Dead Space 2 PS3 Discussion - Out Now!

Yeah, that section in Chapter 4 wrecked me.

I'm in Chapter 10,
where you go back in the Ishimura. WTF! Why is this ship here? Why would Isaac go back in? Just seeing it gave me chills and the entire time I've been wandering around it I've been surprisingly, physically uncomfortable. I wasn't expecting such an emotional, tense response from this game but the plastic they have up all over it gives it such an eerie vibe.
Am I the only one who had such a strong reaction to this?

Yeah, that part was a mess. Took a bunch of tries to get the timing just right.

The trophy gave me a nice chuckle once it popped up, though.

Just finished the part where you are in the church and the door breaks. You have to kill the 4-5 monster pack that is working as a team. Those guys were rough. It took me a few tries, to realize they wanted me to shoot them with stasus when they popped their heads out and NOT after they started running at me.. Loved the trophy name.
[/QUOTE]

While they're still in the distance, take out the legs first with your plasma cutter in the horizontal position. This slows them down considerably. While they're crawling on the floor, shoot their limbs off with your plasma cutter in the vertical position. No need for stasis using this method.

edit: just remembered these suckers don't have arms lol. Either case, shooting the legs right away slows all two-legged creatures immensely.

Still have yet to try ANY of it... yarg. Hard for me to focus on multiple SP campaigns at once... beat ACII so now THIS. Finally. I'd be game for some MP at some point.

Done! I don't think there's any real spoilers here, but just to be safe:

The game was really fun to play, but I gotta say I was a bit disappointed with the story. I thought watching the Sprawl being overrun would be a sorta tent pole to the story but outside of the first hour or so there aren't really any more civilians running around. By the second half of the game you're being sent to all sorts of isolated places that could have easily just been another section of the Ishimura, which in my opinion didn't really take advantage of the fact that that you're on this giant floating city.

The plot was a bit too tight-lipped as well... they did the old Lost routine of the straight man demanding answers and everyone else being either too mysterious, crazy or soon-to-be-dead to give a response. I think there should have been more on the marker than what we got.

mp is ok its not a reason to get the game or anything but its a nice extra to have acccess to. necromorphs are tanks though and fun to play as.

I'm on Chapter 7, and so far it's my favorite...
  • The elevator launch (that's 7 right?)
  • The Dead guy leaning against the door with half his skull- then the little monster jumps out.
  • and the disturbingly funny security door puzzle.

For those of us who will probably never finish hardcore mode, here's the reward for completing it.

I'm on Chapter 13 now and I'm not liking it that much. It's monster-closet city. I prefer the earlier chapters where you weren't sure if there were going to bad guys or not when you walked into a room. The mood was different not knowing what to expect. Seems like now you can guarantee each room is going to be filled with 'em.

I think it was chapter 10 or so when you went to
the Ishimura
. That shit was tense!

That's freakin' hysterical. BANG! B-BANG!

Not really a spoiler for those who haven't reached chapter 13, but just in case:
I thought this was actually genius... really adds to the hopelessness and despair of the situation. Especially if you stocked up on health and ammo like you've been playing the earlier part of the game only to realize 'shit, I don't think I have enough _____ for this.' Most smart players know to conserve their resources, but the last couple of chapters really force you to use them up and truly live up to that horror/survival genre. I don't know about you, but many times during the last few chapters I kept on thinking to myself 'fuck fuck fuck, I'm running out of ammo/health and I don't know how much longer I'm gonna last.'

Thanks for that Youtube link, that's hilarious :applause:

I'm on Chapter 11 and I've already had that experience, wondering if I'm going to run out and having to be clever about how I go about each room. Stores are fewer and further between in this game, and I've been so conservative with my cash that I was low on ammo for most of my weapons.

That, and I'm used to getting 6 shots per pick-up for the Plasma Cutter. Maybe this is only on Veteran (compared to Normal) but only getting 3-4 shots each drop is much harder.

I think the game has been set up pretty well in this respect. I Did the last half of Chapter 6 with 1 notch of health and no inventory to fix it because i couldn't find any. It turned a pretty unassuming section of the game into a pretty daunting task. One I was out I was showered with health kits.

I'm playing through the game in a pretty uncharacteristic way though. My friends and I split the DLC, so I'm playing with those suits and weapons and spending all of my money on nodes.

Question about the game:
In the first game, you were only given ammo for the weapons you purchased. I keep finding all sorts of ammo for weapons I don't care about. Is that because of the DLC adding all the weapons, or is that just the way the game works?

I don't have any of the DLC packs and I keep finding ammo for weapons I'm not carrying.

Once I found the schematics for a weapon and it's available in the store I started finding ammo drops for it.

Ok- I thought I may have screwed myself up. I find a lot of pulse rifle ammo and I've never equipped it. I also find some sort of detonating mines (is that for the line gun?).

I only use the plasma cutter, line gun, and force gun. My 4th right now is the rivet gun. It's ok, but it's a little too unpredictable for my taste. It's pretty good at picking off enemies that don't need to be dismembered though, like the little kids.

Yeah, it's all Schematics. I played through DS1 with JUST the Plasma Cutter and got a ton of ammo for every other weapon. I just sold it all so it was like getting cash from everything, or ammo I could actually use. No big deal really, although when your inventory is limited it can be annoying.

The mines are for the Detonator. Honestly I can't imagine playing without that weapon, especially against Stalkers. The Javelin Gun has proven to be my favorite, though, especially once you get the exploding special secondary function. Kill almost anything in 2 hits!

Anyone else having any problems with the doors not opening? I died and the game got stuck on the loading screen. I restarted from saved file(somewhere in Chapter 7) and tried to open a door but it just kept cycling. Tried starting a new game and it did the same thing. The whole game didnt freeze because I could still walk around. Any advice?

they do open slow in some spots and ive encountered one glitch where i was walking through a wall into open space. games wicked fun though still not doing as well as id like to with ammo conservation but i havent bought any either. need to get more comfortable with using the tk weapo.

Just finished it, overall I loved it and will probably play through it again on Zealot (doubt I'll attempt Hardcore mode, though).

A few things...

The Marker is apparently man-made? Isaac helped build the new, gigantic one? My impression from the first game was that it was just some ancient alien artifact that the Unitologists mistook as some holy relic for their cult.

What happened at the end? What caused the Marker to be blow up? I thought we'd find out more about what Tieddman was up to but they never really went into it.

The last moment when he's on the ship, though, just like the end of the first game. Pans over to the passenger seat, half-expecting to see Nicole AGAIN, but no it's Ellie, and she just says, "What?" Perfect, hilarious ending. I love it.

I thought the game was saying that you were able to rebuild the marker because you had been exposed to it. I thought it was something to do with how your mind or genetic material was altered by it that gave you the "blue prints". I haven't finished it though, so i may be wrong (I'm a sucker for spoiler tags.. :( )

Forgot to mention... that part in Chapter 14 made me feel like I was going to vomit. If you haven't gotten there yet, you'll know what I'm referring to by the time it's over.

This surprisingly long article details the backstory of the Marker from before the first game. I didn't realize they'd created such an elaborate mythos. No real spoilers here until it gets into what's happening in Dead Space 2, and even then it's vague:

http://deadspace.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Marker

But an interesting read if you nerd out on this kind of stuff like I do.

I do nerd out on this kind of stuff. I never thought to look for a wiki though. I'm interested in the overall story of the series, but some of the spin off stuff like the comics and movie have been bad. Supposedly the book is palatable though.

Rant warning-

Tried to play Extraction with a friend yesterday and was VERY disappointed. The move controllers weren't calibrating right. After locking the calibration in, the cursor would slowly creep off to the left side of the screen. I was constantly having to recalibrate mid-game. My friend didn't have as much trouble as I did though, so i'll have to look into it.

On top of that, since you are calibrating the controller to 1 point while holding it flat, when you attempt to turn the controller to the side for the alternate fire your cursor ends up jumping about 2 feet (in game feet) to the left or right depending on your grip.

I owned extraction for the Wii and sold it because of this package. The motion controls on the Wii were well executed. It's kind of a flawed game (cinematic camera moves too freely to allow good aiming most of the time), but combining that with the bad move controls made it too frustrating for us to play.
Anyway-

I've got a real bone to pick with people programming "pointer" games on the PS3. They all think they can do the "point at the eye to calibrate" thing, but years of light gun games have used the "Center, Corner, Corner" calibration for a reason.

The Shoot (and now Dead Space) both have weird calibration problems, meanwhile surprisingly the Toy Story 3 shooting gallery had the best aim function of the 3.

damn this game doesnt dissappoint. im only up to ch 9 and shit it keeps on improving. that bit where youre
dropping down from the satellite to go help that chick holy shit!!!!!
. i hate those fucking fast bastards though so far theyre the only enemy i get scared to face.

I've never even held a Move controller but I spent some time with the Wii version. I tried playing with the Dual Shock 3 and thought it was OK, but the floating cursor loses so much time in transit compared to a light gun equivalent. The camera bounces around a lot and it makes it hard enough to hit random item pick-ups normally, let alone with a regular controller. I'm interested in the story though so I might play through it, I just wish it was more playable - I'm sure I could finish it but good luck hitting a high score with a Dual Shock.

SO off the wall question but did anyone else buy their copy off Amazon. I specifically remember part of the pre-order page stating they had exclusive items like "hacker suit" yet it's been almost a a week and I've got no code to download any DLC (except the code for Ignition)...

you get the hacker from deadspace ignition. you play ignition , beat it and then its unlocked in the game along with another plasma cutter i believe.

Correct. More importantly, there are special rooms throughout the game which open up only if you've played Ignition. They *MIGHT* turn into Power Node rooms instead of being open/free but I doubt it. Totally worth the time to play through it, although you'll never want to play it again afterward.

ive been wondering about that myself as far as the unlocked rooms go do you need to wear the hacker suit to access them? im pretty happy using my security suit so unless that suit can open up those rooms i dont want to waste cash on it.

For the hacker suit, i heard somewhere all you had to do was play the first act of Ignition. At that point the game creates a save file. that's all DS2 is looking for to unlock the suit.

You don't have to beat Ignition...you just have to play it long enough for it to create a save file and you'll have access to the Hacker suit and the conduit rooms.

I was away for the weekend so I haven't played in a couple of days...dying to get back to it this week!

you still need to find the hacker suit schematic and purchase it for 20k. all it does it make hacking 2 blue things instead of 3. its a waste of 20k.

started my hardcore run today. died in chapter 1 at the tripod battle... CANT WAIT TO WATCH THAT OPENING SCENE AGAIN. /sarcasm

Well, it also provides 15% armor compared to the other armor's 10%, if my memory serves me. You don't get armor with that high of a percentage til a little later, and with the hacking bonus I don't think it was a waste. I stuck with the Hacker Suit until I got the Advanced Armor, which by then is a very necessary upgrade, especially with regard to inventory space.

Played through the first Chapter and it seems pretty good so far. I turned down the sensitivity to 1 because 2 is REALLY sensitive. I'm installing Extraction right now, so I'll pick up the game tomorrow.

I think you have to visit a shop to unlock something, just like the first game. It doesn't seem like you need Schematics to get weapons this time, which is a plus.

About the weapons .. yes you do have to find the schematics for them to unlock.

Suits I believe work the same way. So look all over!!!! Take your time if you want to get everything.. I have the Prima Limited Edition Dead Space 2 guide. And I have found things even they didn't find or put in the book. Overlooked power nodes mainly. They definitely are useful when starting your first playthrough on Zealot like me.

anyone else have 7.1 audio not working for this game ? I'm only getting audio output on 5 of my speakers even though my receiver says 7.1

So I'm working on my platinum and the "handgun" is a must haha bang bang pew pew.. I know you only get 3 save points doing this.. but does it do like on any other mode where it starts you off at a certain point once you've made it there?

You mean checkpoints? Nope. It's saves or nothing.

I did a few night marathon and gamed much more than I generally do. I am through this game and overall its pretty good. i feel it lost a little near the end for me, although the last chapter or two were pretty hectic and fun.

ha, that would kinda defeat the purpose of only getting 3 saves

edit: *sigh* got to chapter 2 and got trapped while in the washing machine room and died. this is going to get real tedious, real fast.
