December 2006 Backwards Compatiblity Update (Live, now with 100% more Conker/SCII)
People have got to give up on old (non-extreme) sports games, particularly ones like NFL 2K5 and MVP Baseball 2005, as that would create a conflict of interest with the current franchises and--I'm guessing just this is once, most people will agree with me--in turn cost said franchises sales.
My response to that would be "What Franchises?"

MVP Baseball NCAA 2007 is only coming out for PS2 due to poor sales of 2006. They don't even have the MLB license.

The same is true of the NFL 2k5, that was the last game of the series before EA got exclusive rights.

Unfortunately for me (and I guess other people on here as well), they were the best two franchises for their respective sports, and I end up playing those instead of upgrading because there isn't a upgrade to the same franchise.

I cynically meant to say that the great old Xbox-gen franchises (i.e. NFL 2K and MVP) would undermine the 360-gen franchises with exclusive rights to those sports leagues (Madden and MLB).

This assertion might have been doubly true last year, but Microsoft reads the boards. They know what the gamers think of what exclusivity gets us. They know most people aren't just talking junk when they say they'd be happy to just play the old shit.
Wrestlemania 21...uh, I bet all you want to do is play Goldberg, HUH?! He's in your avatar. Well, I would recommend just dusting off the N64 and playing Wrestlemania 2000 or NWO vs WCW Revenge. Revenge was the best in the series, IMO. It made stellar leaps when compared to the first. Wrestlemania 2k's create-a-wrestler was the only thing that shined. But then again, everyone created overly powerful 5'3" 140lbs wrestlers so it ruined the game quick.

La Parka >>>>> Goldberg

...continues off-topic rambling...blah blah sorry
Goldberg isn't in WM21. He is in Raw 2 though, which is BC.

excellent update.. can't wait. I've had a copy of psychonauts sitting in my basement since my original Xbox died. Gotta pick up Indigo Prophecy again too.
Goldberg isn't in WM21. He is in Raw 2 though, which is BC.
lmao that a goldberg ott built itself within this topic..

no hes not in the game unfortunately (though ive heard he was originally meant to be on there)

good thing caw let you use theme songs so i created him anyways..

too bad 360 bc doesnt support soundtracks

I GUESS IM JUST SO PISSED ABOUT THIS BC LIST BECAUSE I HAVE OVER 100 XBOX GAMES. IVE NEVER (AND PROBABLY WILL NEVER AGAIN) SPEND SO MUCH ON A SYSTEM.

That's based on the premise that game boards matter, and that real solid evidence, such as the 2+ million in sales of Madden 07, don't matter. Those who say "we're happy with the old stuff" pale in comparison to the number of people who buy a fresh sports game every year.

There's nothing to corroborate your claim. Is it a conflict of interest in one's mind? Sure. Has it caused backlash in the marketplace? Not a single damn time.

If EA put out a game with two stick figures batting each other over the head with bananas and titled it Madden 08 2+ million people would buy it.

Hehe, and I was just thinking yesterday how if Nintendo put out a bucket of marbles with a string of christmas lights, and called it "New innovative gaming" people would line up in droves and pay through the nose.

Whoa, Psychonauts, Indigo Prophecy and Shenmue 2? Maybe a Jet Set Radio Future addition isn't too far behind.

Your over-the-top claim only proves exactly what I was saying.

I not disputing that the 'boards community' is a very small slice of the USA Today-type pie chart when it comes to sporto gaming, but it's a slice nonetheless. They want every last sale, and making a game like MVP backwards compatible would cost MLB 2K7 at least a few thousand sales.

On the 'flip side', they may not be working on making these games 'BC' because the small number of people that would play doesn't justify the effort. Me, I think it's more of the former than the latter, but whether that's 51/49 or 90/10, I couldn't say.
I agree. Tons of people are complaining about a game or two they don't have BC, when they have around 300 BC. I still think the 360 easily has the best backwards compatibility due to actually upgrading the games.
Yeah, but as this thread attests, if everybody can name two or three high profile games that aren't BC, that kind of adds up. Personally, I'd rather have more games playable than less games with minor upgrades. And regardless of how important you think BC is, it's pretty hard to argue that MS has done the best job of it, when they haven't even gotten to the level of the other two consoles with a year's lead time.

What are your BC wishes right now?

me:

--Capcom vs. SNK 2
--Marvel Vs. Capcom 2
--King of Fighters 02/03
--Street Fighter Anniversary
--Panzer Dragoon Orta
--DoAXBV

Good to see DOA Ultimate and SC: DA added... but they're still missing a ton nof games they need to have supported. Better than nothing though.

Not as much of an effect, I'd argue, as dropping MLB 2K6 to $19.99 will.

This is a great update. I'll crack open my copy of Indigo once this goes Live. Here are some other games that I'm looking for:

Armed & Dangerous
Beyond Good & Evil
Brothers in Arms 1 & 2
Chronicles of Riddick
Crimson Sea
Deus Ex
Guity Gear
Gunvalkyrie
Jet Set Radio Future
KOF '02/'03
NBA Street Vols 2 & 3
Obscure
Oddworld Stranger's Wrath
Otogi 1 & 2
Phantom Dust
Project Snowblind
Silent Hill 2
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Soul Calibur II

Those games go BC and I'll be able to get rid of the big black box.

But, to defend MS, they have to build the emulation from the ground up.

The Wii is a Gamecube and the PS3 has a PS2 in it. I guess they could have thrown the original Xbox architecture in the 360, but would have added to the size and price of the system.

Microsoft couldn't use the same chip because the manufacturer now makes the Cell Processor for the PS3.
Whoa, Psychonauts, Indigo Prophecy and Shenmue 2? Maybe a Jet Set Radio Future addition isn't too far behind.
Lets hope for that!!!

I bought Psychonauts about a month ago for $5 at TRU and am happy that I will soon be able to experience this great game. I got Shenmue 2 for $4 at gamestop a long time ago even though I didnt have an xbox because it had the DVD movie included with it.

fuck !!!!!!!!!!!

Where the hell is Chronicles of Riddick? This is fuckin ridiculous. It is one of the top 5 games on xbox with no sequel or anything else for 360 users....

YES!!! Buffy was THE Xbox game I was waiting to go BC.

Unfortunately I recently sold my unplayed copy of Psychonauts because I don't have an Xbox and I never thought they would add it.
Microsoft couldn't use the same chip because the manufacturer now makes the Cell Processor for the PS3.
Huh? You do realize that IBM made the PowerPC CPU in the 360, as WELL as the Cell, right?
Huh? You do realize that IBM made the PowerPC CPU in the 360, as WELL as the Cell, right?
I think he meant that the original XBOX had an Nvidia GPU and the 360 has an ATI GPU. Nvidia now makes the RSX GPU for the PS3. On top of that the original XBOX had an Intel based CPU whereas the 360 has an IBM PowerPC chip.

Those looking to rid themselves of the black-and-green monolith once and for all, aside from the relatively small amount of money/trade value you'd get for it, what's the hurry? Sure, it takes up space, but even if the 360 went 100% BC, I'd still keep mine around as an emergency back-up for those games. If my Microsoft fun machine took a shit and died*, I'm not sure I'd get the replacement the next day, or even within the next month.

Besides, I don't really think we'll ever see 100% Xbox backwards compatibility on the 360, or even 90%, for that matter. My cynical views on some old sports franchises would support this.

*--Yes, that's a somewhat obscure QOTSA reference.

Sure, I know why it's not totally BC. I don't even blame them, though I wish they'd been up front about how it was going to work a little earlier on. But saying it's the best of the bunch is just silly.

Nice. Psychonauts and Shenmue II were main reasons I wanted (and eventually getting) an Xbox more than a 360. Ah well, at least there's nothing exclusively on the 360 I want to play yet.

I could easily argue that the other two haven't gotten to the 360s level because they don't upgrade the games at all. It's hard to see backwards compatibility as that great in the other two when it doesn't improve anything. All the Wii and PS3's backwards compatibility does is save a little money and a little shelf space. If you've tried playing BC games on the 360 in HD, you know they can look a hell of a lot better.

As someone else previously mentioned they were waiting for some games to become backwards compatible that were on PS2 as well. They could easily play them on their PS3, but they rather play upgraded versions on their 360.
Sure, you could argue that I can just pick up three out of the two for PS2, but I play PS2 on my PS3, which leads to two major problems: a) the game has a 25% of not being BC (yes, PS3 is going through BC problems too). b) games look worse on PS3 than they originally looked on PS2, plus I can run them in 720p on my 360 :D
That's what I meant. Thanks for clearing that up, gofishn.

In case anyone is wondering, K-Mart is having a clearance sale and, if you're lucky, Psychonauts Xbox can be had for $3.

I just bought my copy tonight for $3, I honestly can't wait to try it ;)

Hook me up, son!
No Conker's, lame. Oh well, at least there are good games on the list.
I know, Conker is the one game I really want BC, my original Xbox is fine, but my controllers are just so bad. Hopefully, by some miracle, they will add Conker.

On another note, I guess I should have picked up Psychonauts on clearance at TRU, hopefully I can find one at Kmart like Roufuss said :)
Hook me up, son!
A friend bought the other one... if I find any more you will be first in line.

Seriously though, these should be at a few K-Mart's marked at full price since they never change the stickers.

Sorry if its been answered but are these YMMV or everywhere? I don't even know what this game is, I asked what was so good about it but no one ever answered. For $3 you can't hardly go wrong though.
Aquaman??? Why couldn't they do a slightly less crappy game that people actually own?
What? You think they built the game engine for a licensed piece of shit from the ground up? You think someone at MS said "You know what the American people want to play? Aquaman!"?

Of course not. It's probably the same goddamned engine a dozen other Xbox pieces of shit used. That's why it's BC. Not because they broke their backs to piss you off, but the more likely version of the story is it just happened to work after trying to make another game work on BC.

I'm not the happiest or nicest person on earth, and I sure am not typically a "glass half full" dude, but y'alls some "glass ain't got shit in it" grousing motherfuckers. Bitch for Shenmue II and Psychonauts all day long...now it's "Where's Panzer Dragoon Orta?" "I want this!" "I want that!"

Goddammit. Grow up. Enjoy the new BC games. I wish they were coming faster and I wish they came to my house, asked me what games I owned, and made them all BC too. That's not gonna happen, however.

I'm not pickin' on you personally...a lot of the attitude in this thread is some bitchin' bitches who just can't be happy that Microsoft added some titles to something we thought was going to die (BC projects) before too long.

It's from Tim Schafer's company, Double Fine Productions.

He is the man behind Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Grim Fandango, some of the best PC adventure games ever put out.

Backwards compatibility and "upscaling" are apples and oranges. Again, you may prefer the games running in HD (who wouldn't?), but the key element to backwards compatibility -- by definition -- is having the games from the previous generation or so be compatible with the current system. When someone bills their system as BC, that's what they mean. "Slightly more than half our games run, but they look better on a good TV" isn't really the understood definition of the term.

Anyone making a guess as to when this is going live? They usually release some demos and updates on Friday no?

I'm positive I'm the only dude who can't wait to try out my new copy of R6: Lockdown, since I got it for $9 and won't be getting Vegas till Christmas.

Gonna have to quote this one because you're right... I mean, yea, I'm kinda pissed that Morrowind, Mercenaries, and Conker still aren't BC, but at least Psychonauts and Indigo Prophecy is.

I've wanted to play Psychonauts for a loooooooooong time but the PS2 version is inferior to the xbox one... I'm finally glad to play it.

The next update could have Panzer Dragoon Orta and people will be going "Where's my Jet Set Radio Future?!?!"... actually, fuck PDO, I actually do want JSRF =/

But the fact MS is still supporting this, and this update actually has alot of GOOD games, is great! The last BC update I didn't care for, but this one?

Splinter Cell Double Agent
Psychonauts
Indigo Prophecy
Shenmue 2
Scarface
Ultimate Spider-Man
DoA Ultimate

These are all FANTASTIC games... I remember the first few BC updates were horrible and mostly shitty games. This is just proving to me MS is still plugging away at it and each update is better than the last, and the more shitty games they bring out means the next list will be even more fantastic since the shit games are all gone.

The next update could have Panzer Dragoon Orta and people will be going "Where's my Jet Set Radio Future?!?!"...
Not me. I'm just waiting for PDO, and then I can finally get rid of the old Xbox. I'm not going to just be happy because they released a list with a bunch of games I don't ever want to play. I'm sure Splinter Cell and Shenmue are great, if you like those games, but I don't. So as far as I'm concered (and that's the key phrase. I'm talking about myself here) this update sucks. And the updates will keep sucking until PDO is there.

fuck Morrowind, JSRF, Mercenaries, Psychonauts, Mortal Kombat, etc. Until I see PDO the BC sucks.
fuck Morrowind, JSRF, Mercenaries, Psychonauts, Mortal Kombat, etc. Until I see PDO the BC sucks.
fuck that, JSRF is a must! But yes, PDO does deserve a place on the list, but don't fuck over JSRF, that's sacralidge! Especially to a CAG knowing it sells on average for $3!

I mean, PDO probably uses an engine unique to itself so that's why it's taking so long... I know that's the reason behind Morrowind taking forever as well.

It's a blessing we're even still getting BC updates since the general tone a few months was that "it wasn't worth the effort".

But now that we're getting some things like Shenmue 2, I can't imagine that PDO is far behind.

I'm halfway tempted to sell my DC copy of Shenmue 2 and just get it for the 360 now, espically since I can get $50 for my import and get it on the Xbox for $5.99 at EB.
