CD Projekt Red will give away a "legendary" PC RPG for free on GOG.com this Thursday, 5th April, Eurogamer can reveal.

The giveaway coincides with CD Projekt's Spring Conference, which is being streamed live at 5pm GMT (presumably 6pm BST).

Note that giveaway has nothing to do with the "extraordinary" conference announcement CD Projekt has been teasing.

CD Projekt Red head of marketing Michal Platkow-Gilewski explained to Eurogamer: "No, there will be no announcement of a new game.

"But to give you some hints and not to spoil the surprise, CD Projekt RED and GOG.com have prepared something very special for all the PC fans of The Witcher 2 Assassins of Kings, who already have the game, as well as for all those who will buy one any time in the future.

"It is something really unique," he added.

"More to come on the conference."

Although the deal is not live yet, wanted to post as a heads up in case you don't check the site daily ;)
Don't really care either way, but I tried GOG.com back in Sept because of this:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=304721

Now Broken Sword isn't in my library anymore mysteriously, it was in there before (like fallout is now) but now it's just "gone".

I don't trust this site for free games, let alone paying for a game that can be taken from library at will.
They don't take games away. Like someone else said maybe you have the game set to hidden. Either that or it's a glitch, in which case you can contact them about it and they'll fix it for you.

Not once has any of my games vanished from my library, including every single "free for a limited-time" game I've gotten (Tex Murphy 2-pack, Jagged Alliance: Deadly Games, Gothic 2, Empire Earth, Fallout and Temple of Elemental Evil). And I've been a member of GOG for over 2 and 1/2 years.

If you need tips for original Fallout, I've got a couple from vague recollection.

CHA/2 is the amount of companions you can have. 4 = 2 companions. 6 = 3. Ergo, you probably want to just leave it at 4, but you can do completely without it if necessary.

PER = shooty stat. Good to have

STR gains 3 in power armor and can be upped another 1 or so with loot scattered around. Since it's your carry weight, I almost always recommend 5 or 6.

INT = skill points. VERY good to have.

AGI = AP, cannot neglect this.

Everything else, meh.

Small guns have tended to be the most reliable bet for me in FO1. First Aid and Doctor kinda overlap but Doctor heals a bit more and heals wounded limbs.

I don't know if this trait is in FO1, but Gifted, which gives loads more stat points at the cost of skills has always done me right. It makes the early game a lot slower but it pays off in my opinion.

It's 100% possible for games to disappear permanently as a glitch, but it might only apply to Broken Sword. You have to contact their support to get the game restored. Broken Sword disappeared from my library a few months back, but about a day after contacting their support team I had it restored.

Kazaganthi definitely isn't alone in this issue, but like I said it's only happened to me with Broken Sword, so the glitch may be specific to that game. Their support is great, so it isn't really anything to be worried about if you do end up losing games from your library but it does suck when it happens to you.

Every time they give out free games it seems like I already have it. Wish they would give out coupons for any game instead!

So in this game do they box it in so it works on wide screen monitors (I know the site usually patches them up to work on current systems), or do you have to run it in windowed mode/adjust your monitor? One of the main things I can't stand in a lot of older games is running them distorted or having to jump through hoops to run in WS.

I'm actually playing FO1 from GOG right now... stupid giveaway.:D

The native resolutions are 4:3. I haven't looked for any patch; I just run it in full-screen mode and it takes up a 4:3 window in the middle of my monitor, with black bars on the side.

If your monitor is distorting when you run full-screen, that is a driver configuration that you can control; not necessarily the game's fault. Some games have a setting in "options" for this (the game Sacred comes to mind), but most behave as you've set the drivers.

It's a bit of work to figure out, I admit, because AMD and nVidia move this setting around in their control panel, depending on if you're using HDMI or VGA connector, and the driver version. But it can be done. Install the latest driver for your monitor, the latest for your video card, and you can adjust this, I promise.

With regard to Fallout, however, you have the option to run in windowed mode or full-screen.

It won't run in widescreen as is but you can download a patch that will let you. I think there's a stickied thread in the GOG forum for the game that has a link.

I grabbed it, though I don't have a PC to play it on at the moment other than in a VM. Probably not going to work well, but then again this is an older game so maybe it will be tolerable. Thanks for the heads up, OP!

That game is so old it will work on your phone lol

Do you have a Mac or use Linux? The game supposedly works great under Wine. It has a platinum rating so there shouldn't be any problems.

Wine for OS X

Yes, a Mac. I will definitely give it a shot under Wine. Actually I have that commercial Wine-based product, the name is escaping me at the moment, that supposedly works well with games. So probably I should try it with that.

That would be CrossOver... http://www.codeweavers.com/

I've played FO2, FO3, and New Vegas. Been wanting to play the original, now I have no excuse not to. Thanks for the heads up, OP!
Free Fallout and a Backup Copy of Witcher II. This is pretty awesome.

Although still trying to figure out why I need a backup copy of Witcher II  (I own the disc version). Not complaining but just wondering, but hey it's always good.
If you lose the disc you don't have to buy it again. Or you can give your disc to someone else and still have a copy of the game.

It's a backup copy of the game, not an additional copy, unless they've said otherwise. I watched the stream when it was announced and I don't recall them doing anything like that. Giving away or selling your disc and using the GOG version for yourself is no different than selling copies of DVDs, your music collection, or the games you download from GOG.

these are the same thing.
these are the same thing.
No, they are not. If you make a copy of a DVD you can't just give it to a friend legally. That's piracy.

You're getting a backup of your game, not a second license to give away.

It's possible that they'll let you. The site isn't up and running with the fine print yet. But based on their wording so far that's not what this is.

Ok so I didn't imagine it. Support got back to me with a link to "refresh" that didn't work, still no Broken Sword. We'll see if they continue support.

That's odd, they fixed it for me without providing a refresh link or anything of the sort. I don't know if it helped, but I sent in a screenshot of the email invoice that was sent to me when I got Broken Sword for free when I contacted them.

If you just put in the CD key to get the back-up, then it is possible one person can just give out their cd key for someone else to redeem it on GOG. You're not supposed to do it officially, but I can't see them actively enforcing this considering their lax attitudes on DRM and piracy.

The demo was what sold it to me originally (last century, terrifyingly enough)... I equipped the SMG. Then I shot someone. Then I fell in love.

The demo wasn't too far in, if memory serves. Give it another shot! :D

This'll be my first old school RPG. I prefer more straight up action RPGs. Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all-time, and that's why I'll be playing through Fallout 1 even though this style of play is going to seriously take some getting used to.

I'm not arguing whether or not you'd be able to do it. Of course you would. You seem to be suggesting that it's okay to basically pirate the game because it's easy to get away with. This is why some companies fight back with stupid, misguided DRM schemes. Because people don't seem to have a problem making and distributing copies when there isn't any.

But, again, might as well wait until the site is up and running and the terms of the backup copy are clearly spelled out.

I'm trying to play it via PlayOnMac, but the mouse is incredibly laggy that the game is almost unplayable.

I saw someone else with that issue who was using Wineskin instead of PlayOnMac so it could be something to do with Wine and OS X, or at least whatever version you're on. People using Linux distros don't seem to be having problems. I think he mentioned using a Logitech mouse, so it could be a driver issue as well if that's what you have. You could also try using another pre-built binary from here, but I don't know if any of them use anything different in regards to input that would make a difference, especially if two of the popular ones both have an issue.
