Dead Space Extraction (Out Now!)

Did you watch the pre-"comics" or the movie?
Doom 3 looked pretty nice on Xbox.

Dead Space has really grown on me as an IP in the weeks since I've played through it. Pick this up, knuckleheads. Or don't, and bitch about how you're getting nothing but shovelware, and overlook your failure to contribute to viable 3rd party IPs on the Wii. You can always have "Bass Pro Shops Squirrel Hunt'n" and the like.

I'm willing to accept that a lot of the decline in after-market ports is due to the lack of a secondary marketing blitz.

Not to mention the quality of these games tend to suffer due to being handled by very small teams and the original game being optimized for a very different system.
this is the issue, I have played deadspace at this point... so why would I rebuy it, i rarely replay games at all, let alone rebuy and replay...

Now give us another characters story within the game now that would be sweet.

Well, I've never played Dead Space. And I have no intention of purchasing another hackneyed FPS product with an un-cleverly named space marine for my brand new PS3. I've only had the damn thing for 2 months and I'm already tired of playing the same freaking games I played last generation but with better textures. Let's see, there's Timeshift, Haze, Quake Wars, FEAR, Resistance, Call of Duty, Darkness, Fracture, Bad Company, and Bioshock that have all become the same game after about an hour of playing each of them.

At least the Wii will offer a different style gameplay in and above an overused theme and backstory. And it's the kind of gameplay that I want MORE of instead of the same 1st or 3d person shooter with a new skin. I realize I'm just asking for RE4 with a new skin, but at least there's only ONE Resident Evil 4, not four hundred that I've already played
So you wont be getting RE5, I take it. That's literally RE4 with better textures.
And co-op, and no escorting.
The "no escorting" business is debatable...
As long as the crotch doesn't show up then there's no funny business.
So you wont be getting RE5, I take it. That's literally RE4 with better textures.
Yeah, and it's plays like shit - just like every other Resident Evil game I've never been able to play for more than 30 minutes. I'd still buy RE5 if they dumbed it down for the Wii, though.

As I played the RE5 demo I kept wishing I had Wii aiming, then wishing I had Wiimote aiming with better textures and smoother animations. I literally feel caught between two worlds now that I have a PS3 and a Wii.

Well. So much for looking at OG Xbox footage.

And so much for you people who only have a Wii but still kind of wanted to play the game.

A bigger part of me wants to bitch about EA, but I guess I don't have the energy.

IT'S NOT ON RAILS; IT'S GUIDED AND CINEMATIC CAMERA!

Totally different. Geez.

Me? I'm actually digging that it's a new storyline that isn't some piece of marketing disguised as supplementary cultural merchandise, like a crappy anime, novel, or lunch box.

And on-rails has been soured for some of y'all, but not me: the last on-rails shooter I recall playing had the words "Panzer" and "Dragoon" in the title. So this could be good. I guess.

I couldn't have cared less about the premise or history of the game, so I'm actually more interested in it as an "on-rails" affair. The Wii has gotten me to love all things "on" and "rails" because I like to "shoot" by pointing my "gun".

It looks pretty good to me, although I'm a little disappointed by the "guided and cinematic camera" as well. I did pay $30 for House of the Dead 2&3 and Ghost squadron, so I'm more than happy to buy something like this for $30. Not for $50, though.

So awesome. Once i heard it was a all new story, i was very excited since im a huge dead space fan. Then i read it was a on-rails shooter, so i went to neogaf to read all the bitter tears of the wii fanboys, and man, neogaf did NOT disappoint. Such a shame to be a 1 console owner this gen. I am looking very forward to this game! Love me some dead space!

I've got mixed feelings on this one. I've got nothing against on-rail shooters (I just got HotD:Overkill and it's awesome) but this seems like a blown opportunity. Most people were expecting them to follow with a 3rd person game similar to the original Dead Space because RE4 showed that it can be done very well on the Wii and there was no information as to whether this would be a port or an original title. I'm glad they're expanding the story, but hopefully it doesn't feel like a cheap cash in if it doesn't provide the whole Dead Space experience we've been given so far in the first game and with the movie.

I'm confused. The Dead Space story is pretty tight (as in full). When does this take place?

The comics occurred when they cracked the planet. The movie takes place on the Ishimura during the first infection. The other game takes place on the Ishimura and the colony and ends with
the planet blowing up

Where on the timeline is this game? Is it just a rehash squeezed into a new presentation?

it's a cash in. the game is to be released later on this year, which means less development time, which means it'll be a rail shooter. rail shooters are probably easier to develop.

also, it feels that they are trying to get the most out of the product line. ea made a huge investment on this game for 360/ps3 and it didn't sell as they hoped for so they made an investment and didn't get what they were especting. knowing that there is a big audience on the wii, they made a sideline job of the game in hopes whatever sales it gets are redeemable. if it succeeds, then they'll make more of the same stuff.

i'm skeptical about ea now. they said that half their emphasis for 2009 is going to be for wii, how many of those will be going this route. maybe we'll see an on-rail action adventure game of mirrors edge? oh well, at least there are other games to look for.

Damnit... now I have to get it.
The IGN article says before Isaac Clarke hunkers on down to the Ishimura.
Why EA????? I'm glad this is a prequel so I can get more of the Dead Space story but I just don't get the reasoning behind the move to an on rails / lightgun shooter. Will most likely just rent, beat and return.

Heh I couldn't tell it was on-rails, but the graphics don't look bad. But since it's ground-up I guess the options were either a) Dead Rising port or b) simplified spin-off.

EDIT: hey, co-op multiplayer. I'm sold.

Is it new in the sense that Dead Space didn't tell this story or new in that they've never shown this before because the animated comics and movie all detailed what happened before Issac arrived?

Still not interested, but I'm mildly interested in what the game could be but wont.

RE:UC is not a survival ___ game, its a light gun game. There is potential here for on-rails to add something to the CLASSICAL survival-horror experience that has not been produced before.

The tenants of the genre being:
a) inventory management/conservation
b) not wanting to fight because of some combination of a) and also shitty battle system.

Imagine the horror of running out of ammo in a game where your movement is restricted. Now your fighting sucks AND your running sucks
Now your fighting sucks AND your running sucks that way, DMK.

DS bombed so EA is trying to get some of that money back with a low budget game so they can help fund DS 2 which won't be on the Wii.

If EA was serious about putting this game on the Wii they would be making a real DS game aka 3rd person horror title instead of a DS lite shooter or just give us DS2 along with the other guys.

Seriously, this game is being made by Eurocom. Does anyone really think that EA would trust these guys with a real AAA effort on the 360 or PS3? No, and the fact that they are dumping this game on them is because it's on Wii and they don't give a shit.
DS bombed

Scrubby my lad, you've been so long I'd almost forgotten how thick you could be. Welcome back!

To be fair, most non-Nintendo games sell very poorly after the first month or two. Dunno if Dead Space is one of them. We can ask Roland about that, I guess.
That chart is from the middle of December. It's now the middle of February.

Do you believe the game sold millions after the first few months?

Most games don't usually work like that and they are not intended to. They are front loaded with most of the sales happening in the first month. Nintendo is the only company who has consistently shown that their games can sell well long after release.

No. But that chart is incorrect seeing has how it has surpassed at least 1 million copies by now, and is almost at 1.5 (worldwide).

I really enjoy Dead Space on the PS3, and I'm disappointed that Dead Space Extraction will be a light-gun game. I'm not writing the game off, but I will most likely rent but not buy the game. I have never played a light-gun game that I felt had enough content to warrant a purchase.

now we're talking! this is how i feel when i read that article from ign. additionally, i feel there is also another company that is doing a similar action, like capcom with dead rising.

I wouldn't care if it was a light gun... if it has 2player or more, then bonus.

And going only half-ass will still be profitable on the Wii... even if you have your red headed albino cousin that's also your mother make the damn game.

Wii needed a WiiFit to surf on the mountains of shovelware.

i'm skeptical about it but also hopeful that it'll be a good game as i and everyone else haven't played the game yet or know the full details of the game. we'll just find out at the end of the year to see if it lives up to what the developers have done. besides, if it fails we'll know who's at fault and no one is really hurt by it other then the publishers and developers.

resident evil umbrella chronicles was an onrail shooter and it was good and it was something unexpected. maybe the same will happen here. hopefully.

there are other games to consider that are also rails coming this year like sin and punishment 2.

Whole mess of thick people up in this thread. It's pretty fun to watch Myke & DMK pick off the dense fanboys. Gave me some fine entertainment.

Will reserve judgment until more is known, but the fact that it's a completely diff game tailored to the Wii is loads better than a watered-down port.

At the risk of revitalizing a topic that I don't really care about, we now have up-to-date NPD numbers for Dead Space: 337k (360) and 212k (PS3).

Source?

dsH: Recently, Dead Space Extraction for Wii has been announced. Do you plan to integrate any new features? Will map sizes and number of enemies have to be reduced compared to Dead Space? Will it still be physics heavy?

Glen: You should see it. It looks fantastic on the Wii. In my opinion (and others) its one of the best looking games so far on the Wii. Obviously we will make a couple compromises but in other ways we can add more, especially taking advantage of the Wii controllers. There are new enemies, characters, story, puzzles, co-op and weapons. And yes, physics and even zero-g play a huge part in the game.

dsH: Can we expect it to look as good as the recently shown footage of Dead Space running on the original Xbox?

Glen: Better, I think. It really looks freakin great. I kid you not.

dsH: How do you want to scare the player on the Wii and will the game make use of the possibilities the Wii offers in terms of controls?

Glen: We will scare the player just as much as we did in Dead Space. We learned so much about scary, tension and horror that we'll put all that knowledge to use on Extraction. As I said above the Wii controller offers us some pretty cool innovative and unique opportunities for Extraction and we are taking advantage of every one.

New interview. I still don't understand how you have puzzles in a scripted, on-rails game. Is this really a FPS?

Im betting its not 100% on rails, so that you control when to move forward. Really, REALLY looking forward to this game, so glad its not just a crappy port but a whole new game and story.
