EB Games raising the prices of certain new releases by 5 dollars

Well that blows, but I was expecting it in the not-too-distant future. Canadian dollar is on a downward trend and still considered overvalued.
 
Just a heads up. It's not just EBGames, Archambault is also doing this. I saw Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze on their site for $54.99.

 
Most other retailers seem to have the prices still set at the regular pricing, so I'm not quite sure if this is going to be widespread, or if it's just EB that's taking these actions. 

Guess time will tell.

Lets just hope this is just one of those EB being EB moments though and not the begining of a trend.
 
It's old-hat for EBgames to pull this with Nintendo-published releases.

If this is a trend though for Canadian retailers, I guess that's another foot into the digital circle for me.

I seriously doubt it's just EBGames. Most likely other retailers will follow suit with this as well. Let's not jump the gun here, and use this as another excuse to not buy from EBGames.

The Canadian dollar has been dropping a lot lately, and I wouldn't be surprised other retailers follow suit.

OmegaChaos brings up a pretty good point. I guess we can only hope the likes of Best Buy and Wal-mart don't follow suit.

The good thing is, it's only a select few of games right now. The rest are still at their original prices.

I went through EB Games's pre-order binder and counted nearly 100 SKUs that had increased by $5-$10.  Looks like $64.99 is the new norm for 2014.  3DS and Vita games were $44.99.  My Future Shop E3 2013 pre-orders are suddenly more valuable.

 
Key word here being "currently". Though, I do hope they don't increase them. I'm just mad that I usually use trade in promotions to get a major bulk of my games.

Wait, wait. $10 too? Ugh. I'm even more mad that Conception II went up to $44.99. Only a few 3DS games on their site were raised though.

 
InFamous CE is still the same price. I should pre-order it before they bump that. I'm trying to think of all the CE's I would want this year... any chance the E3 sale is still on for 2014?

Somewhat sure EB/FS/BB all don't price guarantee preorders. So if you want to pull the trigger now in hopes of avoiding a bump up you'll have to use Amazon.

Well I'll be damned :/ I maintain my point that there's enough reasons to steer clear of EB as a general rule, if they don't price protect their pre-orders (is that true!?) then there's yet another one for ya :p (or for me at least)

I was wondering the same thing. My gut tells me this past one was the last :( Luckily I pre-ordered the hell out of pretty much any game I even thought I might want, but I know I'll be sad not to be able to do it again this year if that ends up being the case. I've been preparing to build a PC sometime this year or next. If console gaming gets that much more expensive this year, it'll just act as an added incentive. Btw, is it just me or is BB not even offering 10$ Reward Certificates with pre-order games anymore either?

BB and FS definitely do, from the BB pre-order faq:

"Pre-Order Guarantee. Our Pre-Order Guarantee ensures that if the price of an item you pre-ordered drops before it ships, you will automatically be charged the lower price. It also ensures that if you pre-ordered your item at $49.99 and the price rises to $59.99, you still only pay $49.99."

I don't know about EB though, but locking down a price with FS/BB will work. And if you're doing so online you can cancel anytime before the order starts the shipping process. So yea if someone's nervous about a price increase, that's not a bad option.
 
I hate to slag a independent games store but VGP isn't really a alternative since even if they stay 5$ cheaper shipping (which is about 5 $ every 50) would kill the difference. They're the only canadian retailer that has sorcery saga but I don't want to pay 10$ shipping on a 50 dollar vita game.

"Pre-Order Guarantee. Our Pre-Order Guarantee ensures that if the price of an item you pre-ordered drops before it ships, you will automatically be charged the lower price. It also ensures that if you pre-ordered your item at $49.99 and the price rises to $59.99, you still only pay $49.99."

I honestly don't see why people keep singling out EBGames as a terrible store, Best Buy/Futureshop/etc are all just as bad. At least EBGames offers niche titles, and when you pre-order those titles they're guaranteed to have them on release. I've gone numerous times with Best Buy/Futureshop, and they usually don't have the game, or I'd have to wait an extra week or so.

Nah, they stopped in the fall of 2013. You still get reward points, and 2x the points if you're in the gamer club thing.

VGP only charges me $2.99 for S&H.

 
Looking at stuff I'll Amazon for. Atelier Escha and Logy is there for the US MSRP of $50, it's not on any other major retailers yet, and it'll most likely be corrected to CAD whenever everybody else gets around to offering it. Conception II is just at EB and Amazon, and EB has marked it up.

Good to know, I might shift some of my EB orders over if I need to. I'll wander into my local EB on my weekend and ask if they're honoring the time of placement pre-order prices, if nobody else figures it out. But they have bumped prices up on me in the past... It looks like EBgames.ca should honor our orders, as I have some random stuff on there that they haven't bumped up.

Conception II is just at EB and Amazon, and EB has marked it up.

VGP has it as well. I don't trust Futureshop/Best Buy with niche titles honestly.

EB Games does not discount games if a cheaper price was quoted before launch; the price charged is the price of the item at time of pickup.

The plot thickens: many games available for pre-order have jumped up by another $5 at EB Games today, making the new standard $69.99, although some are still listed at $64.99 and others have stayed at $59.99 for now. The Watch_Dogs Collector's Edition started at $129.99, moved to $139.99 last weekend and has progressed to $149.99.

I contend that any game worth paying $59.99 for is still worth $69.99, as gaming already offers excellent bang for your buck, but this is nevertheless a bitter development.

 
You sure about that? I called up an EBGames in Montreal, and was told the price I did the 2 for 1 trade in at the time, is the one I get it for. Meaning, if I traded 2 games for Lightning Returns, I get it for the $60.

 
Yes, they'll honor the trade deal as you used a promo that bumped the value to pay everything. But historically, if you simply traded in 10 $6TIV games or handed them $60 cash, you'd still owe them $5 at pickup.

They will honor the trade deal, but it is important to note that the trade deal is not "Trade 2, Get it Free"; it's "Trade 2, Get $60" (in reality, it's Trade 2, Get $59.99). Because of that subtle difference in the way it's always been advertised, you will still owe $5 plus tax at time of pickup.

Are you sure? I was told I wouldn't have to pay the $5 difference. Either way, what is the cause of this increase? I was told by a few people, it probably has something to do with the dollar being low.

 
This is not new. EB Games does this randomly. I remember specific examples, like Pokemon Conquest for DS was $5 more than MSRP and everywhere else. It was sold out everywhere else though, so I had to go to EB.

Not probably, that's it. Our $ has dropped recently and is worth 10% less than USD now, before long everybody will be charging more for everything. Anyone not expecting this when looking at our $ is stupid.

It would also be lovely for them to lower their prices much quicker when / if CAD reaches USD parity once more. Last time, it took almost a year of media articles and customer complaints on 'we're at par, why is everything still so expensive' to see any sort of price drops. Always so quick to raise the price, but not drop it. Not that it's surprising, but that's where it draws some ire from me.

Certainly. But think of it from their perspective. Awareness of increased pricing would cause customers to maybe go elsewhere, or outright not buy whatever they were considering. So they'll try and keep this quite, and the ignorant customers probably won't notice or care that they're being charged more.

 
Several already available games increased by $5 today at EB Games, and I expect other titles will slowly be increased over time, so it's not just future titles that are getting the price increase.

Is the amount of tax owed on the full price of the game or just the $5?

Amazon is a warehouse, they do not mark up their prices to make profit like brick and mortar stores like EB Games and Best Buy do. That's the reason you will never see anything priced higher at Amazon (excluding sales).
