I've never tried. That's mainly because I know what the odds are, and I get discouraged.
For what it's worth, here's a few statistics...
In 1k soft resets, the odds that you see a shiny are ~11%.
In 5k soft resets, it increases to ~46%
In 10k soft resets, it increases to ~70%
In 20k soft resets, it increases to ~91%
A few numbers of interest:
At 5678 soft resets, the odds of seeing a shiny are 50.0005%. What this means is after that point, you're more likely to have seen a shiny than not. At this point, you could consider yourself "unlucky" if you haven't seen your shiny.
At 38k soft resets, the odds of seeing a shiny are 99%.
At 57k soft resets, the odds of seeing a shiny are 99.9%
.Hmm.. interesting stats.. Lets see here. I clocked my DS's Soft reset time at about 23 seconds. So thats about 2.6 times per minute, so 57K sr's non stop would take about
28,500 minutes, now thats about 475 hours or almost 19 days of doing nothing but soft resetting non stop. Mother of god....

If any of my math is wrong i do not apologize. math is a tool of the dark lord.
No matter how discouraging i really do appreciate your info though.
