Does Anyone Else Have Launch Concerns About the 360?

PittsburghAfterDark

CAGiversary!
I was very surprised that there was no release date for the 360 at E3. I don't ever remember a console launch 4-5 months out with no firm date. Seems to me that 9.9.99 was going to be the DC launch date for all of 1999. Of course, there's the opposite, the surprise launch of the Saturn. In this age of ultra marketing hype why no date?

Why no pricing? No firm slate of launch day titles. No slate of launch "window" titles. No information on pricing for titles beyond the $59.99 (Good God, I hope not.) posted on Gamestop and EB.com for every title yet mentioned in the gaming press. No pricing or even availability of console extras. Are we going to be able to get the 40GB or 60GB HD's at launch? Will those HD's have any extra capabilites? HDMI or DVI support?

Any way to migrate Xbox HD contents to the 360? This is something I've really wondered since I have 120+ games and 100+ songs for custom soundtracks.

It just seems to me that after seeing the E3 press conference MS surrounded the 360 in a black hole of mystery and secrecy. There has been no information in the 6 weeks since E3 about any of the questions poised, yet not answered, at the MTV and E3 introductions.

I know I may just be impatient but this doesn't seem to be the best way to hype what arguably is the biggest consumer electronics product introduction of the year.

my only concern is that dead or alive 4 will be delayed until a few months after launch

I wonder what microsoft thinks they are pulling? your rite..with 5 monthes to go i personally don't give a rats behind after the xbox 360. I don't know the price of the console, the official launch games, the prices of the games?

how am i supposed to want something i know nothing about?

My concern is that there are no real "stand out" exclusives. Sony has a new GTA and MGS 4 game coming, and Revolution will have their usual slate of Mario and Zelda games. In addition there isn't alot of info other than "the graphics will be better" and there is no pricing. I think I'm going to hold off for awhile on purchasing a next gen system.

i think its hilarious that there has been no pricing announced yet pre-orders are (apparently) selling out, looks like some people enjoy putting down alot of money on hype and blind faith ^^

I agree. And I have pretty much stopped going to EB because they keep hard selling pre-orders for a product with no price. I am just not willing to put money down on something that could be as low as 300 or as high as 500.

my worry is data transfer, it would be soo easy to do, a simple usb cable from an xbox controller port to the usb ports on the xbox 360 will some software taking all the data off of the old xbox would work, but it's so easy and makes so much sense, i'm afraid they wouldn't do this, and we would have to rely on a 3rd party device for it.

No HDMI or DVI support for 360. Not a big deal since video games don't need copyright protection or 7.1 sound into your tv (who has a HDMI receiver?).

5 months is a long time and we already have a lot of information, not like they are pulling a Saturn on us. if they really broke it out now, gamers would be happy, but the general public wouldn't give a shit, cause normal people don't give a shit about video games during the summer

and I thought people knew the system would be "around $299" as J.Allard said. i.e. not $500, not $400, but "around $299." and I have to hand it to him, though he blows a lot of hype filled smoke, he hasn't blatantly lied about anything about the system, which is more than I can say for Sony(speaking about the PS2 here, not the sketchy E3 trailers.)

oh well. water under the bridge. I only care about a certain developer that's exclusive to the system and the games they have planned for it,, not HDMI, HDTV, STD, LSD, PCP, ADD, whatever the hell you people are talking about 8)
Gears of War, Kameo and PD0 also look kinda cool

I do have some concerns about the 360, but they are hardware concerns (I would rather not buy a first gen version of a system), which is why I'm not getting at launch. Besides, the only confirmed exclusive launch title I want is PD0, but I can wait for it.

Don't worry about it. It's MS' style. There is really no point to continually advertise the system now, thats wasted money. People know about it, the ads will start around Aug 01.

Truth.

I'm going to wait it out to make sure there's no Thompson drive like incident in launch Xbox 360's.

Nothing surprising so far. Making a lot of noise about the 360 currently would be counterproductive when they still have a substantial number of Xbox units to move before production ends and more importantly a lot of Xbox software to keep selling. Putting a lot of emphasis on the next generation too far in advance serves no useful purpose. If there were a big trade show in August or September they'd very likely have held back a lot of the announcement until then.

As it is I'd expect to see them hold at least one big press event in Redmond about three months before launch to make a big impression as to what the real software looks like running as opposed to Mac-based prototype versions. Along with that will be a barrage of downloadable videos to start building interest as things get close enough to launch to make announcements with some finality. Things like the exact date, price, titles, etc.

Keep in mind that some of the stuff, especially launch titles, is subject to change. Even a minor delay in a title intended to go to manufacturing two weeks before launch can mean it misses being on store shelves that first day. Such a situation wouldn't matter a year after launch but is very important when every single title offered makes the display look a bit better. (Assuming the game isn't embarrassing garbage like Kabuki Warriors.)

As for transferring between Xbox and Xbox 360, if MS doesn't ofer something a third party is sure to jump in. Currently, the keyboard adapter (for use with Phantasy Star Online) and a good capacity USB flash drive should do the trick. The question is whether the Xbox 360 will recognize the Xbox's format for flash memory devices.

I doubt that there will be any larger hard drives available for several month or as long as the first year. What would be the point? you can use off the shelf USB drives for things like music, picture, and video storage, or stream from a PC. What is likely to overrun the capacity of the bundled drive any time soon? By the time the market develops for much greater drive capacity on the 360 the price of those drives will have come down considerably. Thanks to the latest writing techniques the high-end of 2.5" drive capacity has recently increased by almost double with little increase in drive cost. As that translates into greater capacity for the least expensive drive those will be the best choices for game consoles in need of just a bit more capacity. Customers who somehow need much more can make their choices at the appropriate time but for now it would be waste for Microsoft to start stocking up soon to be obsolete and overpriced 2.5" units.

A better question will be if they'll eventually increase the capacity of the bundled drive. The drives for the original Xbox were already obsolete in terms of the minimum capacity being used by mainstream drives in PCs but there was a deal made with the vendors that kept their older production lines busy while they upgraded other plants and allowed them to avoid laying off factory personnel during a slow period. That sort of situation doesn't come along every day and was only suitable to a device like the Xbox where only modders ever needed more drive capacity. Since MS has more elaborate options in mind for the 360 capcity will be more likely fully consumed so they're less likely to stay with the launch capacity over the 360's lifetime.

I will wait till the spring to get one more then likely don't hold me to that. I say spring of next year cause I want to get the 360 w/o all of the release bugs.

Why advertise anything when Sony is going to come out and say something to make it sound weaker.

MS: Xbox 360 will have graphics 10 X better then Xbox with 100 X better AI

Sony: PS3 will have 100 X better graphics then the HoloDeck on startrek.

MS: What?......

Sony: Yeah, right now I'm at the beach with Selma Hayek and JLO so go ahead and keep your DOA Vollyball. PS3 graphics look and FEEL better then anything.

MS: Yeah well we will have special upgrades that can be downloaded!

Sony: PS3 can cure Aids, you heard it here first.

It's already been stated before that pricing would be release at the end of summer...

So don't people... and many source are predicting a $299-$349 w/ Harddrive..

The hell? Isn't "by the end of this year" (which has only about 5 1/2 months left in it, by the way) good enough for you? We know it'll be out by the holidays. We know it'll probably be a bitch to get at first, because of the time they'll release it. We know it's not coming out, most likely by September or even October. And, they're probably still working out the kinks in the system to get it out perfect.

Have some patience.

I don't care when it launches and what games are available for it then because I'm not buying one until at least the first price drop anyway. Of course, the same goes for the competition, so it will likely be a couple of years yet before I get to experience any next generation hardware in the comfort of my own home.

My biggest concern is that the 360 is going to suck (or not be "next-gen" enough). MS has done an amazing job so far of unveiling a new system and not having a single announced game that I must play. When the DC was announced and I saw SC screens I knew I had to have it. Same thing with Mario 64 or SMW or Tekken, etc. Maybe in today's day I am spoiled by the multitude of great games for all systems - I don't know what it would take to stand out but I know the 360 hasn't shown it to me yet.

Like someone posted earlier, I have concerns about all new system releases. I can't see myself buying this at launch (or any other of this gen's systems) unless I can swing some great trade-in-credit deal to get it for cheap (like many of us did at EB for the PSP launch). There is just too much hype, and not enough substance. Inevitably, regardless of any hardware issue concerns, there is always a gap between a system's release and the arrival of a good batch of must-have games. Ususally by the time some must-have apps hit the street, the system can be found for cheaper than at launch, either due to a price-drop, a good sale, or due to the availability of pre-owned units.
That said, if 360 launched with a ton of killer apps (like a new Halo, GTA, and a handfull of others) then I would consider it more wothwhile.

Out of the current generation of consoles, the only console that gave players no reason whatsoever to buy it immediately was PS2. Gamecube had Smash Bros. shortly after the launch and Xbox had Halo. PS2 had a very lackluster launch and an equally poor first year...IMO, PS2 didn't start getting great games until after it's year anniversary, when DMC, MGS2, GTA3, etc, all came out.

Because of this, MS doesn't worry me with its lackluster launch. Plus, in 2 weeks, we get to hear the Japanese unveiling event, which will have a lot of surprises supposedly. I think there's a lot to get excited about the 360.

I am scared of the online market and matchmaking. If a game comes with no extras and all the new "unlockables" need to be purchased, the 360 can kiss it's ass goodbye to my money.

Also, matchmaking is the dawg shit. If come home work and my bros are playing Halo 2 I hafta wait till the next round to join. B.S. My theory on matchmaking is that Microsoft automatically finds people in your general area to reduce lag.

I will buy the 360 when I see more then 3 games I want.
