Family Guy is Back!
Family Guy returns May 1st on Fox at 9:00. So is anyone going to watch it this time?
Maybe. The joke to good joke ratio is too low to justify watching the originals anymore and while I see no reason that will change, I'll give it a chance or two.

What are the odds of it being noticeably worse than before?

Also, what are the odds of people still saying it's just as good as before?

Here's hoping it really is just like it was.

EDIT:

This is how I always felt about Family Guy. I'd sit in silence for 15 minutes, laugh my ass off for 2 minutes or so, then silence again for the rest of the show.

Futurama, on the otherhand, was a constant stream of smiles and chuckles (which I preffered).

Family Guy had hilarious funny moments, but it also dragged on far too frequently.

Oh course I will watch Family Guy! I've watched from the first season that orginally aired on Fox. If Fox cancels it this time at least I have Cartoon Network to fall back on :)

I feel the same way. Though FG is one of my favorite shows of all time I feel it does have the tendency to drag. Also, one thing too is that half the time people don't even get the jokes but just laugh at them cause they know they should. Like, the soviet russia Yakov Smirnoff joke. No one I know even knows who he is, they just laugh at the joke cause they think they should. I think many people find humor in the jokes because they don't understand them. If they did, they wouldnt seem quite as funny.

I started watching it last summer on Cartoon Network and it has become one of my favorite shows. I'm definetly looking forward to new episodes.

Ah come on people, Family Guy is one of the funniest shows out their. You need to watch this season to keep it on the air. Fox has 35 episodes in production and is only going to show 13 for the fourth season. If it does well they will show the rest as the fifth season. Then season six will start production if those ratings are good and so on. If not, Family Guy will be cancelled again.

I much prefer Family Guy to any other cartoon out there; it easily trumps Simpsons and Futurama, both of which hardly ever get a smile out of me.

Even if it gets cancelled and noone watches it, they'll release what did/didn't air on DVD, and whomever was interested in it will have access to it.

"Funniest shows out there" is completely subjective, you know.

I remember reading a critique about Family Guy that said the show won't age well because it's based off pop culture jokes. I think that's dead on - who's going to remember Yakov Smirnoff or the Kool AId Man in ten, twenty years?

I also think that Jrunt20x is right. The show has gotten to the point where people watch it because it's popular. That doesn't indicate quality at all.

I'd be lying if I said that the show has never made me laugh, but it just doesn't compare to Futurama or The Simpsons. The quality just isn't there.

Somebody really needs to explain to me how Futurama is funny. I mean, I gave it a chance. I've bought their DVD's. I watch(ed) it on Fox, Adult Swim, and TBS. I just don't see the appeal. It was made (about) the same the Simpsons began sucking, and it shows. Both are very similar. I don't want to get a flame war started (we've had plenty before now...) but I just can't like that show.

I love Family Guy, and I hope that it stays good. However, the recent commercials have me a little worried, as the stuff they've shown hasn't been very good. The same goes for American Dad. That show hasn't looked good at all thus far...

If there's nothing else on and I happen to be watching TV at that time I might watch it but I'm certainly not going to plan my evening around it.

Futurama sucks compared to Family Guy. The only time I laughed at Futurama is when the two penguins picked up the guns. Family Guy makes me laugh every episode.:booty:

While I do really like the show, I tend to like the shows that have stories. Futurama, King of the Hill (shut up!), Venture Brothers rely off your knowledge of events that have happened in previous episodes to really bring the point home. Remember how the first showing of VB was kind of confusing since it was out of order, and certain episodes seemed to expect you to know who certain characters were when you had no clue. I enjoy the random comedy shows like Futurama and Simpsons, but I enjoy the others just a little bit more. I'll be watching the show when it returns, and hopefully it continues without a hitch.

If you say the exact opposite then I totally agree. Something like this... Family Guy sucks compared to Futurama. The only time I laughed at Family Guy is never. Futurama makes me laugh every episode.

there humor requires some overall cultural knowledge, i research on jokes from that show i dont get, and then after i know, i laugh my ass off for the whole 30 mins, commercials included

Well you're entitled to your opinion even if it is kinda rediculous. Besides animation Futurama and the Simpsons are pretty different. Hell Family Guy is more like the Simpsons than Futurama ever was IMHO.

You're kidding. Futurama makes its jokes based on cliches, thus never risking going too far with their comedy. Family Guy has always taken things a baby step further and then brings it back so that the jokes don't offend anyone too much. I hate to say it but... Futurama's just lame. To me, it's like the Simpsons. It's incredibly contradictial in the fact that it contains content for older people (dead bodies, etc.) but has punch lines that even a pre-schooler could understand and probably not even laugh, and I am in no way being sarcastic. Of course this is just my opinion.

That's kinda odd, if i had to look up something to understand it wouldn't be very funny at all. It'd be like a stand up comedian having to explain his jokes to me...

It's just occured to me what the biggest difference between the two series was.

Futurama had no qualms with emotion. Some of the episodes were deeply touching - the ones about Fry's brother and his dog in particular - and I've heard people say that the show has brought them to tears.

I've NEVER heard anything close to that said about Family Guy.

The two series have completely different senses of humor. This is getting to the point where it's like comparing apples and bar stools.

Excellent point, they aren't very similar and it's easy to enjoy both, and in the end I think emotion and story content is a reason why one the shows won an emmy for Outstanding Animated Program and the other did not...

I see more similarities between Futurama and The Simpsons than FG and The Simpsons. I mean, Futurama was made by the same people. Many of the characters say the same type of comments. For example, the Professor has the exact same type of comments as Abe Simpson. That's just one of my qualms.

And hey, the majority of people must like FG more than Futurama anyway...Futurama is still cancelled! :booty:

Fry and his brother (7 leaf clover)

Hehe. Yeah. The typical Fox audience liking something is clearly a mark of quality! Viva Family Guy! Viva Fart Date!

That would be because they're owned by the same company.

Fox and its overall quality as a channel has nothing to do with this.

thats why family guy dvds and futurama dvds come in those cool individual cases, i love them they are so sick

Your point was that because Family Guy is more popular, it's better. That argument is dumb, as has been covered numerous times on this site, among others. Anyway, I was just kidding. Family Guy isn't as good as Fart Date.

Well hopefully they won't do what they always do with good shows...move it to crappy time slot and kill the show.

If you wanna look at similar chacters that's fine...

Lisa hates her family - Meg hates her family
Bart is stupid and overweight -Chris is stupid and overweight
Marge is an intelligent attractive woman married to an unattractive oaf - Lois is an attractive intelligent woman married to an unattractive oaf
Homer is fat, idiotic, works at a factory, and is a poor father - Peter is fat, idiotic, works at a factory, and is a poor father
Both families have babies that are more intelligent than most people in their families

I could go on but you should be beginning to see some some simliar characteristics and personality traits. Seth MacFarlane basically took the same family, gave some of them more fat, hair and glasses, inserted more edgy pop culture references, made the dog and baby talk intelligently, and put Bart's troublemaking ability into Stewie. The only ones making really different comments from most Simpsons characters are Brian and Stewie. It's not unique or even all that original and if I compare the Futurama characters there's some simlarities but they are also very unique. Who do you accuratly compare Kif to? Zapp Brannigan? Hermes? you can stretch it but it's a reach to see a double...

As for people liking it, one of the three shows has only one nomination and no wins for the highest award an animated program can recieve. Futurama has comparable and ratings to Family Guy on AS and had it's fair share of DVD sales. The show has a fan base big enough to come back but is it worth it to the creators to try? Doing two animated series is very hard (as Seth MacFarlane will soon find) and shows often get shuffled around (especially on FOX). Groening and other Futurama crew expressed dislike for Futurama getting messed with and kicked around the schedule for things like sports (MacFarlane said simlar things but went back to FOX anyhow) so they probably don't see too much worth into putting so much effort into it only to see the same things happen again. Granted some of that is being hypthetical, but then again so is the idea that Family will be successful when it returns.

Those are some of my favorite eposide. Another good one is the one time skips forward.

also i think the animation quality for Futuram is much better than the Simpsons and Family Guy. It is like they are actually making the drawing look good,

I think the reason Futurama won't be back and American Dad will get axed, is that Fox just won't let creators of popular series have more than the original. Chris Carter got 3 series of his canned while X-Files was on and Groening got royally screwed with Futurama (the constant pre-emptions and bad timeslot.) Seth should have gone with another network for American Dad, because I don't think it's got much of a chance with Fox.

No, I am not kidding. Family Guy is just a bunch of politically incorrect pop-culture references strung together and animated for nothing more than shock value. There's rarely an episode that has 5 total minutes of creativity. They appeal to the lowest common denominator and people eat it up. Futurama has comedy on all levels and jokes and subtleties that might pass you by upon first viewing. If you are only seeing "punchlines that even a pre-schooler could understand" I really can't help you - you just don't get it I guess... to each his own...

Yeah, if that's all you see you must have the intelect of a pre-schooler because all the good stuff is going right over your head.

Yep. :booty:

I enjoy Family Guy and all of its cheap laughs, I also enjoy the Simson's and see no reason to declare one better than the other. As for Futurama and King of the Hill, every time I watch those shows I can't find the humor. They never get so much as a smile from me.

Well let's just face it. Family Guy is back and Futurama is gone. I have to admit that I did watch Futurama when it first started on Fox. Why? Because I'm a huge Simpsons fan. So I said to myself "Hmmmmmm if Matt created Simpsons(One of the Greatest Show of All Time) then Futurama must be funny!'' I was sad to say I didn't like it. The jokes were lame and so were the characters (except Bender and Fry). So here this FAMILY GUY IS WAY MORE FUNNY!:booty:

I am anxiously awaiting the new season, loved the first 3 (and yeas I get alot of the jokes and therefore laugh my ass off during most of the episodes)

Hope the quality is still there after not having any new episodes for so many years...

I'm entirely sick of the old Family Guy episodes, but I will watch the new season b/c the jokes will (hopefully) be funny (the first time anyways).

Oh and Futurama is easily tied with the Simpsons as one of my favorite animated series (the others being The Critic and Sealab 2021), and I would be willing to never watch a single episode of Family Guy ever again, for even one more episode of Futurama.

Obviously (points to avatar) I prefer Futurama to Family Guy, but no one has ever gone broke appealing to the lowest common denominator so Family Guy could succeed despite its almost total lack of creativity.

To the Family Guy fans: Yes, I would like fries with that, thanks.
