ECA Update: Amazon discount gone "for the time being"; in process of self-destruction

I preordered GoW3 w/ ECA and want to cancel to preorder the Ultimate Edition, which just appeared in my Gold Box. Is there any way I could cancel the regular preorder and get the ECA code back and use that on the UE?

When you cancel, the code should automatically go back to your account so that when you place the new order, the discount should automatically be re-applied without having to enter any promo code at all.

I wouldn't be so sure, I had unused codes on my account and they're now gone. I then tried canceling a preorder to do what you just told him to do and it removed the code completely leaving no discount.

De-confirmed ;). I just checked and the 'J' code I've had sitting on my account for weeks is still there. The other codes, of course, expired long ago so if it was one of those on your preorder you wouldn't get it back.

I had fully expected the 'J' codes to expire on Nov 1st as they seem to give a 30-day grace period for these codes, but I'm glad it is still there. I just haven't bought anything from Amazon in like 3 weeks so there it will remain until I see a need for it. One reason is that I preordered pretty much all I wanted through 2010 a few months back when I first signed up for ECA plus had $30 trade-in promo coupons to use.

But for sure there will have to be a decent DotD or lightning deal to use it on sooner or later.

Yeah, I'm glad I stocked up on codes the first time there was downtime because I've still got roughly five tied to the account. Hoping they last til BF at least or any other hot deals that pop up this year.

I've got something weird happening too Kirin, I only had 2 codes linked to my account, but I've made about 5 orders now, and I just put something in my cart to check and I'm still getting 10% off. I'm sooo not complaining (got Ratchet & Clack for $37, quick pick, price drop $49.99, ECA) but is this happening to anyone else?

Apparently I still have some valid too but the discount won't appear if in the same order I have items sold by amazon and fulfilled by amazon sold by someone else. I knew that it didn't work on items not technically sold by amazon but I didn't know that you couldn't have them in your order also and it not work on the amazon as the seller items.

I am sorry if this is the wrong place to post. I am getting rid of a charge card and I wanted to cancel the reccuring billing on my ECA account.

I posted there and no one would even respond. I know many people here are ECA members, so maybe some kind hearted soul can help me.

Normally to cancel the ECA account, I would go to the view button and scroll down. The cancel option would be there. But now it isn't. All that is there is,
Expiring roles

ECA Full Membership This role will expire on 10/13/2010 - 21:20

So can anyone help me? Where has the cancel option been moved to? I really don't want any future hassle with auto renewal bs.

Thanks for any info.

Since it's no longer a "REOCCURRING" fee or role, it might not have an auto-renewal and therefore you can't cancel an option that doesn't exist. I wouldn't worry too much about it now. You do have a year to let it sit and remind yourself again.

Thanks for the reply. I finally got a message back from their account department. For some reason they won't let me cancel my account online. I have to snail mail my personal and credit card info some person at their main office and wait for them to "hopefully" cancel my account.

If I knew I would have to jump through hoops just to cancel a membership- I never would have signed up.

Wow. Glad I found this thread. I guess I'll cancel my membership, as I can't seem to find any solid information on /any/ advocacy done by The ECA. I wouldn't mind paying a yearly fee if they were actually effective advocates.
can I cancel my subscription and receive a prorated amount of $ back?
No they offer no refunds.

The option to cancel your membership seems to be gone from my account. Anyone else having this issue? I no longer want the membership since the amazon codes are gone and don't want to have to worry about the automatic renewal charging my credit card 10 months from now.

Mine was canceled months ago, so I can't check.

If it's true, then it's a sure sign of mass exodus.

Interesting, I can't seem to find the option either.
Their is no Recurring fee or operation tab under view, I see no where to cancel
Exactly! The option to cancel your membership is gone.
Maybe they've gone to a free membership system?
Lol, might as well now that they have nothing to offer.

With all the fiasco over this issue aren't people avoiding putting all the Blame on those that "Abused" the discount. This entire problem resulted from a few who could not use personal restraint and use the opportunnity properly they were given.

Instead "they CHOOSE" to scam the Company, and RUIN it for everyone else, they were selfish, childish, immature and "solely Responsible" not ECA or Amazon,

had people got a code when they were about to make a purchase at amazon, every now and then they would have had plenty. Even the idea of stock piling them is not what the benefit was meant to be, and had people got a code on the day they shopped for the order at that day/time stacking would not have likely happened either.

It's a little bit of a shame how people can't police there own actions. Just hope if some of these same people drive or own a gun don't just decide to drive on a sidewalk or shoot someone they thing deserves it cause they want to .

At least they will take the blame for it and not try to justfy their actions and place the blame on everything else they can come up with. Oh wait... nevermind.

It seems the only way to cancel is to send a written request to:

Are you fraking kidding me? I was maybe going to keep my membership, but I'm not if they don't make it easy to cancel! What the frak!?! So basically I'm fraked because I didn't cancel when I had the chance, and actually wanted to support them?!?

This has to be a mistake, right? Like they're not going to charge or something? I see when my membership ends, but nothing about recharging or something...

Actually, I just remembered...my credit card expired last month, so the joke's on them if they try to bill me without my permission

I do want to support them though actually, IF they're not getting weird and locking you in or something.

I'm glad I canceled my student membership a couple of weeks ago when I did. This entire saga is just baffling. I feel bad for the people that paid and want out.

Whoever is running the ECA is doing an insanely bad job. If anything, you want to keep your paying members happy...not drive them away.

What a bunch of assholes, they took out the option to cancel your membership. I just sent them a message and what they sent me back was the address to send a written request to cancel. Can they do that? Is that even legal?

That's seriously messed up. I'm having a hard time believing it. I should be safe though since my credit card number's changed, right?

They're not going to try to come after me or something insane I presume...though at this point...
I can see why people are upset but it's just a letter. It won't kill you.
It's absolutely ridiculous and a clear tactic to try and make as much money as possible off people no longer desiring their service. There is no reason why you should have to write a letter, I mean come on they had a perfectly working internet system before.

Also, I really wouldn't be shocked if we saw the discounts back after the holidays, Amazon's margins are probably much thinner with their holiday sales, so they probably can't be profitable with everyone and their brother getting 10 percent off for free on top of that.

These guys are hilarious. Making it so you have to write a letter to cancel your membership is outrageous. Whats next? "Whoops, your letter must have got lost in the mail...."

Didn't their CEO/vice idiot say they would terminate your membership if you trolled their forums? That sounds like a much more fun way than writing a letter!

Agreed. The online cancellation option was working perfectly fine until they realized most of their members would cancel. I don't feel like wasting a $0.44 cent stamp on this bullshit. Real classy move ECA.

I'll have to keep subscribed to this through April, to see what happens when they can't rebill me :whistle2:/

This ain't making them look good. The Amazon thing, fine, that's out of their control, but like Josef said, they actually had this working. Even before they did, they didn't make you WRITE A LETTER to cancel. I've NEVER heard of something like that before.

I mean two people email or call them about it, and get that response?

A letter? Seriously? No telephone or email?

My membership "expires" in June. So if there's nothing come may, I'll start the cancellation process.

Saves 44 cents.

I'm glad I already canceled.

I defended ECA numerous times but they're completely lost it. They're being real petty about this...

All of this makes me that much more glad that I used my credit card company's "virtual account number" option to make a "card" that was limited to the cost of a one year membership and that expired well before my membership would be up for renewal. I already canceled automatic renewal back when the option was still available on the site to do so, but given everything else, I don't exactly trust them not to try anyway. But, hey, let them try, they won't be able to do it.

The moral to this story is that the "virtual account number" (whatever your credit card company calls it; many offer the service, and it's usually free) is a really good idea when giving your credit card info to someone you don't know, especially when there's the possibility of automatic re-billing involved.

Yeah. In my case I use Discover...and actually I can't figure out exactly what their "Secure Online Account Numbers" do. They seem to tie themselves to a single merchant, but don't expire until the card does, but can be cancelled seperately if need be.

Except some merchants don't seem to take them, or possibly they've started becoming single use...sometimes. I don't know it's confusing, but a great idea if you can figure it out with your credit card company.

I wrote a quick email yesterday asking about the cancel button and got this auto-response. I'll post the human-response, if I get one.

Hello John

Thank you for your interest in the ECA. Your message will be routed to the most appropriate staff member so that it can be handled as efficiently as possible. In the interim, if you have a question about the association generally, try this FAQ. Membership dues are processed automatically on your anniversary date from joining the association. The credit card that we have on file will be used to complete the transaction unless you terminate your membership. Approximately one month prior to the end of your paid year, the system will email you a reminder that your dues are coming due and how the process works. To remain a member in good standing you must have a valid credit card capable of paying your dues on file with the association. If that does not answer your question adequately or you have additional related questions, please contact: [email protected] to communicate directly with our Accounting staff. Thank you.

Maybe the accounting staff can serve as a surrogate instead of snail mail?

Another thing I don't like is the fact that we can't remove our CC info after termination, even when you could still do it online. The CC I used expires at the end of the year, but it's still a really horrible system. Last thing I need is these idiots having their information stolen by thieves and end up battling ID theft.

You think we're going to be okay when they charge us again since our info will be different, right? Ugh...I don't completely trust even that. (We're turning you over to a collection agency for not paying your membership dues!)

Subscription services can reach out to your credit card company to obtain updated information and/or card numbers. Now this may only be true for larger companies but I am not sure.

If you are really worried, just tell your carrier the card was lost and they will send you a new card number.
