The irony is too good, the implications are frightening...

A second peanut processing plant owned by the company at the heart of a nationwide outbreak of salmonella illness has been shut down after the bacteria were discovered in peanut products there.
Peanut Corporation of America shuttered its Plainview, Texas plant last night at the request of state health officials, said Doug McBride, a spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Federal officials said they were not aware that Peanut Corporation of America was operating a peanut processing plant in Texas until after they began investigating the Georgia facility in early January.

Ah the irony of overlooking an entire food processing plant in Plainview.

As much as the FDA messed up, I think it's time for that Peanut company to face whatever criminal and civil liabilities it has coming. This is like the worst time to have such a widespread recall of food products and not only did the company endanger (and end) lives, it fucked up a bunch of other companies' bottom lines as well.

The Peanut Co is going down in a major way. But beyond that who knows. Certainly no Kelloggs executive is going to get a paycut because of this.

Unfortunately there is no way to make it up to the 8 people who died, and untold others whose health is permenantly affected. Without a revamp of govt regulation, big food corporations will step up safety for a while and then go back to contracting out to cheap corner-cutting warehouses that they can use to take the fall when this happens again.

Of all the government agencies out there, the FDA has been one of the most problematic. Of course its gonna be expensive. Their mistakes have been expensive (in human life as well as money).

I wonder if he could be charged with manslaughter, or perhaps reckless endangerment. It's certainly possible that some of the deaths were a result of this guy's decision. The warehouse sounds like a real sweatshop, part-time minimum wage, awful work conditions, disregard for employee or consumer safety.
 
You know what's hilarious? I eat about 6lbs of peanut butter a week, even in the light of these recent peanut issues.

Let's stop badmouthing peanut butter, GOD DAMN IT!

Here we have the FDA. Probably the worst run, worst "results" oriented government agency, and it's in charge of FOOD AND DRUGS. Both of which would cause Americans to absolutely lose their collective shit if they knew how bad they were really run. What they need more than *anything* is a thousand new boots on the ground. They need enforcement and a whole shitload of it. That costs money. No two ways about that.

fucking peanuts are killing people dude. Spinach before that. Jalapenos ("only" 1 death), and what was before that? Not to mention that whole pharma side of the house.

This is evidence that we should privatize the FDA into a for-profit industry. Because that guarantees:
1) Running the FDA will be cheaper
2) PCA would have been caught and notified faster.

Wouldn't that just mean they'd be more willing to make allowances based on how willing they are to pay "inspector fees"?

They should hook up with the credit ratings agencies to create a super-duper for-profit regulating body. AAA rated salmonella junk bonds for everyone!

I am as much for shrinking the size of government as anyone (note I'm not holding my breath), but what I meant to convey was I feel privatizing an agency like the FDA, at least the law enforcement aspects of it, would be the same to me as privatizing the police. We all saw how that worked out in RoboCop ;)
