Walmart.com has Fallout 76 Tricentennial Edition for $19.99 (org. 79.99) on both XBox and PS4.  Regular edition is $17.  This is NOT the in-store price!  To get the price you'll probably either have to pick it up online in a couple days, or PM elsewhere.

Supposedly the game has gotten much better since launch and at E3 they announced they have a big update on the way to vastly improve the single player experience too.

Be warned, I went to Best Buy to price match and it was a huge ordeal.  At least at my store, their POS system wouldn't let them take it that low because it's still $80 there.  The assistant manager was there so he tried, couldn't it get to work.  He called corporate, they couldn't do it so they escalated it to the senior advisors and they couldn't do it either.  The lowest it would let them take it was I think $30.50 or something.

Anyway, what he ended up doing for me since it was a legit PM was taking it as low as the system would let him, and then he issued me a free gift card for the difference and applied it before I paid...so I ended up paying $19.99+tax.

I may bite on this. I have a 10% coupon about to expire at WM anyway (long story re: previous order and refund issue). Curious if in fact the game has gotten "better" or wait till Black Friday sale (or next winter sale potential). 

 
Impressions, coming from someone who has played about 120 hours or so. 80 last year, 40 this year.

The cons:

  • The main quest has some exciting, interesting moments, but an excessive amount of filler.
  • Way too many of the game's quests are framed around discovering information about something that's already happened.
  • Camp build budgets are disappointingly small.
  • Storage weight limits can be cramping to playstyle.
  • The game is still somewhat buggy. Most quests work well, but there's a lot of visual issues and crashes every 5-10 hours of play.
  • A lot of assets are reused from FO4.
The pros:

  • There are damn good reasons to replay the game through several times if you like building characters. You can't make a "jack of all trades" type in FO76.
  • The new perk card system is pretty well done.
  • There are a lot of subtle QoL improvements over Fallout 4.
  • Equipment comes in leveled variants which provides a steady sense of progression.
  • The survival stuff isn't overbearing, and can actually be atmospheric.
  • Appalachia is varied and for the most part the regions are interesting to explore.
  • The multiplayer elements are decently executed. Taking photos with friends is fun and there's good incentives for group play.
  • Power armor is really fun.
  • The battle royale mode is surprisingly good?
  • Wastelanders is gonna be amazing, but doesn't come till Fall.
For $20 it's worth it if you enjoy the core loop of scavenging and combat from FO4 with some of its exploration. I think whether or not you will enjoy it has a lot to do with how you felt about FO4 after finishing its main story. Did you want to see more of the world, keep building your settlement, or character? Then this is a good fit for you.

They announced at E3 the next big update will add NPC's and focus on single player... I'm half considering not even playing it until then.

 
I played since B.E.T.A. and honestly for me it was worth it then, and with all the new stuff in the last few months, 19.99 and under is an absolute no brainer.

 
Is it just digital stuff? I already have FO76, so it probably doesn't make sense to spend $20 just for this stuff.

Wouldnt it have been much faster to just put in the system that you paid the $30.50 in cash, but not actually charge you. Then with that receipt do another price match for the $19.99 price and then charge you that price + tax.

I got the $17 version with the loot box solely for Nuclear Winter. I had the trial and the battle royale was so fun that I had to get it. The best Fortnite skins cost $15 to $20 so this felt like a no brainer. I’ll play the main game when the human NPCs arrive in the fall.

To me fo4 was the worst one. I found the entire game to be bland and boring. It was like they just took the basic idea of what fallout is, threw in a bunch of building stuff, and tried to make it appealing to all. Couldnt walk 3 minutes without finding something or being pushed to a quest, it had no sense of exploration as you were constantly tripping over yet another bandit camp or mutant squad.

It had no teeth either, no slavery, nothing youd expect in a post apocalyptic world, no sense of a unhinged society, or sense of dread. Just mutants, robots, and occasional cartoon like bad guy. I know its rated M, but damn I want it to be rated M for more than just cursing, blowing up mutants and very very softly suggested adult themes.

I found myself running through it just to get it finished.

Oh, you are in for a treat then. Fallout 4 is AAA in comparison to Fallout76!!

 
76 is actually better than 4 in most regards. Lack of NPCs and story are weak points, graphics aren’t quite as crisp, but the environment and enemy variety are far superior to 4. It’s just a more interesting game imo ... and the card system is better than 4’s system where you didn’t really have to make any real choices on character progression if you play long enough.

That's what I'm betting on. I have GPU until June 2022 so I'm sure it will be there in 3 years. Although for $19.99, it's still a good deal. I just have too many other games on my backlog to get into another Fallout game right now.

 
Bestbuy chat pricematch was easy and hassle-free.  I probably won't bother too much with it until Wastelanders drops but seemed worth the twenty bucks to check it out.

Don't bother in-store because they're correct, the system will not override over ~60% off. Last time this happened, they gave me a ton of shit over it and I turned right around and had online chat do it from my car. Walked in to pick it up half an hour later and pretty sure the manager saw I had gotten it anyway. Win.

Yes it does but it comes in form of reading n play audio types. No people or cut scenes telling you what to do.

I would recommend picking this up if u have a friend to play with n u love exploring the world. I'm having so much fun exploring with my wife n looting things in the game. The connection is really good n haven't had any problems with that.

I would go with the collectible box that comes with the game for 17 dollars. It looks like a lunch box. The other edition is just a bunch of digital junk like the armor to wear or frame for ur camp. Their like cosmetics.

While you can technically play it single player just like almost any other MMO...like others have said they really tried to push the MP aspect of it.  For me I generally even play MMO's mostly SP and so far that's how I've played this and I've enjoyed it.  Never seeing NPC's is rather jarring, for sure.  HOWEVER, like I've said, they announced at E3 that later this year they're releasing an update that adds NPC's.

So far I'm enjoying it, I wish I could mix this with FO4 because I too never finished FO4.  The graphics in this game are much better IMO (lighting especially) but it's just so weird not seeing NPC's haha.  If it becomes too weird for me I'll eventually end up just waiting for the new update.

Do keep in mind though, that the "Tricentennial" content alone is $19 normally priced.

 
Honestly, I don't get the rage over no human NPCs because the bots are perfect. Almost breaks the fourth wall being self-aware of the robotic animations human NPCs have always had anyways. I just wish they would overhaul combat to the point where stats mattered beyond being able to have enough defense to take a hit.

Might pick this up.
Surprisingly enjoyed the free trial and future updates are looking good.

Probably will look up the Tricentennial edition content up and see if there's actually anything good in there.
