*DEAD* Circuit City mistake - 5 dollar games!! (YMMV)

I went to the Chapel Hill, OH CC today and the cashier told me the two games I had rung up for "2 for $30." I'm thinking it's dead, but it's possible it couild still be going on depending on who is checking you out.

I stopped out to the Valley Forge CC today with a co-worker who wanted to get some games and no dice, 2 for $30. So I just picked up the new Kirby GBA game (girlfriend/Christmas) and he grabbed the new LOTR DVD.

Last night however, on a whim I stopped there after work and the deal was still on. Picked up 12 games (no questions asked). So between myself, and my younger brothers Christmas is taken care of. ;)

It still bothers me that I tried twice and didn't get anything, especially since one other person says they got some from the very store I was in.
I still hold that this deal was more YLMV (your luck may vary) than YMMV. It wasn't store policy necessarily but really just drawing the "right" clerk.

I got in barely on Sun. night I had to "persuade" the clerk to leave it at $5 (got 8 games in two trips which was pushing it) and shot down (just trying to get 2 more) the next afternoon by another clerk who had would not allow the discount. Yet someone got some at $5 later that day at my store! Strange . .
YMMV means that the deal may or may not work for you due to any number of factors. I don't see how YLMV would mean anything different.
No, YMMV means you may have to drive to find an item . . . Target clearance is a good YMMV example. I may find VF4 for $5 at a Target but not at all of them.

YLMV is very different.

I'll give you one more example: I was able to use the Zelda WW 67% off raincheck to buy games (even though it didn't have a substitution policy on it) by luck. If I got a clerk who questioned it (I did on one occasion) I was dead . . . the manager kiss of death. It wasn't a "Mileage" issue but one of "Luck".

checked out 3 CC locations in Socal last night and got shot down all 3 times. No dice in Laguna Hills, Lakewood, and Buena Park. And all 3 times they didn't even have to re-adjust the price so obviously it was already corrected.
By the way I managed to score the following yesterday at a CC in North County St. Louis:

PS2:
Final Fantasy X-2
JakII

Xbox:
PGR2
Rallisport Challenge
Soul Calibre II
Need for Speed Underground
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2
Crimson Skies
Yet another St. Louis CAG. :D

Which one did you go to, Ferguson or St. Louis Mills?

My girlfriend lives in a suburb of StL.....Fenton, MO. It's in the southern area. She was able to get Kingdom Hearts for herself and Luigi's Mansion for her sister yesterday. If I would've known she was going I would've given her my list, damn! No soup for me, as two CC's I went to here (Kansas) denied the cause.

I have never heard of YLMV. Did you make that up just now? I always knew what YMMV actually meant but I have always took it as "you might get in on the deal or you might not." Like coupon deals, rebates, not just having to drive around....

Went to CC in Charlottesville, VA and the haul yesterday was:

Xbox:
LoTR Two Towers
LoTR RoTK
Soul Calibur 2
007: Agent under fire

GC:
Metroid Prime
Mario Sunshine
Zelda WW
Star Wars: Rebel Strike (RS 3)
F-Zero GX
Super Smash Brothers

All were $4.99 a pop except for the last two (@ $5.00 each after override because the second clerk couldn't get the deal to work and no one would help him). I went back today to see if anything was left, and picked up 007: EoN and Simpsons Hit and Run for $15 each. That was with the same clerk as the first 8 yesterday, so the deal looks dead here.

Now I just need to find myself an old GC with the progressive scan output. . .

YMMV is not a CAG exclusive term. It is a general term that basically means that "this will not work for everyone". It doesn't matter if it's an issue about a stupid/smart clerk, CC pricematching websites, BB not having it in stock or anything. It means that you may not be able to get in on this deal.

Am i the only one who thinks this debate is funny/silly?!?!

Today around 5:00 PM I was at CC looking. Some time later the nice lady (that was there last year around the holidays when games were $15.00) came around the corner and asked me if I'd found any deals. I asked her if the store was doing the $5 deal, which was really a glitch? She said how'd I know about that!?

I said the internet & cheapassgamer, much like I did last year. :) She said someone had came in earlier and did it.

Funny thing is, I was telling this other customer (who was a lady) about how she should price check the games.

The hottie that'd checked me out earlier said I couldn't do that no more. Why you ask? Because the woman that was behind me at the checkout counter earlier in the day had a hissy fit because hers rang up more than mine did. I'd have paid money to see that! :)

See, that's what you get for trying to be nice and help someone get a decent deal. Now I wish I'd kept my mouth shut and not went out so soon after buying the games.
The first rule of CAG is do not talk about CAG.
I hope you learned your lesson. :ziplip:

Also, the other poster above you who talked sass back to the cashier and mentioned CAG. I have a quick message for you:

Do not talk about CAG [-X

Now, onto my little story: After hearing about how an e-mail went out yesterday to the staff, I gave up hope on getting on on some CA deals, but since my subway stops right in front of CC in Rego Park, I thought I'd give it a go, especially since I needed a gift for my kids.

Went in, picked up a couple of games: Kirby's Air Ride, Rainbow Six 3, Crimson Skies and SoulCaliburII for the cube and then went to find the kiddies a nice DVD. Then comes the tricky part - finding the right cashier. Luckily right in the DVD section was a clearly overworked slightly dumb looking cashier. On top of that, there was a line, so that a)she would feel bad for making me wait longer if it didn't ring up "right" and b)if she said that she needed a manager, I could just play it cool by saying I didn't have any more time to wait after my wait in line (actually, this was true!). Then comes the setup chit-chat so she would feel more comfortable with me, sympathizing that she was the only cashier in such a busy section.

All that hard work paid off, and I walked out with my 4 games and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for $30.

My only regret is that I didn't have more time to grab a few more games after it worked for me.

A big thanks to the OP.
ok, What exactly is the policy about informing others of deals or CAG? I always thought the less people that know about CAG the better but maybe I'm in the minority on that.

I went into my local Circuit City Dearborn, Michigan and tried to buy some of the games on each system (PS2, GC, and XBOX). One of the sells associates tells me that the games are two for $10. I get up to the checkout line. The person in front of me buys like 8 games each $4.99. Then, when I get to the counter the management tells me that there is a story wide e-mail stating to void the $4.99 price to the original so they wouldn't let me buy any of the games I had for $4.99. The irony of this story is that I had about 10 games rung up at the $4.99 price each and the manager voided my sale just when I was about to hand the sales associate my cash.

One of the really ugly issues about CAG is that deals tend to leak over to FatWallet and they get ruined, because those creatures tend to hoard it, toss it onto Ebay and ruin it for us who just want a copy for our own.

If I find something, I tell my fellow CAGs. I don't tell anyone else. If I'm asked out at a B&M store about where I heard of this, I tell them "On the Internet". Not a lie, just not specific on where it came from.

Too many jackasses outside of here that want to ruin it to make a quick buck. The less leaks we have, the less chance of that happening.

The only reason we managed to get anything from this "sale" was that FatWallet found out 6 hours later than we did.
Anyone try the San Francisco CC?
If I can get off work at 1, I'm going to go try the S.F. CC but it'll probably take me another hour to post the results.

Did corporate fix the problem with the computers - or did they just tell all stores to adjust the prices manually. If it's the latter, there might still be a chance that it'll work given the right cashier. otherwise the "deal" is dead.

Poormojo were you able to pick up some games from this deal?

I have to agree with guessed on this one. YMMV and your term YLMV basically mean the same thing. YMMV means that you may get in on the deal, you may not, which is basically all luck. They are one in the same.

Yes, this did not warrant extended discussion.

I know that YMMV is used broadly . . . I was suggesting a refinement here but meant it rhetorically. Many of our deals do depend on miles driven . . . my point is that this deal (and some others) was more about your luck than anything else.

No one respond . . . YLMV will not enter into our lexicon and I do not care.

I was pretty ticked off that my "luck" ran out yesterday when I tried to get a few more games. But I'm happy that my "luck" allowed me to get in on Sunday night. But, my mileage had nothing to do with this deal :)

I'm as polite as they come, feel free to ask as many people around here that you like. I've never raised my voice in a retail store when trying to get something resolved, and pretty much fixed almost all the problems I've run into.

Fixing a glitch right as you walk up seems a little oddly timed, with how the people that work at CC have said how the pricing updates are done in their computer system.

Their wish to not admit they made such a huge mistake has been making their customer service a little less favorable to the customer, and they're still lightyears ahead of BB.

I was too busy to check this out the last couple of days.

For those that went, in general are the stores cleaned out? I'm wondering if word spread quickly enough for them to get wiped out or if they still have a pretty good stock and didn't get hit too hard.

I'll probably go to one the next couple of days just to check out what they look like.

Metroid, Mario, Zelda, FF etc. for 5 bucks. Wow!

Actually, after taking a peak at the FW forums, I noticed their thread on this deal isn't nearly as big as ours. 44000+ views for this one vs 27000+ on theirs. I think the problem of people hoarding games for resale on ebay for profit could be blamed on us just as easily as FW.

It's certainly possible, but I hope that since this is primarily a video game site, most people buy games to play rather then to make a few dollars.

Mario golf

She turned to me and said "....you're not having her (the girl at the reg) do anything ILLEGAL are you?" I simply told her no and turned away. I should've gutted the fucker. I wouldn't be so mad if I hadn't heard from a reliable source later that after the employees figured out what I was doing, THEY THEMSELVES did the same thing!!!!!

That's complete and absolute crap. If the guy in front of you had it, I mean, right in front of you, then you should've had it. I would have bitched up a storm for that crap. They should've voided that guy's sale and not let both of you get it. Such nice customer service.
Yes. Go bitch up a storm because they fixed a glitch right before you got there. If you're polite, sometimes you make friends.

I'd have to say shrike is as nice as they come too. He has been one of the best CAG's around here. He also picked me up a few games! :D
Thanks, Rig, I know I owe you a few free bumps for that. :D

In fact, the trip I made Monday evening was picking up items for fellow CAGs (five different ones, in fact), and it looks like I'lll have a few extras for people, once I get the rest of this all sorted out. Picked up a couple on that trip for me, though all ones to play and not to sell on eBay.

Screw Circuit City and the ho who handed me the games to put back after she wouldn't sell them to me.

And screw gravity for not letting them hit the ground faster after I dropped them.
And screw people like you who give educated consumers a bad name..
Amen, brother.
