Fighting games: worth getting into by yourself?

I picked up the Tekken 5 Ultimate bundle (Tekken 5+an arcade stick) yesterday with Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, and I absolutely love both games. It really enhances the arcade feel to have a nice, solid arcade stick too.

Here's my problem: No one in my viscinity would ever dedicate themselves to playing fighting games. My friends only like Madden and Halo. I've tried to get them to play games like Guilty Gear, Zelda, or Wario Ware, but they refuse to even touch anything outside their comfort zone. I'd literally have to pay them to play SFIII:3S.

I saw on the Shoryuken forums that some people are in my area, but anyone remotely close to me is 2+ hours away, and there are zero arcades around. I've done searches for certain machines, but places around here don't even have Galaga machines anymore.

So, what would you guys say? Is it worth it to get into fighting games by yourself? I'm going to a fairly large college next year, and I'm hoping that I'd have some competition. I just don't know if I can justify spending the big bucks for import games that only I'll be playing.

So is it even worth it to get into fighting games by yourself? Or do you really need a few friends to play to make it enjoyable?

There's already a fighting thread somewhere on this board.

But to tell you honestly, I don't think fighting games would be worth getting into if you don't have anyone to play with. I play with my brother occasionally, and sometimes I can drag a friend over, but is never much fun since they both suck. Playing the AI isn't much fun either, as they either get too predictable or you automatically figure out their weaknesses and subconciously exploit it.

Maybe pick up a Guilty Gear game or Fatal Fury. But I wouldn't bother importing games. You'll spend $60+ and probably will play them for a short period of time.

I think its worth it. The majority of my close friends are not into gaming and I play most fighting games alone. I cant wait to pick up VF5.

I really like fighters but unfortunately I've been staying away since Soul Caliber due to lack of people to play with. Hopefully they will work out online and lag issues with these games because until them I just don't think it's worth it to get good at any of these games...

For the most part, I don't have anyone to play with either... nobody understands me when I say "Hey! Let's play Melty Blood: Act Cadenza." Ideally, there'd be people at my school who know how to jump in Street Fighter let alone throw a fireball, but my hopes of finding people who will understand a conversation that goes something like "HEY MILLIONAIRE FIGHT 2001! KONO BAKKERO!!" will probably be unrealized.

Err... point is, I still play a hell of a lot of fighting games despite not having anyone to play with and I still think it's worth it simply because it's a hell of a lot of fun. And you'd be surprised by how fun survival modes in games like Guilty Gear XX can be.

as far as classic fighters i love played yie ar kungfu and all the streets of rage games by myself especially streets of rage due to the great soundtracks in the games.

when it comes to more recents fighters i really loved playing mace the dark age for the n64 ( highly underrated fighter) .

but when it comes to recnet fighters i like the quest modes in the soul calibur games and i love playing tekken 5 by myself on the hardest difficulty setting.

oh yeah and alot fo the great 2d fighters on the neo geo systems are fun to play alone esppecially the last blade series, kof games , samurai showdowns and some of the rare known fighters they came out with. i used to have alot of them on my pc but my harddrive died and i havent had the heart to redownload them all again for hopes of being able to retreive them again from my old harddrive.........oh yeah and the marvel vs series of games are fun to play alone too.

and of course you cant forget the powerstone series for mindless 3d fighting fun.

I have always suffered from the problem where I am too good for my own good. People get tired of losing to me! At this point, I only enjoy the Tekken series (recently been playing Tekken 2) and the occasional Killer Instinct, when I have a chance. I have played a ton of solitaire Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter Alpha, and Samurai Shodown.

I believe so.

I have a bunch of friends who play fighting games (2-D and 3-D), but I find myself playing fighting games alone most of the time. The reason being is that our schedules don't always mesh, so we end up up practicing on our own.

I really like going through single player mode with different characters to get better with how they play. Or even if you have a favorite character, slowly getting better and better with them is a nice feeling.

The only game I think I play with other people nowadays is DOA 4 online.

Well, I guess my other option is to buy an Xbox, buy Xbox Live, and start playing one of the 2D fighters that are online:

Capcom vs. SNK 2
Street Fighter Anniversary Collection
Guilty Gear (forgot which one)
And I think there's one more.

Unfortunately, everyone says they lag quite a bit almost one out of four matches. I just don't know if I can justify spending $100+ on that. I'd have to buy an Xbox, Xbox Live, a controller converter (for my arcade stick), an ethernet cord or a wireless thing, and then the games. That might actually go WAY over $100, probably near $200.

I guess I'll pray my friends like fighting games in college. Anyone ever have luck converting a friend to be a fighting game fanatic?

The OP answered his own question:

"Is it worth it to get into fighting games by yourself? I'm going to a fairly large college next year, and I'm hoping that I'd have some competition. "

If your going to a large college theres bound to be people there to play with. Dont most colleges still have arcades in the rec center, or student union building or whatever they call it? Every college Ive ever went to, or even visited had an Arcade, and in that arcade were fighting games. Granted its been a while since I was in college, but I doubt that much has changed.

God I miss college. =(

I think this has to be one of those intensely personal decisions. Why do you play fighting games? Why do you enjoy them? Can you get the same enjoyment playing solo?

You can't force others to play with you. As you get older, outside of online play, you probably just won't find many people to play with. So, if you can enjoy this, then it's worth it. Honestly, the only reason to play games (outside if you work in the industry) is for enjoyment. You rarely ever "get" anything for being good, outside of enjoyment.

So, is it worth it, I think so. I know I enjoy going through the VF games when they come out, though that's pretty much the only fighter I play (I buy others on the cheap, but I rarely put much time into them).

I seem to go in and out of fighting games. Right now, I'm trying to track down a copy of DOA4 for the 360 and next week my friend will have VF5. But in a month or 2 I'll be back to my usual gaming habits. Then usually in the summer I pick up KoF 98 & XI, Last Blade 2, and Mark of the Wolves since I usually enter those tournaments at Otakon every year.

I have seldom had lag in Capcom vs. SNK 2. It will happen (as with any online game) but not as often as people make it seem. The 2D fighters handle it better than DOAU. I still play Samurai Shodown V online too but the community is small and there are but a few dedictated players that play with some regularity. The ones that do play though are pretty cool people IMO. It's been awhile since I played DOAU but there always seemed to be someone on.

The thing that has always drawn me to fighting games are the characters. Give me some kick ass characters and I'll give it a try. It is hard getting new people interested in fighters because FPS and Sports games are the competive genres of choice. Plus, the learning curve is so high compared to other games.

In college? No. Maybe my school is a bit off, but people either play Madden or Guitar Hero (badly) now.

the only fighting game I play by myself everyday pretty much is street fighter alpha 3 for the gameboy advance.. other than that, MvC, power stone and all the others I share playing time with my lady.

Madden, Guitar Hero, and Halo at my school. It's even gotten to the point where I hear more about Guitar Hero over Madden. My school did have a Tekken 5 machine but now it's a Golden Tee or whatever the popular golf arcade bar game is.

Most quotable thing I have seen in some time!
