I grew up preferring dogs but could never get one because my little brother was allergic. So when I got on my own I got a dog and i thought it was a pain in the ass they are way too dependent. The next time around I got a cat and I my preference was changed. They are a lot more indeoendent and you don't have to find a kennel if you are going on a one or two day trip.

Dogs. Cats are too apathetic to my presence. I really don't understand old ladies who buy cats because they're lonely.

I like both so long as someone else has primary responsibility for them. I grew up with four older siblings so I got the benefit of all their pets with none of the hassles. During my childhood there were always dogs, cats, horses, rodents, and assorted reptiles in the house.

You cannot lump dogs into single psych profile. They vary hugely by breed. For instance, my sister (who I currently ahare a house with) has a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Indy. He's a good beast but RR's are fairly independent by temperment and it take some effort to get them excited about playing once they've matured. This is a letdown for my sister since she's developed an interest in agility training and competition. She's looking at getting a pup to start from scratch and is considering a very popular breed for this, the Border Collie. To get practice working with such a dog she's borrowed on several recent days a friend's former show dog name Red.

Red is the same 8 years old as Indy but has a level of enthusiasm Indy hasn't shown since he was two. Red will be driven utterly insane if nobody works or plays with him a bit every day, while Indy is happy to get a few miles walk. Very different but both dogs.

Wow. I don't know why, but when I saw the topic header, I thought I was going to see a picture of some animal-human hybrid, and we were to decide if it was more cat-like or dog-like. Weird.

... oh yeah, cats. I like cats better.

I find that people who prefer dogs are emotionally warm and friendly.

I find that people who prefer cats are emotionally distant and prefer to be left alone.

Just an observation. Not saying everyone falls into that stereotype. But, I much prefer the relationship with a dog who wants to be a part of everything you do than to be around a cat who would rather watch you from a distance and never quite seems to trust anybody or anything.

My cat is like a dog. Hes very freindly. never bites, he does funny stuff all the time and he loves to be around people. Hes about 20

I used to hate cats, but my mom had a alley cat that had babies in her window well, so I took one. It's a pretty cool cat, and is slightly nuts. The thing I don't like is her need to piss in the house on occasion. She has a litter box, but still has to pee in the hallway. God is that smell rank.
I also have two dogs, one is old and cranky, the other is young and hyper, so I can't let him in the house to often because he would jump all over my baby daughter.

I've never had a dog or cat, but I do have a bird and a rabbit. The rabbit is inbetween a dog and a cat personality wise. He's more interested in humans, but he's not dependent on them all the time. He'll do these funny jumps in the morning to show you he's happy to get his breakfast and loves pets. The bird acts like a dog though, he needs to be where we are and he'll lick your face too.

If I had to choose between getting a dog or a cat, I would pick a dog.

My bf's parents have a cat that is very affectionate. They "adopted" it when it came to their house as a stray (it was injured). Animals who were abused or left on the street are generally more appreciative and affectionate towards humans. It's sad, but another reason why adoption is better than buying.

Personally, I like dogs. However, I'm not at a point in my life where I could adequately take care of a dog (they do require a lot of care), so if I had to get a pet I would get a rabbit. Cats are just too bitchy. My roommates own a cat, and the thing is borderline retarded. There is no teaching a cat. If a dog does something wrong you put his face in it, yell at him, and give him a little smack, and he will never do it again. Or will avoid doing it at all costs. A cat, is well nigh impossible to train. Except they learn when to expect food.

And you should always adopt. Mixed breeds are usually more stable than purebred animals. And they are a lot less expensive. Of course the purchase price of most animals is usually the least expensive part of owning them.

I liked cats, and grew up with them, but my wife and son are allergic to cats.
I was never a huge fan of dogs until we got one, and he was great.
Every one of our cats/dogs was adopted from a shelter or a person, not bought from a pet shop.

Cats are better then dogs.
- Easier to maintain
- All their crap goes in the same box (easy to clean up) Dogs you have to follow around to scoop.
- There are no laws, that I know of against cats, dogs have leash laws, noise laws, poop laws.
- Homeowner insurance doesn't exclude certain breeds of cats like it does dogs
- Cats don't bark all f'ing day long
- You don't hear about a cat mauling a little kid on the news all the time
- You can go away for the weekend and not have anyone watch a cat.

my old cat woulda fucked up any dog u can throw at em he lived 25 yrs and in his day had more muscle than a pitbull and i've seen him fuck up a rot no exageration. you all forget cats are so gracefull he woulda tap danced all over your dogs faces. ive seen it no lie

Dog.

Cats don't listen to you. Our damn cat sits on our step and won't move. I have to gently nudge her ass off the step so I don't accidentally step on her. Plus she has the habit of jumping herself right on my WHITE truck after I wash it and leave mud tracks all over it.

Our dog isn't that bright but at least she'll listen most of the time.

I have only ever had cats, and I love them, so I guess that makes me at cat person. However, once I have my own house with a yard I really want a dog--a husky. I can't say if I will change over to a dog person, but who knows. I think that I will always love cats.

A lot of things people are mentioning about why cats are bad never crossed my mind before. My cats really don't like to be left alone, they love attention. They are funny too.

Ohh well, everyone's got their own opinion.

*Meow!*

Cats. I have 3 of em. One of em follows me around everywhere. 1 is a little kitten and the other is about 10 years old.

Dogs are alright.

I don't think of myself as either a dog person or a cat person. I'm a primate person. I may keep one of those other species as pets but they don't define me.

I like both, especially if someone is cleaning up after them. Dogs in general are too much of a hassle to clean up after. Cats are generally cleaner, AND they can be trained to use either a litterbox or a toilet. My first cat was trained to use the toilet by his previous owner (but he never did learn how to flush though XD). As soon as I move into a new place I'm going to train my other cats to use a toilet too. I've never seen or heard of dog using a toilet.

I wouldn't mind getting a dog sometime in the future though when I get a larger place again. But I'm only getting one of those specially trained attack guard dogs to take with me while I go jogging. Because dammit, if I have to walk a dog everyday, it might as well be able to do something useful. At least my cats keep my place bug and rodent free.

i hate both now. i used to like both and now that we have 6 cats and 3 dogs, i can't stand any of them. i will probably end up getting a mini-doberman once me and my g/f live in a place of our own. i can't stand the bigger dogs because they jump all over you if they stay excited like when they were puppies.
