EGM september - Lair (and everything else) panned, Persona 3 gotm
Just think of Lair as a Michael Bay movie.

All flash, no substance.
*waits for Transformers thread locals to egg your car*
The Mario Strikers scores are legit, as they were mentioned on EGM Live this week as being 7.5's across the board.
As I mentioned, someone from EGM has already confirmed all the scores.

I skipped over your post since there was no link showing that.

No link, I talked to him myself.

EGM carries absolutely zero credibility with me. Their "games" coverage consistes of a giant, poor resolution screenshot taking up 80% of the page, followed with a 4 sentence blub about the game. Honestly, EGM reads like an expanded version of the video game reviews in Maxim.
And I got my EGM in the mail today...so yeah. I can type the LAIR review if anyone cares.
Damnit, mine always takes forever to get to me.

NEED. HALO3. ARTICLE.

Which cover did you get?

Cover 3 of 3: The Elite

If I still had my scanner I'd scan the Halo 3 article for you...but I don't :p

and it scores a 6.5, 7.5, and 6.5. A bit disappointing, considering the backing behind this project. Granted, it would be wise to wait for other reviews to come in before this game can truly be deemed "above average", but this review would probably give a good indication to the overall quality of the game. The knocks on the game were the lame characters and lackluster story. On the flipside, they gave major props to the battle system and graphics.

I didn't see any topics on this before, so I figured this is worth posting.

Did you expect anything else from EGM. If its not Final Fantasy, Halo, MGS. They don't give it a good score. Lemme guess "Shame" Bentenhousen and his lackey Bryan Intyhar and an intern reviewing it?
for some odd reason, It was in the back of my mind that lair wasn't going to hold up being that great.

and dynasty warrior gundam, I could really care less about it's reviews, I'm going to buy it anyway, because it's freaking gundam!
Amen! Gundam rules! :) I guess I'll just get Heavenly Sword and pass on Lair until it hits the cheapo bin. :)

Others in this thread are correct, sometimes I think the EGM people are throwing darts at a board to figure out which games to nitpick and which to laud... I've read in some of their more detailed reviews things I'd call a show-stopping bug, but they gloss it over and give the game an 8... or at the worst a 7... Other games they say "the color of the hero's coat is all wrong!" And they give it a 5.5.

It's not exactly scientific, and quite possibly it was a disgruntled employee (heheh), but it certainly seems their criteria for defining a "good" as opposed to "bad" game is more happenstance than any formula... In most instances the mechanics get less verbiage than say the cutscenes or aesthetics. Some sports games don't even get a mention as to how the AI plays (not everyone plays online with 80 friends all the time....) So, you end up with open-ended, or at the worst, ineffective reviews.

Ah well... It's all subjective anyway. (I would like to know if a game's unplayable, or has game-killing bugs... but most of the time we don't see that in a review...)

I played Lair at Comicon
I went in having absolutely no interest in the game, but it drew such long lines, i was like hell i'll give it a shot. I would say its probably not going to be a system seller, but for people who already have PS3's, I suggest you give the demo a shot before passing judgement.

Controls were fantastic. I was never a Sixaxis fan, but I will admit it makes flying in this game very intuitive. Graphics were not as jaw-dropping like Gears, but certainly did not detract from the experience, and were probably the best of all the games there. (Folklore, R&C Tools of Destruction, Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, Eye of Judgement).

Pretty excited about the game now, EGM's review is pretty disappointing, but I'm going to wait till the Metacritic average before deciding whether or not I should buy it full price.

Where'd you get that? Looks more like from the original document than a scan. Very sharp.

I'm guessing from a digital copy of EGM. They usually are deliverd before the paperbacks hit newstands or mailboxes.

Yup.

BTW, that Halo 3 article is damn long.

yeah I just noticed his join date....while I don't spend as much time on here as I used to and post even less so I can't believe I didn't have that name filed away in my brain as being an ass
This is against the rules.

I got my issue in the mail yesterday, and there is some additional stuff in the review besides just that. They actually have a small Q&A section with one of Factor 5 guys asking about the issues they had with the game which was kind of interesting.

The most interesting part of the whole issue was the list of upcoming "weird" games. Napolean Dynamite and Aqua Teen Hunger Force games? Sweet.

As far as I can tell, it's a recent phenomenon, as I didn't have him pegged in the "Vanilla Gorilla" category either.

For Lair, the guys at EGM think that people who buy the game have to "justify" their PS3 purchase. I think they said that with F.E.A.R. too, but I'm not sure. That line is getting real old.

Oh, for sure.

Makes them feel like they are cool.

If I wasn't getting EGM for free I wouldn't even read it. Their reviews are the worst out of all the magazines since they are so short and vague.

I enjoy egm's reviews. Great for print, short and tells what you need to know. Do you ever read IGN and GameSpot's 4 page atrocities? I read a paragraph or two on each page and skim the rest. It's always harder to write something short and effective than blather on.

A review doesn't need to be huge. Web reviews can be a bit longer, though.

No, the problem is they DONT tell you what you need to know. Sometimes a persons review says something like "this game is like going in a private jet but sitting in the bathroom the whole time" and granted they never said anything exactly like that (yet) they have said things very very similar.

Gameinformer has perfect sized reviews. Bigger games take up a page while the smaller games take up half or less.

gotta agree about IGN and GS' reviews. unless it's something I really like, I don't care for their huge descriptions.

It's harder to write a succinct review and I feel like IGN and GS are too afraid to make cuts (just as I am when I write my own reviews)

Yeah, but not all of their reviews are that long. I've read a bunch of reviews that were only a page or two. It's usually only the bigger games that get the really long reviews from what I've noticed.

Most of those games didn't really excite me anyway, so oh well. I'll rent Lair, but I'm still keeping my Blue Dragon. I think they're just hot for BioShock and Halo3, so other games are suffering.

Damn, I'm still waiting for something to blow me away on my PS3 (besides 300 and some other BRD movies).

But you know, I have to admit I actually LOVED Drakan on the PS2. I think a few people on here bashed it, and you can obviously and totally see the similarities in the games, but I thought it was damn good and fun all the way around.

Of course, it was pretty early in the PS2's life and I do remember having virtually nothing good to play that first year or so, but that game was very entertaining.

If it's anything like that, I'll definitely give it a shot. But probably when it drops to $30 or less.
