I haven't seen it yet, but I'm jumping on at that price.
I was going to wait until they were all out to start buying..
Yeah. I was going to do the same, but this is too good of a deal to pass up.
I was going to wait until they were all out to start buying. But seeing as that'll take years, and this really is quite a good deal....I'll bite.

My life is worth living here.
glad i'm not alone feeling this way!

Will it take years? I thought it was only going to be 4 discs total? I swear I read that somewhere...

It is only going to be 4 discs, but considers 1 came out in Japan in 2007, 2 just came out last year, and there are no definite release dates for 3 and 4... years.

There are going to be four films, but 1.0 came out in Japan in September 2007, and 2.0 came out in 2009. If that pace keeps up we'll have quite a while to wait.
To compound that, 1.0 wasn't even released in America until 2009. If THAT pace keeps up it'll DOUBLE the wait for Americans.

In the booklet that comes with 1.11, it says 3 and 4 will be released together. So the wait might not be as long as you think.

Got my copy today (Prime 2-day shipping), it's really nice. A cardboard sleeve with a folding book-style cardboard case inside, with a booklet that details the technical aspects of the production. Very nice art and color.

I hate the over-saturation of Evangelion in the anime industry but a BR at this price is just so damn good. Sold.

Edit: Anyone else noticed that it will take 9-11 days to ship the order?

It has basically said that since the deal was posted, and it only took two additional days for mine to ship - and even then, it arrived faster than the item I bought with it that shipped a day prior.

My copy and FMA Brotherhood Part 1 (Is currently $30 on BR compared to the DVD that's like 36 on Amazon) shipped yesterday. I should be getting it by this weekend... it's coming from Delaware (I'm in MD) and every time I get a shipment from DE via Amazon it still takes a while. I never knew why though.

Got mine yesterday and it is indeed some lovely packaging (though I'd prefer a real Blu-Ray case). Watched part of the movie and it looks sweet in HD, even though you can see the TV origins in the actual character art. The backgrounds, colors, and stuff are all beautiful.

What do you mean by "you can see the TV origins in the actual character art?"

I agree on the case though. I hate having a nice row of BDs and then one odd ball that laughs at my OCD. I found an awesome custom BD box insert online but they wanted me to pay $20 for it. (Lol)

The character designs and drawings are often kind of simple, as with most TV series art. Especially when it's just someone talking. Not horribly simple, but not theatrical. Which is no surprise or major criticism, since it is adapted and touched up from a TV series.

I got mine today and I actually like the packaging. It keeps in line with Japanese 1.11 release, although I like the Japanese design a bit more, not sure why though. Just finished watching it and it does indeed look fantastic.
WTH? I bought it in June 1st and I applied for Prime just to get free shipping and amazon says its still not shipped. :whistle2:(
It's out of stock and will take 9-11 days to shop, as has been stated in this thread already. Once it ships, you should get it in 2 business days.

Since some are getting it earlier (you included) I thought the day estimates was just a typo on amazon's part. Ah well. :whistle2:|

Man, weird happy nostalgic feeling watching Evangelion again. Though after every Angel fight all I can think is the song "Raining Blood" from Slayer.

someone please ease my mind:

was yours wrapped with heat-wrapped plastic or the factory seal with the folds at the corners?

mine was the former
Damn. Great price, but I know they're going to make some kind of awesome boxset when the movies are finished...
Sure, but that's probably 2-3 years off. A long wait...

I got my copy on Friday. It claimed it would take 9-11 days, but I got it about maybe 4-5. Not too shabby. I might watch it tomorrow. FMA Brotherhood on the other hand, looks great.

I received Super Street FIghter IV (PS3) from amazon brand new wrapped in the same way. It was also on sale, maybe amazon gets these items and seal themselves at sale price, just my speculation.

Also I'm thinking about buying this BR. Is this worth the blind buy?

If it is literally a blind buy and you know absolutely nothing about the series, it is entirely worth it.

Heresy. Watching this before watching the series would be like watching Star Wars Episodes 1-3 before starting on 4-6.
Heresy. Watching this before watching the series would be like watching Star Wars Episodes 1-3 before starting on 4-6.
Except this is a retread of, what, the first four episodes but with extra animation and slightly less development?

While I sort of understand what you mean, you might want to find a different comparison. This really is, essentially, the first six episodes of Evangelion compressed and with some slight changes.
Now to be entirely fair, some of these changes are fucking huge depending on how into-the-series you are. But if you are a newcomer, I don't think it will be as big a deal.

There are some slight, and not so slight changes in the first movie from the series. The second, however, diverges greatly and it's value is diminished if you haven't seen the series. I can't in good faith recommend that someone start a movie quartet that they won't be able to fully appreciate.

I'm not saying that you can't enjoy this if you haven't seen the series. I'm just saying by watching them out of order you're going to enjoy the franchise less as a whole.

That seems like something of a moot point, though. It'll probably be a year easy before we see 2.22 in the states.
Assuming you are going to watch Evangelion through legitimate means, a $14 Blu ray is a great start. If you buy it and enjoy it, it is a good way to get into the original series.

thanks for answering my question! i can't say for sure if that's it, but they haven't lead me astray before, so without further evidence, i'd say there's nothing shady.

i watched EVA but was never a hardcore fan, but i'd say just as far as PQ and AQ, it's worth it. in terms of what you should see first, i'm not so sure - they have to condense so much, i'm not sure if the rebuild is the optimal eva in terms of first time views or in terms of rewatching.

if that makes any sense.

Well, watching the movie is much less of a commitment in terms of time and money. You get it cheap and it doesn't take forever to watch. If you like it, you can invest in the series box set.

Buying a series without having seen it can backfire. I did that with Boogiepop Phantom and Final Fantasy Unlimited and didn't end up liking either show.

Hey guys, thanks for all the responses to my little question :applause: I ultimately decided to get it. I've heard pretty much great things about Evangelion and how it had a huge impact on the anime industry. So with bold statements such as those, I'm sure this will be a great watch.

Post your impressions if you can. I think 1.11 is much improved for first time Eva viewers compared to 1.01.

It's true, there's absolutely no way anybody should watch the second new Eva film without having seen the TV series first. Even the final scene of the first movie will be entirely lost on those who have no familiarity with the original.

ok i've not been following the Evangelion series since ... well the original series. so now i thought this 1.11 was the latest in blu-ray for Evangelion, but now there's an even earlier version 1.01? what else am i missing on BR for this series? and is it worth getting 1.01?

1.01 is the dvd release. 1.11 is the bluray release.

This is a retelling of the series in four movies. The first movie (1.01 or 1.11) is basically a recap of the first six episodes of the original tv series, though it starts to diverge at the ending. Future movies promise to stray quite a bit further, with the introduction of a new pilot.

thx! that explains it but why on earth differentiate the formats with version numbers?

1.11 Is also on DVD actually. Though 1.11 includes I believe about three minutes of scenes not in 1.01 that and it improves the color of some of the darker scenes in 1.01 as well.

The OP has a picture of the packaging (the slipcase, technically) and this post shows an unboxing. Noppe, it's not a standard Blu-Ray case (slightly to my chagrin).

It will be back in stock on the 11th for those of us who still had orders waiting to be fulfilled.
