Diablo III / Diablo II Battle.net Thread
Some good news.

So, sounds like this week we'll be getting another update.

Its ridiculous how long this has gone on for, but it is blizzard and most of us expected as much.
It's still ridiculous how they give you like no information/updates at all, even when they say they will.
I'm still ticked off about the lack of LAN play in future Battle.Net games. This, from the company who introduced the "Spawn" idea so you could play with your friends? This, from the company who's still selling 10 year old games at a huge price considering their age?

Maybe I'm getting old, but I've pretty much decided to boycott Blizzard for this move. I attend LAN parties that regularly have 50-100 people show up, and there's never an internet connection. Steam is enough of a headache in those situations, but now they're making Battle.Net even worse.
Well in today's age, everyone has interent.

Is it rare that people can get together like that now, with VIOP, Vent, Teamspeak... I do it frequently with my clanmates.

I mean you don't see 360/ps3 going to peoples house and bringing their boxes to play?

Plus that's super lazy, to not have internet at a lan party. how hard is it to plug in a 24 port switch for cheap.

The last time I did a lan game, that couldn't do it over the network was D2 back in 2001. I haven't done one since. I even did a direct to IP game of Total Annihilation from 1999 just this past year.

I think now, if people want a lan party, they can, but to cut ones self from the internet to do so is redunculous.

If Battle.net is as robust as they claim it, and STEAM does that ALREADY... then I have 100% confidance in it. (And think boycotting this is even more silly).

Well... here's that update:

Update - 10/14

The decision on whether or not to include the enlarged stash size has been slightly delayed. As mentioned previously it would require some additional weeks of development and would remove one of the most requested features were we unable to include it. If it were to be included the concern is that it could render Diablo II unplayable, and repairing the issue after the fact would draw heavily on development resources. Which is also something we obviously want to avoid.

We hope to be able to reach a conclusion and decision soon on the future of the 1.13 patch, and we’ll keep you updated as it develops.
So nothing.

GUESS WHAT BITCHES 1.13 PTR IS OUT AND I'M ALREADY PLAYING IT. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

Travel no longer my friends - the Diablo II 1.13 Public Test Realm is LIVE!

Q: How do I begin testing on the PTR?
A: When you start Diablo II change your Battle.net gateway to “ClassicBeta”. When you log in the 1.13 patch will be applied to your game and you can begin testing the changes made in the patch. Since it's a new realm you'll need to create a new account.

Q: I don't see the ClassicBeta realm in my gateway list!
A: Log into one of the other gateways first, then back out and the classicbeta realm will appear.

Q: What if I want to play the normal game again?
A: Simply choose any of the other (non-PTR) gateways. Your game will be reverted to version 1.12 and you’ll be able to play on the live realms as normal.

Q: Where are my characters?
A: The PTR realm is separate from the live realms so your current characters aren’t carried over. You’ll need to create a new character to begin testing. But, cheats are enabled and you may use the following cheats by typing them into chat while in a game:
Gold # - Will provide the amount of gold specified
Level # - Will increase your level to the number specified
Waypoints 1 - Will activate all waypoints. You must still reach an act before that act’s waypoints will be unlocked with this cheat.

Q: What happens to my characters once the PTR testing period ends?
A: They remain on the PTR realm to be removed once the test ends. Characters on the PTR realm won’t transfer to the normal realms.

Q: How long with the PTR run for?
A: As long as we deem necessary to ensure the patch and changes are solid.

Q: Where can I give feedback and what kind of feedback do you want?
A: All 1.13 PTR feedback and bug reports should ONLY be posted in the Diablo II Test Realm Forum here: http://forums.battle.net/board.html?forumId=20601702&sid=3000

• All post should have a subject line that clearly describes the bug or feedback being given
• Use the search feature to ensure a thread doesn’t already exist before posting
• When reporting a bug include as much information as you can, including steps to reproduce it if possible
• Any non-constructive posts may be deleted and the poster’s privilege to post revoked
• This is a chance for you to ensure the 1.13 patch includes changes and balance tweaks that you think would lead to a better overall experience. Getting the information to us in a clear and logical way helps us understand your view and makes it easier for us to collect feedback for any potential updates to the 1.13 patch before release.

Looks like there might be male and female versions of each class in Diablo 3, as there are screenshots of a female monk. I wonder what other kind of character customization they might offer beyond just a gender select.

I haven't played this game in a while, but I keep logging in to keep my characters from deletion in hope of D3 somehow importing saves or at least maybe trophies lol. Is 1.13 out for real, or still on PTR?

It's still on PTR. They are actually redoing the patch (or at least adding to it) since a lot of people complained that 1.13 was garbage and was not adding any of the things people asked for or fixing a lot of bugs that needed to be fixed. There is no ETA on it now.

Bard? think that will have the range type abilities because we really don't have anything like an Amazon or rouge type...

Das future of BattleNet revealed....even though this looks like it will effect Starcraft more than D2 (or D3 if it's released before we are all old and gassy).

Battle.net Update

Blizzard reveals the big changes coming to its online service.

by Steve Butts

February 10, 2010 - Battle.net's been going strong for 14 years now and is currently being used by more than 12 million gamers. But, never being ones to leave well enough alone, Blizzard is preparing to launch the largest update the service has ever seen. Details on how the service is changing were just revealed on starcraft2.com last night.

In a video interview on the site Greg Canessa, project director for the new Battle.net, explains that the company is trying to change the service in order to create "a world class online game service for all Blizzard games." Since the service is being designed specifically for Blizzard's games, Canessa promises it will be better integrated than those "other" online gaming services.

The new service is built on three key pillars:

1. Always Connected
The new Battle.net will require a constant connection, even in the single player campaign. It will allow players to make use of one persistent character account that tracks the various achievements and unlockables, including the portraits and decals that will be offered in Starcraft 2. Players can log onto their Battle.net account to see which achievements they or their friends have obtained, and even see the criteria for unlocking the achievements they haven't yet earned.

Battle.net will also allow players to synch their campaign progress on the server, which should be a big help to people when reformatting hard drives, reinstalling the game, or merely playing from another computer. It's not yet clear whether those saves will still exist on the client side, but it sounds like the online synching is merely an option and not a requirement.

The constant connection also means that Blizzard can now use Battle.net to deliver content updates, game news and service alerts to everyone who owns their games.

2. Competitive Arena for Everyone
With the current Battle.net setup, it's sometimes been hard for newcomers to fight their way through the initial matches against veteran players to become truly competitive. The new service offers a much smoother entry to the games by including casual modes, practice matches and cooperative play against AI opponents. The system, Canessa says is "one of the most sophisticated in the industry," will learn your skill level as you play to better rank you when you move to the competitive arenas.

Players in the competitive arena will now be automatically matched to opponents of the appropriate skill level. The new system will even allow groups of players of varying skill levels to be matched against an equivalent group where possible.

3. Connecting Community
The whole point of connection would be lost without a significant social networking component, so the new Battle.net will feature all the regular features of other popular gaming services. Players will have the option to create friends lists and use text and voice chat both inside and outside of the games. More significantly, the new service allows for communication across different games, so you can chat with your friends in World of Warcraft even while you're playing Starcraft 2.
That's lame, what if I want to play offline or just the single player campaign?
I don't like the way this sounds either. I would think no matter what they do you can always count on the PC 'modding' community to help your play your games the way you want to play them.

Yet another retail game making the wrong moves.

Jezus, I guess "constant connection" is fast becoming the industry norm...

The important Q: what if a "constant connection" isn't viable (like modem use, or playing on the go)?

Is Blizzard forgetting which game franchise has an MMO or something?
Constant connection? They can fuck off with garbage like that.
They are trying to be Steam.... but even steam allows offline mode.
That's lame, what if I want to play offline or just the single player campaign?
I would think that they might realize that and maybe, hopefully fix it to do purely offline mode.
Yet another retail game making the wrong moves.
More like another dumb decision by a gaming conglomerate like Activision, who gets to throw their weight around and make decisions because they shoved a bunch of money up someone's ass.

With all the talk recently of COD going pay to play, I bet Diablo 3 will as well, though I am not sure how surprising that is. I've expected something like $5 a month for awhile now.

I honestly wouldn't be shock either. I almost seems like they are trying to build B-net up as a service similar to XBL.

They can keep that nonsense. They can let the next generation of dopes purchase that.

I will be very disappointed if playing Diablo 3 multiplayer will require any fee other than the price of the game itself as I have been looking forward to it for so long (even with rainbows and unicorns) and will never pay a monthly fee for any game. Not even D3.

I can almost live with this constant connection thing, but if they charge a sub fee like many MMO's do, you can count me out. I refuse to have to purchase a game, then have to pay to play on top of that. Maybe if the game were free, or like $5, then they charged $15 a month to play, I could possibly see that. But the full $50 plus $15-$20 a month is BS.

I'm going to jump aboard the speculation train and also say that when Blizzard starts charging an entry fee of $400 for their games and forcing me to buy 10 peripherals and charging me for every enemy I kill and every loot I pick up and stops supporting kb/m, I too will not buy their products.

So far, it sounds like the constant connection/Online Sync'ing thing is currently just specifically if you play over Battlenet. No where is it mentioned that Battlenet is going to be pay-to-play service.

You need to be connected to play the single player campaign.

If you play over battlenet for achievements, etc.. I'm still hoping there'll be an offline mode that you can play w/o having to assign a battlenet account to.
No where is it mentioned that Battlenet is going to be pay-to-play service.
I never said it was mentioned, just that I wouldn't be shocked if it went that way. The CEO for Activision seems to have a one track mind about making things pay to play, so him making blizzard charge for their stuff isn't a big stretch. I really hope it doesn't go that route as I have been looking forward to D3 for years (I was one of the suckers that bought the D2 CE lol).

I've vowed to NOT play D2 and wait for D3.... plus there are plenty of worthy games to play.

Though a bit of me wants D3 sooner than later... ugh.

i am back from spring break. its go time.
