Dead Rising 2 - Gen. Discussion & Info - Out now!
Pfft. I like both DR1 and DR2 but come on, this game is all types of average. This is a clear bait and switch game. Yes, 700 zombies on screen at once while having crazy weapons to kill with is fun and cool and doing it with a friend is even cooler but you can smell the shit they swept under the run a mile away.

The loading in this game is fucking embarrassing for a next gen system. I dont care about your 700 rendered zombies...I would much rather have you take it down to 300 so that maybe I can play for more than 5 min without three 20 second loading screens. This game loads cutscenes out of other cutscenes for christ sake.

No voice acting? Lazy...pure and simple. Having to smash B 50 times to get through conversation with a survivor while fending off the 15 or so undead around you...I am not even sure they want you to read what they wrote. This got a pass in DR1 because its the first of its kind but this is something that should be improved in a sequel.

Co-op....if you can even call it that seems to be not even close to fleshed out. How does making your partner reset back to the main screen and reconnect when you want to save make it past QA? Especially when they touted that has a main feature. The only reason why I got this game now was because of co-op if it didnt have it I wouldnt have even thought about until it was 20 or so bucks.

Etc etc etc. There are a lot of things wrong with the game BUT is it still fun to play with your mates? Yes. But I could never call it anything but a very close to being subpar, average game.

(Strictly opinion on the story) Anything other than the main story line cut scenes are god awful. I know they are going for that over the top campy feel but it came across much better in DR1..now it just feels like they couldnt come up with anything.

This game reminds me a lot of Crackdown 2. But this is and the game trailer review are sums it up best. http://pc.gamezone.com/reviews/item/dead_rising_2/
Do you have the game installed? I haven't had a loading screen take 20 seconds. Only times I even notice the loading is when I forget to wait for a survivor to be close enough then have to go right back and get them.

Most NPCs have about 3 lines of dialog. That's 3 button presses, not 50. I guess I'm used to playing games with loading times and skipping dialog as I just turn on the subtitles since I read fast because I haven't had a problem with this.

Not sure what you're talking about with the story. They've given Chuck far more personal reasons than Frank had to figure out what was going on. If anything it's less campy because it doesn't go full on south-american-terrorists-with-zombie-bees crazy.

Personally I wanted more Dead Rising and was worried the developer switch would mean that they would try and change the unique formula dramatically. They didn't, it's more Dead Rising only with great combo weapons, survivors that don't need to be watched every step, and some new cool thing hidden around every corner.

They need to fix the Co-op stuff for sure though.

I didn't think about installing the game to try and reduce the loading screen time.. I guess I will try that.
I didn't think about installing the game to try and reduce the loading screen time.. I guess I will try that.
Couldn't hurt. I don't know if it makes a difference, I just installed it right away.

Not that I want to go back and forth because to each his own but yes the Co-op was highly touted. The install seems to be a matter of pure opinion because 50% say it doesnt help at all while the other 50% swear to god it helps. (It doesnt) Although you do have to take into account people who cant install it. You cant just say, well I can install so anyone else can fuck off.

The NPCs having 3 lines of dialogue is false, clearly 50 is a exaggeration but you seem to be beaten with the "give them a pass," stick. It matters not what whether you are good at reading subtitles (most of my extended family is deaf so trust me, my subtitle reading skills are to the max) but just because I am good at reading subtitles doesnt mean that its not broken. Again, you can just say....I can read fast so everyone else can fuck off.

The opinion on story like I stated before its a matter of pure opinion although I said everything other than the main story line. No use even debating that, I accept that you like....accept that I hate it.

Co-op is broken. Nothing else needs to be said.

Dzauk and I played for a good 6 hours last night and I never got booted once when he saved. Maybe it depends on the connection, not sure really. As for the loading screen, I have mine installed and it doesn't take that long at all. For a $60 game, I have definitely gotten my moneys worth out of it.

I wasn't, I was just saying I hadn't noticed the issue personally, but that I had the game installed.

I'd say 3 is a rough average, but 50 would be a gross exaggeration. I also wasn't saying anyone who can't read fast can fuck off, just was saying that I'm used to skipping through dialog so it doesn't bother me.

The opinion on story like I stated before its a matter of pure opinion although I said everything other than the main story line. No use even debating that, I accept that you like....accept that I hate it.

Nothing against that, you seem to have taken what I said as much harsher than I meant. If so, my bad. You're certainly entitled to feel that it's a subpar game. As I said that I got exactly what I wanted from it and I'm happy with the end result. Can't change your mind on if you are disappointed with it and I'm not trying to. Just was giving my opinion and reasons why I disagreed and wasn't meant as an attack on your opinion.

Co-op is broken. Nothing else needs to be said.

Ditto.

The only time survivor dialog really annoyed me was when the survivor I needed to talk to was under attack by a couple dozen zombies. They won't talk to you unless the zombies are down, but they also won't get out of the way and let you kill them with reckless abandon. Oh, and that one survivor who was slow-moving, but refused any physical contact (offer shoulder, carrying, etc), he can bite me. Every playthrough I've done since I just killed him. So satisfying.

Will it at least be a separate deal like Case 0? And if I didn't play case 0 is it worth going back and checking that out? I mean...I have it for PC so I know I wont be carrying anything over.

Not really. You get to fight another psychopath and save a handfull of survivors in an area that's about as big as two of the hallways in one of the malls of the main game. If that sounds like it's worth $5 to you go for it, the achievements are pretty easy.

Now this interests me because it seems to be a really well known problem. Every review I have seen and message board speaks clearly that this is a huge problem.

Saw on Xbox360achievements that the preorder DLC is coming every Tuesday in October... one a week for four weeks, each costs 160 points. Starts with the Ninja costume.

I haven't had problems playing co-op with several different friends either.

Huh, I wonder if something weird with the connection settings? All I know is I've run into the same problem as Soodmeg, not only that but reconnecting after the boot has given me an "Unable to Establish Connection Error".

Wheelchair.

Tried the wheelchair...other survivors and/or zombies kept getting in it. I got so fed up that the wheelchair is what I used to bludgeon him to death with.

'Sides, the absolute best way to handle him is the Leadership magazine. Makes any slow-moving survivor a normal one....as long as they can walk in the first place.

Glad I sold mine the second I got it!

Pardon me if these questions have already been asked, I've avoided this thread to keep spoilers away.

Has anyone had issues with being alerted to side missions? Half the time I'm running across survivors without ever getting the walkie-talkie call and seeing it on my mission list. I know you can't be in the same area, but I took a look back at my guide (only after finishing parts of the game) and would see side mission calls I'm supposed to get and never do.

The most frustrating one
was giving the infected survivor his Zombrex shot. I was playing strip poker (which takes WAY too long) and he turned. Sullivan capped his ass in a cutscene and I'm down a survivor. It would have been nice to have been notified I needed to give him another shot.

I'm getting some side missions too early and some not at all. It's quite frustrating, and it's taking away from the experience. On a side note, if I finish this game with X survivors or killed X zombies are there any bonuses like in the first game? I've unlocked some costumes, but nothing that affects gameplay like a super weapon.

Where you playing poker in the Safe House or versus the three poker players in the Atlantica's High Roller room? If it was the former, you never receive any calls in the safe room, if it was the latter, you probably should've received it.

For the missions, if you're not receiving some, you either have too many survivors around Fortune City (there can only be 8 rescue-able survivors), or you were in the Zone the missions takes place in when you were supposed to receive the call. Or, for some survivors, they just don't have any missions associated with them at all. It's hard to say. Regardless of if you get the call or not though, if you show up to where the mission was supposed to take place, and have past at least one loading screen from when you were supposed to get it, you can still rescue the survivors/kill the psychos (again, as long as there aren't more than 8 survivors).

Currently, I don't know of any weapons you can unlock via achievements or whatnot. There's a bunch of outfits you can unlock, but that's it.

Thank you for the response Salamando. I was in the Safe House at the time, with honestly no idea how long in game time had passed. I would expect to have gotten some decent lead time on notification, but I'll experiment with it later tonight. It doesn't look like playing the strip poker game is very important.

When it comes to the number of survivors active, well....that's kinda my point. I'm running around at the time of my most recent save with no active quests. Case 5-1 is at 7 or 8pm, which is a full gray time bar away. Katey had her Zombrex. Nothing else active.

Here are some I've run across with no prompting
The first woman at the dark roast and her husband
The man with the briefcase out on the Silver Strip by what I believe was the Slot Ranch Casino
The three women shopping on the second floor above the safe house

Did you run into the same thing with these? It seems like I get alerted for some and not others. I don't hang around any sections, but it's impossible to say where I was at an exact time frame. Anyone have an idea if there's a time window for calls, i.e. between 7 and 8am?

The ones you've listed are "hidden" survivors and the game will never notify you of them being there. Likewise, there is a "hidden" psychopath the game never tells you about.

There is well over 50 survivors in the game so it is possible to miss a few and still get the achievement if that's what you're going for.

Judging by your list and the fact you are on case 5-1, I already know 4 other survivors you missed because the game doesn't tell you about them
the Tape it or Die crew in the Kokonutz basement
.

The strip poker game is important to get Arthur's helmet off the fat guy.. when you assemble Arthur's armor + beard, you become invincible.

Yeah, there are some survivors that just don't have any missions associated with them whatsoever. You'll never get a call, and you just have to be at the right place at the right time.

In addition to the three groups you know about, here are the others
Ted, Snowflake, Lenny. Can be found in the Yucatan Casino right at the start of the game.
You kill Ted, feed Snowflake some steaks, and then find Lenny in the casino's office (on the southern wall)

Nevada, Jessica, Jacob - Appears in the Atlantica Casino's high-roller room at 1:00AM on Day 3 (or, a few hours after you get the Mail Order Zombrex mission). Need to defeat them in poker. 100,000 buy in, but you get 1 million if you win.

Tape It or Die crew - Right after you give Katie zombrex on Day 3, head to Kokonutz Sports Town in Palisades. Open the door in the back. Bring a Cement Saw and Plates. You won't be able to rescue them now, but will receive a mission when you're able to.

Michael, Matthew - After a major event on Day 4, you'll find them near the savepoint/maitenance room grotto thing in the middle of Fortune Park

I just ended up killing the high rollers. Playing poker takes too long, you don't get anything for bringing them back to the safe house (money is easy to come by, no loss there) and 3 people bumping up into the survivor cap could have problems with
Tape it or Die, since you need 4 slots available for them to spawn and the combo cards you get from them are a lot better than money.
.

Well, you still need to talk to them if you're going for the Data Miner achievement. Besides, you end up with a lot of missions in that general area anyway during that time. If you get to them at 1:00, you have more than enough time to beat them in Poker, round up all other nearby survivors, and get them back to the safehouse well before 7:00. Plus, you should be able to get the 8 people following you at once achievement.
Does anyone know if there's a reward for completing a perfect game (all survivors and sociopaths)?
Reward as Avatar reward or achievement reward? I don't think this game has any rewards at all, but maybe it's because I'm in the Dash preview?

Just won.. fun game, especially if you liked Dead Rising 1. Starting a second playthrough now to do achievements.

Saw my counts at the end.. total survivors rescued: 49 :bomb:

Ugh. If Amazon can't handle their pre-order bonuses any better than they are with DR2, I'll stick with Best Buy from now on.

I've contacted them five or six times already, trying to find out why I haven't been emailed the code for the Avatar items. Three of those times were just me trying to make them realize I wasn't talking about the $10 promotional credit.

They said I'd get the code by Oct. 5th, but no go. I'm currently trying to explain (again) that I KNOW the $10 credit was dropped into my account... I JUST WANT MY AVATAR ITEMS.

Here's a good guide if you're going after survivors/filling up the notebook...

http://www.xbox360achievements.org/forum/showthread.php?t=261447

Anyway, still have a few achievements within my grasp but I wouldn't be surprised if the game falls by the wayside now just like Reach did when DR2 came out. :D Loved my time with the game. If I am still enjoying myself on the 3rd playthrough solely for achievements, then a game has done something right. I am a little peeved though that I could never even find a multiplayer match. I would have at least liked to TRY for those achievements.

Couldn't find a multiplayer match? I've had no issues there, though I have had problems where if on person quits it dumps everyone out of the match. When searching TK starts talking and then points to the camera saying "TK baby!" at that point or shortly after I've found that if it doesn't says Match Found! then it's going to put you in a lobby waiting forever. I just back out and start again if it hasn't found a match by that point in his speech.

I have 2 of the 3 online achievements, but that last one is a pain. I wish there was a way to track which events you have won. I know I've won Slycicles, Stand Up Zombedy, Ball Buster, and Master Shafter but I can't remember about the others.

Just make sure you choose ranked and give it a minute. If a game is found and you press A to join, but it's empty, just back out right away and retry finding a ranked match. Most the time I found a game with a free slot for me to take on my second try.

There doesn't seem to be a point to playing non-ranked matches and the ranked ones your points can be transferred over to money in one of your save slots.

Are you supposed to get some kind of upgrade every time you level up? When I got to level 10, I didn't get any kind of upgrade, combo card, new move, or anything. Other than that, I've always gotten something after leveling up. It seemed like some kind of glitch or bug or something but I was just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience.

Ok, I'll try it that way and hope for better luck. It would always put me into a room by myself, I'd wait a minute or so and nobody would show so I got impatient...lol. That video gets really old by the way. Probably not the best idea.

You should get at least a point to your attributes every level. I know I had one situation where it didn't tell me what I got but I ended up with everything at level 50 so it's probably not glitched.

Anyway, got all of the achievements except for the 2 Zombie Genocides, the online and the co-op ones. Reviving someone is easy enough but playing through the whole game in co-op with the issues is going to be a pain. Probably just move on to other games and come back if I ever get bored. :D

That video every time reminds me of Resident Evil 5 versus matches. Having to listen to that freaking helicopter pilot for 10 seconds before every match... *rage*

TIR is garbage. Good luck even findin a match.

For anyone who preordered from Amazon. I got a $10 credit today because they dont have the avatar outfits yet.

You probably did something that cancelled the level up HUD. Either that or there was a bug in the game and you lost out of some level up goodness...

Yeah, that gets old fast. I just mute my TV while I'm searching for a game.

As for the person who said TIR is garbage, I've enjoyed it. The commentary is sometimes funny and it's a quick way to earn $60-70k in about 15 minutes. Certainly not something I plan on playing a lot of though.

Managed to get a few games and one achievement in right after my last post. Some events I played were fun (Zomboni and Slicecycles) but others (Headache, Ramsterball and Pound of Flesh) were kind of a chore.

I stopped playing TIR when I was playing Rmsterball and I "lost the power" when nobody was anywhere near me. I'll pass on frustrating lag.

Sweet, I received the Amazon credit as well! Woohoo! Black Ops for $19.99!!

TIR is alright, but I think it lets most people down if they were thinking 4-player multi meant 4-player regular game madness, which would have been great. 2 is okay, but I am so stuck on the two chicks, even with a friend.

I thought Headache was one of the better games. You get more points for multiple zombies, so it's good to have like 6-7 zombies wearing the hats before you pop their heads.

Ramsterball is annoying. Get used to that one though, it pops up a ton for whatever reason.

Yeah... I told you guys Ramsterball always lags. I honestly agree TIR doesn't have any sort of staying power what so ever as a multiplayer experience. It's only good for some quick cash if you happen to be patient/lucky enough to find a match worth playing. I used it for Zombrex money in my initial play-through as I was too lazy to search every nook and cranny in the game for it.

Truth. Also, the best way to make money is to gather up all three of the gambling books that are scattered about and go to town on that giant slot machine in the Slot Ranch Casino. I made millions in a short while.

Finished the game yesterday, going to decompress my thoughts in the spoiler section below. May as well run through the TIR stuff first.

It took at least 5 tries before I even found a game. In three games played I came across a same opponent once already. In another month you'd be lucky to find any matches at all. Luckily I've snagged first place in one event (headache) and won an episode. I don't know how I'll ever finish the rest, but I'm going to try.

OK, game spoilers start:
First and foremost, the ending. Even less of an ending than the first Dead Rising. At least there, they had a text epilogue that said Frank escaped and broke the story. All we got was the repeat overtime boss death (although lucky TK probably died from the fall as opposed to eaten) and "we're going home". Yeah Capcom, you sure did give us the complete ending without needing to buy Case West's epilogue.

It really didn't feel like it connected to the first game story-wise. Assumptions can be made, but you really could have thrown any name on this game. And mind you, this game has to be marketed to the regular fans as well as the semi-obsessive ones who will research theories online and probably try to make me look a fool.

So, we're 5 years past Willamette and 3 years past Case Zero. How many zombie outbreaks have occurred? If we believe Carlito's plan (which made sense in that horror movie suspension of disbelief way) then 50 orphans around the country started outbreaks of what must be varying sizes. Enough to throw the general populace into panic and destabilize civilization? One would think so. I did the aforementioned semi-obsessive thing and looked up the epilogue from DR1, where they said the plan was never confirmed and the American populace let it fade from their minds.

We know Vegas happened and DR2 put us in the Fortune City outbreak. Chuck blames Sullivan and the drug company for Vegas, which Sullivan doesn't directly deny but says they are responsible for more than Fortune City. Why? So they can get enough Queens to make Zombrex for some of the most powerful and important people to have cause they are infected. OK, so when did that happen? There couldn't be enough of those people infected during Willamette, or even Vegas. So there would have to be more. For them to have enough zombies to run TIR 17, they must have gathered a supply from somewhere.

Of course, Chuck discovers all this and no mention is made during the epilogue. He found a laptop which Sullivan stole, but they never made it clear if it was recovered. Did it fly off with part of his body? Was there enough equipment in the maintenance tunnels to implicate them?

In any case, the outbreaks have to start somehow. I think perhaps I'm thinking about it too much, but c'mon Capcom....at least give me something to hang my suspension of disbelief on. I'm already buying that a man from a Central American country somehow started an infected (let's say with a Queen); convinced his incredibly young and beautiful medical scientist sister to create the first zombrex; and set up a NPO (what?!) to place orphans who have been given a single dosage of Zombrex (which used to only last 12 hours) to start a zombie apocalypse.

So yeah, if we want to know about what Frank and hopefully Isabella has been doing for the past 5 years to cure and stop this, we're buying Case West at least. I had hoped Chuck would have uncovered more secrets than the obvious "who has the most to gain from the zombie outbreaks is causing them" twist. I know this sounds like a lot of bitching or running down the game but I'm a fan of the series and just hoped it would do more with the story than it did.

On the plus side, I'm also one of the lucky "pre-ordered at $48, and have received $30 in promotional credits so far" category. Thank you Amazon.

S ending question:
Is there anything after the end credits after the 'real' S ending? My screen just stayed black with blood spots until I hit a button.
