FF Chocobo Dungeon-Why aren't people buying??

I don't usually mind a little dirt since I always wipe off the cases and games anyway. But for some reason, EB cases are often physically damaged. I'm not sure how it happens. The case will have gouges in it or little tears. It's like someone gets their jollies stabbing the plastic with a pen or something.

Well, it turns out according to the guys at the Gamestop I went to to swap my case/insert that it showing in stock there is an error and they sold it long ago but have an inventory problem. Nice...

Anyway, I started it up tonight and it was fairly decent for the hour that I played it. As with most RPGs it starts a little slow but I figure it will get going a bit more soon. I went through one dungeon (after the tutorial one) and it was extremely easy. I can only assume it gets a bit tougher. But as I expected my son loves the characters. And fortunately most of it is voiced so I don't have to read him everything (which was very tiring even in a game like Super Paper Mario). The graphics are decent enough, though I am a bit more used to HD now after playing the 360 so much so it seems a bit soft and fuzzy in comparison - though some of that is simply the art style. The far away shots of the town look nice but are ruined by jaggies on all the buildings. Closeups and interiors are much better though. Of course the dungeons are fairly plain as they aren't supposed to have scenery - but they get the job done. We'll probably put an hour in it every night till we finish it. Does anyone know about how long it is?

It appears I may be the only CAG playing this, but now that I'm a bit further in I am enjoying it quite a bit. The first few dungeons are dirt easy, but then it ramps up a bit. I've found a few of the special condition dungeons as well as what appears to be one leading to a major boss fight. The special condition dungeons really mix up the gameplay and make you use different strategies. I've found one that won't let you take any items in and sets you at level 1 - that one wasn't too hard. But I haven't been able to get through the other 2. One sets your health at 1 (along with all the enemies). This means you need to be careful and always get the first strike in. But I kept failing it because invariably my Chocobo would miss one time and then get hit by the monster (one hit = dead). I think I need to advance my jobs a bit more so that I have some more ranged attacks to take away the chance for missing. Still, it will be difficult because you have a limited number of SP to do such attacks. The third dungeon consisted of a huge string of enemies and did not allow me to bring in any items either. I was not a high enough level for that one.

On the boss dungeon I got through a door after floor 10 and then was around floor 17 or so when I stumbled into a "Monster House" which was swarming with creatures. It was also filled with loot! I backed into a corridor and took them all on and was down to the very last one but I only had 8 HP and no healing items left so I had to use a teleport item to get out (die and you lose all the stuff you picked up). Unfortunately I didn't get to pick up all the loot - it was all just out of reach on the other side of the monster .

But in any case, the game is getting more fun and throwing a moderate amount of challenge at me. I haven't really played any Rogue-likes except for, well, the original Rogue (and Hack) ;). So I really can't compare this to other more modern examples of the genre - but as someone who enjoys both traditional turn-based and strategy RPGs I would highly recommend it. It is sort of a hybrid of the two. The nice thing vs a traditional game is that the combat is very rapid as it occurs on the dungeon map - there's no lengthy battle startup and ending phase as in so many traditional turn-based RPGs.

You're not the only one. I've been playing it since it came out, and I'm up to the third "hard" dungeon (the dungeon of light). At first I thought the White Mage job was fairly useless, but once you level it up and get Dia, Slow, and Cura, it's quite nice. The water dungeon gave me problems (especially those flying dragons that breathe fire and cast Slow), but I was rolling through the light dungeon until I got to the mini-boss on level 30.

If you thought the "1 HP" special dungeon was bad, wait until you get to the "1 HP and Blind" dungeon. Controller-throwing fun.
