else is better than what he makes... jeeze, he's not a god or something...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he mentioned that. Now I'm remembering something else. You know how Kojima has been saying he wasn't gonna make another Metal Gear Solid since either 2 or 3? Well, I could've sworn that Itagaki said that Kojima asked him if he would make the next MGS. Hmmm, I may be wrong, but I remember an interview of some Japnese developer that said that...

This?

Itagaki always seems to get in the news when he's putting some game or another system down more than for the games he makes. I've played DOA and found it the most shallow fighting game I've ever played and pretty much only good if you like to stare at boobs all the time while fighting. Give me VF4 or TTT any day.

The only reason that Dead or Alive is even kind of fun is pulling off lame-ass counters that do more damage than actual fighting will ever do...and then watching your friends yell profanities at you for countering every move they try.

Frankly I kinda hate both games now, they used to both be easy to get into even for non hard core fighting gamers but now you have to be a math prodigy to remember the combos and controls for a single character in either game.

Atleast VF started hard and stayed hard so I could dislike it early.

To hell with all of you, Clayfighter is the best fighting game ever, with a close second being Boxing on the Atari 2600!!!!

ok.. kidding... sleep deprivation kicking in..

DOA2/3 are my favorite fighting games ever. I use to be a big Tekken fan, but once I got to play DOA2 on the DC I've never even considering going back. The DOA series is much more advanced(and fun) IMO.

you can play Tekken 5 for 10 minutes and see that it is an awesome game. Everything is amazing. I am not a big Tekken fan, but even I have appreciation for a great game when I see one.

DOA on the other hand is shit. Complete and utter shit. I am glad I did not pay much for DOA 3 as I completely hated that game and will never play another DOA game. I put around an hour or so into it, and have never been more bored with a fighting game in my life.

Team Ninja needs to stick to things they are good at, like action adventure games, instead of crappy fighting games that have good graphics and shitty gameplay

He's said this everytime somebody asks him and to a degree I agree with him....the Tekken developers tend to include some half-assed features and bonuses that while fun for a few minutes, don't do much of anything. Plus I think the DOA online play is decent amd you have to give him credit for making the first 3D fighter online run halfway decent. In the end though, I really look at the 2 as separate fighters and enjoy both. I do like his final comment about Death by Degreees, the seemed like the half-assed mini game bonus to be included with the next Tekken installment while IMO Team ninja created one of the (if not thee) best 3D action games of this generation.

Street Fighter > Soul Calibur > Virtua Fighter > DOA > Tekken

The first 3 are up for debate. Also you could throw Guilty Gear in there if you so desire, but I have never been able to get too into it. Anyway, while I feel that neither Tekken nor DOA is that great, at least DOA is kind of fun.

Virtua Fighter > Tekken >>> Soul Caliubr >>>>>> Street Fighter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DOA

DOA's shallow and unjoyable except for the boobs; Street Fighter's alright but hasn't advanced much since SF2; Soul Calibur's good, but not much changed between the first and second; Tekken's fun, with quite a few unlockables and a bunch of cool characters; Virtua Fighter is deep, VF4 rocks with the AI training mode, and it looks great with morphing environments and some cool characters.

My thoughts exactly...cept the 3D MK games suck ass I think.

Ahh, sir Casey, I do not agree. I did try Tekken 5 out for a few minutes.. I was impressed when the floor cracked when a person was slammed down, but that's about it. Nothing there that grabbed me and made me want to play for a while. On the other hand, I don't think DOA is that impressive either (though I like it a lot more than Tekken). The only fighter(s) that have really interested me are the MK ones (pre-DA, none of that 3D crap), and Fighting Vipers (that game ruled). Fighters do get repetitive quickly.. I did like Tekken 3, but that's the only one. Eddy was cool.

there isnt any rememberable characters in DOA besides the chicks with the enormous breasts(dont know their names... hell who cares? THEY GOT BIG BOOBS!), but in tekken you have a bunch of badass characters like king, jin, yoshimitsu, and heihachi.

That's weird, Tekken 5 basically plays and feels like 3, except for the huge selection of characters and better graphics.

MK4 was pre-DA AND 3D.

In my experience a quality DOA player is harder to defeat than a quality Tekken player. DOA is much less of a button smasher. I'm a good DOA player and my friend is of about the same skill w/ Tekken. When we play I can win 50+ DOA3 matches in a row without problem, but in Tekken 4 I manage to keep his streaks to a minimum and often win a lot of matches without knowing what I'm doing half the time.

Yaeh I agree. I really feel that from what I have played of it, Namco has really brought Tekken full circle with this one. It truly feels like 3, which IMO is the best of the series. 4 was good but it just didn't feel right for a Tekken game. This one is just pure fun.

A lot of people claim DOA is shallow, or a button masher, or that countering is broken. Not in the least. Play the game online--not only is the game much more in depth than you might have probably imagined (I was surprised myself, and I always liked the series), but the game is not even close to a button-mashing paper-rock-scissors fight. Play against somebody who knows what they're doing (like a SS), and they will kick your ass. Countering is one of the most risky things you can do in this game, and most skilled players use it sparingly, opting for a simple block instead. I'll admit DOA 3 was more of a button masher, but DOA 2:U is much, much more balanced.
