Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

Man. I just finished reading up until this point. You guys are all crazy, in a good way. I have yet to beat the game, my guy's a simple Paladin at level 34, and all of my maps are crummy, save for the level 82 I picked up from another crazy dude at the Best Buy event this past weekend.

FWIW, I'm going to get crazy soon, though: the wife and I are going to drive to Cleveland for that 8/22 Simons Mall event. :D Maybe I'll be able to pick up a bunch of new tags there. Here's hoping!

I hope you know that it's not actually near Cleveland, otherwise I'd be there.

Edit: Er, nevermind, guess I'm gonna be out of town that weekend too. Amazing.

I found the level 99 map (that I got at Best Buy) last night. I got wiped out by my first encounter on the first floor. Yay! It didn't help that I had switched my Priest to a Warrior to get the Whipping Boy skill (to do the Paladin quest) and she was only level 10 or so. So basically I didn't have my healer with me. I was hoping to beat one or two monsters and get some good exp for her though. I guess I'll go for one of the lower level ones though - maybe try to find those Metal King Slimes again.

Dumb question: I see the term "revocation" in some of the FAQs about grotto difficulty calculation. But yet no one explains what the hell that is. Best I can figure is number of times you changes classes (ie, "vocations")? Then I saw one cryptic comment about only being able to do so 10 times. Can you only switch classes 10 times then you get stuck on the last one? Or what the hell is all this about? I held off switching some guys last night because of that - would like to know if I can do so freely.

Revocation is when you reset a level 99 character to level 1. It allows for more skill points and in the case of your main character increases the quality of the grotto maps you will find. You can only reset 10 times is what it is saying.

I wish I could help but I have no clue about that calculations.

In other news.
I fought like 50 Drakularge looking for Gold Bars. I only got like 3 and tons of Dragon Scales though. I'm glad my guys know Half-Inch as it helps a lot.

Fought Atlas today and did pretty good. My main guy died from a Crit Hit but that was my only death. Though I was multihealing a lot.

Quick question: When you revocate at Lv 99 do all the skill points for other classes reset.
What's the best way to level up to 100.
thx a bunch
What exactly does Forbearance do?
Just curious.
It radiates awesomeness. Best skill in the game IMO, especially combined with Knight's Watch.

Wow, OK, I didn't even know that was possible. I can't even see myself getting close to level 99 let alone needing to reset it . Once I hit 30 or so, leveling up has been very slow. Plus there are always other classes to level up in. So this is something you might want to do when you max out ALL the classes for a character? Seems, rather, uh, extreme to me...

It definitely is, but once you combine Japan + Dragon Quest, you understand why they put it in there. I built up two classes per character to level 99 and have started revocating, my characters are now crazy powerful.

What do you get for revocating though - do you get to double up on the stat bonuses if you go through the same class again? I guess I would just move to other classes before revocating unless there is some special reason for doing so (something with the grottos like you said earlier?).

It would be utterly insane without metal enemies - it is only really OCD when you factor them in. Metal baddies can make leveling up absurdly easy. I know once I discovered the metal medleys in the bad cave (anywhere that the hunter mechs can spawn) I got from level 1 to 20 on several classes in a half hour to an hour per go - depending on the spawn rate and my skill at evading the normal enemies.

I can only imagine that once you find the big metal slimes that things get even more absurd. I just found the liquid metal slimes, which give 10k exp per enemy per character. I think there are two levels of slimes higher than that one.

I would love just to be able to kill one to get in my bestiary. Well and to level up a bit.

You get an accessory for each class you revocate. And yeah, the number of times your main character has revocated affects the quality of grottos.

Other than that, there's no benefit over switching to the other classes to level them up.

Yeah, I've found the liquid metal ones (I think I killed one) and in one of the maps I got from the Best Buy event I found Metal King Slimes. I got lucky and killed one with a critical hit - got me 30K per char ;).

Should've stuck to NYC. Went to the BB in NJ and only 1 person showed up in the hour I was there. Got a tag from the BB employee, the 1 kid who came for the map, and from the Nintendo rep who barely spoke English. Got a t-shirt, stickers, and 2nd poster, though.

Where/when did they hand out the all-blue slime tshirts? I'd rather have that than a Party Slime one.

At the Gamestop event a couple of weeks ago.

Finally beat a Liquid Metal Slime and got all 4 of my characters maxed out in one skill. Already have 3 of the 4 to the teens or higher in their 2nd class and the other just got to 100 skill points in her. Busy farming LMS for now. Probably going to do it until I max out another skill or get bored. I'm guessing boredom will set in first.

Grinding for points is really boring, not to mention annoying. If the last boss is as cheap as people say, I'll probably go farming for skill points sooner then later.

I was, but I really wanted to change out my main character and get a Sage prior to going to the
palace
. I know I'm getting very close to the end, but I feel like grinding a bit here and there. Taking a break right now but still in the same spot. I jumped from level 1 to 10 with my recently change Ranger, was a Martial Artist, in one fight with a LMS. The other 3 are 19 or higher. Only been doing this for an hour and change, since last night. It's nice to pick up and see if I get lucky and find the LMS. If not, I just set it down and get back to housework.

The story bosses have proven to be...pretty easy. Without much in the way of vocational skills, and mostly relying on weapon skills, Caduceus heals enough to keep up (and the Ranger can help in a pinch), but Multithrust and Rain of Pain coupled with Helm Splitter takes down the latest boss in about six turns. It would probably also help that my classes (Paladin, Gladiator, Priest, Ranger) are between 32 and 38, but I was worried that the more flimsy classes would take too much damage without having invested in the Paladin's Virtue (and therefore having access to Forbearance and added Resilience) ... well, it just feels too easy. They've even got around 90+ skill points saved up by this point. :/

Botticus, am I understanding correctly? Is it the place in Akron? 3265 West Market Street, Akron, OH?

Thanks,

I bid on the only party slime T-shirt on ebay. It's up to $22.50 now. Am I crazy? The people who got these must be true fans, because nobody wants to sell them.

That's my shirt on eBay folks. I wanted to keep it, but when I saw that no one had theirs up I just figured I could use the cash more than the swag. (I'm out of work)

If anyone from this thread bids and wins, just reference this post and take 10% Off.

Thanks,

Larry
Yep, that should be the place. I was just commenting that I'm a half hour outside of Cleveland, and Akron is another 45 minutes away, so Cleveland it is not.

Somebody needs to make me stop alchemizing for no real purpose. Finished up all the weapons that don't require obscene drop rates or heavily regulated items like orichalcum. On to shields, which should be relatively quick. Given those limitations I'm not sure 75% will be an attainable goal for the accolade, but at least 50% should be done soon.

Spent this evening searching for my third grotto. Can't find it to save my life. It's a level 7 in some woods somewhere, but I've been all over I think. Ah well, maybe I'll go back to skill point grinding.

Because I couldn't get to sleep last night, I went ahead and changed classes and statred farming skill points this morning...and now everyone has at least 200 skill points. Go Liquid Metal Slimes!

On a side note, I went ahead and got Forbearance on my Spear user and then I couldn't kill as fast, so I reset without saving. So now I'm wondering if I should make my Wand user become a Forbearance using Tank, the Bow user to become a Mage for spells and mana replenishment with the bow skill, while either one of the Axe or Spear user becomes a Priest and the other a Gladiator for physical component.

Orr stick with my original plans of Spear/Virtue tank, Axe/Guts damage, Bow/(...) damage, and wand/faith priest.

Or wait. Bow user to tank (with Shield Omnivocation) and use of Forbearance, as the Spear -

You know what? Eff it. I'm going to go through the story and hoard skill points like nobody's business (and I'm already pretty close to the end). I probably don't even need a tank until I get to grottos, it seems.

That's almost exactly what I have, except instead of Bow/(...) I have Sword/Fource (Armanmentalist) in addition to the other 3 you listed.

I'm kind of thinking of switching my mage back to being a Priest, after I get the mage skill maxed out. Either that or turning her to a ranger and giving her a bow, then back to a priest.

The +100 Magical Might would be lost on the Priest, since they really don't have any way to utilize the stat. Maybe a Sage? If not, you could just save 12 points (not that they're hard to get) to get the last MP boost within the Mage vocational skills.

I am ultimately planning on the Sage route, the main reason I switched to a Mage (from a Priest). I just can't do the requirements for the Sage for just a bit longer (just started in the
Palace
). Right now, my healer is my Ranger. But once I get the Ranger skill maxed, I'll be going the Thief or Minstrel route). Hopefully by that time, I'll have entered the post game and just be grinding for Grottos and such.

I just changed my level 40 Mage into a Sage and what I miss (for bosses) is the Oomph spell. I used to use that on my Gladiator with the Falcon sword/Falcon slash ability and get 4 Hits in with Oomph. I also used accelerate a lot and a sage doesn't have that. I hope Sage gets something to counter the loss of those two spells.

Try getting some of the Fource abilities from the Armamentalist tree and then learning enemy elemental weaknesses, pretty much as good as Oomph.

For the Priest and Mage I say max out the Sage skills.
They give you more MP and strengthen your Might and Mending.
Also when you max it they use 25% less MP which is great for Kaboom and Multiheal.
You can start getting seeing the Great Troll for the Sage in grottos and the Realm

Thx for the grotto calc, that will me helpful.
I need 9 more mini medals for the Dragon Robe to make the Xenlon Robe for my Mage.

I have a question.
Why are people using the Falcon Sword/Uber Falcon Sword?
It does crap damage. I use Edricks Sword with the Falcon Slash ability and do 165 damage per hit. The falcon blade has a base damage of like 40 while Edrick's Sword is like 250+.

I just don't get it.

The bulk of your attack power is coming from your strength stat by that stage of the game.

Attack power for level 69 Warrior with Erdrick's Sword: 596
Attack power for level 69 Warrior with Uber Falcon Blade: 464 (times two hits)

Real example against a Stenchurion:
Erdrick's Sword: 254
Uber Falcon Blade: 199 x2

When I switched from the highest damage sword to the falcon sword I noticed that the two combined attacks were higher than the one attack from the highest damage sword. That's why I switched.

But I think it is fair to say that if Sword A does more damage than two shots with a Falcon sword then it doesn't make sense to use it. Unless you're fighting metal monsters, then using your metal attack twice is very useful.

*edit* Beaten to it!

falcon slashing with a UFB also does 4 hits.

the S-class sword has sap on it. i'm probably gonna switch my ranger to swords to use it so that i don't have to use helm splitter, plus falcon slash will give me 2 times to sap and it criticals, i don't think helm splitter can critical.

Wow, just got my ass handed to me in the
Palace
. Guess I need to turn my Mage back to a Priest, because I definitely need a healer in that boss battle. That and I think I'll go back to the first grotto and see if I can get another drop from Equinox, in the form of a map.

Just got my first super rare drop from Elusid.
The sensible sandles, that boost MP and regains it too.
Sweetness. Four more mini medals til the dragon robe.

I need to get back to grottoes for a few more mini medals, I think I'm 3 away from the dragon robe.

I'm starting to think I won't be able to get 75% alchenomicon completion, which is a bummer. But who knows, maybe I'll get some lucky drops in some grottoes a few months from now. Just about halfway done with the convenient torso stuff, and I'm not yet at 60%, with arms, legs, feet and accessories to go.

thinking about using an Action Replay solely for getting 30 vistors into the quester's rest. Heck, it would be the only reason I purchase it. I simply want to enjoy all the game has to offer and my location almost guarantees I won't unless I spend several hundred dollars to travel to a gaming convention.

I can appreciate where you're coming from.

But, rather than wasting time and money on Action Replay, you can keep canvassing the same people or person to get to 30 and 50. All you need to do is canvas for them, talk to them, clear them from your guest book (talk to Erinn), and repeat. Each time counts as another guest.

I'm hoping to get my fifty in Cleveland/Akron, but if I don't, myself and the co-workers are going to collaborate. :D

That or send your system and game to CAGs in a big city and have them tag for you. And of course pay them for their time and effort. As well as pray to God they are honest people.

You need 30 people actually in your guestbook to get the inn upgrade. The canvass/delete trick only works for the accolades.

Are there any more Boston-area events planned or did I miss the boat last week?

I was too busy getting close to 50 tags in Japan
