Just curious if this has happened to anyone else... it seems like it just started happening recently to me, and to a friend in the area as well.

Here's the deal... I call up EB or GS. I ask them do they have "xxx game". For instance, we'll say Shadow Hearts: From the New World, since it's one of the ones I used. Guy looks, says "Yea we have it", and I say "Cool, does it come with the box and the manual?"

Guy says "I don't know, but the game is flawless, it plays like new and has a 90 day return policy." I say "Ok, but does it have the case or the manual?" He then says "It would take me too long to find them, the game should be good enough since it's like new and has a 90 day return policy". Keep in mind this store is 25 minutes away, and I would like to take advantage of the buy 2 get 1 free with other stuff their store supposedly has in stock.

At this point, I'm kind of pissed, I've been in this Gamestop and you can easily find what you want in under a minute. I then tell him "Look, I'm 25 minutes away from your store, and I really don't want to drive up there to find some dvd only piece of garbage when I can just go down the street and get the game brand new for $5 more". He then says "Ok, fine, I'll look" and he comes back and tells me "Oh... I guess it was traded in game only". At which point I said some things and hung up the phone.

An EB I call at 8:40 pm tells me a game is in stock, but "We're closing and I can't find the case / manual, the game is flawless it should work fine". I know this store, it's pretty much dead all the time and there are 20 minutes until they close! I asked him if I called back tommorrow morning would the guy then be more helpful, to which he said "Probably".

I won't even tell you all the story of how a guy told me he had all three Shadow Hearts games, yet didn't have time to get the cases / manuals. A friend goes in there, not only did they not have cases / manuals for the games, they didn't even have 2 out of the 3 games.

Is this common practice now to push disc only games? I don't want to drop $35 - $45 on used games and have to waste gas to go up there because these employees are too unorganized / lazy to at least check on the condition of the games. Maybe this is just my area, but it's a weird coincendence that about 4 stores all pretty much refused to check on case / manual and just pushed a dvd only copy.

EDIT: I know these stores can get busy, but never once was I told "Hey, we're too busy right now, blah blah blah", it was always just them pushing the dvd only copy over and over. Felt like I was at Best Buy getting shoved a service plan down my throat. Anyways, there are always two people at EB / GS from what I've seen, one working and one not doing anything.

Probably an email to the coporate may help a long way...

Wait! I emailed them 3 times over the last 3 weeks and they never replied.

Like employer, like employee :shame:

It's alarming the number of people that (apparently) buy a new game, and then immediately toss the case and booklet in the trash. And I find it highly unlikely that those same people are trading in "flawless" disks.

Since when did 4 stores out of 2,000 indicate that this is a (stupid) company wide policy? ;)

Wow, that is some poor service. Glad that doesn't come from any of the stores in my area. Granted, I work for GS here, but we have 7 stores in town and none of them behave like that at all. Almost all of them are very helpful, granted, not all stores are perfect. Sometimes they get busy and really can't search for it. I'd just call back again in a little bit and ask again, you might get someone different on the line that is more helpful.

You would be surprised. I've had some customers come in with CD wallets of games for trade, all in great condition. Some people just could care less about the case, or perhaps they don't have the space for them?

Well I just called now and they refused to even answer the phone for me. Bunch of fuckers.

This was the thing... it wasn't "I'm sorry, we're too busy" it was just "Hey, this game is flawless... cmon, this game is perfect, 90 day warranty... it takes a long time to find a case / manual.... but the game will run perfectly"

One store that I've been in numerous times at around 8:40 that is dead, told me it was closing time..? Tommorrow morning, are they going to tell me "Sorry guy, we just opened, call back later." Gas is expensive, I don't need to waste it going 35 minutes up just to see "Oh, sorry, its game only, too bad".

Actually, they all answered "EBgames (or Gamestop), how can I help you"?

Was kind of surprising.

- As to the point of the post, I was just seeing if this was some kind of EB / GS thing, or maybe this is just some kind of DM's doing, since it was weird that 4 stores all acted the same.

Local Gamestop here is a champ, along with the EB in Pinellas Park... I mean, if I'm throwing down a $50 for Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (hypothetical) it better come with everything.

i know what youre saying but if gas is so expensive why dont you buy it new for $5 more and not drive 35 minutes?

seems simple to me

If I buy it new, it's not qualified for the buy 2 get 1 free.

As I said in the OP.

lol "but the game is flawless!"

You can bet that means it is disc only with several scratches if you hear that line.

Thats funny, we don't even offer the 90 day warranty on used games anymore. They get 30 days and you also have the option for the extended warranty for $1-3. I don't know what to tell you about the laziness of them, but maybe ask to speak to the manager on duty and that might help. It could also backfire since the one you are talking to is the manager.

terrible service. lazy and dumb.

what i am surprised with is that at some EB's I've gone to their disc-only stuff goes for the exact same price as used/complete.

thats the part that gets me. do they give the same credit for complete vs. disc only games?

Yep.

It usually takes me at least 15 minutes to find the case to a game in my store when a customer comes up to the counter and asks to buy a game. We alphabetize everything but within an hour of opening, the store is chaos. I'm not gonna spend 15 minutes to look for a case and manual when I have a line of customers I'm supposed to serve.

Most games that come in disc only that are in mint are stole. I can bet you any amount of money that the person who trades those in get's cash all the time. When I find new games used on GS store locator and see what area they are in I can tell if they are stolen or not.

As for the OP's question, If someone asks me over the phone if the game comes complete, I will find out right away since I am just like that person. Everytime someone buys a used game I show them the disc before they purchase it. That way they see I care about their business and I know how it is to buy used stuff.

I wouldn't be surprised if EB/Gamestop starts tossing dvd manuals or cases at least. It makes sense (in their evil, corporate way) to save the storage space and toss in a litho that has their own logo on it instead of the publisher's logo.

God, I hate gamestop/EB.

If they would simply disappear from the face of the earth, I would not mind at all...

My experience yesterday:
Walked in looking to take advantage of the B2G1 free sale. I looked online, and this store was supposed to have Ultimate Spiderman, Pac N Roll, and Puyo Pop all used. So, I go through their DS games, and find only the Puyo Pop case (used). The other two, don't have any cases (used), but plenty of (new but opened:bomb: ). So, I walk to the counter, and ask the guy where the cases are for Ultimate Spiderman and Pac n Roll, and he tells me that I need to search for the cases, and if I don't find them, he'll have to sell them to me 'cart only' . Never did he offer to even help me look.
So, after a while I gave up. I ended up buying Puyo Pop (used, but complete), and Spiderman (new but opened :bomb: , I hate these stores).

I dont like GS or EB either, but I can kinda see why they wouldnt go look for a case and manual for someone on the phone. Like Vietgurl said, maybe they were busy and there were customers in the store.

You have to remember that employees of these stores arent exactly overpaid. If I was working at an EB or GS store, I wouldnt want to go look for cases/manuals for someone on the phone either. How do they know you will come in to buy those games after they do all that legwork? Calling the store over and over and asking employees to check on the condition of used games is being a borderline nusaince customer imo.

They way I look at it is that Im on my own in those stores. I look thru the stacks and if theres no manual in the case, I'll ask them to look for that behind the counter, but Im in the store and I will buy the game if they find the manual for it.

I think the op may have too high of expectations when it comes to the level of service you get from an employees of a game store. I dont expect anything from them, and that way I am never dissapointed.

All the eb games and gamestops by my house are pretty cool. I ask this guy to look for an TED:Oblivion cause i couldn't find it in the rack and it took him about a minute to find one. They always have everything in order and are quick to look for something.

Gamestop could solve this problem by taking only complete game and actually guaranteeing the quality of the disc by actaully looking at in during trade-ins. There were a few times I traded in games and they didn't look at the disc. I only trade in stuff that is in excellent condition but they still should have checked my stuff.

I wouldn't say stop taking in disc only, since there are always people who don't care about complete copies, but at least adjust a trade-in value accordingly. They can't use the excuse that the game is the same whether disc-only or complete, if they loosely follow supply and demand (e.g. eBay prices). Meaning, if they're going to say that the market allows them to charge 39.99 for RE2 on GC, then they need to admit that the buyer's market for a disc-only copy of RE2 is a lot smaller than for a complete copy of RE2, so the price should be lower.

And slightly off-topic, I just got a call from the new GameStop DM responding to a complaint I made like 2 months ago.

Considering I just called two different EB's this morning, asking for games, and the employees were more then happy to tell me the condition of all of them, no, I don't feel like I have too high of expectations.

The same store I called last night at closing, told me again this morning at 10:15 am "uh... it will take me at least an hour to find the case for it if we have it". What the hell... I really doubt a non mall store is packed full of people 15 minutes after they open.

That $17.99 World of Outlaws is useless if it's disc only, however if it's complete its worth quite a bit. Why should I waste the gas and take a gamble driving down there when the employee should just go look at the rack?

Just because someone is minimum wage dosen't mean they have to put in a minimum amount of effort.

Hmmmmmmm.........

the rare times i do buy used from a game store its almost always gamecrazy, i have yet to deal with a jackass employee at any of their locations, ive been given throw ins when making purchases and even told when they have a better looking copy of something that ive picked out.
also i like how the cases/instructions are on the rack and can be inspected.

on another note, i spent about 15 minutes in a local gc a couple days ago and literally wanted to choke two of the customers out. i swear to god these people are jackasses. im sure dealing with dipshits all day jades the employees a little bit when it comes to dealing with customers that shouldnt be in bellview.

hehehe, when I was in High School and did work for minimum age my motte was "minimum wage = minimum work"

Im with you tho. It would be nice if all employee were as nice and accomodating as the ones you spoke to this morning. I feel you on saving the time and gas and all that. I just think that if you expect all employees at all stores to be like that your asking for dissapointment.

I went to my local EB last Sunday morning to grab some buy2get1free stuff and the guy there was a total asshat. He musta been new cos I'd never seen him before. As he was taking 20 minutes to ring me up, I noticed some new sealed PS1 games on a shelf behind the counter. But I couldnt really read the titles too well. So I asked him if he could let me take a peek around the counter or grab a pile and let me look thru them (we were the only 2 ppl in the store).

He says 'they are the same games we have out on the shelf in the PS1 section' which was bullshit cos I looked thru every game in their ps1 section not 5 minutes before. So I asked him if there were any Final Fantasy games in the pile. Without even turnig to look at them he says 'no'. Which was more bullshit cos I could make out that one of the games said 'Finall Fantast -something' and it was not a GH title. And it looked to have roman numerals after the FF, meaning it was 7,8, or 9.

But by that point I had spent enough and didnt want to argue with the asshole so I left. But I may have walked away from a sealed FFVII non GH version. I wonder what you would have done in that situation? lol

I think everyone should work retail at least once in their life so they know how NOT to act to employees. Most customers are ok but there are still way too many asses out there.

I agree. But when I worked at EB for holiday sales, most of the customers were nice to me strangely enough, but really rude to the other employees. I think it had to do with me being really happy to be there and help customers.
Then when I worked at Publix, customers seemed to disrespect me more. My first week I had a guy yell at me for hurrying the bagger by sliding the groceries down to the bagger. o_O

Except for helping customers, that's my motto. It's not their fault that I get paid shittily.

Clean up? fuck THAT SHIT!
hehehe, when I was in High School and did work for minimum age my motte was "minimum wage = minimum work"
I do the minimum work whether or not I'm being paid the minimum wage, especially at a job like EB because I have no opportunity for advancement (I'm a part timer; I'm not going to become an assistant manager or a manager, lol). Even at other jobs, I only do enough so that I don't get fired; the only time when I do more than I need to is when I'm looking for a promotion or a pay raise.

It's like back in high school, when A-'s were the same as A's and A+'s, I usually got a 90% in my classes. I'd have something around a 98% and near the end, I'd calculate how many homework assignments I can miss and how badly I can do on tests so I can still get an A on my report card and then I'd start enjoying life . I actually got a 110% in precalc near the middle of a semester once because everyone else was doing so poorly and my teacher had to offer extra credit so half of his class wouldn't fail; I skipped a test, two quizzes, and all the homework assignments for the rest of the semester and came out with a 91%. I got accepted to the same schools as those who worked extra hard to get that 99.9% in their classes and now I use this philosophy for work too, haha. This is going to come back to bite me in the ass one day....

you gotta call their customer service people to get any action. emailing them really doesn't do anything. i don't know eb's number, but gs is 1-800-883-8895. it could be the same for eb for all i know.

My experience with EB / Gamestop has been average to usually very poor. I've had better luck with my local Gamecrazy. No matter how busy they are they are always willing to check on games for me because I am picky about the games I buy (New only and must be in original factory shrinkwrap) When i ask if they have a game still wrapped at EB they always give me the sphiel about the opened ones are new and in perfect condition, blah blah blah and when i tell them no for the 100th time they usually roll their eyes and check. If any EB workers are reading this, I am sorry made you guys work. What I don't understand is how EB can get away with selling an opened game as new. As far as I am concerned once a game has been opened and removed from it's case it's used. No matter if it's been played or not and how are we supposed to know if it's been played or not? We're just supposed to take their word on it? I know they're are some probably great EB workers somewhere who are gamers just like me and treat customers with respect and courtesy but unfortunately I haven't met one.
