EGM Virtua Fighter 5 review, they love it
That's what happens when you cater to a niche group of fans. That works very rarely. SNK was able to cater to a niche group because in their heyday 2D fighers were still the driving force behind arcade attendance. Atlus did it with their RPGS/Strategy games because they were a small company to start with. Sega was/is a large company and it just makes no sense not to try to appeal to a larger fanbase by possibly increasing the number of people willing to play your game. Letting 2KSports go has just lead to a domino effect for all their other properties. With the possible exception of Yakuza (unless I am overlooking something else) they really haven't had anything that may pull in the casual gamer in a long time. The key is to cater to the casual and the hardcore (so you won't go out of business) and they are missing that boat with VF5. I would not be surprised to see Sega fade into oblivion in a few years.
I don't know what Sega is doing.. but if they aren't more aggressive with their products, then you're right they will fade into Oblivion.

Sammy is a huge company that makes a lot of money elsewhere. Sega as we know it today might change into something cheaper, but the Sega we knew is already gone. They just don't seem to have the talent anymore to make AAA titles. Even the Sega from the days of the original Xbox is gone. Smilebit/AM6 (PD Orta, JSRF) is gone, Hitmaker/AM3 (Crazy Taxi) is gone, everyone from Sonic Team went to either Artoon or Prope. Yu Suzuki is still there, but they only let him do bullshit like Psiphi and Shenmue Online (developed by and for the Chinese/Korean market). God knows how he blew through 70 million making Shenmue, but that got him on the slow boat to his office in Taiwan.

They just don't have the talent they used to. They're just a brand now, like Origin and Westwood, only they piss through more money than a Saudi Prince.

but anyway, Virtua Fighter is still amazing...and after all, isn't that what this thread is about??
Should Gears of War get a less score because it's one player campaign is on the short end... heck no... because the things that is does, it does well.
Just like any other game, 4-6 hours is a negative, but I dont think that a game should lose points just because its short.. or missing one feature.
It's a negative, but it shouldn't lose points? Aren't points just a metric system for rating positives and negatives? GoW did lose points for the short campaign in a lot of reviews. Are you saying if they released GoW 2008 with no updates to the multiplayer modes and the exact same game, it would still be a great game?

Some positives aren't as positive as other positives, and some negatives are as negative as other negatives..

I can't help for the opinions of other game reviewers that took off points from Gears, but if it's me reviewing the game, I'm not going to take off points for it being somewhat short, because that's negative, but I wouldn't expect for gears to be dropped from a 10, or 9.5 to a 8 or 8.5 because of it.

GOW 2008 ["same game"] would still be a great game... (technically), but it would let people down, because it didn't address the wants of the consumers, but in the case, that would just keep the game in the same score range as the previous game. Virtual Figher 4, got good reviews, this game got good reviews as well.. however, it'll never be a 10 until they address the needs of the consumer - meaning online connectivity, better story(imo). I'll be the first to admit Sega should have done more with this game... in terms of story, and online to get more people involved, but wihtout the online community, he game is going to lose sells and potential customers, because who really wants to play this game alone... right now fighting game market is weak... this game online and on multiple systems could have made this game reach GOWar status.

I've been wanting to get an arcade stick for the longest time and have finally decided to grab a MAS systems stick (PS2/DC compatible).

Has anyone tried using the ps2->ps3 controller adapter with one of these? I really, really dont want to play VF5 with a standard controller.
its simply a rental! you be done with the game within few days unless you are a huge vf fan.
No

Damn...I want to get this but I don't know if I'll be able to afford it. I mean, it would be VF5, flOw, and Tekken DR this month, then Motorstorm, Oblivion, and Armored Core next month...thats kinda expensive

I think if they let you upload and download ghost fighters of your best characters that would satisfy most people who want an oline component.

I think VF4 for PS2 did this with memory cards you could take to a friends house donload to thier system and even practice againts this character.

Then the leaderboard would mean something. Because you actuatlly beat a fighter that someone else programed.
Hype hype hype. ffs, there's not even any online modes on it. There's no way a non-online next-gen fighting game is worth a 10.
Virtua Fighter = 10

Now I agree that it doesn't deserve an 11 or 12, because it lacks Online.

I agree. There's a lot they could've done to bring the game into next-gen. Unfortunately, the only thing they did was make the graphics better. AI characters are gone, Quest mode is cool but the same, and rankings are absolutely pitiful.

As I said in my review for Yahoo (which I submitted a few days ago off the U.S. retail version), I'd really like to see a way for the game to judge your playing abilities, assess a score or rank, and then upload THAT to a leaderboard. Kind of like TrueSkill's idea.

I find that if you get very far in quest mode, that's a good judge of your abilities, as it gets pretty freaking hard once you get deep into it.
