The irony is too good, the implications are frightening...

A second peanut processing plant owned by the company at the heart of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella illness has been shut down after the bacteria were discovered in peanut products there.
Peanut Corporation of America shuttered its Plainview, Texas plant last night at the request of state health officials, said Doug McBride, a spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.
...
Federal officials said they were not aware that Peanut Corporation of America was operating a peanut processing plant in Texas until after they began investigating the Georgia facility in early January.
...
"I forget if we heard about it from the FDA or news reports, but we put two and two together and saw there was a plant in Plainview," McBride said.

yeah FDA isn't doing what they should.

It's like a WE (Woman's Entertainment) or Lifetime crappy docu-drama of China's issues... leading role... USA.

Ah the irony of overlooking an entire food processing plant in Plainview.

As much as the FDA messed up, I think it's time for that Peanut company to face whatever criminal and civil liabilities it has coming. This is like the worst time to have such a widespread recall of food products and not only did the company endanger (and end) lives, it fucked up a bunch of other companies' bottom lines as well.

The Peanut Co is going down in a major way. But beyond that who knows. Certainly no Kelloggs executive is going to get a paycut because of this.

Unfortunately there is no way to make it up to the 8 people who died, and untold others whose health is permenantly affected. Without a revamp of govt regulation, big food corporations will step up safety for a while and then go back to contracting out to cheap corner-cutting warehouses that they can use to take the fall when this happens again.
Sadly "overhaul" of any government agency in this administration will mean two things:

1) Bigger
2) More expensive
Of all the government agencies out there, the FDA has been one of the most problematic. Of course its gonna be expensive. Their mistakes have been expensive (in human life as well as money).
The asshole company owner urged his employees to ship the tainted product.

I wonder if he could be charged with manslaughter, or perhaps reckless endangerment. It's certainly possible that some of the deaths were a result of this guy's decision. The warehouse sounds like a real sweatshop, part-time minimum wage, awful work conditions, disregard for employee or consumer safety.

You know what's hilarious? I eat about 6lbs of peanut butter a week, even in the light of these recent peanut issues.

Let's stop badmouthing peanut butter, GOD DAMN IT!

I should make you a macro so you don't have to go through the trouble of posting. I'll even make a GUI for it with two big buttons:

#1 Raawwrr gubmint bad!
#2 Raawwrr taxes unfair!

Think of the synergies and efficiencies to be gained.

Fair enough. Maybe we should make you one while at it? We'll make it a fun multiple choice javascript just for your account, since you love my bullet points so much:

Selection 1 - "Another post from ____. Thanks for wasting our time.
Selection 2 - "Another thread from _____. Thanks for wasting our time.
Selection 3 - "____ your posts are so pathetic, and since I have nothing intelligent to say, I'll just go ahead and keep pointing that out as arrogantly as I possibly can."

Maybe we can just randomize them to give the illusion that your posts change up sometimes?

Seriously, your post/thread/user trolling and flaming versus substantive post ratio is sinking down there with msut77.

I'll say it again -if you consistently have so many problems with a particular posters posts and threads, it's time to put them on ignore and save everyone from having to endure your trolling.

If I offended, I apologize. I didn't think you and I had to mince words and I was just giving you shit.

Here we have the FDA. Probably the worst run, worst "results" oriented government agency, and it's in charge of FOOD AND DRUGS. Both of which would cause Americans to absolutely lose their collective shit if they knew how bad they were really run. What they need more than *anything* is a thousand new boots on the ground. They need enforcement and a whole shitload of it. That costs money. No two ways about that.

fucking peanuts are killing people dude. Spinach before that. Jalapenos ("only" 1 death), and what was before that? Not to mention that whole pharma side of the house.

This is why you should buy locally produced peanut butter.

Not only is it better for you, but after you get out of the hospital, you can drive over there and kick some ass.

This is evidence that we should privatize the FDA into a for-profit industry. Because that guarantees:
1) Running the FDA will be cheaper
2) PCA would have been caught and notified faster.

Right? RIGHT???

Oh come on. The FDA is more akin to the police (and more incompetent, if you can believe it).

Which only means a private business could do a better job. Isn't that how the pro-privatization argument works?

As a matter of fact, I can see into the future and I foresee a bunch of food industry executives being out of work (though not, of course, charged with 9+ counts of manslaughter despite willfully sending out contaminated product). Maybe *they* can run the new private FDA?

Wouldn't that just mean they'd be more willing to make allowances based on how willing they are to pay "inspector fees"?

They should hook up with the credit ratings agencies to create a super-duper for-profit regulating body. AAA rated salmonella junk bonds for everyone!

I am as much for shrinking the size of government as anyone (note I'm not holding my breath), but what I meant to convey was I feel privatizing an agency like the FDA, at least the law enforcement aspects of it, would be the same to me as privatizing the police. We all saw how that worked out in RoboCop ;)
