Do longtime Capcom fans have a future with Capcom?

For those of you who have grown up with Capcom as a favorite video game company, you may have particularly been concerned over the direction Capcom has been going in over the past year.

This year alone, Capcom has made numerous public snafus with the direction of multiple series, alienating groups of longtime fans and supporters over several franchises.

So, list time:

*Mega Man Universe (odd art direction, gimmicks regarding heroes from other series, canceled)

*Mega Man Legends 3 (longtime demanded reboot to series canceled for "not enough support", even after initially telling fans "don't worry, you can watch from the sidelines")

*Remaining Mega Man Series:
Last Original - Mega Man 10 - Mar 2010 - Weaker sales compared to MM9 has likely reshelved the original series.
Last X - Mega Man X8 - Dec 2004 - Poor recovery following the mishandled MMX7 has also left this series collecting dust in the attic.
Last Zero - Mega Man Zero 4 - Oct 2005 - Considered to be a decent series overall, this series was wrapped up in the final installment.
Last ZX - Mega Man ZX Advent - Oct 2007 - Series receives average ratings, currently on hiatus.
Last Battle Network - Mega Man Battle Network 6 - Jun 2006 - Rated in the 60s, this is the final installment of the BN series.
Last Star Force - Mega Man Star Force 3 - Jun 2009 - Rated in the 60s, currently on hiatus.

*Devil may Cry (Originally stated to be a reboot of the series with new gameplay and character design, causing a fan uproar. Recent trailers revealed the gameplay to be the same but the character to remain changed to his new "emo" form.)

*Resident Evil Revelations (Longtime fans of the survival horror series are greeted in a new trailer by a set of breasts, ridiculous hairstyles, and torn swimsuits (Onechanbara?). Capcom later backpedals and releases a second trailer killing off the new character, in what quite honestly could be considered a snuff film.)

*Marvel vs. Capcom / Street Fighter series: (Releasing DLC as a full retail game, hoping early adopting fans to double dip on buying the same game. Sorry Capcom, but in the 1990s releasing a "Roster Update" to retail was acceptable. Both you and EA need to cut this crap entirely.)

The additional Mega Man series aside, this year alone has revealed Capcom to be squandering their legacy franchises to the point where, as a fan (and as I buy and download Resident Evil 4 HD on the XBLA Marketplace), do I have a future as a customer with Capcom, or are those years behind me?

the EA "roster update" is adding players who've been drafted and tinkering statistics to match real life, which really isn't much work as there is no balance really necessary. if vick is top tier in football, he's broken in the video game too.

the Capcom "roster update" requires creation of new art and programming assets, as well as extensive balance and game play testing.

standalone disc was also very useful for people running tournaments; instead of having to update xboxes they could just buy the disc. anyone with a brain wouldn't "double dip." some people didn't buy SSF4.

as an example, when SC2 HotS comes out, i'm sure there will be an online delivery option as well as a box version. it's the same thing as capcom and SF.

many of the hardcore fighter fans are very happy with them. it's only the people who don't understand SF/MvC who are mad with them.

you also left out phoenix wright fans; edgeworth 2 is not being localized.

How about this one.

Breath of Fire: completely fucking ceased to exist.

It's like every single worker at Capcom wakes up in the morning and says, "You know that guy The Crotch? A new Breath of Fire game would be exactly the thing to get him back into JRPGs. fuck that guy, no new Breath of Fire."

I literally only have a problem with DmC and their lack of DLC support of MvC3. Now, my disappointment in them not making more DLC for MvC3 is not that I wish UMvC3 was DLC (I'm totally happy buying a new disc), I just wanted more costumes as DLC.

I am only going to comment on the Capcom fighting games part, because I could care less about anything else they put out.

For starts, it is up to Capcom what is dlc and what is not. Just because you or anyone else thinks it should be dlc and not a retail copy does not make it so. If you don't like they way they handle it, it is very simple do not buy it. No need to get upset, just don't buy it.

Not once, for any Capcom game has there just be a " roster " update. Now for the average player this may seem like it is the case but each update has gone into tweeking the game system and characters in that game. If such things are not important to you than there is no reason you or your friends should be buying each new version, when the first will be just as good.

Capcom has made and been apart of more fighting games than any other company out there, I think they have a much better grasp on what will not only make a great improvement to a game but also what the fighting game community wants as a whole. They are more active with in the community than any other developer I have seen.

For me, Capcom has a future with me. While I may not be sold on all their games I more than understand how it can pay off. We had 3 games that where average at best before we got MvC2. We went though a whole bunch of shit before we got 3s. Not ever game they put out is going to be great, but I can at least tell they are trying and that is important to me.

I'll continue to purchase games from capcom. I understand their present business model and I'll just be more mindful of what I'm buying and when I'm buying from them.

I feel like there's two conflicting things here...are you disappointed that it looked like shit or that it got cancelled? Good riddance to a crummy looking game I say.

*Mega Man Legends 3 (longtime demanded reboot to series canceled for "not enough support", even after initially telling fans "don't worry, you can watch from the sidelines")
If it's a financial risk then does it not make sense to dump the project? I don't think "c'mon, be cool" carries as much sway in a boardroom as it might when trying to get your friend to pay for your drink.

*Devil may Cry (Originally stated to be a reboot of the series with new gameplay and character design, causing a fan uproar. Recent trailers revealed the gameplay to be the same but the character to remain changed to his new "emo" form.)
I still don't get gamers on this... when Dante looked like a Swedish jock we liked him, but now that he actually kinda looks like a gamer we don't like him? Granted I'm not in love with it either; in my perfect world Dante would look more like Sawyer from Lost, but I'll take emo douche Dante over corny, pizza-scarfing Dante any day.

In RE3, Jill wore a miniskirt and a tube top. She looked like a prostitute.

I find it more acceptable now than I did in the 90s.... there's alot more on the line these days: games cost more to develop and maintain, the interest in japanese games has declined a bit and the used games market is affecting publishers and developers. I also don't get why MvC3 gets so much flack for this when there are other games that do the same thing.

Speaking of snuff films, I wonder what ever happened to Rockstar's Manhunt series. I never did play the second game in that series on PS2/Xbox.

Anyway, aren't you forgetting Resident Evil Mercenaries on 3DS, which had only one save file that you couldn't delete?

As for Capcom I've known that they pull this re-releasing crap since the 16 bit era, so them releasing 'reboots' and downloadable versions of games doesn't surprise me at all.

Well, at least Capcom is also introducing new IP's at this point in the current console generation. I think Asura's Wrath and Dragon's Dogma both look really interesting. And I'd pick up the Monster Hunter HD game for PS3 if they brought it over here, having never tried the series.

Before we get carried away, I think it's worth keeping in mind that Capcom is the Japanese developer most likely to have at least 1 or 2 high quality new series ready for the next generation, whether you define that as the WiiU in 2012 or the new Xbox and Playstation in (probably) 2013.

Maybe the reason the old IP's are getting farmed out to various developers is because their core teams are working on the new stuff.

They still make great games - don't get me wrong, but they're not the Capcom they were during the days of the Dreamcast, that's for sure. I don't think we're gonna get another Power Stone from them, but they're doing ok revitalizing Street Fighter and Marvel Vs. Capcom.

Capcom used to be my favorite company by a mile. I think back to the late 90's to early 2000's and man... they were dominating arcades, Resident Evil was at its peak, they introduced the then-awesome Devil May Cry, the Mega Man X series was still going strong, we got Rockman & Forte, and even their sorta second-tier titles like Onimusha were fantastic. They really fostered creativity back then despite their emphasis on sequels.

Now? I'm frankly not excited about anything they announce.

Capcom is more of a publishing company than a developer now. All they make is Monster Hunter games for Japan and SF games.

Resident Evil is the only franchise from them I've continued to play for years now. I don't even know why I bought MVC3 since I never play fighting games anymore.

I'll still hit them up for fighting games and HD remakes. Aside from that, they're ruining all of their old IPs, and I refuse to give them money to validate those decisions. If any of you are tired of outsourcing to terrible Western devs, please don't buy the game. And if you must, please buy it used.

RE5 was pretty good it just looked bad compared to RE4 which would apply to 99.9% of games. I never liked DMC and I kind of got tired of Mega Man after MMV. SF4 and MvC seem OK although the multiple releases are annoying (but that has been going on with them and fighting games since the beginning of time). I guess I'm just hoping that the next proper RE game (RE6?) is better than RE5.

It looked really bad compared to RE4. That's really my only gripe with Capcom these days -- but both RE5 and DmC, while huge letdowns, doesn't really get me all up in arms about the developer. I'm used to seeing old favorites change with the time, some are directed towards new audiences, some are just bad.

I assume they'll make another good game eventually. Right now their fighters are where it's at.

I think trakan us right when he says resident evil five is a really good game and would get near the hate if it was called something else. I think I out something like sixty hours into the game and it was really fun everytime I played it.

Not really a Capcom game but Asura's Wrath is the only decent thing coming out of Capcom in the next two years.

But it was much worse than RE4, so it's hard to get excited about the positive aspects when they are just a step back. It's not even like other franchises where fans are upset that they changed the direction of the games -- RE5 was built exactly like RE4. Boss for boss, encounter for encounter, it was flatly lacking in comparison.

Was it a solid game? Sure. But what kind of compliment is that? It's why everyone was blown away by Dead Space when it came out because even that game, with all of its flaws, was head and shoulders above what Capcom gave us with RE5.

I'm excited for Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney and Monster Hunter 3G and 4 for the 3DS (assuming they come out in America).

I'm also still interested in Street Fighter X Tekken.

Also, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective was a fantastic game that came out from Capcom this year.

Pretty much this.

Also their "let's farm everything out to other developers!!" approach has weakened them. I don't even consider them a developer anymore.

To answer the original question, not really. I was a long time fan but no new breath of fires, perceived gouging on SFIV, MvC3 and Dead Rising will hurt. Also I wanted Monster Hunter Online for the 360 in America. And while I'm happy about Dead Rising 2 w/ Frank West, I feel it should have been that in the first place. I'm also glad I waited for MvC3 because I felt the original roster was too light.

I don't know...Mega Man has kind of been on thin ice for a long time. They made SO many Mega Man games that I think a lot of people just stopped caring. I guess 9 and 10 were cool but I had more fun playing the remakes on the PSP of 1 and X then the new 8-bit games. We all know that Capcom ditched Mega Man since Inafune left anyway.

Fighting games...I don't mind the updates...SSFIV felt like a nice leap from vanilla and I've gotten a lot of hours played on that more so than any other game right now so I can't complain.

DMC - I was never a fan of the original series and I'm looking forward to the reboot...I liked Heavenly Sword and the under appreciated Enslaved so I think Ninja Theory will do a good job. Hopefully they will get rid of those static backgrounds which annoyed the hell out of me in DMC4.

I guess what I'm saying is for now I'm still a fan of Capcom's stuff.

Looking forward to Ultimate Marvel since I didn't buy the first one and Street Fighter X Tekken as well.
People stopped caring about mega man? Since when?
I don't think I ever really cared about mega man.

MML is the only franchise that was a spin off that was done right. All this MM X stuff was pretty shitty after the 2nd one.

Capcom will continue to be at the forefront of the competitive fighting scene for the foreseeable future.

Tekken, MK, blazblu, etc are good games but they just don't have the spotlight like capcom's games do.

I think they're retooling DmC based on the fan response. They have been kind of quiet on it and I expect it'll turn out to be a fine game after all the whining from people who would whine no matter what.

I hate that they cancelled Mega Man Legends 3, but it's just one of those casualties to the "hit or fail" way that things are going. I love MML but I admit it probably would have been a money sink to make a third one.

MM X was good up until X6 which is when the series just went really downhill.
