Essential gaming experiences of this generaton

What do you consider to be the essential gaming experiences of this generation of consoles? What small handful of games or moments will you remember forever, like the things you remember from the NES or SNES or PS1 eras? The things you would strongly encourage others to at least taste?

1. Mass Effect 1 and 2
2. Alan Wake
3. Fable 2 (not any one part, just the fun I had doing every little thing)
4. a "highlight reel" featuring Assassin's Creed 2, Batman Arkham, Lost Odyssey, Gears 1 and 2, Halo 3 (ending), Red Dead Redemption, and a few more.

I'm mainly a 360 guy these days, so my recent memories are all on that system. But, I will say that I've had a higher volume of amazing experiences on the 360 than any system ever (and I've been gaming since the pre-Atari 2600 days).

Mass Effect 1 & 2
Gears of War 1 & 2 (in co-op especially)
Bioshock (and the sequel to a lesser extent)
Call of Duty 4 (and MW2 to a lesser extent)
Oblivion and Fallout 3
Assassin's Creed 2.
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Prince of Persia (the cel shaded one)
Rockband 1 and 2
Halo 3

I'm a 360 only guy, those are the games that have stuck out the most to me. Has been a VERY good generation. Most fun I've had gaming since the SNES days.

Not sure off hand due to just waking up, but first to come to mind for the wii would be Super Mario Galaxy 1&2.

Exploring the world of oblivion was very memorable for me. There's never been such an immersive world before it. Sure there was Morrowind but that world felt static, Oblivion was huge and still intimate; individual objects had physics, everyone had special dialogue (even if there were only about 6 different voice actors), people had their own daily actions, etc.

Most memorable this gen for me would probably be Final Fantasy XIII -- but a game that everyone should play? That's hard to say.

Oh I know -- Uncharted 2. Probably the definition of this gen in terms of action/adventure.

:wii: Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition - The refinement of the precursor to every modern over the shoulder 3rd person FPS.

:wii: Trauma Center Series - Essential because it is basically its very own genre, one that could only come about through motion control and pointing.

:360: Dead Rising - Even though I dont like the game, it is essential because having the number of on screen enemies that it does is a legitimate game feature that could not have been done before this generation.

Uncharted 2 and Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are really the only games this gen that's made me say wow. A close runner up is God of War 3 just for story and scale sake.

Rock Band simply because it gave me a new way to look at music plus it helped introduce me to a new community of gamers. Other then that Uncharted 2 simply because it felt like something that couldn't be done in the past gens at all. Fallout 3, just simply because scope of the game was beyond others I played and even with the repetitive level designs it made me enjoy journeying through the Wasteland.
