Diamond/Pearl starter Pokemon

i cant really say that i like any of the new starters... the just look kinda, well, dumb. i saw what they look like, and im highly inclined to trade a low level pokemon into my game to head my party instead :p although maybe ill just catch an Abra ASAP and use that...

i was kinda hoping the rumors about the starters having different types would be true...

Just because they look dumb at the start doesn't mean their evolutions will look dumb. It only takes a few hours to get your starter to evolve anyway. I'm optimistic that the game is substantial and long, though I wish they'd make it harder. Oh well, got to keep the kiddies involved I guess.

Hmm, the ability to have a flying water creature or a water creature with access to ice attacks in the early part of the game sounds rather excellent. So the fire monkey will probably have access to fighting attacks. Hopefully they'll give the new grass creature access to a new type besides ground.

If Pokemon History tells anything, Blue is the way to go. My Blastoise in Blue version had enough special points to knock out the same level charizard with one water move and it had enough special points to withstand Venasaur's Solar beam for 2-3 turns. Go Penguin!

In the reworked versions (Fire Red/Leaf Green), Charizard was
the best bet because of it's flying ability and it getting classified as a dragon type.

1. Charizard was the worst bet for FR/LG, his dual typing gave him terrible weaknesses not to mention his meh stats.

2. Charizard is, was, and probably forever will be Fire/Flying, not Dragon.

On Topic: I'd need to see the evolutions first, but I like the Grass and Water so far.
Oh man, I'm definitely picking the monkey!! He looks so bad ass (lol, not really).
Not to mention his ass is on FIRE!!!

Anyways....ill probably choose the penguin cause I always had a thing for them...

You guys read too damn much into stats on pokemon.

Choose the cutest cuddliest one and pet it and brush it's hair...

oh wait... you mean this game isn't just about cute and cuddly aminals?

Anyways, i'd just choose the penguin. The way I see it, any animal that slides around on it's stomach is alright in my book.

Does anyone else besides me just play with the most awesome pokemon they find, not just the most powerful? I always

On two, my bad. I confused it being able to use Dragon Rage in this version with being a dragon type. I do have to disagree with you on it being the worst choice though. The fact that Charizard can do normal or enchanced damaged to every type of Pokemon excluding rock (which can be fixed by giving it a fighting attack like Seismic Toss or Mega Punch/Kick) is a big advantage. Additionally Charizard takes no damage from all ground attacks including magnitude, dig, and earthquake (which is doubly effective if you have Charizard learn it through a TM). Plus, equiping it with a berry will help offset it's bad defense. Considering its the fastest of the base Pokemon and it has the strongest attack of the three base Pokemon I prefer it even though it has less defense and special then the other two.

If you play an offensive team Charizard is one of the most versatile Pokemon you can use because of it's ability to access flying, steel, dragon, fire, and fighting techniques. The only fight it's totally useless in is against Brock and that fight is early enough that you'll be able to power through it with a Butterfree. It may not be everyone's strategy, but I can effectively use a Charizard by mixing it in with a team that uses a lot of sleep or paralysis inducing attacks.

Christ, I spent way too much time defending a Pokemon...

No, I spend too much time bashing a Pokemon >_>

Mega Punch and Mega Kick are not fighting type attacks, and Seismic Toss does a set amount of damage. The only decent fighting moves Charizard can learn are Brick Break and Focus Punch.

And whilst Charizard takes no damage from ground attacks, he takes 4 times the damage from Rock, which most physical pokemon can learn the most powerful technique of. He also takes double damage from Water and Electric, two of the more common Special types.

Now let's take a look at his stats, his highest stat is his Special Attack, unfortunately, he can only learn special moves consisting of Fire and Dragon, not alot of mixing up you can do there. His weakest stats are his HP and Defense, leaving him totally open to those Rock attacks I was talking about earlier. And then there's his Attack, his second weakest stat, even with a prefered nature its maximum will not exceed 300. The problem lies within the fact that Charizard has a plethora of Physical Attacks, and needs to use moves such as Belly Drum, Swords Dance and Dragon Dance to raise its attack power.

In short, I have no life, being an experienced Netbattler. Thank you for your time, and I hope you disregard any hard feelings I've had >_>

Honestly, why the fuck is Mega Punch and Mega Kick a normal attack? Also I thought Seismic Toss does double damage to rock Pokemon even though its one of those level = damage.

Quick note: I've only recently started playing Pokemon again (because of Diamond/Pearl looking so awesome) and even then, I've only played through Leaf Green and a little bit of Sapphire so excuse my readily apparent ignorance at this stuff. I thought about trying netbattle but figured I'd try filling up my Pokedex first rather then dealing with that later since D/P are online anyways.

And don't worry, I'm perfectly ok being put in my place for knowing jack shit about the advanced parts of Pokemon. I was the type of guy back in the day who loaned out my Pokemon Blue cart to someone much more dedicated then me to get a complete Pokedex.

so. basically, as final evolutions, we'll have a flaming monkey, a lichen-covered turtle, and a big penguin... as excited as i am about the game, the excitement doesnt carry over to this generations starters :p

I duno... the monkey's final form has potential to be bad ass. A gorilla on fire? I'm almost sold. Unless they act retarded and make him like an orangutang or some other lame primate. I have mixed feelings about the penguin, but I'll probably pick him because I have a soft spot for penguins. And that turtle.... well, he just looks lame. If I get stuck with the turtle somehow, I'm drowning him in a fucking well.

And from reading the previous posts, I had no idea Pokemon was so stats based. I just chose the characters I thought were cool.

you are dealing with pokemon geeks here. Back about...7 or 8 years ago when red and blue were out, My friends would battle seriously. And when I mean seriously, they had a team of 6 level 100 Mewtwos pumped with Steroids via Cloning technique...Cheapasses

Hmm, I had no idea Pokemon had such a strong following. When me and my friends would battle(we were in fourth grade at the start and sixth grade towards the end) we would get serious about which Pokemon sucked and which rocked, but noone had 6 Mewtwos at level 100... That's kinda excessive.

...ok maybe i exxagerated a but much, but it was pretty damn close to that. Middle school video game geeks had nothing better to do than to raise their pokemon.

Yeah, it was like that in my middle school as well. But how about them kids that were such assholes about it "OmG my Pokemon can pwn j00r pokemon with 2 attacks". They didn't really talk like that, but they might as well have.
