Dragon Age Origins
I wonder, how many people love Bioware and Bethesda? In my experience most people prefer one by far over the other. I'm definately a Bioware kind of guy.
Yeppers. I love the "playable novella" approach to game design. If you like, you can sit back and read digital history books picked up in Elder Scrolls, or talk to your NPC enemies and allies in the Bioware games. And everything you experience in some way is integral to your story path, or understanding events in the game, or just appreciating the backstory of the game's lore. And yet none of it is ever mandatory; you can skip it all and just play if you like. That's a tough balance to strike from a design perspective, and it's why Bethesda and Bioware are so special. The only downside is that I just don't hav ethe time anymore to invest in all that imaginary world-building.
Is this a D&D-style rpg?
I don't have the game, so someone can definitely correct me on this
I would say it's D&D-ish (as most Bioware RPGs are, really). You create a character, run around, talk to NPCs, complete quests. Really for the formula for a lot of RPGs

There are some dice-rolling mechanics involved but it's not so much heavy on D&D mechanics as other titles have been. For instance, weapons aren't classified by stuff like 2d 1-6 and armor does not have AC in the same way D&D has it.

Man I wish I had time to play this right now but my gaming backlog is getting bigger by the day, and adding a 60+ hour game into the mix wouldn't help much. That being said I LOVE Bioware and am hoping there are some good black Friday deals on this.

I like both Bethesda and Bioware games. If you had asked me a year ago which I prefered, I would have said Bioware in an instant (Mass Effect was awesome). That being said, after the pure awesome that was Fallout 3 and the fact that Dragon Age is so incredibly unoriginal and derivative, I almost want to switch my opinion.

I wish that they could just combine the atmosphere/open-endedness of Fallout with the combat/story/dialogue/characters from DA:O and give us some sort of perfect utopian modern day RPG. I won't get my hopes up though.

Another plus for getting it for the PC is there are ways to edit your save files so if you did in fact choose tactics for your skills (which I did), you can change it to something more useful (which I did). Also looking forward to see what the mod community can/will generate.

I've put 40 hours into my game already (human noble shield warrior) and I am guessing I am roughly two thirds of the way through. After I'm done I'll probably go through the other origin stories and play through the most interesting one. The game is obviously great if I've put that much time in it in a little over a week. I've played BG1 and 2 and this game is a worthy successor.
