*DEAD* Circuit City mistake - 5 dollar games!! (YMMV)

You know, every time one of these deals come up, I end up losing just a little bit more respect for the userbase of CAG.
Nice that you felt the need to post.
Until then you are either a vulture or a noob. Take your pick.
Okay. Than may I ask why you feel that way?
Because this isn't a deal.
For those that exploited it when it's misrung itself due to an error when they input the deal, I doesn't bother me all that much.
While it does bothers me that so many are being so outrightly greedy and selfish about it (buying 10+ games),it's something that CC has brought on itself for the errors in its' programming and not remediating the error.

But there are two specific things that are bothering me about some of the posts, that are usually common in these type of "exploit" deals.
First, are the ones who piss and moan about how they can't get the deal, or bitch about the cashiers that won't let them rape the store.
Second, and even more vexing, are the ones who are at stores that are either remediating the situation, or never had the error, and people are defrauding them to get the deal.

While I wouldn't take part in the deal, I can understand why some would.
People casually using it doesn't seem all that bad to me... but people the people conducting fraud and those bitch about people actually doing thier job just bug me... and this happens in every single exploit thread.
Thank you to everyone who has given me props on this thread.

And, I would like to apologize for being harsh earlier. It just irked me that everyone was flaming me for being "vague". I just assumed you would all be slick and just take advantage of CC's mistake. I never thought anyone would ask them to use a specific package. Sorry about the assumption.

Happy CAGing!! Merry X-Mas!
Thanks for being so cool about it. We all owe you a big 'ole thanks, so THANKS! :D
Anyone know of any circuit citys that carry Katamari Damancy? We'd probably be able to pick that up too if it was available.
Ha, never quoted myself before :D

I just called several CC's and none have ever even carried Katamari so i guess no luck there.

I think this thread needs another warning label...

man if you look back at the first 5 pages its nothing but everyone being an asshole to the guy who posted the deal... sad.. i didnt read the last 10 pages of this thread but i hope atleast a couple of people appologized and/or thanked him for the deal.

I understand what you're saying to an extent. I don't fully agree, but I see where you're coming from and I respect that. In any case I don't feel guilty whatsoever. Not because I'm heartless or out to screw the major businesses, but because the CC employees not only told me about the deal, but encouraged me to buy more and more games. They even picked some out for me and told me about them and asked if I'd be interested in it. I love Circuit City. :D

No go at my local CC. It was about to work w/ some nice girl cashier helping me out and then this punk employee, not even a manger just some kid, came over and he told her you had to price adjust rather then apply the package. He refered to the glitch so I said no thanks, gave him a dirty look and I left.

There is extremely little chance this will work anywhere by tomorrow morning. Congrats to those that got in on it.

And I said this earlier in the thread: no matter if this was error or on purpose, SOMEONE abuses this... I've said so many times that if you go about this in a certain manner, it's fine... not necessarily acceptable, but fine... now I read people doing EXACTLY what I said: being asshats and really abusing the error... Jesus... 'I had to take two trips to the register because the limit of 12 per transaction was reached.' is the type of stuff that has no place here, and it certainly will have a trickledown effect in terms of CC being a bit more harsh in terms of limits, such as a mandatory Limit 2 per customer per day rule...

I hope this will still work tomorrow. My dads going to take me. I'm picking up:

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Kirby Air Ride
Super Monkey Ball
Spiderman
Midway Arcade Treasures 2
Need for Speed: Underground

Some games might seem kiddy but they are just a couple I need to complete my collection.

Ok so i showed up late to this party.... damn.

I guess i'll stop by my CC tomorrow and see if this is still going on. Anyone know if this has been corrected by CC?

Nothing wrong with those. It's the kiddy ones that can be surprisingly fun. Katamari Damacy is one of those games that looks kiddy, but is amazing. I never rule out "kiddy" games... except maybe Bob the Builder or something like that...

yep. I think everyone owes him a big apology. I saw this posted this morning and saw everyone crapping on this thread because he was new and the deal seemed too good to be true. I wasn't so sure about the deal either, but I didn't feel the need to jump on the OP. I think most people couldn't understand who it worked by the way he was describing it.

Anyway. THANKS OP! I haven't picked up any games. Might check it out tomorrow. Don't think I need any more games piling up, but still a good deal nonetheless.
Sorry, guessed, but your understanding is wrong. Reread the first post he made.

Go into your local CC and pick up any Players Choice or Greatest hits game and have the tard there ring it up using package #2 (The one for Platinum hits, etc.). They will all ring up for 5$, not $15 like they are supposed to!!

This suggests that they are NOT to be using the "Package #2" key during this promo. He's suggesting that you tell the cashier to purposely misring the game. Heck, one might as well go to the counter and say. "I really want this $50 game. Please ring it in as $5.
Hey, at least if you go up to a cashier and tell them you want to only pay 5 dollars for a 50 dollar game, you are being honest. If the employee accepts that, then its just merely a barter at that point. :)

I was feeling guilty about it myself until the guy ringing me up poitned out that VF4E was $15 and didn't qualify. It broke the ice a little and made me feel better.

I sure as hell am not going to read all 17 pages of this thread, so what I'm saying has most likely been said several times already. But, the deal works, kinda YMMV.
It all depends on the ignorance (or lack thereof) of your local CC. The first one I went to in San Bernardino, the games rang up right, but without hesitiation the cashier changed the prices. When I saw this, I opened up my wallet and "oops, what did i did with my money!?!?!?" ;) ( I was going to pay with my CC all along). Anways, I then went to my Moreno Valley CC and it worked there. Don't know about Riverside CC for all you locals.

And BTW thanks again OP. I apoplogize again on behalf of all who flamed you.

it's funny how you just happened to "remember" the employee talking to you in a condescending manner AFTER someone replied to your post. I still don't think you should've gotten mad at the guy. If it were me working there, I probably would've shot you down too. He was probably informed by a higher authority that he shouldn't do that, and was just trying to save his own butt.

And yes, I give credit to the OP for this deal... the reason for my reaction way in the beginning was that we get a lot YMMV posts which you know up front are YMMV... it was the way the deal sounded initially and the number of posts by the user... I personally felt it was a lurker just looking to get a rise, but I've been wrong before and admit that this time...

Why should anyone have to apologize to this guy? Not only did he not have the presence of mind to explain the deal in detail, but he acted like an asshole when people didn't understand him at first.

Plus, he seemed motivated by the fact that he was "screwing" Circuit City.

sorry. I shouldn't have jumped on YOU particularly. People do it all the time. I know the feeling of being shot down and left frustrated, but you made it seem like it was the CC employee's fault. The people who got this deal should just be grateful, and the people who don't, no big deal. There will be plenty more deals to come. I try not to let it get to me if I miss something like this. There will be something just as great in a few weeks.

Agreed... I was cautious to believing this, but it's the first time I can remember in which a deal of this magnitude was posted by someone with so few posts. Not to be judgemental, but in 99% of cases like this.. it is a prank.

And thanks to the guy at CC corporate who was pissed at the man, for having his thumb on his back.. and not giving him a raise.. and thus inducing him to add an extra character when he coded this deal into the computer :)

I researched before saying "my shit". SteveGo retracts quite a bit in his next post. Had he mentioned that in his comment, I wouldn't be so quick to jump on him.

Yes, I gave the OP a hard time in the first few posts, and no, I'm not about to appologize. He posted a scam, in the manner he originally broached the topic. While some people were able to benefit from it without being scammers, it doesn't change that the OP was questionable at best.

You know, following your own advice can work wonders some times.

Wow I don't remember using the term selfish asshole, I just said he was a punk, and that was because of the way he talked to me in a condescending manner. Maybe I should have included that in my original post. But also it sucks to deal with a guy like that when I hear about employees at other stores encouraging people to go back for more. Thanks for jumping all over me though, it'll make me think twice before posting at this forum ever again.
it's funny how you just happened to "remember" the employee talking to you in a condescending manner AFTER someone replied to your post. I still don't think you should've gotten mad at the guy. If it were me working there, I probably would've shot you down too. He was probably informed by a higher authority that he shouldn't do that, and was just trying to save his own butt.
Well it seems that you two are higher and mightier then I am, excuse me for getting upset that I took the time to drive to CC and got shot down. Obviously you have a much more even keel outlook and have never experienced frustration for getting shot down at a deal such as this. And you wonder why there are people who are lurkers and don't post. I post one time about my experience and two members jump down my throat, thanks for the pleasantries.
SteveGo, dont worry about it. Sweeny will rip anyone a new asshole, especially if they ask for it. The other guy...well, i have no clue who he is. Whatever. I understand the fact that you dont have to do an exact play-by-play, but when a deal is as tricky/weird as this, demeanot\r does count.

Congrats to those that got in on it.
Well maybe I should not have refered to him as a punk, but it was upsetting that many other employees let the deal slide and even encouraged custumers. I've worked retail before, during the holidays, and personally I would have been more than happy to hook people up with this deal, but thats just my personality. As of now you're right, I am over it. I'm more bitter now because of the experience of posting here, which I always thought was a great forum filled with good people. I'm starting to think and see otherwise. Thanks for the apology anyways, too bad Jsweeney can't be as mature as you.

I salute you Circuit City System Typo Man! If it weren't for your stupidity or rebellion or outright carelessness, the world would be a dangerous place. Your sacrifice was a worthy one, and I award you the Purple Heart of Cheap Ass Gaming and a posthumous two rank Circuit-City promotion! :notworth:

just got back...the guy who rang me out overrode the prices on my four games, mumbling about"some damn glitch". I'll try again tomorrow on my lunch break.
very ymmv. The *glitch* was active at the Tallahassee CC, but the clerk (and manager) refused to sell them to me at 4.99.

The Tally CC is run by a bunch of jackasses though, so other CAGers around here might have better luck than me.
ah damn! Thanks Continental. saved me the trip across town tomorrow morning. oh well. can't get in on all the deals huh? maybe i'll stop by after work tomorrow evening anyway, just for kicks? why not right?

:-({|=

Being upset for being shot down is one thing. Taking it out on someone who's just doing thier job in unneccesary.

I still get a laugh over how they stopped calling them "American Heroes" right after 9/11 and changed it to "real men of genius"

There's always going to be people like that...always saying shit about others just like the ones who flamed the OP and said sorry afterwards. They don't research it first before saying shit....probably to boost up their posts count.

I wish I had gotten in on this deal, but good for those that got in.

You're implying he's a selfish asshole and do you even know him???
I'm not singling you out and I'm saying my opinion that I hate people who always says shit about others when they don't even know them....expecially in a forum. I understand that its probably the best place since there's no face-to-face interaction, but it seems like every time somebody posts a big deal like this, more and more people are liikely to flame than just not post at all. Even those other sites like Anandtech, bensbargains, and fatwallet are not as harsh as this site lately.

I would follow my advice but seeing that SteveGo is getting double-teamed, then I'm just offering to back him up.

Damn, I knew I should've checked CAG today. I would've gone and tried it out.

About this thread - man, I have to admit the OP got flamed by a lot of people. It always seems to happen though - on every forum, once one person starts questioning then there's a snowball effect and more and more people start to jump on the guy. Although I understand that the OP was new and all, but I don't think we need 20 people, who didn't try it out, to ridicule the post.

i think i can simply put what jsweeney is trying to say.

this IS NOT a sale, it is an error.
cc DOES NOT have to give you the games for $5, since they are not tagged $5.
if you get in on the deal, good for you, youre working the system in your favor
if you dont get in on it, please deal with it and SHUTTHEfuckUP!!! youre not entitled to get something because of an error, so get over it.

You're implying he's a selfish asshole and do you even know him???

Going only on the statement that he made, yes.
I believe it is fair game to believe one to be a selfish asshole if they bitch and moan about how a person who was just doing thier job screwed them over.

I'm not singling you out and I'm saying my opinion that I hate people who always says shit about others when they don't even know them....expecially in a forum.

You are right. I don't know him. He could be a great guy, feed the homeless, volunteer to help coach little league. He could be a stand-up great guy. Based on what he said, that's not the impression he gives.

I understand that its probably the best place since there's no face-to-face interaction, but it seems like every time somebody posts a big deal like this, more and more people are liikely to flame than just not post at all.

I'd tell him this to his face. It is a hugely selfish sounding thing he posted, and it does give him the appearence of being a selfish asshole.
With no other context to color the decision, it's going to be the one that stands.

Even those other sites like Anandtech, bensbargains, and fatwallet are not as harsh as this site lately.

That's because they are longer standing and thier populace has shaked itself out... CAG is still in search of it's soul. Until it finds it, it will be a very turbulant time.

I would follow my advice but seeing that SteveGo is getting double-teamed, then I'm just offering to back him up.

SteveGo brough this on himself, and then continued on with it.
Had he not answered, I'd have dropped the discussion, and noone else would have gotten involved.

I appreciate the support PrinceNeil but the other guy apologized and I probably did jump the gun calling the employee a punk, even though that seems kind of minor compared to some other choice words I could have used. My point is just that I probably would have let if slide and let someone get the deal as long as the glitch was still active, he didn't, sucks for me. I'll be more thoughtfull about my posts and try not to "attack" employees that do not hook me up in the future.

Again congrats to everyone that did get, $19.99 games will make pretty sweet stocking stuffers
