Demon's Souls pricedrop $49.99 (44.49 now)

The only thing hard in the game is Cthulhu...

I don't care how good I get in the game, these dudes frighten me on every single playthrough...
Again, this is simply untrue. Aside from a boss fight, there are rare occasions where you can't stop within a few seconds by simply clearing out enemies or running back far enough to be undetected. Just quit the game and you can pick up right where you left off. The save\quit anywhere feature completely makes up for the lack of pause button as I am a huge believer that all games should let you save anywhere since we all have lives.

Being a family man, my time is always limited and I never once had a problem.
Why should you have to clear out a room or run away to an undetected area if something in your real life comes up? Pause has existed for this very reason since the days of NES.

To paraphrase the zero punctuation review as he narrates what the developers must have thought when making it impossible to pause:
"Pause you seem to say? What kind of f@ggot are you? I don't care if you need to answer the phone - real gamers have no friends."

That pretty much sums up the idea of not having a pause feature.

All this talk about the game has given me inspiration to give DS another go this summer though. We'll see if I can clear out the backlog for it.

All of the environments are incredible. They have a great sense of place, and create so much despair for the player.
^THIS.

Perfectly said. Agree 100%.

I've wanted this game since day 1 as I feel I'll love it for its atmosphere, setting, gameplay, etc. But I'm a CAG at heart. Nevertheless, now that it's price has dropped and my friend giving me a $20 amazon gift card, I'll finally be able complete my soul once and for all!

I'll chime in to beat the already dead horse...

I bought this game along with Uncharted 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 during a Gamestop's B2G1F promotion before Christmas... sometime mid December 2009. Of the 3 games, it was the first game I inserted into my PS3... and... it wasn't until late February 2010 that I ejected it to play Uncharted 2.

Yes. It's THAT good. :)

If you find it hard...
use a Moon Winged Spear and the Purple Flame Shield combo. You will first gain access to the Short Spear from the Dregling vendor in world 1-1 for 1500 souls. You can actually get the items, including the Purple Flame Shield, on the dragon cliff in 1-2 if you lure the Red Dragon away and run like hell to the item locations. You'll get the idea when u actually GET there. :)

What is it about the online that makes this worth getting while it still has lots of users? I was planning on waiting and just getting this cheap eventually.

It really only matters if you're interested in the online part of this game, which is primarily helping others or killing others. Other online aspects are messages and replays of other people dying. Those two can sometimes be helpful in avoiding traps, but they're not must have features.

If you're just interested in the single player aspect, then it's not that big of a deal if you play before the online dies out.

So you can help or kill others during single player, they just show up within your game it sounds like. Sounds interesting but can live without it, will keep waiting I think.

I'll describe it a bit more.

For co-op, you can lay down a blue stone sign and if people need help, they'll see you and they can request you help them either get through the level or fight some black phantom invader.

For versus, you invade someone else's world as a black phantom and you try to kill them.

You can't really choose who you join up or invade and there's no voice chat. It's supposed to add to the fact that you're alone in this world.

I couldn't stand Demon Souls. After I beat it, I ran my LE straight to GameStop. I don't care how much I lost on that, I just wanted to never have to deal with the game again.

lol @ you not standing it, yet you beat it.

Easily the best game this gen.

Maybe if you haven't played many games this gen, but DS isn't THAT good.

I guess the staff at Gamespot don't play many games, eh? (*cough!*gameoftheyear!*cough!*)

It's cool that you don't like it, but don't insult someone who does. Especially when the informed consensus agrees with them.
Maybe if you haven't played many games this gen, but DS isn't THAT good.
I've played a lot of games this gen and believe me DS is THAT good.

you have to admit that demon souls was a good ride. Surprisingly Shadow of the Colossus is a very similar feel to it as this one had. I hope the next one adds voice chat and crazy large bosses.
Has a date been announced for when the DS servers will go down?
hold up there buddy, there is no indication that they plan on shutting down demon's souls' servers any time soon.
Has a date been announced for when the DS servers will go down?
You are probably getting confused with the license agreement at the beginning of DS that states the servers will be up for a year at least before they could "possibly" shut them down one day. The thing is, that is the same with any game that has online. I have a feeling it will stay up at least for the majority of the PS3's life cycle until PS4 or whatever comes out. The only people I can think of that shut their servers down on games this current gen are EA and 'Calling All Cars' by Eat, Sleep, Play from the PSN store. Microsoft shut down online servers for Xbox games, but those were from last gen.

No game can light a candle to Demon's Souls. It is by far the gold standard for this Generation. Its hard to impress me these days. I have been a gamer since the Atari 2600 back in 1980. It is by far the best, most original, one of a kind game out there. If you don't at least rent it.... you will kick yourself. Can't wait for Demon's souls 2. Nothing compares. Beat it once... beating it x2 this weekend.
I figured I would get this game when it's around $20. Seems interesting enough, but a bit of a gamble for $50.
after unexpectedly sinking 70 hours into in the course of 5 days, I can say that whatever you pay will be worth it. Give it a rental and you'll end up buying it for sure.
I brought this game day 1 but I still do not have a PS3 yet. I planned to play this maybe in 2-3 years time...

I just want to ask, is it possible to play this game without internet connection? I hope it is not one of those games that will not work once the online server is turned off.
Yes, the game will work. You will miss out on being invaded (or invading others.) Also, there have been several events over the year where they make your game pure black or white.

You have the option to play offline anyway.

Definitely picking this game up one day, but too much of a backlog right now and way too busy. However, for everyone else not sure about the game, you should take from everyone's comments that this seems to be a game that you either end up loving or hating. I don't see many opinions that state the game was simply "ok". Obviously if you're looking for a more relaxing game then this isn't the right fit for you. If you feel up for a challenge then...well there are plenty of good quotes throughout this thread to let you know what you're in for.
Maybe if you haven't played many games this gen, but DS isn't THAT good.
I have played nearly every damned game worth playing this gen and think Demon's Souls is better than any of them. Including, ME2 (2nd best game this gen), SMG, Zelda TP, MW2, much better than GoW3, Bayonetta, Dead Space, FO3, ES:O, KZ2, Valkyria Chronicles, FFXIII, much much better than MGS4, etc.

Yes, Demon's Souls isn't THAT good. It's SUPER FANTASTICO !

Wow, some REAL cult-like following here.

All I'm saying is I played it all the way through and hated it, and all my friends, all of them beat it and they ranged from calling it tepid to hating it more than me.

I simply don't think it's all that.

Why would you or your friends play through a game you didn't like? My time is valuable and if I don't like a game, I sell it or trade it. Especially with a game like DS, which is hard and probably takes some time to beat. Just doesn't make sense.

Because we're gamers. There are several games I've played through that I didn't like but weren't aggressively bad enough to make me stop. The impulse to beat a game just to call it done is strong. A strong and pretty impressive first level can keep hopes up even as the game begins a steep slide into crap. First impressions are everything, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, I suppose.

Then the slowpokes, we just trolled them by saying OH YES THE GAME IS GREAT YOUR JUST CASUAL PLAY IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE FINAL BOSS IS THE MOST EXTREME

If I were you I'd try to rent it or borrow it from someone. I went around reading all the reviews and what the gamers that bought it said so I went ahead and bought into the hype and picked up a copy. Two words: Severely disappointed. For me the game was incredibly boring, especially during boss battles.

Luckily I only spent $20 on the game and was able to make double that when I sold it. Again, try to rent or borrow a copy before you buy into the hype and purchase the game. It could be that you'll really enjoy the game like the others, or it could be that you really end up hating the game.

Sounds cool. I'll still wait for it to get cheap. I'd prefer a great challenge and not request help from someone. I would like to challenge but I don't want to shell out the money just for that. I hope when I do play it it lives up somewhat to the hype, most games never do.

the game was never hyped. it's more of a grassroots thing based on the quality of the game itself, nothing more. they never advertised the game, nor were there any commercials for it

:bs:

Well, "all my friends" bought 10 copies and loved it so much they sleep with them at night. And my beautiful girlfriend, who is from Canada, also loves it, and she never plays games at all.

Seriously?

I can maybe believe you put in the time and trouble to complete the game despite disliking so much. But now "all your friends" bought it (a game few people even heard of), played it, FINISHED it, and disliked/hated it? Riiiiight. Sounds like you are making %$&# up so you can find more fictional support against this "cult".

Let's just stick to the facts:
* most CAGs not only liked it, but loved it
* most game reviewers loved it (metascore 89)
* Gamespot named it GOTY 2009
* a handful of CAGs found it average or disliked it

And no, I'm not a fanboi or a cultist. I just view "all my friends hated it" comments with great suspicion when the majority liked something. I don't think second-hand stuff like that adds to a productive conversation.

My girlfriend was super annoyed while I played through Final Fantasy XIII but she told me that Demon's Souls has her seal of approval, while she watched me play.

Demon soul's is by far the most impressive, fun, addicting, challenging, and AWESOME game ever played. I have sunk over 120 hrs into it on 3rd playthru. It seeps into your mind and when your not playing it, Demon Soul's is all you can think about!

It's that good! Yes, it is challening, but the perfect level - when you finish a level, kill the boss, or defeat am invading phantom - the rush and sense of accomplishment - WOW!

Bought it on release day for 59.99 and it's worth every penny and much much more!

Get this game and get it now!

So my gf goes to gamestop to buy it new today so we can play online together. Well apparently they gave her a gutted copy with the tape seal over it. She gets hope and *surprise* she gets a used copy of dead space instead.... Then the store had the balls to tell her over the phone that she was lying and she is trying to scam the store over and threatened to pursue action.

I'm going over with her to the store tomorrow to make sure its taken care of, but some of these gs employees are the ones that deserve some freaking jail time for the crap they pull.

This is the best game of the generation so far. It basically takes all the bullshit from RPG's, removes it, put's in monster hunter-esque combat and tons of innovations from level composition to the online features. 10/10

It was certainly hyped up by consumers and critics, that's what I meant. Look at the comments in this thread alone. I'm not saying that's bad. I just hope it lives up to others opinions of it because I find that usually games do not. Everyone has different tastes.

hype, to me, is something that is created well before a game is released by the media. Be it from advertisements or commercials. The good word, as it were, was from people that actually played the game and felt it deserved the praise it was given, but this was after the game was released.

Pretty much. I never really felt the "halo hype" as I call it these days. In fact most people who I've personally shown the game to never heard of it but fell in love with it (except for a couple who cried why they would make a game that is hard...yah). Anyways, I feel this game was built on quality reputation and what made this game a legit success.

I see that as one type of hype. I also think that if everyone is saying it's the greatest thing since sliced bread based on their experience, it creates hype for a game. I'm going into it with these huge expectations now. Will it live up to them? I hope it does. But I'm not going to always like the same things as you. If we like the same gameplay elements and such then it will probably live up to the hype. Hype can be a very good thing in this situation. It's likely I will at least enjoy the game even if I don't enjoy it as much as you did, I hope I do.
