Do you think the gamecube is really under rated.

Oh boy, and more flame wars...

BTW, Eternal Darknes, Resident Evil and RE0 have all been under $20 at most places for a long while. I'm not sure about since Christmas though. I would think those are mostly gone out of the retail line now... And I think SSBM is $20 as well.

But the Z button is a pain to get to. What were they thinking...?
They weren't that was the dumbest thing ever. They needed another button and ran out of room to put it.

They should have put some further down like on the Xbox.
I wish everyone who ragged on Nintendo and the Cube would at least give it a decent try. A couple of night ago, my friends and I had a Halo 2 LAN party, and before it got started, myself and a few others were playing Metroid Prime 2. Others came, saw the Cube, saw Prime 2, and scoffed at it! "Metroid is stupid, it's not real, and it looks crappy! Gamecube sucks; let's go play Halo!" Uh...Halo 2 is realistic? Prime 2 looks crappy? Metroid games are stupid, even though you have never played one? And then, these same people had a blast playing Mario Party 6. :? If someone is ragging on the Gamecube, or Nintendo in general, you can usually say it's becuase they haven't played it, and own another system...
Obviously they are very stupid, if they hate Metroid and love Mario Party. :)

Great, exclusive GCN games:

REmake
Resident Evil 4 (exclusive for a year)
All Nintendo franchise games, which are nearly all incredible
Tales of Symphonia
Ikaruga - On Dreamcast first
Star Wars: Rogue Leader
Star Wars: Rebel Strike
Eternal Darkness
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Super Monkey Ball 2 - Remix of stages from 1 + 2 + exclusives being released for
PS2

+ Xbox
Skies of Arcadia Legends - Originally on Dreamcast, with a few hours of new content added
I could make arguments for Twin Snakes and REmake, but those are significant enough upgrades that they're worth a re-purchase, especially REmake.
Super Monkey Ball on the PS2 and Xbox is going to be a joke. The analog control on the GCN is far superior and serious monkeyballers know that sensitivity is everything.

This whole thread sounds like a Nintendo Anonymous meeting.

The Sega Saturn was a trully underrated system as well as the Dreamcast. IMO

Thing with Nintendo for me is that it seems EVERY friggin game has a Mario, Link, Samus, etc. Come out with NEW characters and franchises PLEASE!!!

Nintendo needs to mix it up a bit instead of recycling characters. They might be an innovator of gameplay, but they need to brush up on the character design department.

Underated, there isn't a word to describe the genral opinion of the GCN.

Seriously, if popularity was measured by innovation and pure fun factor, the Cube would be 10x bigger than Jesus. They would create a religion just to worship Nintendo.

Maybe I didn't make it fully clear: What I meant was that you can easily get Eternal Darkness for 5 bucks after coupons at any EB. Couple that with
"couponed" REmake and RE0 which retail at 18 bucks used.

And maybe I'm just being paranoid, but was that "Flame wars" comment directed solely at me, or the general thread? I favor Nintendo, but I'm not a fanboy. There is a great difference.

I have all 3 systems right now:
Ps2-6 Games
Xbox-8Games
GC-30games

I'd say it's my favorite, if only because I think the analog stick is much easier to use. Don't now why, but it is. People label it because of all the X-TREME marketing the ps2 and especially Xbox are doing; The Gamecube is kiddy, nevermind that you're still playing a videogame. Another factor I like about my GC is that I got it on launch, dropped it ont concrete, left it in my car on a night with subzero temps, kicked it, spilled a milkshake on it, dinged it with a knife, drug it around by its cords, and knocked it out f a 2 story dorm window and it's only given me ONE dre. My ps2 and Xbox have given me more than I'd like to count.
To address the hate towards all the franchise games; Waht does it matter if the games are of excellent quality? Who cares if it's Samus if the game is frigging fun? Why invent a new and potentially lameass character? Paper Mario 2 is perhaps one of the, if not the, greatest adventure/rpg games of 2004. Who cares if it's Mario or not when the gameplay is that good? It just seems like a very weak arguement. Not that I mind if you guys like another system, it's all good my gaming brothers(and sisters)! :)
PO GC is only $$60 at ebgames. I'm almost tempted to pick up a second one.

$60!! I've never bought refurbished before but damn that's tempting. Can I trust that it's not gonna crap out on me after a year? Has anyone ever had any problems with their cubes? What else would I need to get started - a memory card? I looked at the holiday bundle link that Kaijufan posted but it looks like they've discontinued that one.

Reality's Fringe] To address the hate towards all the franchise games; Waht does it matter if the games are of excellent quality? Who cares if it's Samus if the game is frigging fun? Why invent a new and potentially lameass character? Paper Mario 2 is perhaps one of the said:
I'm not saying that I hate Nintendo's characters (Metroid friggin rules), I'm just saying that they need a bit more variety. It's too much overload and to me it's starting to wear out the likability of those characters a bit. more so when they are from one genre and then all of sudden in a different one.

I've been able to play a lot of cross platform games for the PS2 and the Cube and the Cube is superior in the graphics department. Higher framerate, deeper color in textures, and more texture detail becomes more than obvious when compared side by side in games like Nascar 2003, SRS racing, Everything or nothing, X-men legends, Medal of Honor, and many more. The difference is like night and day when you have a 32" HDTV and progressive scan output for both. There is the occasional port that isn't optimised and performes more pooly on the Cube, but that is few and far between.

And you can't really blame Nintendo as the sole culprit of character recycling, every manufacturer does it. Look at Sonic, Spyro, Crash, and a many others. Xbox has the luxury of no history to be compared to. I don't have much of a problem with Nintendo's new generation of recycled icons except for the fact that they STILL don't do voiceovers for their mario and pokemon games and fill them with the same incipid, repetitive dialogue thet they are famous for. Playing Paper mario would be much more enjoyable if they eliminated all the superfluous chatter like "you are the famous hero that I';ve always wanted to meet, arent you. well, that's great, let's now move on to the next part of the adventure, this is so great to be here in the lovely area with your majestic presence, blahdy, blady, blah." = translation: " Hi, you're mario, I'm a goomba, let's go find Peach." Who writes this stupid shit ? I expext more from $50 new release games. It's not that hard to pay some dufus to read a godamned script for a few hours and record them. They had an excuse because of lack of memory on the GBA and N64, but not now.

The major factor in the fact that the Gamecube is NOT underrated is that there is no online component to any of their games. I pay the same price for a GC game with basically the same features, but NO ONLINE PLAY versus the same game WITH online play for the PS2. Obviously the PS2 gives more value for the dollar. All that gameboy connectivity shit is just that, shit. I've hardly used any of it because they're basically just novelty items.

Wow, reading these posts make me want to get a gamecube. When considering console system, I put GCN lower in the priority list (mainly because I wanted to try something NEW). I got the first 8-bit system, the super nintendo, & the N64. I got Xbox & PS2. I got Xbox because of Halo2. Unfortunately, I didn't really get into it.

Since I have thirty days to return my Xbox; I could actually return my Xbox and buy a GCN! I will actually save some money too. Or I could shell out some money to get GCN too.
To the many members who own all three systems, how do you divert the time to play on all three? I have a backlog of games to play on just two systems!

Personally i think it is a bit underrated, but could be worse. I liked the Sega consoles to tell you the truth, sadly my idiot brother sold my DC and my Games for PS2 games, that were not even FOR HIM. Anyways GC is a great little system, and amazingly pops out some amazing freaking graphics. Just look at RE 4.

Still when the time comes for upgrades of consoles PS3 will be my first purchase. Nintendo will be the next, and Xbox2 probably won't touch after owning Xbox  Not my flavor. Overall guess you could say i'm a "playstation fanboy" if ya want but I like em all, but just more in favor of sony / nintendo. Xbox i may give another chance if they get more games i'm into.

I think the GC is quickly over looked... my roommate had no intention of getting one until he watched me playing RE4... but what is most impressive... is that the cube is a great gift for girl friends. I bought one for my girl friend and animal crossing and mario cart... wow... I would have never guessed she would become so attached. =)

I don't :( Games that I truly love get pushed aside for games that I feel obligatiry to finish. CAG's biggest fault is that most of the cheap games are in fact games we should never play, but can't help but buying.

CAG, the double-sided sword of greatness :)

I understand perfectly. In fact, I saw many upcoming new games I want to buy. However, I have about 6 different games I haven't finish (I know many CAG have much more). The GameCube with RE4 and many great RPG games make it look tempting. But, I don't even know how I will have the time to play it all.

But I agree with your second comment... CAG is a double-edged sword.

Well, the Xbox belongs to my husband; there's nothing out for it that I want. My PS2 is for games that I want that aren't on the Cube, as well as for some of my favorite PS1 games. My Cube is sacrosanct. I love that thing. The only thing that comes close is my GBASP.

Anyway, I do think the Cube is underated 'cause of its kiddie image. I hate to see it happen, but I think after some of Nintendo's other problems, like their heavy-handed censorship in the past, Virtual Boy, or the fact that much of the N64's game library was crummy, that it's not surprising. GC/GBA connectivity was pushed way too hard as well. And although I don't like online gaming, it seems to be something that a lot of people want, but Nintendo didn't put much of a system in place for online. It's too bad; I'd like to share the happiness of my little black box of joy.

I think it, the kiddie image, could be due to the fact that people don't take a purple system as not being kiddie when it's two competitors are a sleek-looking, and generally a normal color for electronic equipment, black case. Though it's not a smart thing to judge a system on, image can be everything to a potential buyer.

Yeah, but it wasn't available at launch, which it could've put people off of considering it.

It's definitely underrated, but I can understand why people are skeptical about it. After the Nintendo 64, I was in no particular hurry to buy a new Nintendo console either. But then Metroid Prime came along and Circuit City had a great bundle deal and the rest is history. As of right now, the GameCube is easily one of my favorite consoles of all time, and I've been gaming for 25 years.

I really don't think the Cube is underratd at all.

First things first, the Cube is a great system. It's top games stand right next to the top games on the other systems as must plays for gamers.

That being said, it isn't the "kiddie" image that hurts the Cube. If anything, it should be helping it. It's the simple smaller lot of games that hurts the Cube. The PS2 and the Xbox seem to hae a game worth playing coming out at least once a monh. Just look, its January, it should be a barren time for games, but the PS2 and Xbox are having new releases.

Cube also doesn't cater to sports games. There is a large collection of gamers who only play sport games. So, that whole part of the market is gone (its far easier for them to try a new game you have like Metroid Prime 2, when they already have the system for their core gaming desires).

So, overall, Cube is a very solid and enjoyable system. I can also see why its peoples favorites. Personally, I think its the perfect number 2 system. The games it has are awesome, but you need something that has more games out to help you through the lulls. (For the record, I'm 26, and have all 3 systems)

For the guy that wanted a rundown on how much people with all three systems play each system, here's mine...

X-Box: mostly sports games for me, about half of my gaming comes from X-Box, multiplatform games, I'll more than likely get for X-Box...
Gamecube: Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia, and RE4 are taking up most of my playing time right now, I'd say I play my Cube almost as much as my X-Box, and IMO has the best exclusive titles...
PS2: I'm too lazy to reach behind my TV to turn the stupid thing on, so I play it maybe once every 3 months, I think the games are boring, and lose my interest quite quickly, they haven't done much new in a long time, and seriously who is that genius that put the power button on the back of the console????

That's just my input though, some people seem to like PS2 though...
But six hour long cutscenes and 2 sequels a year for each franchise, just doesn't cut it for me...
-Goatman

I have all 3 systems and have a ton of games for each. Probably about 40 on the Cube, 50 on Xbox and about 60 on PS2. I agree the Cube is underrated in the US because of its Kiddie Image. It is unfortunate and I am wondering how many more consoles Nintendo might make. I also think the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games are starting to see a diminishing return because they have gone to the well too many times. I am really hoping the new system will in fact be a revolution and change the way we play games. Why do we have to have a system connected to a TV that you play with a controller? What happened to the innovation? All the console makers need to innovate this round I think. How about that box that emits smells from the game that was in the works 5 years ago? How about a game where you use lots of peripherals if you have them? Like an adventure game where you can use the dance pad to run and jump obstacles, a light gun to shoot enemies, an eye toy device to dodge incoming gun fire? How about special glasses to wear durring the game that have a small screen to show you the map of the level you are on. Or even 3d glasses like the Master System had only updated and better for today. My point is that some new ideas need to come about and I think Nintendo may actually do something different this generation because I keep seeing all these games that have been done before in one way or another.

The purple always throws people off for Nintendo .. which I don't get why it should be purple like when the Gameboy Color was out.. it was purple and clear purple... They should have launched out the platinum first .. like the DS in a way. It seems appeal than the regular purple.. they should really make sure the color isn't like that.. maybe a nice blue or something or red.. or again platinum for their revolution. But that purple throwing people off could just be me x.x..

You, uh, know that the switch in the back is the master power switch right? And that it's perfectly acceptable to keep that flipped on all the time, and to just use the red/green stand-by button on the front. Pressing it to turn it on, holding it to turn it off. You never have to reach behind the ps2 at all.

Indeed. The GC is definitely the most underrated console out right now. I witnessed a beatdown session on Cube the other day and how because my friend's favorite game was MEtroid Prime 2 he was "gay." I thought it was pretty funny in that the only counter argument made by these Xbox fanboys (who are other friends of mine and mostly cool :) ) was that the game was gay. I also found it intersting that the people attacking the Cube only had Xbox while the people defending it had both Cube and Xbox. I was also called :retarded" for picking GC over Xbox if I could only have one system because the games were more original which is apparently a dumb reason.

And the GC does get a lot of crap for its "kiddie games." I've given up fighting over video game status though because it takes away from the enjoyment of the games. I can't count how many times I've defended Wind Waker before. I mena, how exactly is it kiddie? Wasn't the story about condemning an entire world to drown to stop evil from spreading? But anyway the short answer would be: yes.
