Does Gamestop treat all their customers so "nicely"?

Okay, here's the scenario:

I went into the store with three new games of the same title that I had purchased at Best Buy at a discount. I did not really want these games, but since they were really cheap I decided to go into Gamestop to see if I could trade these NEW games in for USED credit. I didn't even care if it was only for the $5 each I paid for them, I just wanted something else. The associate I spoke with who I assumed to be the store manager was EXTREMELY rude to me saying that I must have stolen the games from Best Buy. Upon showing him the reciept, he was extremely argumentative saying he was doing me a FAVOR by taking the games in for the used price. There was also a sale going on that said "Trade in 3 games and get $10 in bonus credit!" The guy then said there was no way he could give me the $10 extra dollars because I was already "ripping the store off as it was".

How am I ripping the store off? So if I bought the games for $10 each and I lost $2 each off, then that would be okay? Who is he to say that I was ripping the store off? I was giving the store three NEW SEALED games for only $8 in credit each that Gamestop sells for $30 new and $26 used. What if three of my relatives gave me the same title and I just wanted to get something else? I don't know if I'm ridiculous for thinking this, but I just find is dumb that they would think this way and think they were losing money.

Am I wrong? Does it really matter how much I paid for them? I don't think it does. Regardless of what I paid, the store gives a certain amount of credit. I think they should stick by that.

I haven't actually read your post yet, but the answer is Yes.

(I'm assuming there's sarcasm in your title).

I believe you were totally in the right here. However, I will still say...

A) It does look like you ripped 'em off from a store, despite the fact that you legitimately purchased them. GS and EB have to deal with stolen property all the time (see that case a couple months ago with the stolen PS2) so they have to be wary of that kind of thing. Good thing you brought your receipt.

B) $5 is crazy clearance, and I'm sure the trade-in value for those games were higher. So in a sense you were "ripping" him off, because why would anybody buy the games from GS if you can get them for $5 from BB? From a business standpoint, it would be suicide to take those games.

That said he was a jerk for not going for the $10 extra, which is corporate policy they should adhere to.

C) YMMV HEAVILY with GS/EB employees. Some guys are cool, but I do find that a lot of them are bitter minimum wage employees.

That said they should be courteous, it is their job after all.

Anyway, their behavior is disappointing, but not unexpected. Not all employees are douche bags, I've met some nice ones, but it happens.

For instance, I put in a pre-order for FF: Crystal Chronicles months before it came out. I didn't get a GC-GBA link cable with the pre-order. I go to the counter with my slip, and he pulls out a game from behind the counter. I ask "where's my cable?" politely. He says, "Oh, sorry, we're out. Nintendo never makes enough of them." or some such. He tells me to come back later with my receipt to pick up a cable next week when they're "in stock."

I find that suspect, so I walk over to GC accessories..and naturally there are 5 brand new, Nintendo-brand GC-GBA cables right there. I pick one up, bring it to the counter and he says something like "Oops." Moron.

1) He (the employee) was being a jerk.
2) He can not deny you the extra $10 based on how much you paid for the games, but
3) He may be able to deny you the extra $10 based on all three games being the same. I don't know if this is a stipulation in the deal or not, but it is a possibility.
4) Which game was it? Maybe someone here wants it.

Why does he care if you are ripping the store off? Does he own stock in gamestop. I'd tell him to stay in his lane and follow the rules established by his store

I'm surprised you are all being so nice to this guy. He's part of the problem with this site, where he just buys games he doesn't want for their value. Don't support him or those like him.

Actually FYI I'm not a jerk for it. I had no intention of buying them to make profit. I actually bought them with my friends in mind and were going to give them to them, but one already had a copy and the other said "Dude, that game blows. I don't even want it for free." I already made a trading thread on here and no one wanted them.

The employee was a jerk. The company is offering a promotion therefore if they are a legitimate business they should stick behind their offer. Why do you waste the time buying the bargain games and returning them for credit? It's really not worth the hassle... hello LEAVE THEM FOR THE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO PLAY THEM!

GS and EB employess are mostly pimple faced douce bags who think they are god's gift to gaming. Need I say more? Except for Manimal.

Gamestop is full of shit, plain and simple. If that guy had told me he couldn't give me the deal they advertised, I would laugh in his face. Then I would call up the district manager and have him fired.

ok just so u know the 10 bucks extra does not apply towards any sports games and is only for the 3 main systems, gamecube, xbox and ps2.
and if the games were still shrunk wrapped he could have told u no right off the bat because they are not allowed to take back more than one item wrapped.even though he does sound like a rude person.

Yeah i wouldve just ripped off the shrink wrap and traded em in so they looked preowned atleast and make it more beleivable to avoid this a situation like that. One of my buddies used to manage a gamestop and he get a little irked sometimes receiving more than 1 shrinked wrap item. I mean dont get me wrong the manager is wrong for being an asshole and rude but you cant blame them for thinkin like that. He shouldve still giving you the extra 10 bucks cause of the deal.

Hey, I'm trying not to be a pimply-faced douche-bag. It's my glands!!!! Little tip though for the thread starter; Never take multiple copies of the same game to one of those stores. whether or not you got them legit, it still looks HIGHLY suspect. You'd be surprised what peple try to pull on us, and how -low level employees- get punished for following mangerial directions.

fuck Gamestop!!! I went in there the other day to buy a Cima: The Enemy for GB. They had it for $19.99 labeled as new; which was $10 cheaper than they normally have it.

Two things burned me about this encounter:
1) In traditional Gamestop style, they have game as new on the shelf, but when you bring it to the counter to pay for it, they don't have a sealed game. They have the game in a plastic slip; telling me they took the game out b/c they needed a display.

I always thought this sucked b/c I'm paying a premium to get a new, sealed game and these assholes open everything up and sell it as new.

2) I get home to find that my "new" game actually has a save file from someone who already played it for about 3 hours. This is completely fucking unacceptable. This is bush league. I was so pissed.

I have made up my mind to never shop there again. They don't really have any good deals since they stopped selling 8-bit and 16-bit games. I could get better deals on nex-gen games somewhere else and don't have to worry if someone has already played them.

Man, it feels good to vent.

I can tell you guys right now that there are some good GS. Example: Westgate in San Jose. Nice people, talk to you, not full of shit.

If I were you, I would ask for the number of the district manager or somebody and call them on my cell phone right in front of them. Screw the bastards.

I had someone try to trade in to me today some of the best buy games..obviously I am wise to the BB deal so I made a cheap offer and he seemed offended...( I offered only about $4 each credit) so I politely told him "sorry but these games are on sale now at Best Buy for $5 so the value isnt there for me and you are welcome to keep them"

The truth is people get offended too often when a store makes an offer. While they didnt have to be rude jerks about it...you dont have to take them up on the offer either. If they didnt want to give you a good deal or honor an offer they had listed then you should have walked out. If someone implied that I had stolen games in a public place I would demand to speak to his supervisor and let them know this person is defaming your character. That's bullshit that he tells you the games are stolen. I would get really offended at that myself.

Just tell him to STFU get his name and report him. Nothing gives him the right to accuse you of anything

my former roommate used to be one of those Gamestop assholes...He used to tell me stories and think they were funny(Making fun of customers with the other employees, keeping kids off the game test machines). FUnniest thing i heard from him was when he got fired from those 'dumbf*** complaint placers', as he called them. THat made my day. Yeah, not all dudes are douchebags, theyre pretty rare. All the gamestops and eb employees around here seem to have a good sense of humor, and are always willing to help out.

Man, people take a lot of shit from employees. People like that need to be put in their place. Granted, you were trying to trade in the 3 of the same games, but you had the reciept.

what a MORON, they should only complain if the game is cd only, like if you stole it from blockbuster. Why would you steal something from a place like Best Buy and EVEN if you did why would you take the crappiest games, why wouldn't you take a 50 dollar game? why take like nhl hitz pro?
Let kids play on the Game Test machines? Ha, not in my store.
Isn't that what they are there for? So kids can play a game for a couple of minutes and then get their parents to by them a $50 game and/ or system? Why wouldn't you want that, unless either the kids are acting like jerks or it makes you feel like a big man?

It's funny how someone working a job that is just one step up from working a fast food chain will start power tripping

pick either one to work at... at promise me you will not be a total asshole like all of the other ppl who work there. Well the majority of them.

I don't get a lot of this bad customer service. For the people who have had negative experiences are you young? I'm 25 and about 6"3 maybe thats why I don't get treated like dirt. In fact I checked out a new EB around here and had a friendly convo with one of th eemployees for like 10 minutes.

thats life, if you are a kid, they treat you like crap because you cant really do anything.

I called up a company and complained and they wouldnt do anything, my dad called up and they actually did something

Its all about attitude. EX: I walk into most stores and they see that Im a teenager and wont give my crap for customer service. But when I call them up from my companys phone and complain (Of course in a mature manner, and without mentioning age), they are suddenly all polite about it.

Althrough I have to admit, when I'm working out my part-time job, and dealing with teenagers all day, its quite easy to go into super asshole mode myself. So I appologise in advance for contributing to the asshole situation at your local amusement parks lol.

You know, it really sucks that you got crappy service at GS. I hate to hear when customers are treated that way. The guy WAS wrong for being a jerk, but he was right also. If you take in 3 SEALED copies of the game, receipt or not, we are not supposed to trade them. We are not allowed to take shrink wrapped games at all, actually. I would say 75% of things traded still wrapped are stolen. No joke.

If you feel you were truely slighted, give the DM a call. Tell him what happened. Ask him about the trade policy. Maybe everyone can learn from it. Dont call trying to get the guy fired, because then the DM is just gonna think you are being an asshat.

If you accuse me of stealing then you better have proof of it. That is a very touchy subject that can get a store in a lot of deep trouble. I know cause I run a retail store and even though we have to look out for suspicious behaviour, we're definitely told to make sure that we don't accuse anyone unless you saw them in the act.
I have tried to trade in games at these stores and would almost wellcome them accusing me of it. They would be doing me a favor.

The difference is one would be accused of shoplifting *in* store. The other is that it is assumed the games are stolen from elsewhere. Again, you should not accuse someone either way unless you know for sure.

Look at it like this. Say you brought me 3 games, still sealed. If I traded those games in (and according to the law, I SHOULD be suspicious of these kinds of trades) I could technically be brought up on fencing charges if it turns out they were stolen. I *should* have had better sense then to trade 3 of the same thing, much less still wrapped. You are pawning games, and we have rules as well as LAWS to follow. What may seem innocent to you (buying 3 games cheap to trade) looks very shady to us who see some VERY shady people come in our stores.

Most kids come to us since were a 'free arcade'. Its a rare situation when a kid comes in to play and his prents are with him. Its usually just a bunhc of kids that got off school that want to play free games and break are controllers.

And for the shrinkwrap thing, GameCrazy HAS to open all shrinkwrapped games to not only make sure the disc is inside, but the make it used. We also have to be suspicious of people brining in numerous copies of shrinkwrapped games.

Nonetheless, you shouldnt be a douche to everyone who gets close to the systems (as your implying), because that doesnt shaq-fuing mean that every kid thinks YOUR store is an arcade.

damn..

If I were you I would probably be upset. But that being said I think most of you are whiny little bitches. Come on, they have their boss riding their asses, telling them they have to be wary of all suspicious transactions, which this definitely is. Furthermore, for whoever said it is their job to be courteous, you have to remember they don't get paid shit and just as you got upset over this, which I would consider to be a minor inconvenience in your life, they too are human beings and have their own shit to deal with. So in conclusion, stop being whiny little bitches and grow up. You were trying to make some quick money off of a glitch in the video game buying system and it didn't work, boo-fucking-hoo.
