Fighter Thread XXXVI - Oh go home, poopie pants!

I have Fire Pro Returns. It's awesome. I don't know how many new fans it will bring to the table, but at least it's out here, in English, and $15. You know the theory about gameplay over graphics? Well this is the true test of that theory. Personally, I love the 2d sprites. They just need more animation. I was hooked on Fire Pro D for a while years ago. I had a guide from Fire Pro Club help me get through the labyrinth of Japanese menus. It's nice to be able to play the game without looking at a printout the whole time. The fast pace makes it feel more like a fighter than any 3D wrestler, especially the last few.

If you are deciding about KOF XI JPN vs. US, it's basically a battle of 480p vs. English and supporting SNKP US. I've played both, and they are, to me, the same. Why did they take out 480p? That makes no sense. At least now I can play it on my PS3. And supposedly, NGBC on a PS3 has dramatically reduced load times; down to 6 seconds instead of the 20 or so I remember. I should fire it up just to time it.

Oh wait, does KOF XI on the PS3 look the same as 480p KOF on the PS2? I kinda forgot the PS3 can upscale. If it looks the same or better... yeah, I'll grab dat Yankee edition.

PS3 480p upscaled doesn't look as good as native 480p. From what I've seen, it looks like 480i being displayed at 480p. If your TV sucks at 480i, it's an improvement. It looked decent on my LG LCD monitor I used at a friends house over the weekend. I haven't tried it on my TV. I'll do that now.

Yeah, basically like I said. It's good if your TV can't do decent 480i. Some things look good, like the actual 2D sprites, but it has some flicker still.

I can do a pretty badass combo with Ducky, it's like a 42 hit combo. I've only pulled it off once in a real match but damn it felt good.

So I just played some KOF '98, '02, and XI, and I remembered that I never bothered to pick up Neowave. Is it even worth it? I haven't heard too many good things about this game.

I know a couple people that like Neowave, but I am not one of them.

An arcade near my girlfriend's place has it. The only reason I ever plop a token into it is because it's the last KOF game to have Leona in it. Other than that KOFXI trounces Neowave in every aspect.

With KOF 96', 98' and XI, I'm pretty much set for life.

I know a lot of people swear by 2002, but I found it really boring. The backgrounds sucked, the music sucked... the gameplay was pretty good, but I overwhelmingly prefer 98 over it. Speaking of which, where's dat remake?

No doubt about that. '98 is still my all time fave. And where is that remake?

Unless you want to collect everything that is KOF don't bother with Neowave. If you have 98' or 2K2 you're set with KOF goodness. Neowave is like KOF 2K2's ugly sister. I think it was an excuse for SNK/P to mess around with the Atmoswave board.

I remember some guy in Japan trashed my ass with Younger Geese in Neowave. Musta been easy since he's broken as hell. That game sucks

I like Rasputin beer.

More alcohol content than a can of Steel Reserve, and tastes like a tree. Never Say Die, indeed.

Holy crap that's some pricy beer.

The first game I ever played while intoxicated was Street Fighter Alpha 2 on my Saturn. It was tough but not as bad as drunk Super Mario Bros.

My lady dumped me...
WHICH MEANS that our romantic getaway planned for this weekend won't be happening...
WHICH MEANS that I'll be attending NEC in Philly. Nothing like some high-level fighting game nerdery to take the edge off. So, who's going? Last year was a blast! Jim, that's up in your hood right?

No SNK fighters? Also I'm surprised to see Killer Insticnt so high. Tekken Tag > Tekken 3. Besides that I'd say it was a solid list. Thanks for the vid Rolento.

Okay, I got KoF XI in the mail the other day. Havent had a chance to get to it yet, cos Ive been busy with Firepro and CoD among other things.

Anyway, In order to 'prepare' for KoF XI, I decided to bust out and play some older KoF games. I hear alot of people mention KoF 98' as one of the best games, but I dont think I have that one. Heres what I got:

KoF 99' for PS1
KoF 00/01 - PS2
KoF 02/03 - PS2

I thought that was all the KoF there was for Sony Systems without importing. Am I missing any other US releases?

Im sure theres a few Dreamcast games I dont have, but ideally I'd like to have everything playable on PS2, as thats where I invested my arcade stick money.

*edit* another question. On the back of the box of KoF 02/03, it calls 03 the 8th game in the series. Yet the next one released in the US is XI. What happened to the 9th and 10th games? Do they count the 3D games as part of the series numbering? SNK is soo damn confusing! lol

KoF '95 got a US release for PS1 but at this point that game runs on nostalgia alone.

EDIT - Even counting just the yearly releases (94-03), KoF '03 is the tenth game. I have no idea where they pulled an 8 from.

Yeah, the early KOFs really aren't very good... at all, but I suppose the same could be said of almost any early Neo Geo fighter that SNK produced.

What are the dates? I'll be home from school the 13th.

7.99 is pricey? Damn, I'm living in the wrong state. I'm not trying to sass ora nything, that's a legitimate question.

How early are we talking about? I actually enjoy playing 94' now and then. I also love 96', which I played a lot of early in high school.

Then again I guess I'm biased because 96' was the first time Leona was in a KOF game. She wasn't nerfed in that game either like she was in many KOF's after that.

Also I agree with Jim, $7.99 isn't too pricey for beer. I thought that was normal pricing for beer that doesn't taste like horse piss.

OT, but $7.99 is average for a six pack in my area. Also, that pic of Raspy on the beer package looks like some Monty Python collage what with his hand doing some weird gesture in the air and all...

I wanna say anything before 97 wasn't very good. Though 96 did make some progress. I hated 94 though.

I'm also in agreement about prices. I'd much rather have quality over quantity - that goes for anything, really. There's too much stuff that tastes like horse piss or dog piss or even cat piss, so it's not too difficult to justify spending $8+ for something decent.

Well it's $7.99 for a 4-Pack. It's a little pricey but if it's a good beer then I don't mind. I just spent $23 on a 24 pack of Sam Adams Winter Variety pack. Good stuff. But I gotta wait about an hour before it gets cold

I played the hell out of KOF 95' on my PS1 back in the day. I like the Pshyco Soilder ending credits with the team playing a J-Pop song. But I agree with asian, KOF 96' was awsome. But I'm biased too cause Geese & Krauser on the same team = fucking awsome. I never really cared for 97' much, probably my least favorite of the series. When it came out it was good, but in retro-spec I wouldn't go back and play it.

I agree with 97 being the worst KoF.... it's just really unspectacular. 23 for a case of Sam Adams is cheap as hell to me, that's $34-35 dollars around me. I knew my state sucked for liquor with its archaic laws, but I guess it sucks for beer to :(

Also, it's about 8 bucks for a 6-pack of Bud around here. Anything decent is 9.75 to 10.50

I never said that KOF 97 was anything great... it just seemed to play a little more smoothly than earlier KOF games did, but it mighta just been me. Either way, I didn't feel motivated to put much time into any KOF before 98.

What makes KOF 97' so unapealing now is there's no reason to play it. KOF 98' has every character that was in 97' (except Orichi, Blood Riot Iori & Blood Riot Leona) plus more moves & DMs. At least 96' had Krauser, Geese, Mr. Big & Goenitz.

Also what made 96' good at the time is that it's the first KOF to re-draw all the sprites. Kyo's animation in 95' was kinda goofy.

I remember picking up KOF '95 for PS1, my first one. Played the hell out of it. '96 looked sweet, but I never had a chance to play it until much later. I have '97 for Saturn, paid $40 for it. That was after the Saturn was left for dead in the U.S., and I started buying imports for it. X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Vampire Savior, Metal Slug, Real Bout Collection, alll great. I do kick myself on not having money to buy Radiant Silvergun for $40 when I had the chance. "It will be there next week." Wrong.

At least Dreamcast came out and had a bunch of 2D fighter goodness on it.

I picked up my KOF 97' in Japan for a $1. Complete with spine card and everything. But I do remember there was a boom about 10 years ago for these import Saturn games. Around the time EB was carrying these and selling them for something crazy like $60 - $70.

I also wish I would've picked up Radiant Silvergun. I remember seeing it and just passing it up for Fire Pro Wrestling, Metal Slug & Real Bout Collection. Who knew that would be the most expensive of the bunch.

I remember picking up Radiant Silvergun for 3 dollars 8)

Also SOTN Saturn version for 3 dollars (although that was disc only, where Radiant Silvergun was complete with spine card)

Oh shit, it's going to suck playing against King!

And RS complete w/spine for $3?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? That's almost like finding a buffalo nickel for shmup nuts. Or something.

Anywayz, gottdamn, gratz on that score.

Has anyone ordered from HimeyaShop.com before?

I was thinking of ordering Akatsuki Blitzkampf when I get my new computer this week. Just wondering if they were reliable and such.

if you do get it, please post impressions since I have yet to download the demo.

HimeyaShop.com is reliable but they are a bit on the expensive side especially shipping.

asian, when you get the game, we should have some netplay matches.

I ordered Melty Blood ReAct from them a while back. iirc, shipping was $17, but the service was good.

Himeyashop is definitely reliable. I use them for all the hentai games I allegedly don't have. Only downside is the shipping that's soooooo expensive. Sometimes you just wanna buy a $10 game and you end up paying $30 when shipping's factored in.

But if you do get Akatsuki Blitzkampf Nazi DeathMarch, let me know how it is coz I'm kinda interested.

Just played a bit of KoFXI. Good to know SNK hasnt given up onthe impossibel to beat, hard as fucking shit bosses.

The fucking cunt with the rope dart and 20 foot pole and I beat most times, but the douchebag that comes after? The fuck that just flashes pink and you die? WTF? I was only able to beat him once, and that was after I did the following.

- Lost to him once and select lowered boss health
- Footsweep McCheap him to death

I swear the bosses in KoF games are the worst. Here you are thinking your all doing good learning combos and special attacks, and here they come to cheap your ass to death. This new pink douche is almost as bad as the cunt from KoF 2001, the one with the giant black lion who just swooshed his fucking coat around and killed you in 3 hits.

:bomb:

SNK bosses can be total fucking assholes. One good example of how they should do bosses is Mark of the Wolves. Not crazy, massive damage inducing nightmares, but bosses that you can beat without having to be cheap. For the record, I hate Rugal. Motherfucker will spam out those genocide cutters whenever he wants to. You don't even have to jump. They aren't alone, since it seems that every 3D fighting game as of late has to 1up the previous ones with cheap bosses. Alpha 152, Abyss, and Jinpachi are all bastards if given the chance to be. My order would be Alpha 152 > Jinpachi > Abyss as far as cheapness goes. And Gill? fuck that asshole. He likes his axe kicks that move him just out of reach and smashes his heel on your face. And his pyro and cryo kinesis plus his rising head butt or whatever it is that he likes to do twice when you try to jump in. And then he has his resurrection that fills his life bar up and pushes you away so you have to be right on top of him and time your attack right to snuff him out of it. [/rant]

Those cheap ass bosses are only fun if you use them against the cpu.

I just hate when the only way they can make the bosses challenging is by breaking the rules of the game. They dont have to charge charge moves, infinite, always full super meters, etc.

This newest nightmare in KoF XI, Magaki or whatever. He spams pink fireballs all over the screen so you cant advance on him, and one of the damn balls comes out from behind you. Since you cant turn around its effectively unblockable. Sure you could possibly jump back over and behind it, but then your even further away from the boss.

The only way I can get close to him is to use Vanessas ground sliding punch attack. I can start cheesing him with that, and it works about 1/10 times, after the requisite first loss to lower his health of course. But most times after awhile he will just flex and hit his mega pink fuckcloud attack, which fills the screen, hits you wherever you are, and is apparently, unblockable.

I paid for the game, your not trying to coax another quarter out of my pocket, why do you have to be so soulcrushingly cheap? It doesnt make the game 'challenging', it makes me not want to play it.

When I get to him, it's usually L1+L2+R1+R2+Select+Start time.

I'm waiting for some games to come in, it's taking forever to ship :/

King of Fighters XI and Fire Pro Wrestling Returns!

Gonna dust off the PS2 this weekend, hopefully!

Those 2 plus Neogeo Battle Coliseum were my triple threat Amazon order. Too bad NGBC was delayed until December 11th.

Fired up my Dreamcast today for some Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 and Project Justice.
