Dead Space 2 -- Discussion

Has anyone read the books? I hear that there is "one" good book but I am not sure which one was being referred to?

Dead Space: Martyr - B.K. Evenson
Dead Space: Salvage - Antony Johnston
Dead Space - Antony Johnston

I want to read them, I'll probably see if my local library has them at some point.

On another note, does anyone actually play multiplayer?

So I'm going through on easy now on a New game + haha unbelievable how simple and fast I'm going through. Question .. next playthrough will be hardcore.. for those who have done it or attempted.. Do you still have your elite suit in inventory when starting a new game that you won for beating Zealot? or do you have nothing. And have to get all schematics and everything

Pleeeenty of people play multiplayer.. its fun but you have some who are psychotic and were level 50 by the 3rd day which they have a lot more abilities unlocked and if you're a level 5 makes it a lil hard haha

I think I will eventually. I have to admit to being a bit of an achievement whore, and I think the lack of MP achievements is one of the reasons I have not delved into it yet. I have heard great things, though, and I am definitely a huge fan of games with MP portions that bring something different to the table. I'm tired of warfare shooters.

It's a fresh game, so you have to get everything. I got up to like Chapter 6 and had to save, because I was going out and didn't want to lose my progress. I then started up again and got pretty far into disc 2 without saving, figuring I would use the disc change "checkpoint" to my advantage, but I got so far and then died due to my complete stupidity. I just got so frustrated I shut the machine off lol. I don't think I will be going back anytime soon.

A fun side note for replay-folks... there are a ton of awesome and unique deaths in this game. Every enemy seems to have their own kill animation that can sometimes go on for 10-20 seconds... if you are willing, almost go for them, they are really well done. Shows how much these guys liked making this game.

Oh yeah, you can definitely tell they enjoy making the Dead Space games and crafting an interesting universe. The logs in both games are great, and I always make sure to stop to read/listen to all of them, which is definitely not something I do for every game.

Hey all, I have a question. I locked in the TIV for DS2 for $40 on amazon(i got it for $10, and I got the DA2 armor code and the DS2 network code). What are the chances itll reach the $10-20 range in the next few months?(using DS as a comparison). I guess I want to know if I should hold on to it and play it when I feel like it and have a chance and keep it in my collection or let it go and hope itll come back to me in the future.

Anyone else wish they remade the original Dead Space with talking Isaac, 360* gravity, and air-lock windows?

Level 1 rig suit forever.

The gravity sections in this game are 49598x times than in the last game.

On a side note, if you're doing zealot on your second playthrough, it gets insanely easy near the end of the game. If you worked on maxing out the nodes on your weapons (for the 4 fully upgraded acheevo), sell them back for $40-90k each. I just finished Zealot last night and ended up with more money, ammo, and health packs than i could ever use.

Going to try and attempt Hardcore sometime soon...

I'm about halfway through (guessing based on the fact I'm on Chapter 7 and there are 15 Chapters) and I'm loving it. Loved the first game too and this is just a bigger, badder version of it. Glad they did away with the train level switching thing too. And the fire in this game is freaking unbelievable.

Couple questions though:

1. Are the later chapters longer? If not then this is a pretty short one on Normal. I'm about 3 hours in and almost done with Chapter 7.

2. I've fully upgraded my Plasma Cutter--what should I sink credits and nodes into next?

1. I was somewhere between 11-13 hours on Survivalist. One of the later chapters... 12 or 13 maybe? is really short. Rest felt just fine.

2. Stasis/Rig

Alright, tonight after work I'm making another run at Hardcore. I tried on Monday, made it to chapter four, and died the cheapest death ever after a necro killed me by simply dropping on top of me. I'm going to try to make it to the disc break at chpt 7 without saving, but might end up saving around chapter five. I WILL BEAT YOU, Dead Space 2.

Has there been any official word on if one Dragon Age 2 armor code will unlock the armor for all consoles? From what I have been able to find on the bioware forums, it doesn't look like anyone knows for sure. I ordered the PS3 version today from Amazon, to get Extraction with it as well, but I will be playing Dragon Age 2 on 360. In any case, if anyone would like to trade their 360 armor code for my PS3 armor code please let me know.

I redeemed my code yesterday and can officially say it only unlocks for the platform you bought Dead Space 2 on.

I really thought the mining truck part (in Ch 11/12) was going to piss me off, but it had really weird checkpoints that got me through. At one point I had a checkpoint where I spawned with my back to a throw up necromorph and would always get hit by him.

Anyone else playing the iphone Dead Space? Something went wrong and now I can't turn on any sound in the game. But other games have sound...? Checked the options settings and everything should be working...?

Hahaha that was awesome. When I played through that part in the game, I jumped because I knew something was going to happen when she picked that thing up. Hilarious.

Also, I managed to get to chapter 6 of Hardcore last night! And I wiped out my next-to last two cheevos...I'm at 950 gs...Hardcore is kicking my ass though.

I never played Dead space, would I be missing much jumping straight into this? Or should I run out and buy Dead Space 1 first, then get into this.

If so how long was Dead space 1? like 15-20 Hours?

I'd buy the first Dead Space before you go playing DS2. DS is a great game and IMO has a much better atmosphere

I disagree with this, I think that DS2 surpasses the original in almost every way...

Nonetheless, DS2 does include a short video recapping the events of DS1 for those who have never played DS1, so you don't need to play the original if you're looking to catch up on story.

Dead Space 1 was a lot of fun but DS 2 has a good video recap.

In this case I think playing Dead Space would make Dead Space 2 even better. The real narrative tension and storyline of 2 really builds off of the first game. It wouldn't be nearly as interesting without that knowledge. The recap covers the story but can't replace the feeling of experiencing it instead. So if that is something that interests you then take the time to play it. Also, the first Dead Space is a really great game anyways so it isn't a waste of time.

You can definitely enjoy DS2 without having played DS, but I would still play it. I think it makes you appreciate the sequel a lot more, especially one section that I won't spoil now, but everyone who played it knows what I'm talking about.

Actually, ^this is great advice...DS1 is still a great game, and you can find it easily for 10 bucks.
How many hours would I be putting into DS1. I'm just wondering if it a 20 hour game or a 40ish.
Same as 2. Around 10 unless you are a completionist.

Then multiple play-throughs are necessary. Depending on what difficulty you play on, you will not be able to get certain achievements together. The max equipment/weapons achievements, for example, are best done on/around normal because you simply would not be able to spread your resources so thinly and still succeed on the upper end difficulties.

If you think you'll like DS2, you will like DS1. It's dirt cheap these days, just go get a copy. Or don't. But I don't get why some people decide to jump into the middle of a series when all the previous games aren't drastically different, and would only improve experiences with later entries into the series.

Game was amazing. Just beat it and I'm not sure how I beat the final boss. I really pulled that out of my ass.
Saw blade and pulse rifle to get Nicole the first time. Contact beam twice to kill marker. Shoot the rest of my rifle rounds at Nicole then spam my 15 plasma cutter rounds at her. Two contact beam shots at marker. Reload contact beam. Alt fire contact beam and one contact beam to get Nicole and then 2 contact beam shots to get the marker a final time. I had 15 pc rounds, 12 pulse rifle rounds, 9 contact beam and 6 saw blades. My pulse rifle and plasma cutter were my highest upgraded weapons and I had no health packs.

You won't understand the ending if you don't play the first game, or at least watch the ending of the first game but that's no fun.

Agreed! I assume you're talking about
when Isaac looks a Ellie and sighs?
Oh, that gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. I feel sorry for the people who haven't played the first.

Just wrapped up my zealot playthrough... Holy crap the last 3 chapters are intense. The rest is very manageable. The hardest part of the game was surprisingly not
the gauntlet or final boss but the three story room at the end of chapter 13 where you are just flooded with necromorphs. I lost nearly all my ammo, health, and stasis refills fighting in those tight spaces.

And thanx CAG for the recommendation on the contact beam max upgrade, I don't think I could have beaten the game on zealot without it.

Finally, this game is still crazy awesome. I'll be going through again because it really does change the game strategy to have different weapons so replay value is actually higher than I thought.

Is that the room with
the red emergency lighting and the Brute battle on the bottom floor? I just ran to the door on the second floor, not bothering to fight except the ones that kept blocking the door from closing behind me. I wonder if that could work for all the floors up to the Brute?

I'm through 6 or 7 chapters right now and this game certainly is not a letdown. Actually improves on the first one.

Do the last 7-8 chapters take much longer? I feel like I've breezed through the first 6 really fast. (and i'm not one of those speed run people.)

Also, for those who played this, did you watch Dead Space Aftermath? It's kinda interesting know what you know after watching that movie.
Also, for those who played this, did you watch Dead Space Aftermath? It's kinda interesting know what you know after watching that movie.
Aftermath was horrible. There's a main arc that's done in CGI, only it's mid 90s CGI. Think like an episode of Reboot. Aftermath just looks awful, on top of no redeeming story or dialog.

Then each of 4 characters tell what happened to their group. Same basic story, 4 different perspectives each done in a different art style. One is similar to the style of Downfall, but the other 3 are what I considered especially bad anime-style renditions.

It was just not good at all. Main thing is you get a little 'insight' into Strauss' back story. It's definitely nothing important to the DS2 story, or if you ask me, the greater DS universe.

Yeah, thats exactly what I am talking about. And I did the same thing
on the second floor because I literally had maybe 9 pulse rifle rounds and 1 line gun rounds. But I don't think you can get to the door quick enough on the first level and that's where the big fight really is. The space is so confined that I kept getting trapped between all the necros and a lot of things can blow up.

My normal play through was about 10 hours, zealot about 8.5 hours to gauge. But some of the second half is longer, some shorter. 10, 11, and 13 are quite long. But everything is so intense that every minute feels long. I was thinking about how it compares to other games and the difference is that there is rarely a wasted moment, it is very "thick." Not much traversal time, backtracking and stuff like that to inflate the playtime.

I ended right around 10 hours and I was thinking the same thing. The first 6 chapters took around 4-5 hours. There are 14 chapters so don't worry.

ok good. I figured i wasn't doing it too fast or anything. (That's what she said.)

As for Aftermath - yes, I was mainly referring to Strauss backstory. I enjoyed that part.

Wow I just got to the part where

Isaac gets back on the Ishimura. So awesome to revisit the first part of DS1 all covered up again.

Great part. It's the part I was talking about earlier as the reason why people should play the first game. You can appreciate that section a lot more.

Some highlights from those chapters:

1)
When you're on the tram talking to Ellie about not having to go through the Ishimura's medical deck, and the computer comes on and says "Obstruction detected. Rerouting. Welcome to the medical deck." Isaac's only response is "crap."
Cheesy, but I lol'd.
and 2)
The blacklighting on all of the walls that paints the blood white. At first I didn't realize what the splotches were, but then I remembered my time from the first game and thought that was a really nice touch.

I know it's too much work for so little detail but...

if the game save from the first game remembered where your blood stains were from your first time through, that would be so fucking epic. (Even if you don't.)

The one part I don't like is that there are now new things in the lockers. There shouldn't be anything in the lockers because you've already removed them in the first game. They shouldve figured out another way to give you crap.

Of course, that's nitpicky. I love this game.

Also, the flashbacks of the wall tentacle was a great touch. It gave me flashbacks.

Visceral Games has blown me away. It's hard to imagine any title slated for this year realistically competing with Dead Space 2 on so many different levels for me. Hands down it truly is one of the best sequels if not THE best sequel I've ever played. This is exactly how you're supposed to approach a god damn sequel. Perfect game is perfect and has restored a noteworthy chunk of faith I lost in the industry.
