Ever since Capitol One took over the Sony Card it has become a useless pile of hedgehog shit, so I'm actively searching for a new primary credit card. Is there a particular card/rewards program that folks seem to get the most out of? I'm probably looking cashback since airline rewards mean nothing to me, and being stuck to a retailer's product catalog has proven lame thanks to the current state of Sony.

Your input is appreciated!

If you shop at Amazon that's the best you can do. They give you 5 points because Amazon is considered a bookstore. 10k points is a $100 Amazon gift card. Do paperless statements and spend $250 within the first 3 months and you get 8,500 points. When I signed up it was spend $650 but they gave you 9k points and 1k for the paperless. They have other gift cards and flying rewards but I shop at Amazon for 90% of my stuff so...

I've only had one credit card and that was for about 1.5 years. Always paid it off etc...This is the 2nd card I've gotten. They gave me a $4,000 credit line which is absolutely insane but it's better than my $500 credit line for the first card.

My glorious points! These babies bought me: Lego Mindstorms NXT 2.0 and previously NXT 1.0. After I got this and starting using it I cut up my AMEX Blue card.

Right now I'm using the Chase Freedom card mainly since they have an offer of spend $500 in the first 3 months and get $300 cash back. The citi forward looks like a decent card though

Chase is ok from my experience. I miss the days of my WaMu card. Originally I had a WaMu Visa card but went to Chase after the buyout.[/QUOTE]

I thought about going Amex, but I was on a business trip in Canada, and about 75% of the places I went, they wouldn't accept it. It was the company credit card, so instead I had to use my personal Visa, then get reimbursed.

Last night I saw a commercial for a B of A card (used to have one, but they fouled up mailing me statements for three months, then refused to remove one late payment fee as a courtesy when I hadn't late paid a bill in my life. Their VP of Customer Service actually called me and told me they were using my call in their training sessions now because it was an example of all the wrong things to do with respect to Customer Service). Anyway, the B of A commercial was 1% cashback on normal purchase, 2% on groceries, 3% on gas. Seems decent. I bank there, so I might check it out today.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, keep em coming!

Same. Have had it for a few years and never had any issues and love the rewards as I shop a ton at Amazon so I earn a lot of triple points.

Yeah, thats the downside of AMEX, not everyone takes them. Mainly because they have a higher merchant fee if I remember correctly. The upside is that if you have any problems, they get resolved right then. For example, back in late Feb '10, they called me to inquire about a 1200 dollar charge that had just been made. It sure as hell wasn't me that did it! Literally, within the first couple minutes of the call, they said they were sending me another card and they had taken care of everything, right as I was about to ask to cancel that card and send me another. Not to mention the many instances of a merchant screw up and they jump right on it.

Just seems the one card I can never get is a MasterCard. Or as I say about them, "Everywhere you want to be, but don't have the credit limit for!"

Here's a better Citi Forward offer. It's the one I signed up for.

The Amazon card doesn't even come close to the Citi Forward card considering you can get 5 points for shopping at Amazon with the Forward Card vs only 3 for using the Amazon card

Too high. Not that I have a problem with it but considering my yearly income is only 15k to 17k...well yea

Gotcha. Yea, I have one that has a credit limit that is about 1/4 my annual income as well (which seems incredibly high).

And that Citi forward card sounds great. I am on the road for work a lot, so I regularly eat out for meals (while saving some per diem too). Getting 5% back on most every meal I eat during a week would be awesome. Plus I shop at Amazon a lot.

As a citi forward owner i should clarify that you do NOT get 5% back on purchases. You earn 5 thank you points for every dollar spent on restaurants/movie theatres/bookstores (including amazon). Those points are redeemable on the thank you network for things like best buy or amazon gift cards, or a wide array of video games/accessories. Personally I have only redeemed my points for gift cards because like most other CAGers I can find better deals on games etc.

So if your looking for cash back to take off your monthly statements this may not be the card for you. 3500 Thank you points will earn you a $25 best buy or amazon gift card. That would be 700 dollars a month in applicable spending which including non bonus purchases(1 point for every dollar spent) is about what I earn each month. Not quite 5% if you want to look at it that way but still not too shabby. If you actually build up your thank you points you can get more bang for them as they have $50 gift cards for 6000 points and on occasion $100 cards for 10,000 points.

There are literally tens of thousands of things to redeem your thank you points for I'm only mentioning BB and Amazon GC because they relate to games specifically. Hope that clears this up a little bit.

I use the Citi Forward card and I love it. It's true that you can't always redeem your points at the rate of 1 point per penny, but if you have patience and check their website every now and then you can find some really good rates. For example, last time I cashed out my points they were doing $100 Amazon e-gift cards for 9,000 points.

I just got my 500 in amazon gift cards for spending 2500 within 3 months with the thank you premier citibank card. and actually got 525 because of the amount I was spending plus the 50k bonus points for spending. so it was a pretty great deal.

http://creditcards.citicards.com/usc/thankyou/Premier/offer/Sept2011/50k/default.htm?BT_TX=1

the deal is actually changed on their main website to only 30k points now.. But if you use signup from that link. you still get the 50k deal.

Just remember to cancel before 12 months to avoid the yearly fee of 125.00. (then find another good sign up bonus creditcard)
