Do you Hate your Job?

Recently I've put a lot of thought into my job. I just want to know if I really work at a crap place, or if this is just what jobs are like. Here it goes:

What I Do
- Bag groceries at a local grocery store
- Ocasionally go into the back of the store and help stock shelves

OK. That was really basic. Now I'm going to go into why I hate it:

The Pay Sucks
$6.00/hour. It could be worse...but really, not by much. Oh! But we get a whopping $.50 raise every year! :roll:

The Tasks Suck
I'm 18 and the majority of the time I spend is bagging groceries. Now, have you ever bagged groceries? A monkey could do it. Honestly. A monkey could do it right and successfully. More or less you keep edibles and non-edibles together, put meat in it's own bag and keep it light enough so the handles can support the weight. It's such grunt work and I feel so idiotic doing such thought-less work.

The Hours Suck
Here's my weekend:
4-10 Friday
5-11 Saturday (PM)
2-7 Sunday

I have a 1:00 AM curfew. There go my friday and saturday nights. Yeah, maybe friday I might be able to go out and do something, but I've been up since 8:00 AM because of school, and I'm too drained to do anything phsyical.

That's a typical schedule. I usually get scheduled FRI-SAT-SUN-MON, and then random days for the rest of the week.

The Store Sucks
This place is packed. Always. OK, save from about 8 or 9 at night until close, it's always just racing with business. We have upwards to 7 or 8 grocery stores in my town, but I swear, half of our town shops at this store. Two reasons it sucks when it's busy:
a) It means that there's no chance I'll get to go to the back and do some semi-decent work (stocking)
b) It means there's going to be an insurmountable amount of work to be done...if we're in the pack, you do X amount of work. Get done early? Then bum around.

The Staff Sucks
My manager is a pussy. He won't say anything to your face. If he's got a problem, he'll tell someone below him to say it to you. I hate people like him. He's got no balls.

Most of my coworkers are lazy. Except for a specified time (two hours during the typically busiest portion of the day), only one bag boy has to be up front bagging. That means that even if it's as busy as it was during those two rush hours, I'm still alone up there working as if I'm being payed $10.00 an hour. Yes, I could have one of the checkers call more guys up, but their lazy asses will bag an order or two then go to the back again.

I sit up front, get a huge amount of work thrown on my shoulders while everyone else goes and chills around, working at whatever pace they feel like. Done this shit for 6 months now and I'm really getting sick of it.

Now Wha?
Can I get some suggestions as to where to try and find a new job? I actually put in my two weeks once before, but I asked if I could keep working there, because I needed money (I'm in high school, but I'm saving up for a computer, MLB Extra Innings, and a car), and because i didn't hear back from any of the 4 applications I put in elsewhere. Plus, I thought if I got hired somewhere I would have just been a month-or-two seasonal.

I hate this place and really want to quit. Am I a pussy that's just bitching (my dad said he's 'proud' that I've stuck it out so far at a place I dislike so much), or do I have a genuine above-average shitty ass job?

Here's an idea, go work in a kitchen for a few days, if you can handle it for that long and I bet by the end of your 3rd shift you'll be begging to go back and work baggin groceries.

All managment sucks. Alls it takes to be a manager is to be the biggest suck up OR be there long enough were the position falls into your lap.

Most coworkers are lazy. They have it figured out, you don't. They don't mind showing up, doing less than nothing and collection a check for it. For some people, this is all life is, work, eat, sleep. And they're happing doing so, you're not. That's life. Someday you'll have a job where YOU are the one people call lazy because you just don't give a shit about a place.

Your old man is right to be proud of you, there are some kids that get their hand held all thru life but your pops just wants to make sure you don't become "one of them" but you do need to step it up a bit and shit of get off the pot. Find a new job and STFU.

He's right. Kitchen drudge is vastly worse than the bottom of the supermarket ladder.

Where are you that pays so little? The stores out here are so thoroughly unionized that you can't get hired to run a pushbroom down the aisles for less than $12 and hour to start. Since I'm annoyingly between position in my preferrred field of employment I'd be perfectly happy to take up bagging again just to keep the bills at bay while waiting for something better to come along. I did it for a while during the strike in 2003 and it was far from the worst job I ever had.

I realize it sounds like I'm bitching. I'm just really pissed off. My weekend feels like a complete waste. I'm just bumming around the house waiting for work to come by.
 
I dont hate my job that much. I work at my dad's store, and I get to use the computer when we aren't busy (Like right now), but I am thinking about getting a job at Best Buy this summer because I would enjoy it more, and I would use my employee discount often.
 
eh, i don't hate my job, i just don't like it. i'm a cashier at Sears, $6.75 an hour, and about 15 hours a week. still in highschool, so very limited hours. the job is easy and all, just that, i'm getting tired of the same old, same old.
 
I sit around a chemistry lab and get payed to mock people, so I guess I love my job.

But I'll go with JimmieMac on this one, I worked in a kitchen for a summer. Basically it's really hot, steaming and you are constantly rushing around. In fact if you aren't rushing around the company probably isn't going to be in buisness much longer.

I don't know what you expect bro, you're 18, you want it to all be hot chicks and beer? It's called WORK for a reason, it's not called "fu(k around and enjoy yourself"

Every job has it's up and downs but while you're young and uneducated you have to do some pretty shitty jobs. That's the way it goes. Anyone over 21 will say the exact same thing.
 
Unless you know exactly what you want to do as a career, every job you have will suck for one reason or another. So the sooner you can get into that desired carreer the better. Sooner or later every job can/will suck the life out of you no matter how much money you make, because it reduces your life into a monotounous cycle of shit you really don't want to do, but know you have to or you'll be fired. So most everyone in the workforce does just enough work not to get fired. What makes matters worse is that if everyone actually DID what they were supposed to while on the job it would make everyone else's job that much easier, but that's not the way it works.

I work in an accounting office doing payroll and paying invoices, and one day I just hit the wall. I realized that EVERYTHING everyone in my office did generated more work for me. If someone orders office supplies, I have to pay the bill. If someone orders a piece of furniture I have to figure out how much that's gonna cost the company to rent it for the year. The fact that there are even people in the office working means that that I'm gonna have to process timecards to pay every one of them (myself included). I have a ton of responsiblity, and they pay me well for it, but the bottom line is that I just don't give a shit about any of it.

You need to figure out what you want to do as quickly as possible. Make sure that that job pays you the kind of money you want and gives the the smallest amount of headache that you can handle. Don't go to college unless you need to for the job you want (work exerience is just as valuable as fancy book learning), and if you do go to college, go for the information and not for the shitty piece of paper that they hand you after spending $80,000 of your money. My fiance has a masters degree and makes less money than I do, and I dropped out of college midway through. Go figure?

I have one friend who works a till at a car dealership. They also do car repairs. He says he gets maybe half a dozen people that come in each time he works. The rest of the time he sits playing online games.

A couple buddies of mine also stock pop. They only work weekend mornings, get paid $8 (plus mileage), and can work at whatever pace they want. Their boss also more or less encourages them to lie about how many hours they worked. He'll say, "Seems like you guys should've taken longer than that. Add a couple hours." They can go on lunch anytime they want. If they've got a dentist appointment, they get paid for gong to it if it's during working hours. (This would be on a weekday when they're doing it during the summer.)

No, I'm not expecing booze and girls. I'm just expecting a decent job. All I know is I dread going to my job. Once again, the reason I made this topic was to see if jobs do suck across the board and situations like my friends have are rarities, or if some people can actually go to work and not neccessarily enjoy it, but at least be comfortable with it.
 
6.75 is the minimum wage here in CA, and I think that already pathetic. I can't believe other states are lower than that, it's sickening. It's like slave wages. I guess we have money for bombs, but not the hard working-class Americans.

Retail work sucks... I've worked at Sears and Walmart and I hated it. I had a job as a librarian. I sat on my ass all day and played online. Maybe once an hour somone would bring a book or need help with the computers. I ot paid $8/hr and I still didn't like it. I hated the thought of just wasting all my time and not doing anything worth while.

My favorite job was doing tree trimming and landscaping. I got to be outside and exercise a lot. Travelled around the state and every week was a different place.

Right now I'm a PC field tech. I just started, but I think itll be fun. I like solving problems and going to new places.

You just need to find something you like.
 
All jobs suck. Just make sure you are getting paid as much as you can if you are going to hate it. $6.00 an hour is shit. I wouldn't play video games for a living for $6.00 an hour let alone real work. Find something new that pays better.

The good thing is that you are 18 so there is still time. Go to college. Study HARD. Get good grades and think about grad school (an almost necessity nowadays). Go there. Study HARD. With good grades at a good school you should be able to find something decent. Of course this doesn't help your current stuation but it's something to think about...

Depends on the field you want to work. In the computer biz you can't get a decent job without experience, and you really cant get experience without a degree. The only reason I went to college was because noone would hire me without te paper. Hell, I had a hard time finding a decent job with my degree.
 
I'm retail, and management. I have a degree.

I rather enjoy my job, the pay is good, work isn't too difficult, but yet challenging. I made it into management not by sucking up, but by creating results.

I find the most satisfying job is one in which you actually EARN your paycheck. My employees are commissioned, I did payroll today and they made between $12 and $16 per hour.
 
Now for general saying, if you hate your job because it doesn't suit your needs and doesnt make enought money, its pretty much your fault. Look, the process isn't too complicated. You get born, you goto school, you study hard, you get into a good school, you shape your future, you goto college, you get your job.

BTW, this isn't pointed at anyone in particular.

ALSO: Don't say "well, if your born into a poor family then you can't goto a good college" because you don't have to goto an IvyLeague college and if your truly smart you will get a scholarship.
 
By the way...Did I mention that I'm a senior in high school? A lot of you are mentioning college. The job I'm at (or if I go someplace else) is nothing long-term, it's just something to both have spending money/save up for college and crap.

I remember reading about something like FedEx ground was hiring. You had to be 18, though. I just turned 18 in August, so I missed out on it. But my horizons definitely have broadened since I became an adult, so I guess if I look hard there's bound to be something that doesn't pay like ass and that doesn't require you to do such measely work.

Yeah but California in most areas is one of the more expensive states in which to live. (Grew up in Thousand Oaks myself.) Pick a newspaper from someplace like Topeka, Kansas and see what price they're getting for houses, purchase or rental. A person just holding on to lower middle class status in Southern California can live much better in many other regions if he can manage the same income while living there.

For programming a degree is needed unless you have an impressive portfolio. But tech jobs have the dodge of certifications which count more on a resume than a CS degree. Network admins have more in common with plumbers in terms of educational needs than they do with programmers.

Trust me, they are probably going to be hiring over the summer because of the turnaround. If not, there is always UPS, at least they help pay for school.

I hope no one thinks that I'm trying to turn the boy off of school. My point was for him to figure out what he ultimately wants to do then figure out if college is a necessity. There's no point in spending a ton of money on a degree if the line of work he chooses doesn't require one. I work as an accountant for TV shows and no one I have ever met in my field has an accounting degree. It's just not needed. What we do is so far removed from what other accountants in other fields do and there are really no classes for it. So why waste 4-5 years getting a piece of paper, and accumulating debt in student loans, when you could already be working towards your goal?

I worked at a grocery store, and am now working a desk job for a large company. I get paid more to do far less, and yes, it's better than shagging product.

You'll get to where you need to be, just set your goals high and remember that working at a grocery store is "only temporary". Alot of people say that, but you really have to believe it and make sure that you aren't there for years and years.

I'll say this.

Having the worst job in the world and being able to pay for things yourself is INFINATELY better than having your parents buy you everything. I hate the kids who drive up to school in a shiny new Benz and hear that it was a birthday present. I drive a shitty Oldsmobile, but you know what? I paid for it completely by myself, and I'm the one that keeps it insured.

You're building character, don't feel too bad. But like I said, make sure you plan a future, and make sure that the supermarket isn't it.
 
I think a huge problem with the world is that not enough people enjoy their work. The belief that "all jobs suck" is mostly just an excuse. This attitude is something that I've never understood.

I love my job and I take pride in it. The managment is excellent, my coworkers are all competant, and I honestly, honestly look forward to going into work almost every single day.
 
You sound like you work pretty hard...and if you can work hard baggin' groceries you'll find good work eventually. Keep sending in the applications and you'll find something that fits. Until then, consider college long and hard.
 
I work as a US Postal Service clerk. I make about $18 an hour. The work itself isn't bad at all, though the general incompetence with which the place is run is quite annoying. The randomness of my hours is a pain too. Since I am not a "regular" they basically get to screw around with my hours all they want. In the 3+ years I have been doing this job I have gone 7 or more days without a day off many many times. I once went 26 days straight between days off. This includes Sundays. Even though there is no mail delivery on Sundays we still get a truck full of mail that has to be sorted. Nowadays I usually get 1 day off a week, though not always. I usually start at 2:30AM. On Mondays it's 1:30AM. Though depending on who is on vacation it can vary. I have started my tour everywhere from 12:30AM-9AM since I have been working here.

I'm officially a part-timer, though I work full-time hours. The worst part of my job is that the only other part-timer is a total loser who A) Calls out sick to go partying all night a LOT B) Goes home whenever she feels like it and C) When she bothers to come to work, doesn't actually do much work. So it falls on me to cover all the hours this idiot should be doing. The top supervisor covers for her which is what has prevented her from being fired to this point. Little does she know that for the past 18 months I have been keeping times and dates of her callouts (for example she called out sick 40 times last year), lateness, and doing stuff like going to Dunkin' Donuts on company time. Eventually I plan on giving this book to the Postmaster so he can check the records for himself.

Once I finish the last few classes for my degree I'm out of this place anyway but I'd like to take her down before I go.
 
My job isn't all bad, but I know I could do better. I work the overnight shift at Target and earn $9.25 per hour (would be $7.75 if I worked daytime). Still looking for that elusive IT tech job.
 
My job sucks complete arse. I walk from door to door selling paint jobs that will be done in the summer.

A) Feet hurt like hell after four hours of stomping through unpaved everything.

B) Morally the job sucks, because I know I hate it when people come to my door trying to sell stuff, but I'm forced to do this for little pay so my good for nothing sister can try to start up a business.
 
The thing I worry about is, when I look back on my life, will I think I contributed to the big picture, or will I think that I was worthless? I'm still in college, so I don't have to answer that question yet, but I think that it's important to at least keep that in mind. As life expectancies rise, you might just spend more time during retirement pondering that question.
 
i like my job a lot. i get paid 12$ an hour to be asisant manager at a hockey shop.

here is what i do in a given day....

- help customers as they come in, usually about one or two an hour

- while the store isnt busy, and there isnt any other work to be done... i play my ps2 and/or gc or xbox in the back room on the 13" tv we have back there

- if not playing video games i am either watching dvds or browsing thru CAG or the internet in general.

thats why i love my job

Only a handful of people will ever truely affect the whole world. If you want to be importanat you're probably going to end up disapointed... However, you can make small differences everyday. If you wanna be a prick when you want to go into a sore you can help make that person hate retail, conversely, if you're polite to everyone you meet you can help make their day better. Thats about the biggest influence most people will ever have.

So? It sucks. I live with my parents so I follow their rules. Yes, I've called them out on it and said it's ridiculous that I have a curfew, and should I choose to disobey it I won't be kicked out, but they'll stop giving me the little income they do. (I get money for lunch, my mom will ocassionally buy me crap if it's for school, etc)
 
I'm 18. I work at the Applebee's in Baltimore City. Needless to say, my co-workers aren't the most competant. But I like my job. I work there part-time, since I also go to school. I make $7.50/hour. My position is carside/to-go/carry-out but I do a lot more than that. I'm often found in the back preparing food or occasionally cooking. It's been busy lately, but before, we didn't have many orders I would constantly be helping everyone else on the team out. I've developed a reputation as a good worker, they've been talking about promoting me to work in the kitchen more... however I don't think my job will be as shitty as the other kitchen workers. I think they may even let me come and go as I please. :)
 
Bro, it's not the job that's getting you down. If you aren't a content and thankful person with your current job, the next one won't be significantly different. The cause of your unhappiness will be the same: your lack of thanks for getting a good job like that at 18. The sooner you can learn to be thankful for your job, your boss, your co-workers, and especially your father for raising you responsible and ready to work, the sooner you will enjoy your job wherever you are. The same goes with school, with relationships, with life. Just something for you to chew on when you're pissed off on a weekend.

My job sucks, too.

I am a busboy at a local fancy shmancy expensive retaurant. The only thing that really sucks are my shifts. I am in the same boat on you (OP) on this one. I am 17 (senior) and I have a 2:00am curfew. I work EVERY Friday 6-12 and Saturday 6-12. Then I also work 2 weekdays 6:30-11. I usually get there and just stand around and talk with my server friends for an hour. Then it starts to get a little busy. I am busy for a good 2 hours before it starts to slow down. I can leave eraly if I want and I'm usually anywhere from 10 min. to 30 min. late. Being late is no big deal though. I get paid $5.50/hr. plus tips. I usually make about $50-$60 in tips on a weekday and about $90-$110 on the weekends. So it averages out to be about $18-$20, most tax-free. Plus the owner usually gives me $20 if it's really busy and he thinks I'm working hard. And he also gave me a pretty fat Christmas bonus under the table. Also, sometimes the people that eat there give me $5 or $10 if I cater to them alot. A lady gave me $20 because she left her Louis Vuitton wallet on the booth. Another guy gave me $20 becuae he told me to find his glasses. Five minutes later and still no glasses, he gave me $20 and said 'thanks for the effort'. People there are very rich and very generous. So I guess the only thing that sucks is my schedule...
 
I work at Toys R Us, and I only make $6.50 an hour. I'm part of the morning crew (before the store opens), so I come in in the morning and stock the shelves with merch. I honestly think I dont get paid for what I do. I bust my ass for 5-6 hours a day and no one notices. And everyone is right, retail does suck. I have 6 bosses, 6. And if I screw up on something even a little I get bitched at by all 6. I fell like I work in an Office Space setting. And nine times out of ten, I dont get the memo.

And its not so much that I hate my job, its just that I wish I had better pay and better hours, right now Im topping out at 15 to 18 hours a week. I love the guests that come in and buy stuff, I love helping people I just hate everyone I work with.

I'm not certainly in school, I really have no clue what I want to do. But at the same time I dont want to spent a whole bunch of money on an education that I dont really need at the moment. I graduated from High School with pretty good grades. I just wish I could find a better job.
 
OP I work in a grocery store too. Except my jobs the opposite of yours. Im a dairy frozen stocker whos always called up to bag! MEh, least i get 6.50 an hr.
 
I really enjoy my job. I'm the assistant manager at EB Games, making $11 an hour. I work 5 days and 40 hours a week, with Sunday and Wednesday off. I'm in training for the store manager position, and that should happen around the summer.

One of the main reasons why I like working for the company so much is because they love to promote their employees. You work hard and the results will pay over time. I started with the company as just a part timer 2 years ago, and now I'm planning on running my own store soon.

Of course, I still plan on finishing school and moving to bigger and better things.
