Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - For Liquid Metal we would Slime!

This week's DQVC sale is Seven Days of Scary Sale. They mentioned rare items and a 3-piece skeleton outfit.

Two quests again this week, both of which are marked story.

No new guest.

I had to dig into my bank account for the Reckless Necklace and Thug Boots this morning. Only 93k left! Need to get back to spelunking.

OR, Ear Cosy alchemy loop until you get to 320k, then Gold Mail alchemy loot until ??? = profit.

I thought the idea awesomely appealing until I actually DID one of the Ear Cosy trips. The shops to Slurry Quay and Porth Llaffan aren't bad, but walking *all* the way across Batsureg? Then you can only make 9 at a time, up to 99, before you have to do it all again?

My spreadsheet on "how many loops would it take to get x amount of money where y is your starting amount" was pretty much all for naught. :/
I think I got a nice bit of stuff today, now time to work on getting the money to get it.

Thug Boots
Muscle Belt
Skull Ring
Thug's Mug
Fortunately I had found a Thug's Mug in a blue chest in a grotto - I didn't realize how much it cost so I'm glad I found it. The only other "new" thing I had in my store was the Thug's Boot which I bought.

'splain, please! I need money desperately if anything better shows up. I think I have about 10K banked right now.

My store was very good today.
Got a reckless necklace and a skull ring.
Already had the jolly roger jumper shirt.

My girl Mage looks pretty cool.
Ill post some pics soon.

I am done with this game. I just have no interest in playing it anymore. I have 66 hours, that should be enough.

I'm still going to the Simons mall event next week to hopefully score a T-shirt.

There are two recipes with which you are able to make a lot of money quite
quickly. For both of these recipes, you will be able to purchase all of the
required ingredients from shops, create the new item with them, and sell this
new item to an NPC for a profit greater than the cost of the combined sum of
the ingredients. Since you are buying all of the ingredients from NPCs, the
intial investment cost is quite high (especially when you start producing
large quantities). The maximum you can buy/sell per trip is 99.

Head #35) Ear cosy
= Fur hood x 1 + Bunny tail x 1 + Lambswool x 1

Fur hood: Slurry Quay 550g
Bunny tail: Porth Llaffan 240g
Lambswool: Batsureg 180g
----
Total: 970g

Sell Ear cosy to NPC for: 1200g

Profit: 230g

Initial investment x99: 96030g
Profit x99: 22770g

Torso #7) Gold mail
= Silver mail x 1 + Gold ring x 1 + Gold bracer x 1

Silver mail: Bloomingdale 4000g
Gold ring: Porth Llaffan 220g
Gold Bracer: Porth Llaffan 350g
----
Total: 4570g

Sell Gold mail to NPC for: 4900g

Profit: 330g

Initial investment x99: 452430g

Profit x99: 32670g
It is, unfortunately, something that is only really lucrative if you have the money laying around. ON the other hand, you could slowly build up the cash needed by doing 20-30 combines at a time using your 10k base, so who knows?

With a 10k start, you can make 10, getting you 2.3k profit. At the 10th loop, with 65k, you could make 67. At the 12th, you'd be making 99 of them for a profit of ~23k each time. By the 22nd, you'd have 320k to start with, so you might as well go on to Gold Mail, where you can make at least 68; at which you, you can start earning more profit from that instead of the Ear Cosies.

It's a *really* tedious process, though. Gold Mail isn't as bad since two of the ingredients are in one place...but only do this if you're pretty desperate and you have nothing to do for a while.

Also, at when you get 548,460 Gold, you have enough to alchemize 99 of both with one trip, getting you a profit of 55440...or about 10%.

I keep at least 100k in the bank at all times.
I have 156k now.

Fighting Night Knight to try and get a Skull Helm to get a Sun Crown. So far I have 10 Dark Shields as that his other drop. But I'll keep at it until I get it. I shall overcome.

I did the ear cosy thing once (well, a bunch of times until I was able to do 99 at once - which I still have in my inventory). It would be worth it if you didn't have to alchemize 9 items at a time. It doesn't take that long, but it's annoying enough that I'd rather just accumulate money through the course of exploration and other grinding, which is generally enough. Just fighting low level enemies for drops for an hour or two netted me 40k.

Interesting read... I wish I had more time to play this game. When I do have extra time this is all I play...good advice on switching classes and lvling up quicker. But I think I need to find these liquid metal slimes before I start doing that...metal medly's in bad cave took me about an hour to get a character from lvl 1 to 20.

I've been to the gamestop and bb events so far...and am planning to go to the simon mall event too. Need 13 more tags to upgrade my inn... man, hm I might sell my extra t-shirt on ebay...

The LMS are actually pretty easy to "farm" in The Bowhole.

Yeah, I came to the same realization after turning my 10K into 30K using the ear cosys. I'd rather just run around and fight things and get exp and money that way. It could even be part of the metal slime hunting - just fight some other stuff while you are looking for them. This can also be combined with various weapon and class quests (like the shield blocking one which took me a while last night). Just doing the alchemy stuff doesn't get you any further on those fronts, so I'd rather multitask, even if it means slightly longer to get the money I need.

So, did I see someone say a Reckless Necklace was offered by the DQVC this week (Edit: yes, it was you in fact, Botticus ;))? I haven't seen that yet, but I guess I will want to buy one of these, right? I have one from a chest or drop (I just got to the Palace so I think it was from there). But looking at my alchemy recipes it seems you need it for the Lucky Pendant which itself has multiple uses. Though I'm guessing the other limiting factor will be Saints Ashes.

Besides, I presume, Saints Ashes, what are the other alchemy items I shouldn't waste? I've been making stuff when I get all the ingredients but I will want to hold off if there is a particular ingredient that is extremely limited.

Also, a spoiler-free question about the end-game. Like I said, I'm at the Palace. I've explored it pretty thoroughly but held off going up the last set of stairs because it appeared that one of the bosses (the third of those 3 guys, maybe?) was standing there. For those who have finished the game, how close to the end am I at that point? If that is the end or very near it, I might want to back off and finish some other quests and character leveling first.

OK, if I'm near the end, then I have a question about the Sage quest:
I have to beat 5 (or so) Great Trolls with Frizz to unlock the Sage vocation. Problem is, I have yet to see a "Great Troll". I have regular Trolls and "Boss Trolls" but no Great Trolls. Are they still ahead of me, or did I just miss them somewhere - or are they grotto-only beasts? I still have a lot of empty slots in my monster list so I was thinking I wasn't too close to the end because of that. And note that I encountered many new ones in the advanced grottos I got from the Best Buy event - I still haven't found the "normal haunt" for many of those.

You still have one final dungeon to go, and the Great Trolls can be found there.

OK, good to know, thanks. So I'll push on past the next boss that is in my way, go after the trolls, then maybe back out and do other stuff before finishing up.

I'm also assuming that like all the other DQ games, I will get the ability to free-fly anywhere at some point (probably post-game)? I see all this stuff teasing me from up on plateaus and such ;). I remember in DQ VIII one of the best metal slime grinding spots was a place you couldn't reach till you could fly. I spent many hours up there grinding to I could beat the Dragovian trials.

:) yea those plateaus are such a tease! I actually got to go to one at the gamestop event cause there was a kid who could take us there. I wish I could spent awhile lvling up...would have been nice! ....actually reminds me that I never completely finished the dragovian trials in dq8.

I was going to drive to the one 2 hours away from me, until I checked and realized it's on a Friday!! Who made the great decision not to have it on a weekend? I guess they don't figure working adults would want to go.

I was in a grotto fighting Shogum and was just bout to beat him.
I deciced to Half Inch him so I could get the Star'S Suit for Alchemy.
After about 7 turns it worked and I got the Supernatural Glasses.
So I guess you can Half Inch there rare drops too.
Which Is sweet to know.

I also beat Baramos after the second try. Can't wait to level up my Sgaes so they can learn Magic Barrier. Will help greatly for Atlas.

io- Half Inch Genie Sagunie right at the entrance of the Realm of the Amighty after you beat the palace. They are green and carry Saint's Ashes. They also carry Agility Rings which are helpful for getting Life Bracers.

Also a lot of monsters can only be found in Grotto's including many bosses.

He might be able to luck into them in Western Coffinwell. I've fought 3 that way. There's an island that they appear on between Eastern Coffinwell and Zere. It's the island that's in the background when you fight the Wight Knight.

Bummer, I prefer when a party is made up of characters that either have their own plots or are part of the main story. I'm not too crazy about wandering around with a group of random/one-dimensional characters.

Having said that, I am really liking this game. I just beat the second "boss" and can't put the game down, even in the face of a tremendous back

Thanks, I stopped just short of that last night, so tonight I can try that.

I did buy the Reckless Necklace from the DQVC last night. I was led to believe it would be expensive - turned out only to be 3600. That's nothing. Now I have two of them and I guess I should turn one into a Lucky Pendant. I currently have 3 Saints Ashes.

Hmmm, I may have seen those in a grotto too.

As for the Great Trolls being in the later part of the Palace (after beating the third of the 3 minibosses), uh, I didn't see them. There were still just "Boss Trolls" there and just to be sure there wasn't a typo in the game (Sage quest is to beat "great trolls" but maybe they meant Boss Trolls) I killed one with Frizz - no indication that it counted, so I'm guessing they aren't it. Or are they up there in the Realm? I didn't think there would be much to see up there as it was very short when I went through it earlier.

You know, I felt this way at first, too, but after a while I really started to like having my own characters. You can control what they are completely and you don't have to worry about them coming and going like in previous games (when you'd lose a character due to a story event and were never sure you'd ever get them back). So you can invest in each one and not worry about what might happen to them. Don't worry, you'll have the faerie for the chatter ;). By the way, that smart-ass mouthed off at me last night about wasting time "boosting my level" and maybe if I hadn't done that we could have saved
Aquila
. I thought that was pretty funny. So far the end-game bosses have been pretty damn easy, so I guess I did boost a fair amount (3 of my chars are level 40-45 now, with just my recently-acquired Paladin under 30). I'd like to get the Sage unlocked before the end but I may just finish up and do that afterwards.

Sorry, when I saw your post after I had said I stopped before the boss at the top of the stairs in the palace I took the dungeon after that (which was truly a dungeon as opposed to the rest of the palace) to be the "final" one. Is there a dungeon in the Realm of the Almighty? I thought I'd just be going up the 2 or 3 paths up there again. You are saying it is much larger now? I guess it changes, or do we end up going somewhere else entirely?

There's a whole new area you haven't seen yet, fear not!

As has been said, Saint's Ashes aren't impossible to come by, since they can be stolen/dropped by the genie sanguinis. The Reckless Necklaces are only available in random blue chests so they're by far the limiting factor. Outside of one-off equipment that is only needed for a certain recipe, I'd say Reckless Necklaces are really one of the only limiting factors in alchemy since the Lucky Pendants are needed for an ingredient in a lot of top tier equipment.

Most of the ingredients that you might want to hold onto are just needed in ridiculous volume. Flurry feathers and fresh water, I'm looking at you! They're pretty easy to come by stealing but it takes some time, and the spawn points on the map are terrible - 2-4 every few game days. And I need ~20 of each to finish off my torso armor alchemy.

Alright, time to show off again!

By now my characters are just overflowing with elite equipment, since I've spent way more time grinding for gear than running PKJs (as evidenced by being only on my first level of revocation). Most importantly (to me anyway) all of this armor was gotten on my own (no Japanese maps, no hoimi table tricks) and represents now over 200 hours of slogging through the game. Not sure when I'll slow down, if ever.

Everyone is at Level 99 in their primary class. They have also been revocating and working up second classes for skill points. Juliet and Titania have both done so already, with Priest and Thief respectively.

Spoiler tagging the pics in case anyone doesn't want the high end gear spoiled:
[IMG-L=5866]17335[/IMG-L]

Lash is now rocking almost all of the top gear. Victorious Armor and Vesta Gauntlets are the base items for the top gear, and Immortal Trousers and Basilic Boots are the 2nd level. Just waiting for new Legacy maps to get the right orbs. He has Erdrick's sword too, but I use Uber Falcon mostly for the 4x Falcon slash. Still waiting to find more elite weapons (I have the elite boomerang and bow, but none so far that my characters use)

[IMG-L=5866]17333[/IMG-L]

Juliet is now rocking the Brain drainer, which is the base elite shield. The Spring breeze hat is also top tier. Celestria's Raiment is the highest Magical Mending armor in the game, and the rest of her gear is classic Sage. The Lifesaving Medal is for revocating her as a priest.

[IMG-L=5866]17336[/IMG-L]

Damien is rocking chrome. He's got the Metal King Spear and Helm, and will have the Metal King Shield once I find another Slime Crown. He's also rocking the base elite boots, which I haven't updated yet. I need to improve his armor and legs.

[IMG-L=5866]17337[/IMG-L]

Titania also has a Brain Drainer, as well as the base elite Tropotoga. Other than that her equipment is pretty good but not elite. Honor Among Thieves is for revocating as a Thief, and gives a huge boost to stealing.

Alright, so you guys who have gone a lot further than me, what is the best use for the reckless necklace/lucky pendants? Is there anything I should be making now with it, or should I hold off?

You must have had a lot more Reckless Necklaces than I have.

Monarchic marks require lucky pendants, and the marks are used for at least half a dozen recipes. I think I did use my only one to make a Goddess Ring or something else. That said, at that point you're more looking for equipment that looks better than has improved stats, so it's not like they're important to acquire.

I made all the royal gear (with Monarchic Marks) but by the time I did I already had much better stuff. It's not bad (and it looks nice) but I'm not sure it's worth wasting all your Lucky Pendants.

yeah i can see them. cool stuff, man =) when i see your characters i feel like i have a long way to go in terms of getting really cool-looking equipment. i gave one of my gladiators the bikini stuff just so i can be perverted. haha.

i used kawasaki lockers to get rank S weapons but i swear, some of the non rank S weapons look a lot better.

still farming skill points... once i max out everyone's class ability, gonna work out on finish each class's quest to get the books. i also feel like it's a waste to revocate anyone who isn't the main character more than once in one class.

Just can't bring myself to do this, though certainly it's perfectly legitimate.

I need to expand the grottos I'm running to try to get the rank S weapons I need. I have the boomerang, the bow, and got the hammer last night, but I don't use any of those weapons and don't really feel like switching. Hopefully I'll find them eventually.

Got a Dangerous Bustier in a blue chest but don't want to give it to the lady since I already have the Murky Gloves. My Mage looks scandalous with the Sizzling Bikini Bottoms. Ill post pics later today.

Seeing those pics makes me jealous. I wish I could find some cool stuff like that.
I've found a few but nothing awesome yet. Though my levels are getting higher.
My main guys is 67 and my highest is 71. Slowing working on leveling up my Priest into my Sage.
