Dimebag Darrell (formerly) of Pantera MURDERED!

That sucks sooo bad. Dimabag was really talented. I only have one Pantera album, though I love it. This makes me want to buy more (regardless of the whole fallout with Anselmo - I do have the DOWN album and it's pretty good).
I seriously started weeping this morning after I dropped my sister off at school. I turned on the radio, and the first thing I hear is one of Dime's close friends talking about how surreal the night has been and how upset Vinnie is. I just broke down, I couldn't help it.

I've never cried about a celebrity before. But this is different. This guy was our neighbor. He was a good guy. He was a funny guy. Every cop in this town has a Dime story. This is going to be a very long day. The fact that the sun is shining is making this so much harder to bear. Don't ask me why, but when I got up this morning and saw the sun shining, it made me think of Darrell. What I wouldn't give to be able to talk to Vinnie. I can't imagine my life without my sister. Sad day for this town.
You aint the only one, brother. I fell asleep crying. And same here. Ive never cried over a celebrity, either.

My friend was at the the show last night, he came to work all shook up. He told me that he was really close to the stage. He said that they was only fourty-seconds into the set, and the guy just came out blasting. The police took statments from all of them.He also was quoted in thelocal paper. Man I can belive this, I used to listen to Cowboys from Hell before every football game in high school. I am just glad the fat fuck that did this is dead. I hope his soul never rest. As for Dimebag god be with his family and friends. RIP Dimebag

Straight from the Damageplan website. I have it as my desktop now.

This is some very sad news. I was already ill before I heard this, and this just makes me feel even worse.

RIP Dimebag, and to the other victims of this horrible tragedy. To those who were injured, I wish you a speedy and full recovery.

R.I.P. Dimebag Darell, you rocked my car and home for many years. Sad to see you go. May all the victims of yesterday's tragic night R.I.P except for that fuck that caused all of this, hope he rotts in hell.

Dimebag was soooooo talented. He would make his guitar create sounds that I never knew a guitar could make. He knew how to shred too! This is an incredible loss.

There are so many no-talents that are out there making headlines that it makes me sick. Dimebag was the real deal

Strange coincidence, but I was just thinking earlier this week how today would be the 24th anniversary of John Lennon's murder in NYC, 9Dec1980. Now this.

Hell yeah, he was a real inspiration to me when I was learning to play guitar over a decade ago. Without his music I'd never be able to progress to a new level.

Lennon was shot on the same day as Dimebag, 24 years between.. Dec. 8th 1980.

Some people who knew Nathan "Nate" Gale said Thursday that the heavy metal music fan had a quick temper.

Gale, 25, was the man who police said shot and killed four people inside the Alrosa Village nightclub Wednesday night.

A Columbus police officer who was called to the scene shot and killed Gale as he was holding a hostage, authorities said.

Gale was a 1998 Marysville High School graduate and lived in an apartment in downtown Marysville, NBC 4's Holly Hollingsworth reported.

He served in the United States Marine Corps from February 2002 through November 2003, but did not serve his full term, Hollingsworth reported. The USMC would not give the circumstances of his discharge, Hollingsworth reported.

While some in the community said Gale had a quick temper, others said he was a good-natured person.

Mikayla Weitzenecker, who works at Maggie's Restaurant in Marysville, said Gale was in the restaurant this week and said he loved children.

"He always played with the little ones when he was in here," Weitzenecker said. "He was just a real gentle guy. He seemed like a big old teddy bear to me. I never would have thought what made him do that."

Erin Halk

One of the shooting victims grew up in Upper Arlington, NBC 4's Elizabeth Scarborough reported.

Erin Halk, 29, graduated from Upper Arlington High School and served in the United States Marine Corps.

He was working at music venues throughout Columbus and was setting up stages for bands and working security. He was working at the Damageplan concert at Alrosa Villa, Scarborough reported.

Police said that once the band began playing, Gale jumped onto the stage and began firing a handgun at band members and into the crowd. Halk was one of four people who were killed by Gale, police said.

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott

3985281_200X150.jpg

"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was the lead guitarist for the band, Damageplan, and was shot several times, police said.

He and his bandmate, brother Vinnie, grew up in Texas, as part of a musical family. At a very young age, Abbott displayed a unique talent for the guitar, winning numerous local competitions and becoming a familiar face on the Dallas music scene.

Darrell and Vinnie would get national fame with the formation of the hard-driving, heavy metal band Pantera, NBC 4's Andy Dominianni reported.

During the 1990s, Pantera's legion of loyal fans exploded into a massive cult following.

"They were one of the most hardcore bands out there," fan Justin Adcock said. "They don't whine about stuff. They talk about being strong and to me, that's what real heavy metal should be about."

The band's explosive sound racked up multiple Grammy Award nominations and heavy metal awards. A rumored dispute with their record label, and reported infighting among band members, led to group's 2003 breakup.

"Dimebag Darrell" and Vinnie were already involved in a new project, another heavy metal band called Damageplan. The four-member band was on the final leg of their national tour when they arrived for their ill-fated performance at Alrosa Villa.

Other Victims

Police identified one of the shooting victims as Nathan Bray, 23, of Grove City, who was in the audience. Jeff Thompson, 40, from Texas, was later identified as the fifth shooting victim.

This was the band's body guard who was shot trying to pull the gunner off Darrell. He once said he would take a bullet for Dime. He kept his word.

RIP Mayhem

Whoa.

Now that seriously makes me depressed. I mean, so often you hear people say things like that.. but damn.

Some people have commented..

As word of Dimebag's death rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.

"I'm speechless," former Rob Zombie/ Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob Blasko Nicholson said. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a f---ing legend and this is total bullsh--."

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman and former Damageplan tour partner Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

"Let's for a second forget that I even knew him, [and focus on] just the fact that this was allowed to happen," Slipknot singer Corey Taylor said. "If somebody can jump onstage with a gun and shoot one of the most influential guitarists of my generation, what's next? If this is allowed to happen, what the hell? What does that say? Just that somebody would think this was a good idea in his own insane world, what does that say about where we're at right now? It's definitely given me pause. I'm an entertainer as well as a musician, so I have to look at this and think not only has one of my really good friends died, but what if that had been me?"

Damageplan also features Dimebag's brother, former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul; singer Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.

I really, really want to hear what Phil has to say.
I wouldn't recommend you driving by it, Ledhed.. too sad..
I didn't even try. I was talking to Morbid earlier on AIM, telling him about how my friend (who lives barely a mile away) tried to. My friend couldn't even open the car door, knowing what he was going to see if he went. You can feel it in the air right now around here. You can tell things won't be the same.

This also means that everytime I go to a show now, there's gonna be extra security, and it will take longer to get in. They already do this at concerts like Warped Tour and Ozzfest, where they make you empty your pockets, search your purse/backpack, and pat you down.

As they should. If it means noone has to die as senselessly as Darrell did, I'll let them check whatever they want.

I agree. Its just that the smaller clubs dont search people and at the larger arenas they do. My friend said it only took him almost 2 hours to get into Ozzfest, and there were all kinds of knives taken from people at the gate. Not just pocket knives, but like 5 inch long blades and stuff. It makes me not want to go to any shows at smaller clubs now.

I just read this whole thread and it's just so sad. It really makes you teary eyed. I'm just so angry right now. I'm just so happy that that idiot shooter died. that's exactly what he deserved. What an attrocious act. Pantera is one of my favorite bands. I have nearly every one of their albums. I love Cowboys from Hell. They had some of the greatest guitar solos and riffs that I have ever heard. I was just getting into damageplan's stuff. This is just so sad. I'm shocked. R.I.P. Dimbag Darrell, you will always be missed.

I'm glad that they are taking extra security measures, as well. It's just horrifying to think that anytime I go to a show, I could end up dead. You shouldn't go to a show thinking, "I could die here tonight."

That sick bastard shooter has robbed us of a great musician and a great person. Also, there are families out there who lost loved ones due to this tragedy. Truly sad. :(

One of the witnesses recounts that Dimebag was still playing and probably didn't even know what hit him when he fell over.

At least DD went out happy, doing what he loved most.

R.I.P.

When I went to Ozzfest in 2003, I never had to pull out anything in my pockets and I was never searched or anything. It was a quick process to get in. Though it wasn't an arena, so that might be why. I do agree that everyone should be patted down or searched, so that they can keep things like this from happening.

I was watching the local news tonight and they said Patrick Lachman (Damageplan's vocalist) used to live in the Portland area.

I picked this up on blabbermouth:

several people that have had conversations with Dimebag's former PANTERA bandmate, singer Philip Anselmo (currently in SUPERJOINT RITUAL), early this morning are reporting that the frontman is "devastated" by the news of Dimebag's death.

Also, some good news:

None of the other DAMAGEPLAN bandmembers were hurt in the Columbus, Ohio shooting incident that resulted in the death of the group's guitarist, Dimebag Darrell, a source close to the band has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET.

I'm relieved to hear that, but still, it's horrible that anyone died that night, let alone get injured. :(

R.I.P. Dimebag and the other victims. My heart goes out to everyone affected by this tradegy.

Hell, Led. I wouldn't be able to drive by it either. I'd start bawling if I did.

Like I said in the OTT, I went to walmart today, and they were pblaring Pantera. Fitting tribute to a metal god.

That says a lot if Wal-Mart plays Pantera. a LOT.

My station played "Cemetary Gates" tonight, it was one of the only songs they could play. I've never heard them play Pantera for the 7 years that I've listened to the station.

Yeah. Pantera was loved by a lot of people. We went to the car stereos and heard Pantera blaring there too. I geuss one of our statios is doing a tribute to Dimebag.

I told you Phil would be upset... imagine getting into a fight with someone who is practically your brother, and him dying before you got a chance to make up.

It was not his time to go...

Well I didn't think Phil had it in him.

The only Pantera songs I've ever heard the local hard rock station play are the cover of Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," "Walk," and "Cowboys From Hell," and out of those, "Planet Caravan" gets played the most. They also played "Revolution Is My Name" a bit when "Reinventing The Steel" was released. I'm not sure if they did anything special today since I never listen to the radio anymore.

Yesterday was the first time I've listened to syndicated radio in well over 3 years, and it was for the express purpose of hearing the local rock station's Dime tribute. The one I'm really looking forward to is on saturday night when the public radio station's Metal show plays. I know it's going to be solid Pantera and Damageplan the whole time.

I was so mad the night after the shooting, I was watching my local news (Orlando) and they start the story with the number of people killed and then they completly shifted the story to "Lets see how our local venues are going to prevent this from happening. The did not even give the bands name, no referrence to Pantera and did not even Say Dimebags Name or the status of the other band members!!!! This is complete shit, man I hate the news.

One thing I can't believe is that the supposedly "xtreme" radio station here did no, absolutely no tribute to Pantera or Damageplan. It angers me so much. This and also that they barely play any nirvana/anything remotely good and that on Kurt's anniversary they didn't do any tribute either. Oh well, I barely listen to them anyway. At least the other true rock radio station played tribute the whole day with a few songs here and there. well actually more than just a few songs (they played a whole album for an hour and a half) but they tried to spread it out some instead of just the same stuff. I'm still sad. :(

Damageplan Talk of the Tragedy - Vinnie Paul, the Band, and Atlantic Records Issue Official Statements

As has been widely reported in the media, Elektra/Atlantic recording group DAMAGEPLAN suffered a horrible tragedy at their show in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed, as was the band’s head of security, Jeffrey “Mayhem” Thompson, an employee of the club, Erin Halk, and a member of the audience, Nathan Bray. Chris Paluska, a member of the band’s management team who was serving as tour manager, was shot and is in critical but stable condition. John “Kat” Brooks, the band’s drum tech, was also shot and is being released from the hospital today.

DAMAGEPLAN made the following statements today:

“With all his greatness and accomplishments on the guitar, DIME will be missed more for his giving personality, charisma, caring for others, love and most of all his HEART!! Twice as big as the state of TEXAS!!!!!!!!!!!! DIME gave it all everyday to each and every one of us and our lives have forever been hollowed without him...Thanks to all of you for reaching out to us in this time of our immeasurable loss. REST IN PEACE BROTHER DIME!!!!!!”

- DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul, brother of Dimebag Darrell

“Jeffrey "Mayhem" Thompson was not just a true part of the DAMAGEPLAN family, but part of the whole Dallas music scene. He was friend to all, with a great personality. He bent over backward to help us all with his trademark phrases like "What can I do for you sir?" and "Coming up!" He also stated his willingness to protect us, saying "I'd take a bullet for ya," and unfortunately did in defense of our lives. He truly lived and died for his friends and made the ultimate sacrifice, giving his life to save ours. For this we will never forget. You will be missed big man.”

- the DAMAGEPLAN family

To reiterate a statement issued by the bands label yesterday, Atlantic Records released the following:

“We are shocked and saddened by these horrible and senseless shootings. This is a tragic event for the music community, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the surviving members of DAMAGEPLAN and their crew. Dimebag Darrell was an exceptional musician and an extraordinary person. Along with his brother and bandmate, Vinnie Paul, he was a member of the Elektra/Atlantic family for the past 14 years, and he will be deeply missed. The bravery displayed by DAMAGEPLAN, their crew, their fans, and the local police will never be forgotten.”
