Disc Load Clicking Noise

It's strange, but when I load up a PS2 or PSone disc on my PS2, I hear strange clicking noises. They're pretty loud and I worried that it was the sound of the disc being scratched, but the discs look flawless when they are removed. Has anyone else had this occur, and do you know what is causing the noise (IE the disc grazing something or the spindle jamming)?

my new 50001 does it sometimes...i think its just the disk reloading...like the spinner stopping and starting again

i dont know the technicalities of it, but i belive its normal

It's normal. It's really pronounced on the PSTwo, without the noisy fan and all.

If you;re getting a really loud "CLACK CLACK CLACK" sound, along with long waits for the loading of a game you may be about to suffer a DRE problem.

When the problem occured in my system it sounded like somthign had snapped loose and was slaping against th einside of the case but it was just the laser,out of a lignment, hitting the end of its track while trying to read the disk.

I hope it's not the case but if it is you can likely get it fixed for free.

i have that problem for my gamecube. only a few of my games. i dont rmember which.

It's definitely the loud one... I don't really care if the PS2 goes, I just wanted to make sure it's nothing "clacking" against the discs.

Be careful. When mine makes the noise, it's scratching up the disc. I'll have to send mine to Sony for repairs soon.

yea mine does that too..but i havent done anything to my ps2...no pets to ruin it, no dropping it, no nothing...

Weird, it's been doing it since june actually, and not one scratched disc yet... I'm probobly just going to buy a pstwo and use one for online and the other for games.

EDIT - I noticed some of my games have a weird, circular-patterned film over them, generally the ones I play more often than not... perhaps my laser-eye is dirty?

If anyone reads this, does leaving a disc inside the ps2 promote a residue to develop on the bottom of the dvd?

no it's never done that for me. The "clack" sound was always explained to me as the head banging against the inside of the system, never making contact with the disk... but you make want to check the drive tray and makesure there isnt something on that.

I'd definatly call Sony's consumer service number first before plunking down 150 more bucks on a new system. even if you did a trade in (and assuming they dont check your system before excepting it, it's still a savings to make sure it's not elligable for a free repair first.)

I definitely think the residue is from leaving the games inside the console... because it's heaviest on games I left in the console for days.

Then I'd definatly check the drive tray, though I couldnt tell you exactly what to look for.

this really should be in the ps2 repair thread, it is your laser trying to focus the click is the laser moving up and down. It is trying to focus the laser on the disc. If it gets too bad the laser will actually begin scartching your discs because it will get too close when trying to focus and make contact with the underside of the disc. It could be 2 things:
1. your laser is dirty try cleaning it with compressed air and a DVD lens cleaner or take it apart and clean the laser with a q-tip and rubbing alchol.

2. your laser is beginning to fail. places have lasers for sale if you want to do it yourself. or you can adjust the laser intensity.
